MANAGER’S CORNER

Dear TGO Residents,

TGO is in high gear right now, and I sincerely hope you are enjoying everything this season has to offer. This issue of The Happenings is full of information about activities, clubs, concerts and other assorted events. There’s something for everyone here at TGO, and that’s what makes this resort such a unique and amazing place to live.

I’ve heard many positive comments about the Golf Course Renovation Video that was premiered at the 2025 Annual Members Meeting. If you were unable to attend the owners meeting, you will find this video on our TGOCSA.org website. Please take a moment to watch it, share it on social media, or email it to friends and family. I extend another big ‘thank you’ to TGO owner Doug Jensen for his excellent production work.

Sheriff Ivey was here at TGO on Wednesday to speak with our owners about public safety and answer questions. He shared that he is hosting a Citizens Academy here at TGO this Spring. Over six weekly sessions, participants of this program will experience demonstrations from all facets of our Sheriff’s agency, from Corrections to Aviation, from Bomb Squad to Animal Services and many more. If you’re interested in being a part of this program, and you will be here during the months of April and May, please contact Carmella Galley in The Manor. You can email her at manor@tgocsa.com. Space is limited so please reach out soon.

The CSA crews are busy with several projects throughout TGO. Now that the weather is cool and dry, our infrastructure team is improving our stormwater drainage pathways, most recently around the shuffleboard courts, the Manor and the Rally Lot. Our buildings crew is repairing the concrete parking lot across from the Blue Heron Restaurant and next week they will be improving on our golf course cart path. Our lawn crew is out mowing this week since we saw some growth and green-up of our lawns during these first three weeks of warmer weather in February. The team is practicing a new cut-cycle that we plan to fully implement this summer to help our efficiency.

I am seeing record-setting days of play on our new golf course, and very busy dining rooms in our Blue Heron restaurant. The teams who are operating the golf course and restaurant are working very hard to serve our golfers and diners now. I want to send a shout-out to them for their hard work during this season. Please know that your efforts are noticed and appreciated. I’ve heard so many positive comments about our new Blue Heron menu and ½ portion meals, and many people are also talking about the improved quality of golf play. Some are grumbling that it can be difficult to get a tee-time, but that’s a class A problem to have for sure.

The golf course will be closed for maintenance next Tuesday, Feb 25th for aerification. The CSA Board Meeting originally planned for Wed, Feb 19th has been rescheduled for Wed, Feb 26th at 3pm. Enjoy this Florida weather, and as always, please contact me at the CSA office if the CSA team or I can be of direct service to you.

FROM THE EDITOR

Inspiration can arrive in the most unexpected places, hidden in the rhythm of daily life. Watching a Titusville Public Works street sweeper meticulously clear my road, making extra passes to ensure every bit of sand and leaves was removed, was a reminder to me that dedication and pride in one’s work can turn even routine tasks into something remarkable. His effort wasn’t just about cleaning the street—it was a quiet demonstration of diligence and care, qualities that can uplift and motivate —if we take the time to notice.

Moments like these remind me that inspiration isn’t reserved for grand achievements or famous figures. It can be found in the everyday acts of people who take their responsibilities seriously, no matter how small the task may seem. Whether it’s a neighbor tending their garden with patience, or a street sweeper ensuring a job well done, these simple acts of dedication can encourage us to approach our own work and lives with the same level of care and commitment.

By paying attention to these moments, we not only gain a fresh perspective but also an opportunity to reflect on our own efforts. The world is full of unsung moments of excellence—sometimes, all it takes is a wave and a thumbs-up to recognize them. I made sure to catch that driver on his last pass!

Golf Carts in TGO: Slow Down & Make Those Stops

As you all know there are many golf carts here in TGO and they are always zipping around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, serious golf cart injuries are on the rise to the tune of approximately 13,000 per year requiring emergency room visits. Luckily, here in TGO, we haven’t had many serious mishaps and we hope this good record continues. Please don’t be a statistic; stop at stop signs, control your speed, and do not turn corners at high speeds.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES

Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

CSA Trouble Calls: 321-268-9767

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:

• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.

The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

WHAT’S THE STORY ON HOUSE NUMBERS, NOW?

The park manager was asked, by a TGO resident at a recent Condo meeting “Why are some houses or pads in TGO not numbered and how can they get numbers?” Of course, the need for numbering is obvious: for Safety, for Deliveries, for Visitors, for Service Calls.

How do home or pad numbers go missing and what can you do about it?

1. Weather: Rain, Wind, Fire. can remove the numbers. Solution: replace them. Fill out a work order at the CSA office.

2. Abrasion: They are scratched, faded, unreadable, defaced or removed.

Solution: replace them. Fill out a work order at the CSA office.

3. You never, ever had a house number! Solution: FILL OUT A WORK ORDER AT THE CSA OFFICE! Get your number.

4. Trees and bushes are hiding your house number. Solution: Don’t bother CSA with this one. Get out the clippers and allow the numbers to be seen. Keep visibility good by regular trimming.

If you wish to repaint your pad numbers yourself, the CSA office can loan you the stencils

If you wish to attach new house numbers on an existing post or building exterior, you do not need ARC approval

It is distressing for me to recall the times that an incorrect or incomplete address delayed my arrival at a rescue scene or a fire.

My Fire Department, MIAMI DADE COUNTY F.D. was the largest fire department in the Southeatern U.S.. We had a huge response area, a hundred fire stations and an excellent dispatch office to get a correct address for a fire/rescue response and yet there were times when an incorrect address or missing house numbers contributed to delays that cost lives.

Stay on the phone with the Fire Alarm Dispatcher if no smoke or fire are visible.

Describe the house and point responders in the right direction. Don’t leave the scene, but, for your safety, stay out of the way. The fire department person in charge (incident commander) may have some questions for you.

I trust that on my next house number inspec tion tour I will see better house numbering in TGO.

It is, after all, In the interest of safety and benefit of all of us living in The Great Outdoors.

The multi-use nature trail and dog walk are maintained by TGO/ CSA. They mow part of the Betty Salter Trail as a fire break for the wastewater treatment plant. However, all other trails are maintained by the Nature Center (a 501(c)(3) entity, separate from TGO/CSA), including the Carlson Trail and part of the Watson Trail located on CSA property.

We work with St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) to stay in compliance with their regulations, and we provide them all our trail guides and digital maps. Maintenance and trail map printing/distribution are not included in our quarterly TGO fees. They are a Nature Center amenity in cooperation with SJRWMD. They exist for everyone’s hiking pleasure, thanks to our Nature Center volunteers!

Welcoming the Purple Martins!

Have you wondered about those strange white gourds hanging from poles near the bank of Lake Judy?

They are actually Purple Martin houses set up each year by a dedicated team from the TGO Nature Center.

The Purple Martin is a beautiful songbird who’s numbers are seriously declining - in fact over the last 55 years over 24% of these birds are gone. This decline is largely due to invasive bird species, and enormous habitat loss. You see, without human help, Purple Martins would be gone forever.

Volunteers from the TGO Nature Center are making a difference for these endangered birds! This year, Scott Akers, Ron Peoples, Dori Peoples and Christine Kynoch once again removed the houses from storage and set them up in anticipation of this year ’s nesting pairs. There are currently 48 gourd bird houses which have been donated or procured by the TGO Nature Center. They hang from a winch and cable system so they can be raised and lowered.

The nesting season runs from January until June. At that time, volunteers remove the houses, clean them out for the next season and return them to a storage locker. The gourds are numbered so that nesting can be tracked. Purple Martins like to live in a community. One year, we had 20-25 nesting pairs. Last year, we had fewer nestings however according to Scott Akers 2-4 pairs have already moved in. Hopefully this will be a good year for increasing our Purple Martin population.

Using gourds to attract these birds was started by ancient Native Americans. Today, the gourds are made from plastic and have access for easy cleaning. The gourds are the perfect shape and size for purple Martins and hole diameter and size is designed to keep out unwanted birds.

Scott Akers heads up the initiative to keep the Purple Martin nesting program running at TGO. “Purple Martins like to live in an open area near water, in fact they will swoop to drink water from the lake while they are flying,” says Scott. “I’ve been fascinated with these birds my whole life. My Grandparents had gourds at their home in Iowa when I was growing up. When I moved to the country in the 1980’s, I put up Purple Martin houses at my own home. You can usually see the Purple Martins flying in the morning between 6:30 and 7:30AM. A few mornings ago I saw between 30 - 35 flying above my home here atTGO. You will usually see them flying very high in the sk.”

After nesting here, Purple Martins fly to Brazil for the winte, then return again in spring.

Scott Akers and his team can always use help to clean the houses and set them up each year to keep this wonderful conservation effort going! Please reach him to help at aksc13@gmail.com or 319-360-0962.

Did you know… Purple Martins eat almost 3 billion insects per year. They love mosquitoes! They snack on insects while in flight (aerial insectivores).

ALS WALK 2025

Scoopie, from Culver’s Frozen Custard, was this year’s Grand Marshall and the official Ribbon Cutter for the start of the walk.
What’s a party without the TGO Clowns?
250 happy walkers participated with just a little rain at the start.

This year’s Annual ALS Fundraiser Walk was a tremendous success, with over 250 participants and nearly 80 major sponsors and donors. Several sponsors set up tables inside The Manor, offering snacks and water for the walkers.

Debbie Grondin, who has organized the event for seven years, continues to see it grow in success each year. This year, nearly $17,000 was raised, all of which will go to the Orlando ALS Chapter to support the search for a cure.

Debbie extends her heartfelt thanks to her friends, family, donors, sponsors, and all participants for making this year’s event such a success. She looks forward to seeing everyone again next year!

Thank you to Robin Francis for all the fantastic photographs!

Norah Schmidt and Scoopie represented Culver’s Frozen Custard.
Tony, Rick and Doug from the CSA Patrol managed the traffic.
Dr. Brittany Marshall and kids from Mission Family Medicine.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR: SCOTT LEWIS

Volunteers make TGO Great

Every year we recognize a volunteer of the year – someone who has put their time and talent to work – Making TGO Great. We want to thank Donnette Hilton who makes this award happen every year. This is how it works:

Members of the community submit nominations to the Board of Directors and anyone can nominate (this year we received fifteen nominations). The Board of Directors then vote by private ballot to select the deserving resident.

About this year’s winner, Scott Lewis: all you have to do is mention the name Scott Lewis and dozens, If not hundreds, of owners in this park know him and know how much work he has done putting the Nature Trail into the best condition ever. He came to TGO about two years ago, with his wife Tracey, from the state of Washington. Shortly after purchasing their house on Windsong Way he started filling In holes on the Nature Trail. He continues to work daily/weekly keeping the Nature Trail In excellent condition and maintaining other areas in TGO. Many of us who walk, bike, and ride the Nature Trail have stopped to talk to Scott to thank him for the work he does.

Congratulations to SCOTT LEWIS!

Apple Tips

TIP #3 TEST YOUR TECH SAVVY!

Think you’ve got a handle on today’s technology? Or are you still convinced Wi-Fi comes from invisible hamsters on tiny wheels? It’s time to put your tech knowledge to the test with a quick quiz that’ll separate the savvy from the “I thought the cloud was just weather.” Don’t worry—no one’s grading you, and there are no pop-up ads involved. Just read these statements, decide if they’re true or false, and see how many tech myths you’ve been unknowingly spreading at dinner parties. Ready?

1. T F “Streaming in 4K always gives you the best quality.”

2. T F “AI understands what it’s saying.”

3. T F “Closing apps on your iPhone saves battery life.”

4. T F “Using a magnet near your computer could result in yourPC’s instant death.”

5. T F “The reCAPTCHA image chooser proves you’re a human”

6. T F “You should always use your monitor’s highest resolution.”

7. T F “Public charging stations are safe to use.”

8. T F “Apple will never make a folding phone”

9. T F “Smartwatches track with medical-grade accuracy”

10. T F “If you delete a photo from your iPhone, it’s gone forever.”

11. T F “You need expensive HDMI cables for better quality”

12.

T F “5G causes cancer.”

13. T F “You should always let your phone’s battery drain fully before recharging.”

14. T F “Bluetooth uses your phone’s data, so it’s better to keep it off.”

15. T F “The only safe password is one you can easily remember, like your dog’s name.”

To check your wisdom, circle your choice of true or false, and check your answers on page 65!

OBITUARIES

Pamela Ann McMahon (née Godwin)

August 18, 1942 – February 8, 2025

Pamela Ann McMahon, 82, of Titusville, Florida, passed away on February 8, 2025. She was born on August 18, 1942, in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, as the eldest of three daughters, preceding her sisters Marilyn and Susan Godwin.

Pam dedicated her life to caring for others, serving as a nurse and later as a beloved school nurse at Chichester Junior High School in Chichester, Pennsylvania. Her compassion and warmth left a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues.

She was first married to Theodore James Gaskell, who passed away in 1976. On January 31, 1981, she found love again and married Charles P. McMahon, with whom she recently celebrated 44 years of marriage. Together, they retired to The Great Outdoors in Titusville, Florida, and spent many joyful years traveling the East Coast in their motorhome.

Pam was the devoted mother of seven children: Bryan, Daniel, Theodore, Stephen, Michael, Payge, and Dina. She was a proud grandmother to nine grandchildren: Miyabi, Kennedy, Gabriella, Danielle, Summer, Lucas, Jorian, Madeleine, and Colby. Family was at the heart of everything she did, and she found immense joy in their happiness.

She had a deep love for owls, cherished the color scarlet, and was known for her infectious smile that could brighten any room. Pam’s warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for her family and friends will be deeply missed.

A celebration of her life was held on Saturday, February 15, at 1 PM at The Great Outdoors Community Church. Please keep her spirit in your heart.

TECH QUIZ ANSWERS!

1. FALSE! Slow internet causes buffering or lower resolution. Some 1080p streams look better than compressed 4K.

2. FALSE! AI predicts words, not thinks. No understanding, no emotions—just fancy autocomplete.

3. FALSE! Force-closing apps drains battery. Too many open apps slow phones. Restart to clear cache.

4. FALSE! SSDs aren’t affected by magnets—old hard drives and monitors might be.

5. FALSE! CAPTCHA wastes 819M hours. Google profits $6.1B from your clicks.

6. FALSE! Higher resolution lowers frame rates. 1080p or 1440p is a good balance.

7. FALSE! Public chargers risk “juice jacking.” Use a data blocker or your own charger.

8. FALSE! Apple might make a foldable iPhone—just like they once denied big screens.

9. FALSE! Smartwatches track trends, not diagnose. See a doctor, not your wrist.

10. FALSE! Deleted photos sit in ‘Recently Deleted’ for 30 days before vanishing.

11. FALSE! HDMI is digital—$10 cables work as well as $100 ones.

12. FALSE! WHO found no 5G health risks. It’s like 4G and Wi-Fi—harmless.

13. FALSE! Lithium-ion batteries last longer when kept between 20%-80%.

14. FALSE! Bluetooth uses no cellular data. It’s not a gas-powered toaster.

15. FALSE! Hackers try pet names first. Make passwords so complex even you doubt yourself.

TGO MARKETPLACE

NOTICES

HOW YOU CAN HELP OUR TGO MAIL OPERATION RUN SMOOTHLY...

1. Please wait at least two hours from the time you receive a notice on your phone or computer that your package has arrived before coming to the post office. Here’s how it works... The truck backs up to post office, scans the packages and puts them in the office, but they don’t put the packages in the parcel lockers or place the pink slips in the box. That’s what Kathy and her team does, so that two hour time period is necessary for them to sort packages and put the notices in the boxes or the packages in the parcel lockers.

2. Empty your mailbox at least every other day. Don’t let it accumulate for more than two days. The boxes are small and if they get too full, the mail has to be put into a holding box and put on a shelf and there is very limited space. Shelf space is designated for mail that is being held Please don’t treat the post office as a storage facility.

TGO SHRED DAY

3. Rather than calling to ask if there is a package for you, please go look for yourself. Between all the mail and packages, they don’t have time to look for everyone’s packages. There will be a key or pink slip in your box if you have a package.

4. If you are running a business out of your house and need lots of supplies, please don’t rely on our post office for your supplies. Please order them from USPS (where they are free) or other supply sites. Our post office has limited space for shipping boxes, bags and labels.

5. If you are leaving for the summer and want your mail held, please know that your mail can be held for free for 30 days. Just let the post office know you will be gone so they can collect your mail. There is a form you will need to fill out. If you want your mail forwarded, there is a small fee of $25 per month plus postage to facilitate this service.

Shred Day will take place in the Manor Parking lot on Thursday March 13, between the hours of 1:00pm and 3:00pm.

We have a rain date set for Friday, March 14,2025, if we have to cancel the 13th due to weather.

NO EARLY DROP OFFS: All material must be delivered by a resident at or after 1:00pm and must be dropped off before 2:50pm.

Material MUST be in “ready to shred” condition. This means residents should not bring file folders, paper clipped material, plastic wraps of folders, plastic bags, etc If materials are not ready-to-shred, the resident will be asked to step out of line, prepare their materials and return with material suitable for shredding. This will help to keep the line moving.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Marilyn Adams via email, ma521@comcast.net or phone 517-673-2110.
