November 29, 2024 Issue Twenty Two
MANAGER’S CORNER
Dear TGO Residents,
November 29, 2024
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! The holidays are here, and this weekend kicks off a wonderful time of year at TGO when beautiful lights and decorations are hung. The best part about the holiday season is when our TGO community unites to celebrate our traditions. The TGO Community Church Christmas Cantata will take place on Wed., December 4th at 7pm. Parrish Hospital will host their Gift of Light ceremony, tree-lighting and holiday fireworks on Thurs., December 5th beginning at 5:30pm. The Christmas Golf Cart Parade will roll again on Fri., December 6th beginning around 4:15pm, and Christmas De-Lites on Twin Lakes Drive will take place Monday evening, December 9th beginning at 6pm. Evenings on Twin Lakes and Fairways Drive are so much fun this time of year with all the lights and sounds.
The golf course will re-open in January 2025! The changes you will find on our golf course, especially the tees and greens areas, are just beautiful. Golfers will find new and interesting slopes, shapes and challenges on our putting greens. We’ve also improved the cart paths and bridges for a smoother cart ride through our nature areas along the course. If the weather is cooperating, Shane and Chuck may decide on some “soft opening” golf activities in December prior to our announced January opening. More information about pre-opening activities will be published in the next issue of The Happenings (11/29).
This issue of The Happenings features an interview with Tom Collins our new restaurant manager. Tom joined us a month ago, and he is doing a great job learning about our community’s food and beverage preferences and training a strong Blue Heron team. The best way to support Tom and our restaurant team is to dine often at Blue Heron. He is providing some great weekly specials now, the past beef stew and chicken parmesan specials were very popular. Gift cards for dining at Blue Heron are available now, and they make great gifts for neighbors, friends and family.
There was an unfortunate incident of crime and another unfortunate traffic accident recently. Earlier this month the Nature Center experienced some petty theft. Video surveillance at the Nature Center and our Front Gate allowed us to identify the thieves, the sheriff filed charges and many of the stolen items were recovered. This past weekend a vehicle traveling along the 200 block of Plantation Drive at 3:30a.m. drove off the road and into some trees near an owner’s homesite. This incident is being investigated. We are not immune to the unfortunate things that can happen in communities, but we are very good at “community watch” and we are quick to address and learn from these incidents, so we can prevent them from happening again if possible.
This week we say goodbye to our golf course spray technician Quentin Tabor. Quentin has worked at TGO for almost 10 years and is relocating to Georgia for family reasons. Please see page 28 as we honor Quentin for a decade of hard work to keep our golf course beautiful.
CSA has 70 full-time employees at TGO, and they work very hard, year-round, to keep TGO great. Another holiday tradition is honoring employees by collecting an “Employee Fund” to be distributed to non-management, full time CSA employees after the 1st of the new year. I hope you will choose to donate to the employee fund and honor their hard work in 2024.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Billy Specht CSA Manager

FROM THE EDITOR
December.
Two days from now, it will be December.
I know, you’re all enjoying Thanksgiving leftovers today (and probably the rest of the weekend) and let’s not rush things...
This point in the year used to be a serious challenge to my fortitude (and attitude). Of course, this was back in Connecticut where the approach of December meant at least four months of cold, damp, icy, dark, windy, and challenging days. That wasn’t always a huge problem for me but it became increasingly grim for me as I got older.
I’m sure it had something to do with commuting to work every day (one hour each way!) and the staggering cost of heating oil to just keep the house at 65F. That will take the fun out of December, and winter, in a hurry.
The brief period of lightness at the end of the month was always connecting with family (our children and our extended) and the infectious enthusism that my wife has always had for celebrating Christmas.
The delight of relocating to Florida in this context is that we can still have much of the fun and sweetness—but in t-shirts and bare feet!
This December I’m looking forward to my first experience with some of the special ways The Great Outdoors residents celebrate the season. First, there’s the Golf Cart Parade on Dec 6th and then the Twin Lakes Annual Christmas De-Lites on Dec 9th (see page 48 for info). Expect a few pages of photos in the next issue of The Happenings! Comments, ideas, suggestions, and submissions are always welcome. Please be in touch with me here: email: happenings@tgocsa.com phone: 401-286-9228

GOLF RENOVATION UPDATE - 11/24
On November 14th, we had a great get together with over 100 TGO golf enthusiasts on hand. Everyone was waiting to hear the magical words, “we will open on …” What they heard from course superintendent Shane Willey was “we will be open the first week of January”! However, your entire renovation team will do everything they can to get open sooner than that. That would mean a ‘soft opening’ for the days leading up to January when the Grand Re-Opening festivities would occur. Below will be our last item update on the renovation activities. We are literally watching the grass grow each day.
GREENS
The greens are looking better and better each day. The process has produced a putting surface that is more consistent than the previous greens. It may be prudent to start practicing your
long lag putting as some of the greens are shockingly large!
GRASSING
There are still a few areas that will receive sod. Most of the work is on the course perimeter.
IN-HOUSE PROJECTS
Most of the projects in progress have to do with getting the course ready for opening, from tee markers to hole signage to trimming and edging.
OPERATIONS
The shop will continue to open on Saturdays from 9 to 1 for the next several weeks. Or, any time you see Chuck, John or Jeff we would be happy to sell you a few items of clothing, some golf balls, range tokens or a new putter or sand wedge. We are also accepting memberships. The CSA office will continue to sell range tokens during the
week. The practice greens and chipping area will remain closed for now. We also ask that you refrain from using the practice tee for chipping balls back and forth.
MEMBERSHIP AND GENERAL PRICING
Information is posted at the golf shop. Again, as the watering program continues around tee and green complexes irrigation heads will be popping up at regular intervals. They do not have eyes. If you are within range, you will be doused.
The next opportunity for a live briefing with Chuck & Shane on the renovation progress is scheduled for Friday, December 6th (Time and Place TBD).

Golf Carts in TGO: Slow Down & Make Those Stops
As you all know there are many golf carts here in TGO and they are always zipping around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, serious golf cart injuries are on the rise to the tune of approximately 13,000 per year requiring emergency room visits. Luckily, here in TGO, we haven’t had many serious mishaps and we hope this good record continues. Please don’t be a statistic; stop at stop signs, control your speed, and do not turn corners at high speeds.
COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES
Emergency Vehicle Protocol
Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.
CSA Trouble Calls: 321-268-9767
If you have questions about lawn spraying, getting sprinklers adjusted, or any other services provided by the Community Services Association, residents should contact the CSA Office by email at service@tgocsa.org or call 321-268-9767 to mention your concerns.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED
The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.
AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.
The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES
CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:
• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.
• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.
• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.
• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.
• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.
• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.
• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.
Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.
The crew has to pick this up!
• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!
CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.
Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO
There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:
• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.
• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.
• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.
• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.
• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.
• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.
NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

Quentin, you will be missed!
MEET TOM COLLINS (and crew)
text and photos: Greg
Tom Collins has an easy, relaxed energy. But it’s clear he has a quiet confidence, too, and doesn’t need to be the person getting all the attention.
We met a week ago at the Blue Heron to do photos of him and the rest of the team. The original plan was a batch of photos of just Tom, then the team, and finally the entire group. But a few minutes into discussing that plan he told me “let’s just do the me and the team. They’re the ones who do the work”.
Obviously, this is a man who understands, and appreciates, that everyone contributes to success—it’s not all about the person in charge.
Tell me a little about your background
Well, I was born and raised in the state of Michigan (GO BLUE!) and had lived there until my 30’s – at which time I relocated to AZ for the next decade; then, starting my eventual trek of living in many different areas. Between working in the airports and working for Cheesecake Factory I’ve lived in 5 states and 2 countries.
Who introduced you to cooking and the restaurant business?
Isn’t it always about a girl? My high school sweetheart worked at the local Denny’s so I got an after school job there, too!
How long have you been in food service/restaurant industry?
It’s been almost 43 years now. I’ve left off and on over the years trying other professions – typesetting, running printing presses, retail, professional sports – but always came back to this. This is what I really enjoy and what I consider “me”.
Did you know about TGO beforehand?
In the early 90’s, my family would camp here during winter vacations. It has come full circle for me.
How long have you been in restaurant management - what is the biggest challenge?
It’s been over 25 years now that I have watched the position of a “manager” grow and evolve from within the ranks. I think the biggest challenge is evolving with it. Those who haven’t grown with the position are usually the ones that we consider dinosaurs and have a rough time connecting with the staff and the guest who comes in. You have to be able to build a team that feels their opinion counts and has a buyin to your business. No one person is better than another because of a title, we all help each other. Bo Schembechler said it best -“The team, the team, the team”.
What about it gives you the most pleasure?
For myself, it’s watching my employees learn and grow. I’m only as good as my employees – they’re the ones who get it done, I just stand there and look pretty. I’ve been where they’re at and if I didn’t have someone in my corner supporting me I don’t know if I would’ve made it this far. Now it’s my turn to help others. Anything I can impart on them and then see it later from their actions or when I see my employees getting a thank you from a guest or another staff member I feel like a proud father. I love to brag about those who I’ve gotten promoted over the years – that’s my legacy living on.
What is your management philosophy?
I came up with my philosophy while working for Cheesecake. I call it BECK – Building relationships, E mpowering my staff, C onstant feedback, and Keeping communications open. People don’t quit a company, they quit a person. I want them to know this is their place as much as mine and to take pride in it. Everyone has input – you never know where a good idea may come from. I’ve been doing this long enough to know I DON’T have all the answers, but somebody else here probably will!
What’s your vision for Blue Heron?
I’m not here to re-invent the wheel. I’m here to make sure it rolls smoothly. I want it to be more than just a place to eat. We have so much untapped talent within the restaurant that I think would be a huge benefit to the community. I want my staff to know I’m here to help them succeed. We have a budding chef that hasn’t really been given a chance to push his boundaries yet and now feels like he’s getting the support he wants to really put on a show.
We have...another one who has a passion for pastries and trying to create her own cake business who we’re going to tap into to offer services within the community. We have another gentleman who’s been around as long as I have and is now in the same mindset as myself - that it’s our duty to impart our knowledge and experiences to the next generation. We have that foundation here of family and family first and I want people to know we will be there for each other whether they’re here or move on to other endeavors.
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I moved (back) to Florida to be closer to my parents and lend a helping hand when needed. If Michigan or the Lions are not on playing football, then its cars, my dogs, cars, beaches…and cars.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I traveled a lot in my youth – I’ve been [through] most of Europe and I was in Russia during the Cold War when The Wall was still up. Also, back in the 90’s – I got to spend a week with someone known as the most beautiful person in the World.
editor: when you see Tom, ask who that person was. We don’t know either!

Outdoors Community Church Presents
Funny Thing Is…
What? Has Sammy lost his mind? That’s the BEST gift? No that’s not what I said. I said the “most loving” gift is a fruitcake. Let me explain.
How many of your friends get to January 1st each year and their number one New Years Resolution is to “lose weight.” Of course. Let’s take a look at what’s been happening the last two months. It starts with Halloween. Everywhere you look there’s candy. The kids and grandkids can only eat so much so guess who’s stuck with downing the rest of it?
Add a couple of pounds to the stomach or hips then check out the calendar Oh oh. Here comes Thanksgiving.
Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy. I think there might be some veggies there somewhere but look, pumpkin pie (another holdover from Halloween), pecan pie, Dutch apple pie, lots of whip cream, and more. You can’t finish all that food in one day so the leftovers last until the first week of December. Then for the next three weeks you’re either going to holiday parties
or the office is having holiday parties and EVERYONE has candy or cookies on their desks. Get the calculator out because you’ve run out of fingers and toes to count the calories. December 25th comes along and guess what you’re gonna be doing after you finish opening Christmas presents?
Right. Eating, again! Can’t finish all that in one day so up until January 1st the fridge is full, and so are you.
Now you could give your friends chocolates, cakes, pies, and they would love it and love you until the pounds show up. Then they think you’re evil. Why do you think they call that kind of eating “DECADENT” ? So everyone else gave your friends calories and you gave them a fruitcake which they put in the street to create an artificial speed bump and slow down the neighborhood drag racers.
Who do you think they’re gonna love the most January 2nd?
-Dr. Sammy
Haappy

Calling all TGO Bowlers!
It’s getting close to the time for the 2025 TGO Bowling League!
Ruby Fox Logan will be the coordinator this year, as Jo-Anne Buckley has “retired” from the position after 18+ years! A big Thank You to her!
The schedule (all Wednesdays):
PRACTICE DATES - Cost is $5+tax for 3 games (includes shoe rental):
December 4, 2024, at 1 pm December 18, 2024, at 1 pm
Note: Both practice day formats will be “9-Pin No Tap”. This is a great way to try it out, especially if you have not yet bowled this way before! We will vote on the format on the first day of league per below.
LEAGUE - Cost is $11 per week (includes tax and shoe rental):
Start of League: Wednesday, January 8, 2025
Time: Noon on the first day for meeting & vote below; 1pm on all other Wednesdays
Length of League: 12 weeks (3 games per week)
Location: River Lanes, 800 Cheney Hwy, Titusville, FL 32780 Phone: 321-267-7118
Format: Fun League (no prizes or payouts). Since it was somewhat close on the 1st vote at the end of the last TGO league, WE WILL VOTE ON EITHER “9-PIN NO TAP” OR “REGULAR” BOWLING AT THE 1/8/25 MEETING. FYI, the only difference between “9-Pin No Tap” and “Regular” bowling is this: Knock down 9 pins on your first ball, counts as a strike! Everything else is the same – and it is a lot of fun!
Questions? Please text Ruby at 321-749-8642 or email: Ruby@lakesagency.com

HELP! My Apple Device Storage is Full! Apple Tips
Hey, iPhone, iPad or Mac owners….Picture this: you’re about to capture the perfect photo, but your Apple device smugly reminds you: “Storage Full.” Cue the groan. If this sounds like your life, let’s break down how this storage disaster happens, why it matters, and how you can reclaim space (and sanity).
How Does Your Apple Device Get So Full? It’s easy to underestimate how quickly storage fills up, often without you noticing:
1. Apps Gone Wild: Ever download an app you “might need later”? Multiply that by 50, and voilà, your storage is crying.
2. Photos and Videos: Those 100 selfies to get one good shot? Guilty. Videos? Storage vampires.
3. Messages and Attachments: Every GIF, meme, and “funny” video your cousin sends is secretly plotting against your storage.
4. Automatic Downloads: Your device might automatically download app updates, files from iCloud, or content shared across devices.
5. “Other” Storage: A mysterious black hole of cached files, system data, and app junk that Apple conveniently hides.
Why You Need Empty Storage
Your device isn’t just whining for the sake of it— Here’s a shocker: You always NEED 25% of your total storage capacity FREE! Why? Because free storage is crucial for:
1. System Updates: Major iOS updates need space to work their magic.
2. App Performance: Apps slow down when your device is overloaded.
3. Photos and Videos: Imagine losing that once-in-alifetime photo because there’s no room to save it.
4. System Stability: When your device is full, it can lag, overheat, or even crash. Nobody wants a meltdown—human or digital.
10+ Ways to Clear Out Space
1. Delete Unused Apps: Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, and offload unused apps.
2. Purge Photos and Videos: Use the Photos > Utilities > Duplicates feature to merge or delete duplicates.
3. Offload Messages: In Settings > Messages, set old messages to delete automatically after 30 days.
4. Review Attachments: Check Messages > Info > Photos/ Videos/Docs for large attachments to delete.
5. Clear Safari Cache: Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data.
6. Stream, Don’t Download: Use streaming services for music and videos instead of downloading content.
7. Offload Large Files: Transfer big files to a computer or external drive.
8. Empty Trash Folders: Files aren’t gone until you clear the trash in apps like Mail and Files.
9. Reduce HDR or 4K Video Settings: Lower your video recording resolution in Settings > Camera.
10. Clear App Data: Look for apps that hoard data, like Instagram or Spotify, and clear their caches in Settings.
Bonus: Use the Files app to identify and delete massive files lurking on your device.
With these tips, you’re well on your way to decluttering your Apple device and keeping it running smoothly. Let’s turn that dreaded “Storage Full” notification into a distant memory. Too Overwhelming?
Does this sound like too much work? No worries—I’ve got you covered! Click this link (facebook.com/MyAppleTechKris) for a quick and easy solution that will give you room to breathe. (Or follow me on FACEBOOK > My Apple Tech Kris)

Animals can experience time differently from humans.
To smaller animals, the world around them moves more slowly compared to humans. Salamanders and lizards, for example, experience time more slowly than cats and dogs. This is because the perception of time depends on how quickly the brain can process incoming information.
Water might not be wet.
This is because most scientists define wetness as a liquid’s ability to maintain contact with a solid surface, meaning that water itself is not wet, but can make other objects wet.
Wearing a tie can reduce blood flow to the brain by 7.5 per cent.
A study in 2018 found that wearing a necktie can reduce the blood flow to your brain by up to 7.5 per cent, which can make you feel dizzy, nauseous, and cause headaches. They can also increase the pressure in your eyes if on too tight and are great at carrying germs.

BEING FIREWISE IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS RV GOLF AND NATURE RESORT
- By Ed Brown
If you are a newcomer to TGO, Welcome! If you are returning to your home here from a Summer adventure, WELCOME BACK! The Great Outdoors is composed of RV rental sites (pads) and five types of residential structures. These homes range from 900 to 3500 square feet. There are at least 1700 homes and 800 yearround residents.
Now, I’m not promoting home sales. I am promoting FIREWISE in The Great Outdoors. Imagine the risk to this tidy residential setting represented by a fast-moving wildland fire on the river prairie, driven by a howling north, south, or west winter wind. Florida winters are mild and dry with brisk frontal winds. It was evident in 2007, when we formed the TGO Firewise Committee, that we had to address the wildfire risk and we have been doing just that!
There are dozens of “pads” for short-term stays or even long-term living, with full hookups. In addition, there are 3 pools, 5 bath houses, 2 fitness centers, multi-story meeting and entertainment structures, a wonderful nature center and museum, a library and an RV equipment and sales business, and a golf cart sales and

repair business. There is an 18-hole award-winning golf course, a pro shop and driving range, an excellent restaurant, and much more than I can list in the space allowed for this article. It was evident in 2007, when we formed the Firewise Committee, with help from Brevard County Fire Department, Fla Forestry, Brevard Sheriff’s Office, the TGO Board of Directors, St. John’s River Water Management, and TGO volunteers that we had to work out a FIREWISE SURVIVAL STRATEGY FOR TGO.
You Too can be a part of this.
Whether your interest is talking about Firewise or writing about this historic subject, staffing a Firewise information booth or table, or writing about this important and historic subject. There are teaching opportunities and next meeting will be on the first Wednesday in December at 9:00 AM, in the Pavilion. We’d love to see you there!
