The Largest Happenings EVER! 100 Pages in the Online Version!

There were a lot of spooky shenanigans going on in TGO this past week from a Couple’s Golf Tournament to the Halloween Social and the TGO Trick or Treat for the kids. This issue is jam-packed with new activities, information and lots of photos. So many photos there are 20 additional pages added to our online version, all blessed by our local priest and nun, Drew and Kim Proulx. Enjoy!

John Roberts - Our TGO Treasure

Born in Louisville, KY. Graduated with a degree in Biology. Served a couple years in the Army. Lived on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Made his living in the grocery business. Owned the largest collection of pearl handled knives in the country and has caught more Bass than any other person alive. Yes, we are talking about TGO’s John Roberts. John has been volunteering at TGO since he moved here over 27 years ago. John is a TGO treasure when it comes to volunteering; until recently, he was responsible for maintaining our lakes and stocking our fish. He created a beautiful park in front of Lake Judy complete with a Milkweed garden that attracts Monarch butterflies. There is so much more about John starting on page 38

TGO Activities Committee in Full Swing

After a very successful Halloween Social, our Activities Committee is just now getting started. November and December are loaded with plenty to do. Get ready to groove to The Gloria Estefan Experience on November 16. The TGO Golf Cart Parade will be on December 7 and then our New Year’s Eve Social will showcase the Anna Delgado Band. Make sure to bring your dance shoes for that one because this performance will rock the roof off the Manor. Then 2024 starts with the Name That Tune social, which should be lots of fun! Buy your tickets now! See page 24 for details.

Dear TGO Community, Tomorrow is Veterans Day. There are many veterans who live here in TGO. I extend a special thank you to all our veterans, for your service, bravery, and sacrifice for our country. On behalf of our CSA team, we are grateful that you served to maintain the freedom we enjoy today. The 2023-2024 Owners directory is now available for pick up. This is an easy-to-use phone book for all your TGO friends and neighbors. This issue of The Happenings includes a list of people who are distributing your free copy of the directory. Please join me in thanking Linda Zeitler for her many years of leadership as the producer of the TGO Directory. Linda has decided to retire from producing the yearly directory, and she is now looking for someone to take her place. See page 22 for the details. I’m happy to report that the interior renovation of the Oak Cove Bathhouse, located at 360 Oak Cove, is now complete. This bathhouse is the last of many low season improvement projects throughout our community. Please stop by to see the fine work done by our in-house buildings team (Guy, John and Mark). You will find custom tile showers and granite countertops, new flooring and stall partitions, and all new LED lighting and electrical. The bathhouse is ready to serve TGO residents and visitors for another 30 years. This week our grounds crew worked to clean up the trash, recycling and vegetative debris collection areas in our maintenance yard. We also reconfigured the layout of the yard to make it easier and more pleasant to use. The recycling bins have moved closer to the garbage compactor, and the vegetative debris collection area was moved. Our goal is to keep this area tidy and prevent people from discarding their bulk trash on the ground. Next week, TruGreen returns to TGO for their sixth and final comprehensive spraying of our lawns. They plan to spray all lawns south of the Addison Canal on Tuesday, November 14, and lawns north of Addison Canal (and Hammock Oaks) on Wednesday, November 15. This final treatment will include a liquid fertilizer (16-0-8 SRN 50% with micros), potassium 0-0-20, products called Manor and Dismiss for weed and sedge control. TruGreen will also spray fungicide and insecticide on properties where their techs determine they are needed. Please remove or secure lawn decorations and landscape lights that could be broken by their hoses. Please keep pets off the lawn until the spray product has dried. Call the CSA office by Monday at 12 pm if you wish to be on the “do not spray” list, otherwise your lawn will be treated. The next issue of The Happenings will be published on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. I wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. If you’d rather not cook a big Thanksgiving meal, Blue Heron will be hosting a Thanksgiving buffet along with Turkey and Ham carving stations. Reservations are required, and seatings will take place between 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Chuck and the golf shop staff will be hosting a special Black Friday sale to round out Thanksgiving weekend. This is a great opportunity to buy a Christmas gift at a big discount for your favorite golfers. Sincerely,

Billy Specht CSA Manager

REGENERATE YOUR BATTERIES! Now available at Golf Carts Unlimited What is Sulfation?

Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge. Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.

We Now Have the Capability to Reverse the Sulfation Process!

Here is how it works...

• Increase Your Battery Life-Span • Return Lost Capacity to Your Used Batteries • Keep Your Battery Pack(s) in Sulfate-Free Condition • Save Money on Purchasing New Batteries

Schedule a time to bring your cart in. We will hook it up to our Desulfator Machine. We will need your cart for 48 hours. Cost for a desulfination process including a complete diagnostic report - $250

Our Regeneration Process helps break down and dissolve the lead sulfate crystals, restoring the battery's performance. We will provide you with a detailed health report for each individual battery, including your battery pack’s performance both before and after the regeneration process. This process will extend the life of your batteries for multiple years, especially if you establish a yearly maintenance program. All work is done on premises at Golf Carts Unlimited. Call to make an appointment...

321-268-4882

Bring your cart to us and we'll provide a ride back to your home - and drop your cart off when complete.

Contractor Restrictions

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. Happenings Around The Great Outdoors

Russ and Lynn teamed up as the prisoner and jailer - they left the handcuffs at home.

We were sworn not to reveal his name. Your secret is safe with us, Dave.

Long gone are the days of finding tee times - the MGA is back in action and has a slew of golf days and tournaments on its schedule - which is another reason if you you like golf, and you are a man, you should stop by the Pro Shop and grab an MGA application. Just ask Rob... they’ll accept anybody.

A Life Dedicated to Lakeside Conservation and Bass Fishing

Getting To Know

John Roberts

You might be familiar with John Roberts through the numerous mentions of his volunteer work within these pages of The Happenings. You might have seen him driving his golf cart through TGO with the sign ‘Pond Monitor’ displayed on the front. You most likely have seen him around Lake Judy with weed-whacker in hand maintaining the grounds and patiently planting some of the 270 milkweed plants designed to attract the Monarch butterflies. No doubt, John is a great conservationist, but there is a lot more to this man than his well known deeds he performs throughout TGO. John was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He has one brother and two sisters. He went to the University of Louisville and graduated with a degree in Biology. He then served two years in the Army in the medical corps at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. “That’s where all the burn victims from the war went, “ explained John. “I primarily worked in the lab with regard to experimental surgery on animals so that the surgeons could perfect their techniques and then take their knowledge up to the burn ward, the Brooke Army Medical Center.” After the army, he went back to Louisville where he worked with his family in the grocery business. “My father worked for Kroger for 20 plus years, then bought a small store on Ashland Avenue and then enlarged it. He was in the business from the age of 17 to 65, when he died. The Roberts name was well known in South Louisville for being the best independent grocery store in the area. “We had a good reputation with customer counts of around 10,000 per week.” The grocery business wasn’t always kind as on several occasions the store would be robbed. During our interview, John’s brother, Marshall, who also lives in TGO part time, was on hand to reminisce about some of the stories. Some without very good endings. Marshall went on to tell us about some of John’s other passions. “Anything John does, he does big,” claimed Marshall.

38

“He was once big into Tuberous Begonias, then he got into pearl handled knives and became the best expert on them in the United States. He had the largest collection of pearl handled knives in the United States, maybe the world, until he was robbed of them at gunpoint. His wife and daughter were tied up.” “The robber came into my house and pointed a .45 in my face, explained John. ‘It was scary to say the least.” John had a second home on Lake Winnipesaukee in Meredith, New Hampshire as he continued working in the grocery business. John had always had a love for fishing and Lake Winnipesaukee was the perfect place to start his quest of catching 100,000 fish, particularly Bass. It was an ambitious goal to say the least which he recently accomplished here in the lakes of TGO. 63,000 plus of those fish have been caught here in TGO. The remaining 37,000 were caught in his RV travels from California to Nova Scotia. His largest Bass to date is 18 lbs. 4 oz. a stunning 29” long. John caught that fish here in TGO on December 10, 2016. “I started fishing in 1994 quite a lot. In 2017 I only missed one day of fishing the whole year.” Starting in 1998, John wrote down every detail of every fish he caught. He has volumes of journals, one for each year, describing each fish he hooked including the weight, the length, which reel and line he used, the weather conditions, the time of day and more.

John and his brother Marshall have spent a lot of time together working in the grocery business and fishing. Marshall purchased a home in TGO about seven years ago so he can spend a bit more time with his brother. These two are great storytellers.

BassMaster Magazine has awarded John 41 certificates over the years showing that he has hooked and landed a trophy largemouth bass over 10 pounds. John has also had several articles printed about his fishing prowess including the February 10, 2010 edition of Florida Today recognizing him as an elite fisherman It was in 2005 that John started to help improve our lakes by personally asking the EPA for advice on plants that benefited our lakes. They gladly came to TGO and provided him with the information. John and his crews have planted Pickerelweed, Arrowhead, Canna Lilies, Blue Flag Iris, Ferns and other plants over the years in and around our 32 ponds. All the time picking up trash around our ponds. For nearly 20 years John has been in charge of stocking our ponds, relying on assistance from our Nature Center volunteers to help with the project. Prior to this, CSA paid a supervisor and employees to do the stocking. Until recently, John has done a monthly pond topic talk about our ponds at the Nature Center for the past 10-12

years. In addition, twice a year he provides CSA a written report about pond conditions and recommendations. He is responsible for procuring our present Grass Carp permit from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. He established TGO as a Monarch waystation with over 270 Milkweed plants for our butterflies and for the past six years has personally paid for and planted Milkweed plants along Lake Judy for the Monarchs to feed on. “While In New Hampshire, there was a 2-3 mile loop that I would walk all the time and pick up trash. When I started coming here, in 1998, I started picking up trash right away because I could see there was a need for that. I always thought there was a great need to keep this place clean and beautiful. I wanted to make it nice for the people here because it’s a great place to live. I planned to live here for many years and I wanted to take care of it. I started picking up along the roadways and around the lakes, and of course, I was also fishing.” Several years ago, John provided TGO homeowners and outsiders a Keep Brevard Beautiful tour of Lake Judy’s wetContinued...

39

John has numerous journals with tedious notes about every bass he caught. The length, weight, weather conditions, exact location and more...

lands and what we are doing for our Monarch butterflies. For approximately 10 years, six days a week, John has weed-whacked the buffer zone around Lake Judy and its wetlands. In January 2022 he had to discontinue this work due to health issues but he still continues to pick up trash along our roadways while out in his cart. “We need people who will help take on the pond maintenance. Lake Judy has cattails right now that need to be cut. We need help to weed-whack, broadcast weed control and take care of this area along with all the ponds. The ponds can’t take care of themselves” John was named TGO volunteer of the year for 2011-2012 and because of all of his volunteer work, he has saved TGO thousands of dollars. At the north end of Lake Judy, there is a bench that John purchased that has his first wife’s name on the plaque. Six years ago, he married Clariece, who lived across the street. John’s health has declined in the past 17 months. He has had four operations, has lost his sense of taste and is down 50 pounds - and has another surgery scheduled later this month. When you talk to John, you’ll notice his health is not at its peak but at 88, his mind is still as sharp as the 100,000 hooks he used catching those Bass.

40

BassMaster Magazine honored John with numerous awards recognizing his accomplishments in hooking and landing trophy sized bass.

The bench that overlooks the point at Lake Judy. John purchased this bench in honor of his first wife. Her name, Annette, is on the plaque.

Being FIREWISE inThe Great Outdoors

By Ed Brown If you are a newcomer to TGO, Welcome! If you are returning to your home here from a summer adventure, WELCOME BACK! The Great Outdoors is composed of RV rental sites (pads) and five types of residential structures. These homes range from 900 to 3500 square feet. There are at least 1600 homes and 600 year-round residents. There are dozens of “pads” for short-term stays or even long-term living, with full hook-ups. In addition, there are three pools, five bathhouses, two fitness centers, multi-story meeting and entertainment structures, a wonderful nature center and museum, a library, an RV equipment and sales business, and a golf cart sales and repair business. There is an 18hole award-winning golf course, a pro shop and driving range, an excellent restaurant, and much more than I can list in the space allowed for this article. Now, I’m not promoting home sales. I am promoting FIREWISE in The Great Outdoors. Imagine the risk to this tidy residential setting represented by a fast-moving wildland fire on the river prairie, driven by a howling north, south or west winter wind. Florida winters are mild and dry with brisk frontal winds. It was evident in 2007, when we formed the TGO Firewise Committee, with help from Brevard County Fire Dept., Florida Forestry, Brevard Sheriff’s Office, the TGO Board of Directors, St John’s River Water Management and TGO volunteers, that we had to address the wildfire risk and work out a FIREWISE SURVIVAL STRATEGY FOR TGO and we have been doing just that! You too can be a part of this. Whether your interest is talking about Firewise, writing about this critical subject, staffing a Firewise information booth or table or writing about this important and historic subject, there is a place for you. There are also teaching opportunities. Our next meeting will be on the first Wednesday in December at 1:00 in the Pavillion. We would love to see you there! Be Firewise TGO... Be Safe!

The Firewise Committee is looking for someone who is interested in helping prepare for and prevent wildland fires at TGO. If you are interested in being part of this effort and get involved in the community, stop by the CSA office and pick up an application or go online to tge CSA website: www.TGO CSA.org then click on CSA Documents/Forms/Application for committee assignments. Fill out the form and bring it to the CSA office.

Funny Thing Is… Courage or Insanity

There is a razor thin line between courage and insanity. For instance, I wonder who tests the bungee jumping cord for the first time? Did you ever wonder why you never hear about them? Courageous or insane? Like Jeff Foxworthy surmises, “Ok, shorten it up a couple of feet and give his family a tee shirt.” People do some crazy things and sometimes I wonder how they ever got started. You know, like how did the first skydiver know what equipment to take? Do you think somebody was just sitting around drinking beer one night and said, “I wonder what would happen if I jumped out of a plane?” His buddies were probably picturing him jumping out of a doorway of a plane while on the tarmac, but he was no doubt thinking about a couple thousand feet up. Well, somebody must have tried it first, but you never hear about them, do you? And what about those bullet proof vests? I know they probably tried it on a mannequin the first time, but then some human had to strap one on eventually and have a bullet fired at his chest. What are these people thinking? Are they ridiculously brave or out of their minds? We all admire bravery but, in the case of daredevils, is it bravery? Alcoholism? Insanity? Need for attention? Do you ever wonder what people would be thinking at a cocktail party with the Wallendas? You know, the high wire daredevils. ImaginWW Nik Wallenda’s dad bragging that his son crossed the Grand Canyon walking on a tight wire less than two inches wide. Most would be thinking, “I wouldn’t brag that my kid’s career choice was to risk being a buzzard buffet at the bottom of a ravine.” My response would be, “Why?” Do you think they have a sign in their house that says, “If at first you don’t succeed...” There is a lot of bravery in the world today but you’ll never guess who I admire the most for guts, bravery, and courageousness. It’s the guys who mow the medians of major highways. I don’t think they get paid as much as the Wallendas, but look at what they do. Wearing no protective gear except a yellow vest and headphones, they slalom around bee and wasp infested bushes while cutting grass mere inches from semis going 70+ mph. Now that’s courage, or is it insanity? - Dr. Sammy -
