MANAGER’S CORNER

Dear TGO Residents,

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Everyone! I always appreciate how TGO celebrates this special season in style, with beautifully decorated homes and streets, and spirit-filled events. The arrival of this cooler weather has helped put us Floridians into the holiday spirit. Inside this issue you will find some beautiful photos of the Golf Cart Parade (p34) and the Twin Lakes De-Lites (p24).

Friday, January 3rd is our official TGO Golf Course Opening Day! We are putting the finishing touches on our course now. In my last Manager’s Corner article, I shared that we plan to host some soft-opening activities for our owners. This is our way to say Thank You for funding this project and dealing with the construction. Weather permitting, in the days leading up to January 3rd, we will host three different activities. First, we will offer some guided golf cart tours of the course for our owners. This tour is designed for owners who are not golfers, but want to see the improvements we’ve made on our course. Second, we will host an inaugural round of golf featuring several of our community leaders, including Chuck and Shane, and our golf course architect. Owners will be invited to follow-along as this round will be narrated to highlight the unique changes to our course. Third and finally, we will “softopen” our course exclusively for our owners, who will be invited to make tee-times to play before the official opening date. Please stay tuned for announced dates to follow these activities above (see page 11).

The golf shop is hosting their annual holiday sale today, Friday, December 13th, from 3pm7pm. Today you will find great deals on almost everything in the shop, including logo golf attire and accessories. You can try your hand at Blackjack for even more discounts! You’ll find free gift wrapping and gift boxes available on this day. This is the perfect day to buy gifts for your loved ones, and a great opportunity to register for your 2025 golf membership.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a self-defense class for women here at TGO called R.E.A.D.Y. (Respond Early and Defend Yourself!). The R.E.A.D.Y. program is a hands-on self-defense class that teaches women open hand defensive techniques that can be used should they ever find themselves in a violent situation. Techniques include stances, strikes, and situational awareness. This class is limited to 25 participants and will be held on Tuesday, January 21st from 9am-2pm. The class requires participants to sign a waiver. Carmella Galley, our Recreation Manager, will be taking the RSVPs for this program and she can be reached at manor@tgocsa.org or call The Manor at 321-264-2393.

It’s the holiday season, and the CSA office has placed a box out for the 2024 Employee Holiday Fund. 100% of these funds go to the full-time, front-line CSA staff, including our maintenance teams and lawn crews. The people who benefit from your kind contributions are the people you see working in the field each day to make this community a great place to live. Your contribution will honor their hard work in 2024 and we are taking contributions through Dec 31.

On behalf of all of us at the CSA, we wish you all a blessed, healthy and happy holiday season.

Thank you!

FROM THE EDITOR

Happy Holidays!

First, in keeping with the cover theme here’s a photo of me doing my best in last year’s Run Santa Run 1 Mile race in Viera. Yup, racing a mile in a Santa suit! :-)

This past week I had the pleasure of attending (and taking lots of photos of) two special holiday events at The Great Outdoors: the Golf Cart Parade (p34-35) and Twin Lakes’ De-Lites (p2425). Those are two delightful, creative, and fun events and I’m happy I had an opportunity to be there. The printed version of The Happenings has several photos with more online. I tried to capture the spirit of both events and I hope you enjoy them. Speaking of events, there is a lot of fun ahead and I know you don’t want to miss anything. So, don’t forget to check the special event notices on pages 52, 53, & 54.

Finally, I wish all the residents of The Great Outdoors, and the team at CSA, a peaceful, happy holiday season. The next issue is 12/27 and we’ll be looking towards the new year.

Comments, ideas, suggestions, and submissions are always welcome. Please be in touch with me here: email: happenings@tgocsa.com phone: 401-286-9228

Golf Carts in TGO: Slow Down & Make Those Stops

As you all know there are many golf carts here in TGO and they are always zipping around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, serious golf cart injuries are on the rise to the tune of approximately 13,000 per year requiring emergency room visits. Luckily, here in TGO, we haven’t had many serious mishaps and we hope this good record continues. Please don’t be a statistic; stop at stop signs, control your speed, and do not turn corners at high speeds.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES

Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

CSA Trouble Calls: 321-268-9767

If you have questions about lawn spraying, getting sprinklers adjusted, or any other services provided by the Community Services Association, residents should contact the CSA Office by email at service@tgocsa.org or call 321-268-9767 to mention your concerns.

Guest speakers from CSA, ARC, Courtesy Patrol, Nature, Golf, Activities and Firewise will share important information. You might win a door prize!

Please call/text Nancy Wagner at 607-542-6374 to reserve your spot so there will be enough seating and handouts for everyone.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:

• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.

The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

WILDFIRE MITIGATION IN TGO BRING ON THE GOATS!

Fire mitigation is a set of actions that are taken to reduce the risk and impact of fires on a community, a forest, farmland or a home.

Some examples of mitigation include:

Home Hardening: Protecting homes against embers and limiting combustible materials near the home.

Creating defensible space: Removing fallen leaves, twigs and branches and mowing grassto a maximum height of 4 inches.

Landscaping in the extended zone, 30 feet from the home, to discourage creeping grass fires

Spacing: Creating horizontal and vertical space between trees shrubs and grass.

Fuel Storage: Keep fuel sources like gasoline and firewood away from the home.

GOATS!!?

Across wildfire-plagued California, “officials are increasingly deploying a secret weapon: lots and lots of goats.” In Placer County,

which stretches from Lake Tahoe to the outskirts of Sacramento, there were 17 goat-grazing operations scheduled on county land for the past summer. Hungry herds were being unleashed by the thousands. Each operation involves around 2,000 hungry goats, including babies, who are allowed to roam and feed for a couple of weeks in each area.

The NFPA claims “The popularity of the goats for fire officials is twofold: they work for cheap and they’ve also proven effective at clearing even dense vegetation in hard-to-reach areas.” The idea is to reduce the FUEL LOAD (Remember the Fire Triangle).

The NFPA ( National Fire Protection Association) does great work! It is not a source of humor. I will do further research to confirm Wildfire Mitigation Using Goats for a future Happenings Article. In the meantime we will stay with our Trail Maintenance and Firebreak Development volunteers as OUR “secret weapon” in the battle against wildfires. Thanks again to our stalwart volunteers!

The world’s oldest dog lived to 29.5 years old.

While the median age a dog reaches tends to be about 10-15 years, one Australian cattle dog, ‘Bluey’, survived to the ripe old age of 29.5.

The Sun makes a sound but we can’t hear it.

In the form of pressure waves, the Sun does make a sound. The wavelength of the pressure waves from the Sun is measured in hundreds of miles, however, meaning they are far beyond the range of human hearing.

Mount Everest isn’t the tallest mountain on Earth.

Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa in Hawaii, the twin volcanoes, are taller than Mount Everest due to 4.2km of their heights being submerged underwater. The twin volcanoes measure a staggering 10.2km in total, compared to Everest’s paltry 4.6km.

Our solar system has a wall.

The heliopause – the region of space in which solar wind isn’t hot enough to push back the wind of particles coming from distant stars – is often considered the “boundary wall” of the Solar System and interstellar space.

We Need Your Food & Clothing Donations

Bill and Lynda Shaw are residents here in TGO and they have tirelessly invested their time to help the less fortunate. Both Bill and Lynda work closely with the TGO Church and are always on the lookout for donations of food and clothing to support their program of helping the needy. They have built a solid network of charitable organizations in Titusville, who make sure your donations are distributed to the people for whom they were intended.

“If it’s wearable, edible or usable... we’ll take it.”

lf you’ve been looking for a reason to clean out your closets or storage areas, now is a good time. With a simple phone call, Bill and Lynda will be at your door to pick up the donated goods.

Please give Bill and Lynda Shaw a call at 215-450-5900. Your donation will definitely make someone’s day - and you’ll feel great about helping out.

Amazing iPhone Camera Tricks You Need to Know 8

QUESTION: Do you know what is the BEST camera to take photos on?

ANSWER: The one you have with you!

And if you have your iPhone in hand, the built-in camera isn’t just a point-and-shoot device; it’s a treasure trove of hidden tricks that can elevate every picture you take on it!

HERE ARE 8 INCREDIBLE TIPS TO HELP YOU SNAP LIKE A PRO:

1.) “What the heck is that fuzzy blob?”

If you’ve noticed some of your pictures are out of focus, here’s an easy step before taking the photo… Lightly tap the screen over your subject to bring it into focus then tap the white shutter button to capture. Even if your eyes can’t see the improvement, trust me, when you see the final photo, you’ll be amazed at the improved clarity.

2.) “The subject is too dark!”

Tap the subject once, and you’ll notice a box frame with a sun icon to the right. Hold and drag your finger up to lighten or down to darken the subject. This is called exposure, get to know it.

3.) “My [insert one] toddler, chihuahua, wildebeest is too hyper…”

Open the camera app and check the options for ‘burst’ mode on the bottom. Hold down the white shutter button to capture rapid-fire shots—one of the pics is sure to show the perfectly timed action of your out-of-control subject. (On newer iPhones, hold and drag white button to the left while panning your subject)

4.) “What a beautiful fountain!”

Turn on Live Photos, frame the fountain, EXHALE and hold your breath and the camera VERY STEADY as you tap the shutter, now breathe, swipe up on the photo to create Loop, Bounce, or Long Exposure effects.

5.) “Oooo, look at that moon”

To capture more of the glorious night sky, turn on the iPhone’s Night Mode when you are shooting in low-light conditions. Just remember to EXHALE and hold, then tap the shutter and you’ll avoid the dreaded ‘jitter’ shots.

6.) “You could be a model!

Blur the background like a pro with ‘PORTRAIT’ Mode. The soft focus behind the subject makes you the next Andy Warhol. Bonus tip: To amp up your pro look, before you shoot, tap the 2nd box to the right in the arc above the shutter button to add Studio Light effect lighting.

7.) “Why is that lake crooked?”

Best feature prize goes to the new Horizon Guide line! When you align the camera straight across, the broken yellow line become whole. That is the moment you click the shutter for a flawless landscape that doesn’t look tilted.

8.) “Wait, what??”

Switch to Panorama mode and take horizontal or vertical panoramas. Yes, that’s a thing. You can even blow the minds of your friends by appearing TWICE in a panorama. See how-to video at link below!
