Toys For Tots

‘Tis the season to open not just our hearts but also our wallets. Toys for Tots, a program created by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, seeks to bring joy to underprivileged children during the holiday season. It holds a special place in the heart of our Golf Pro, Chuck Kandt. Established in 1947, this charitable endeavor collects new, unwrapped toys and distributes them to economically disadvantaged children nationwide. Recognized for its compassion and generosity, Toys for Tots has become a symbol of goodwill. Look for those iconic Toys for Tots boxes positioned just outside our Pro Shop - they may be mere toys to us, but they mean the world to a less fortunate child.

Tennis Anyone?

Tennis has a long and complex history. Its roots date back to 19th-century England. Major Walter Clopton Wingfield is often credited with popularizing lawn tennis. In 1874, the first tennis courts with a rectangular shape and a net were set up at the Marylebone Cricket Club in London. These courts closely resembled the four modern tennis courts you’ll find here at TGO. But the best part is the fun-loving members of our TGO Tennis Club. Exercise is a major component to the sport of tennis, but it also provides a great opportunity to socialize and connect with new and old friends. Our club is always looking for new members. See page 34 on how to become involved.

Manager’s Corner November 24, 2023 100 D Plantation Drive • Titusville, FL 32780 • 321-268-9767 Dear TGO Community, Happy “Black Friday” everyone! Today we officially begin the winter holiday season by feasting on Thanksgiving leftovers and going shopping. The CSA office is closed today, but our Golf Shop is open and offering a Black Friday sale. Blue Heron is now offering gift cards in all increments. TGO golf and dining are great gift options for friends and neighbors. This Monday our Beautifications Committee will decorate TGO common areas for the holiday season. I wish to thank our hard-working District 4 Board Member Lauren Clark and her committee members for their decorating efforts and holiday spirit. The CSA team looks forward to supporting the many upcoming holiday celebrations in our community such as the Golf Cart Parade, TGO Church Holiday Concerts, the Christmas Holiday De-Lites and New Years Eve celebrations. I’ve learned that no community does Christmas and the holidays like TGO does! It’s wonderful to see the beautiful Christmas lights and decorations hung on your homes. I look forward to an evening drive down Twin Lakes and Fairways every year with my family. Check out our TGOCSA.Org website. It was recently updated with new colors and a fresh layout. The website is now live but in “version one” status, and it’s easy for us to update it as needed, and upload new documents and information. Your feedback is appreciated. I’d like to thank Carmella Galley and Sharon Sanford for their time and effort to create this new look. Bottles, Cans, Plastic Jugs, Paper and Cardboard… that’s what we recycle here at TGO. All of these recyclable items should be rinsed and clean. Cardboard must be flattened, and all packing material must be placed into the garbage. When in doubt, throw it out! Poor recycling habits here at TGO will cost us, as Waste Management will fine up to $350 per load when contamination is found in recycling containers at the sorting center. We have spent time and money cleaning up our garbage and recycling area in the maintenance yard, now we need your help and support to keep it clean and organized. It’s the holiday season, and the CSA office has placed a box out for the 2023 Employee Holiday Fund. I wish to remind you that 100% of these funds go to our full-time, front-line, non-management, CSA staff. The people who benefit from your kind contributions are the people you see working in the field each day to make this community a great place to live. Your contribution will honor their hard work in 2023 and we are taking contributions through December 31. I will close my article with a BIG thank you to the CSA golf, restaurant and courtesy patrol teams. One week ago today, on Friday, November 17, we hosted the 33rd annual YMCA Golf Classic Tournament with 144 golfers and over 30 volunteers. This tournament raised over $50K to fund youth sports programs for those Titusville children in need. This is perhaps the largest one-day golf event held at TGO, and the comments from our guests were outstanding. The tournament got a late start due to four days of rain leading up to the start time. Chuck and Shane modified the format to play 18 holes of Par-3 golf. Many of our guests commented that only TGO could’ve pulled off hosting this tournament given the weather conditions. Thank you to those owners who loaned their personal golf cart to allow this tournament to happen. Sincerely, Billy Specht CSA Manager

Billy Specht and Cliff Creech congratulate Mike O’Neal for his 20 years of service to our TGO Community.

REGENERATE YOUR BATTERIES! Now available at Golf Carts Unlimited What is Sulfation?

Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge. Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.

We Now Have the Capability to Reverse the Sulfation Process!

Here is how it works...

• Increase Your Battery Life-Span • Return Lost Capacity to Your Used Batteries • Keep Your Battery Pack(s) in Sulfate-Free Condition • Save Money on Purchasing New Batteries

Schedule a time to bring your cart in. We will hook it up to our Desulfator Machine. We will need your cart for 48 hours. Cost for a desulfination process including a complete diagnostic report - $250

Our Regeneration Process helps break down and dissolve the lead sulfate crystals, restoring the battery's performance. We will provide you with a detailed health report for each individual battery, including your battery pack’s performance both before and after the regeneration process. This process will extend the life of your batteries for multiple years, especially if you establish a yearly maintenance program. All work is done on premises at Golf Carts Unlimited. Call to make an appointment...

321-268-4882

Bring your cart to us and we'll provide a ride back to your home - and drop your cart off when complete.

Contractor Restrictions

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA. From Monday through Saturday, contractors must leave TGO by 6:00 pm from October 1 to April 30 and by 7:00 pm from May 1 to September 30. Call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767 during regular weekday office hours to request any exceptions to these contractor work restrictions.

Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

Community Information & Notices CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules: • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have. • Tie bags together if they are all light in weight. • Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. Please do not allow pets to • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. urinate on trash or debris. • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park. The crew has to pick this up! • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes. If you come across Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO NOTE: an aggressive alligator,

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby: • It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator. • Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes. • Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline. • Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes. • While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources. • Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

18

please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE!

If you have an issue with an alligator, or any animals within TGO, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073 or Nancy Clark at 321-292-1434. These ladies are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

When is the top of a mountain similar to a savings account? The answer is somewhere in this issue.

The application dates for 2024 will be available in a future issue of The Happenings. TruGreen is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the TruGreen list. TruGreen advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. Love Tennis? Come Join Us! The TGO Tennis Club is a group of fun loving members who like to get out for some fresh air, exercise and socializing. The club has people of various levels of play, some more intense than others. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the club has “doubles match play.” We have a coordinator who takes the names of those available and sets up the partnerships and who plays whom. They keep track of the scores, and at the end of the season there are awards.

The Club has a potluck dinner and meeting every third Wednesday at 4:30 pm at the Pavilion. At the end of the “snowbird” season the Club has a more formal buffet dinner in the Heron’s Nest at the Blue Heron. Half of the $20 member dues goes toward this dinner. During the season we also have a few “fun and games” afternoons out on the courts. Everyone brings a snack and beverage and we set up teams and play games thought up On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, we have a “doubles and organized by the Board. round robin.” Anyone who wants to participate just shows So, if you want to learn how to play tennis, or just want to up at the courts at 9:00 am. Happenings Around The Great Outdoors

Nancy Wagner (left) hosted the Newcomers meeting. Carmella Zielinski was on hand representing the Activities Committee while Wayne Condra spoke to the group about the history of our golf course and the role it plays at TGO.

There were lots of pamphlets, brochures, maps and information related to TGO made available to the new residents. Sherry Ward was in charge of handing out the informational collateral.

David and Dawn Addison were explaining to CSA Manager, Billy Specht, how nice and easy it was to work with the CSA front office.

Butch Jones was representing the Firewise program, to explain the importance of the program to TGO. Chris Miller talked about our TGO wildlife.

The most recent Newcomer Orientation Meeting took place on Monday, November 13 inside the Manor. There were about 30 new residents in attendance who had a chance to hear from our TGO Guest Speakers including Billy Specht from the CSA Office, Leon LeBlanc from ARC, Tony Del Monte from Courtesy Patrol, Dolly Akers from the Nature Centure, Wayne Condra representing our Golf Course, Carmella Zielinski on behalf of the Activities Committee, Butch Jones, the chairman of Firewise and more. Even our Board Chairman, Cliff Creech, was in attendance and explained why the improvements to our golf course were absolutely necessary and how these improvements insure the property values of all our properties. Residents were encouraged to ask questions and there was a drawing that included Blue Heron and Golf Shop gift cards and other door prizes. The next Newcomer Orientation will be on Monday, January 8, 2024 from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm. Bring your questions and let our panel of experts answer them. Call Nancy Wagner at 607-542-6374 to reserve your spot so we will have enough seating and handouts for everyone.

Vero Beach Kamp/Sebastian Clambake Rally The TGO Ambassadors kicked off the season with a rally at Vero Beach Kamp, located in downtown Wabasso, FL, just 71 miles from The Great Outdoors RV Resort. The rally was held from November 2- 6. Hosts Gary and Teri Henry, along with co-hosts Alan and Bev Miller, held a welcome back dinner for the 21 rigs that attended. The group attended the three-day Clambake Festival, at Riverview Park, just four miles from Vero Beach Kamp. The event included live entertainment, arts and crafts, vendors, beer, clam chowder, linguine with clam sauce, clam stripes, fried fish and shrimp, along with a variety of other food items. The proceeds go to local charities. Most of the members visited the Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum, and learned how the Sebastian area became known as the “Florida’s Treasure Coast.” On July 24 , 1715, a fleet of eleven Spanish galleons and one French ship set sail from Havana, Cuba to Spain. All the Spanish vessels perished in a storm off the east coast of Florida, near present day Sebastian. Seven hundred lives were lost and over 14,000,000 pesos worth of treasure. When you enter Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum you will join the millions who have witnessed the most spectacular collection of Spanish artifacts and treasures ever assembled. Some of the mem-

bers were able to hold five pounds Troy of gold, from one of the ship wrecks. (Approximate value around $500,000.) Just in case you are wondering, yes, there is security and you are constantly being monitored. The members had time to visit the McKee Botanical Gardens, which are located in Vero Beach. It is such a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. The children’s section is outstanding with many wooden walkways to send children on their own adventure. There is an old movie they play constantly, which takes you back to the 1930’s era, which shows you how the Gardens were then. Here is some history on the Gardens: McKee Jungle Gardens was the vision of land developers Arthur McKee and Waldo Sexton, who purchased the 80-acre tropical hammock in 1922 with the intention of cultivating citrus. The property’s natural beauty was deemed too special in its native state to disturb so McKee and Sexton identified a new purpose for the land. The two land developers employed landscape architect William Lyman Phillips, from the esteemed firm of Frederick Law Olmsted, to design the basic infrastructure of streams, ponds and trails while they focused their efforts on assembling one of the most outstanding collections of water lilies and

orchids – augmenting native vegetation with ornamental plants and exotic specimens from around the world. By the 1940’s, more than 100,000 tourists were visiting the Gardens each year, deeming it one of Florida’s earliest and most popular natural attractions. As central Florida developed in the 1970s, attendance at the Gardens waned and the family-owned establishment was unable to compete with the lure of far bigger tourist attractions in central and south Florida. McKee Jungle Gardens closed in 1976 and was sold to condominium developers. All but 18 acres were developed. These 18 acres, once the heart of McKee Jungle Gardens, lay dormant for 20 years. A group of community visionaries understood the importance of preserving these 18 acres and in 1994, with the help of The Trust for Public Land, launched a fund-raising campaign to buy the land from the developer who was finalizing plans for a shopping center. With bare hands, basic tools and unimaginable heart, volunteers of every age cleared the trails to reveal once again the jungle’s treasures. This community effort touched so many that even a young girl gave her weekly allowance to help rescue the Gardens. November 18, 2001 marked the formal dedication of the

saved, restored and newly named McKee Botanical Garden. The group had scheduled a boat tour of Sebastian Inlet on the Captain Hiram’s River King Cruise, but it had to be canceled due to winds, however we had reservations at the Blackfin Restaurant, next door to Captain Hiram’s River Cruise, so we proceeded to The Blackfin Restaurant. They had great food with great service, also a view of the River and a Tiki Bar, so it turned out to be a great day. We returned to the Vero Beach Kamp in the evening for Trivia Night and nickel bingo in the club house. On our last day, Vero Beach Kamp cooked an enormous breakfast for us for only $12 each. They had three kinds of omelets, pancakes, waffles, crepes, homemade strawberry and apple toppings, bacon, sausage, fruit platter, olive platter, mimosas, V8 juice, cranberry juice, coffee, etc. Even the owner drove over to meet us and present the TGO Ambassadors with a big basket full of fruit and candy for staying at the Vero Beach Kamp. Their friendliness reminded us of how the campgrounds used to be. It made you feel special. Thanks to Darlene and her crew for serving us, checking us in, parking all of us, along with welcoming us into your home. It was a job well done. Gary & Teri Henry, Hosts

What’s In A Number? Life or Death!

By Ed Brown

The specific number in this case would be the house number of your residence. What is in or at that number? The answer, of course is your home and its contents. Your vehicle(s), your life! Fire Department responders will be looking for black smoke from a house fire that has “vented” through the roof, but what about a home fire at a less dramatic stage, restricted to the sofa or kitchen, or storage shed. Suppose the response is for EMS or Police! They are all responding with your house number as an absolute guide for a timely arrival. Is your house number still attached to your home, or did the numbers blow away in the high winds of last July and August? Is the number that was painted on the driveway dirty, discolored and unreadable? A survey conducted in November of this year checked home numbering on Plantation Drive. The results were, sadly, about the same as the survey taken last year - 32 properties were found to have numbers that were: Missing, Incorrect, Faded, Dirty or otherwise not visible! Come on TGO owners, residents and YES, RENTERS! None of us gets a pass on your OCCUPANCY STATUS in TGO. FIRE certainly does not care! Some of our CONDO ASSOCIATIONS should look into this problem. Park Manager, Billy Specht, suggested that the CSA Office “will dispatch our crew to repaint address numbers on driveways. Simply call us for a work order. Please know that we only use white paint, so if your driveway is treated, or you would prefer another color or design, then please seek other options.” “We are also happy to lend residents our number stencils if you wish to repaint the numbers yourself.” House numbers can be purchased at Home Depot for $3 each. I have stock in Home Depot, but I don’t care where you buy them. Make sure you apply these numbers in a location visible from the roadway, traveling either direction, or paint them on the front of your home. Keep plant cover trimmed back so that house numbers remain visible. “Delayed Response” of Emergency Services is frustrating to responders and devastating to homeowners, particularly when CPR is delayed or a life is lost for lack of a clear address number. CHECK YOUR HOUSE NUMBERS!

Our next Firewise meeting will be on Wednesday,December 6 at 1:00 in the Pavillion. We would love to see you there! Be Firewise TGO... Be Safe!

Funny Thing Is… Bowling Is Right Up My Alley

I finally found a sport that is right up my alley. Bowling. Yes, my whole life I’ve been into athletics. I do love to play sports. I’ve enjoyed playing baseball, football, golf, tennis, ping pong, etc., but never really found a sport I LOVE until now. Why bowling and not golf? Well, I’ve never lost a ball in bowling. In fact, you throw it down an alley and they keep sending it back. You throw anything else down an alley and you’ll never see it again and you wouldn’t want to go to find it. On the golf course you have to be dead silent when someone is shooting. In bowling it’s so loud you can hear a pin drop. Huh? Well, what did you think all that noise was? In NASCAR when you hear the crash it’s very upsetting. In bowling after a crash everyone screams for joy. Well, what about baseball? In baseball if you strike out, they send you to the bench. In bowling if you strike out, they send you to the Hall of Fame. And how many sports are held in an environmentally controlled atmosphere with a full bar in sight and they encourage you to drink while playing the sport? Think about it. While you’re bowling, if you’re not drinking enough alcohol, they send a server to you. You don’t even have to go stand in line at the bar! Now, how many sports do they actually deliver the drinks to you while you’re playing? Ok, golf maybe, but let me ask you this, how many sports do they encourage you to drink and consume a cheeseburger or pizza while you play? And, how many sports do you see the boys playing with the girls and they don’t mind striking out with each other? Yeah, they never want to split and they have plenty of time to spare! Man, if I could have dreamt up the perfect sport, this would be it. So, if you can spare the time, split from your boredom, avoid the gutter of despair and roll on down to your local lanes where you just might find a turkey with your name on it. - Dr. Sammy Tennis - Continued from page 34
