MANAGER’S CORNER

December 27, 2024

Dear TGO Residents, This is my last Manager’s Corner of 2024, so allow me to wish all of you a Happy Healthy 2025! Santa came early to TGO, and we “soft-opened” our golf course for TGO owners just before Christmas. Perhaps you were one of the over 300 owners last week who took a golf cart tour around the course to see the improvements first-hand. Our Board of Directors cut the ribbon on Friday December 20th, and our Superintendent Shane Willey struck the inaugural first ball. We officially open our course to the public on Friday, January 3rd. Several owners contacted me because they were unable to take a tour last week and asked if there will be future dates. YES, please stand by for future opportunities to let our non-golfing owners see the improvements and investment in our community. I will take advantage of this exciting time to share some details about our course improvements, and explain what these improvements mean to TGO and our owners beyond just improved golf: 1. We replaced a 35-year-old irrigation system with a new state-of-the-art system, featuring miles of high-quality pipe and 742 new high-tech sprinkler heads that are individually controlled by a computer and a weather station. This system uses data on temperature, rainfall, humidity, solar radiation and wind speed to determine how much water to put on the course. It also allows our golf superintendent and his team to control the individual sprinkler heads using only their cell phones. This system will result in major improvements to water quality, usage and conservation. 2. We rebuilt, reshaped, and re-grassed our greens, tees and several fairways. These changes expanded and modernized our course, making it more interesting and challenging to golfers. Reshaping the golf course was completed with the intention of improving drainage and preventing run-off of water, keeping fertilizer and other tuft treatments from spilling into our lakes and stormwater ways. This makes our treatments more successful, reducing chemical usage and helping our environment. 3. Several improvements were also made to our existing cart paths, rough areas and conservation land surrounding the golf course. Here are some specific examples of these improvements: • We removed many overgrown areas of invasive Brazilian pepper and planted some Florida friendly, drought resistant grasses and plants. Including some wildflowers to attract butterflies. The removal of large areas of pepper will improve airflow and help keep our turf healthy. • We removed several areas that were previously turf and added large areas of coquina shell material to reduce the amount of grass that needs spray treatments and mowing. • We removed some of the concrete cart paths and replaced them with coquina shell material which is softer and more permeable. This renovation makes us eligible to apply for certification through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for golf. Earning this certification will be a prestigious recognition for a community, and it will be our goal in 2025 to begin the steps necessary to earn this award. Any thriving, growing community should have a top-notch golf course. At a time when many golf courses in North Brevard have closed, and others are threatening closure, we were able to invest $4.3 million dollars into our 35-year-old course to ensure that North Brevard has a top-notch golf course for many years into the future. This community improvement ensures that your TGO home will maintain and grow its property value, which is perhaps the most direct benefit for all to our owners. Thank you! Sincerely,

FROM THE EDITOR Happy New Year! Well, that was fast! So, here we are at the end of another year, looking ahead to the next one. A lot has happened in my life this year, both challenging and exciting. All in all it’s been a good year for me and I’m grateful for that. One of the most significant developments for me in 2024 has been taking over the design and production of The Happenings. That one change has brought new challenges and a whole new group of people into my life (and growing! ). Plus, it’s been a lot of fun! I hope that this year has been good for you, too. Here’s to 2025! Greg Wostrel Editor of The Happenings Comments, ideas, suggestions, and submissions are always welcome. Golf Carts in TGO: Slow Down & Make Those Stops As you all know there are many golf carts here in TGO and they are always zipping around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, serious golf cart injuries are on the rise to the tune of approximately 13,000 per year requiring emergency room visits. Luckily, here in TGO, we haven’t had many serious mishaps and we hope this good record continues. Please don’t be a statistic; stop at stop signs, control your speed, and do not turn corners at high speeds.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings. 1. Blue Heron - Outside Ramp 2. CSA Office - Outside 3. Fitness Center 4. Hidden Lakes Clubhouse 5. Library Kitchen 6. Oak Cove Pool Bathhouse 7. Plantation Manor 8. Windsong Bathhouse

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules: • Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up. • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. Please do not allow pets to • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park. urinate on trash or debris. • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. The crew has to pick this up! • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby: • It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator. • Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes. • Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline. • Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes. • While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources. • Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve. NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

BURNING EMBERS ARE A MAJOR WILDFIRE THREAT - By Ed Brown

Earlier this week a Wildland, Fire burst into a Malibu, Ca. backyard and torched the garage of a famous actor: Dick Van Dyke. Dick had a plan; so did the wildfire. Dick had to lay out his inch and a half hose line, start the pump, open the valve from the pool, charge the hose line and direct the hose stream at the growing garage fire. DIck fell, got entangled in the hose and couldn’t get up. Did I Mention that Dick is 99 years old? Three neighbors got Dick up and out of the entangling hose. And then Malibu Fire Department arrived and, thankfully, put out the “CROWN FIRE” in the tree tops that was dumping burning embers on Dick’s back yard and garage. I have been in a cloud of burning embers here in TGO. It was not fun! It is important to have emergency plans, but, just as important is the responsibility to review those plans regularly and revise them as necessary. In order to protect your home and property, there are some important tasks that you need to attend to BEFORE a Wildfire moves in. • Be sure that. BURNING EMBERS (wood, leaves, pine cones and other roof trash blown by a wildfire wind) do not have a resting place on your roof or an entry into your home.! • Make sure that attic screens are in place, as well as any screening over entry at ground level. The concern here is Burning Embers gaining entry to your home, even through an open window. Beware of Burning Embers sneaking under

porches and decks. Box in those spaces with that attic screening or wooden battens. •

Remove combustible materials: Lawn furniture, doormats, garden accessories and tarps, etc., from outside the house.

• Eliminate wood piles. • Close attic windows, pet doors, vents, any doors or windows. • Remove flammable drapes from windows; close shutters and blinds. • Connect garden hoses and fill containers with water, inside and outside. • Wet vegetation down within 30 feet of your home. • Leave doors and windows unlocked; disconnect garage door opener for fire fighter access. • Shut off natural gas, propane or fuel oil supplies at the source. • Evacuate early with valuable papers and cash and your medications. • Evacuate immediately when told to do so. • Follow directions and guidance from Park Security, Firewise volunteers, Police and Fire Department Personnel. Our next Evacuation Drill will be in January. There will be a notice. Be Firewise, Be Safe!

Employee Breakfast 12/20

Chairman Cliff Creech and our CSA Board of Directors served a wonderful Christmas breakfast to our employees on Friday, December 20th. This breakfast is one special way to thank the CSA staff for their hard work, and wish the entire team a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. The Manor was beautifully decorated by Carolyn Banke, Margarete Shaw, and Carmella Galley. Each employee was given a gift to take home to their families. Drew Proulx and Carmella Galley raffled off many fun items, including a handstitched quilt created by Marie Creech, to many lucky employees After breakfast, CSA Manager Billy Specht recognized many employees for their years of service at TGO, and awarded John Smith, Assistant Superintendent of our Golf Course, as Employee of the Quarter. It was a wonderful morning of good food, great cheer, and celebration of our 2024 accomplishments, our teamwork and the excellent service we provided this year to our homeowners.

ROCKY SIGHTING!

Have you seen Rocky the Snake recently? He’s grown tremendously!! Watch for him, as he’s so large he might slither to the other side of the driveway!! The Nature Center Christmas tree will again be at the driveway entrance, where community members can add their decorations. The tree should be up on December 1. This year, however, we have a new, fun addition to the decorations. Did You Know... The Nature Center has a large selection of DVD’s and books that you may borrow? Everything is sorted by categories so you can easily find the ones that interest you. And the CHILDREN’S section has a great assortment to keep your young holiday visitors busy.

NATURE CENTER MEMBERSHIP

The Nature Center dues are just $15 a year. A Lifetime Membership is also available for $500. That membership includes all relatives living in the same household. Contact the Membership Chair, Sally Fisher, to renew or join. Sally can be reached at naturecentermembership@gmail.com. Membership Applications are also available in The Nature Center Library. THE HAPPENINGS

GET INVOLVED IN YOUR COMMUNITY – VOLUNTEER TODAY!** The Nature Center is an integral part of the TGO community, and it relies 100% on our volunteer staff. Without them (“you”), things don’t get done. Please consider donating a couple of hours of your time a month to help. HELP THE NATURE CENTER MAKE MONEY

Sandy Juba needs help selling furniture and high-end items. We need that special person to organize/accept donated items at our storage unit, write up an ad, post it on websites/facebook, then just sell it! Get together with some friends and make it happen! Call the best trainer around, Sandy, for details at 321-543-0502.

HELP THE NATURE CENTER STAY LOOKING GOOD

Ron Peeples is looking for groundskeeping help in three areas: weeding around the building, gathering downed palm fronds, and cleaning off outside decks/picnic tables. It takes minimal time once or twice a month on your schedule. Sign-up is a month at a time. Bring your friends and make it a team effort! Ron can give pointers. Give him a call at 407-509-0486 or email him at ebnflo2001@yahoo.com.

HELP TGO KNOW WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE NATURE CENTER

Do you enjoy learning about what’s upcoming in our community? You can help spread the word about Nature Center activities by placing it in The Happenings, on Facebook and on the NC website. Coordinate the information from readily available resources within the Nature Center and post it to these three communications every two weeks. Sound like fun? To find out more details, email Pat Dick at patdick@gmail.com or Donna Pittman at pittster@verizon.net.

HELP KEEP THE NATURE CENTER SECURE

The Nature Center depends on a team to help keep our building secure. We’ve been fortunate to have a coordinator working with our team members who perform the task, but now it’s time to say goodbye. Huge thank you, Cinamon Nedvin, for doing this! It’s not time-consuming and is an important job of maintaining a list and scheduling our volunteers. Please consider offering a bit of your time. For details contact Pat Dick at patdick@gmail.com.

SPEAKING OF VOLUNTEERS…

We have many to thank for making the holidays bright for the Nature Center. Here are just a few highlights.

NATURE CENTER CHRISTMAS TREE

Many thanks to Carolyn Coates-Medendorp and her creative students for the lovely and natural decorations added to the Christmas Tree! Be sure to check out the festive tree at the entrance to the Nature Center driveway.

The tree was donated by Home Depot store manager Ciara Affron. Bet she’d love to receive a quick thank you from all who appreciate this festive addition to our entrance: ciara_k_ affron@homedepot.com

CHRISTMAS GOLF CART PARADE

A huge thank you to Tracy Yinger and her team of elves who decorated the Nature Center’s golf cart. It looked wonderfully nature-filled, and we appreciate all the help to decorate it plus assistance in dismantling and storing the decorations.

THE CHRISTMAS IN NOVEMBER FLEA MARKET

Our popular annual November flea market was put together and staffed by Jane Virgin and her team who worked very hard to raise $1,560 for the Nature Center.

Here’s the January 2025 lineup: • January 22 @ 7PM – Alligators by Frank Robb, the Manor • January 29 @ 7PM - Early Natives by Elaine Williams, the Manor

OUT OF CURIOSITY… WHAT ARE OWL PELLETS?

You might find this yucky. Owl pellets aren’t poop or puke. They are in a category all their own as expelled matter. Owls evolved to swallow their prey whole, but they can’t digest fur, feathers or bones. Their bodies compact this undigested matter into “pellet” form, and they expel it, usually once a day. You can even buy owl pellets online! Google it and make your purchase (yuck).

New Course Inaugural Round!

Golf Returns to TGO!

Friday, December 20th was a beautiful and special day for our golf course. Owners were invited to witness a celebratory ribbon cutting by our Board of Directors, followed by an inaugural round of golf that was played, in a scramble format, featuring two groups. Golf Superintendent Shane Wiley was invited to hit the ceremonial first drive to officially kick off the return to golf play at TGO after 9 months of renovation. The first group to play consisted of our CSA Board Leadership, Chairman Cliff Creech, Vice Chairman Lauren Clark, Treasurer Matt Willey, and Board Member Colleen Marigliano. The 2nd foursome consisted of Golf Pro Chuck Kandt, Golf Superintendent Shane Wiley, CSA Manager Billy Specht, and golf course architect David Ferris. Owners were invited to follow along as the round was narrated to highlight the unique changes to our course. After the completion of the 18-hole scramble, a reception was held in the Blue Heron, The Heron’s Nest.

WI-FI & INTERNET^ MADE SIMPLE! For many of us, the words “Wi-Fi” and “Internet” might sound like tech mumbo jumbo, but fear not! You don’t need to be a computer whiz to understand the basics of staying connected to family, friends, neighbors and services from your own home. Here’s a short guide to help you navigate Spectrum’s services, especially since it’s part of our community bulk package included in your monthly CSA dues.

What’s Included?

Our community has a bulk contract with Spectrum that covers both your home Wi-Fi and Internet service. In plain English: • Internet: This is the connection that brings the online world (email, websites, videos, etc.) to your home. • Wi-Fi: This is what makes your devices (like your computer, phone, or tablet) connect to the Internet wirelessly within your house. (Did you know? “Wi‑Fi” doesn’t actually stand for anything. The name was coined as a catchier alternative to this technical mouthful: “IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence.”) The good news? You’re already paying for both through your CSA dues— so you can relax knowing it’s taken care of.

Modem vs. Router: What’s the Difference?

You might hear the terms modem and router thrown around, but what do they actually do? • Modem: This is the box that connects your home to the Internet. It communicates directly with Spectrum’s service to bring the Internet into your house. • Router: This is the box that takes the Internet signal from the modem and sends it wirelessly to your devices (like phones, computers, or smart TVs). If you think of the modem as the water pipe bringing water to your house, the router is like the sprinkler spreading it around your yard. (Sometimes, Spectrum provides a combination modem/router, which does both jobs in one box.)

How to Access Your Wi-Fi

When Spectrum set up your service, they gave you a Wi-Fi Network Name (also called an SSID) and a Password. You need these two things to connect your devices to the Internet. 1.) FIND THE INFO on back of router. You need to find 2 things: Network name and password. Network Name; (Usually starts with MySpectrumWifi or SpectrumSetup). Password; Always in lower case - consists of 2 words run together plus 3 numbers. WRITE THEM DOWN IN A SECURE PW BOOK! You’ll need these EVERY time you sign into home wifi with a new device

52

THE HAPPENINGS

2.) TO SIGN INTO WIFI: On your phone, tablet or computer, open Settings > WiFi *Select the correct network name from the list. It should be near the top, but remember TGO has dozens of networks all around you. *Enter the password you wrote down above. TIP: If you don’t know or can’t find your Wi-Fi name and password, call Spectrum Support (their number is usually on your bill) or ask a tech-savvy neighbor. It’s an easy fix!

Tips for a Stronger Wi-Fi Signal

Sometimes your Wi-Fi might feel slow or unreliable. Here are a few tricks to improve your connection: Location, Location, Location: The router is the box that sends Wi-Fi signal to your devices. Place your Spectrum router in a central spot in your house, not tucked away in a cabinet or closet. Avoid Interference: Keep your router away from walls, metal objects, or appliances like microwaves. Reboot It!: If your Internet is acting up, unplug your router FROM THE BACK OF THE UNIT for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. It’s like giving it a quick nap—and it often works wonders. Too Many Devices?: If you’ve got lots of devices connected (phones, laptops, TVs), your Wi-Fi might slow down. Disconnect devices from the signal (Settings > Wifi > Forget this Network) you aren’t using.

When to Call Spectrum

If the problem just started with a password issue, you can call me at 321-243-4324. Since I live in TGO, I’m close but can’t guarantee that I would be instantly available. IF I can fix it in 5 minutes, there is no charge. Larry Marola is also a good choice for TV, wifi and network issues, especially for Android or PC users. His number is 404-731-2900. If all else fails and your Internet still isn’t cooperating, don’t pull your hair out—call Spectrum! Their technicians can troubleshoot or even send someone out to help. They can also send a remote signal to your device like the TV box to check if it’s got a problem or let you know if there’s an outage in our area. Spectrum Support Number: (Bulk Contract # for TGO only) 1 (833) 697-7328

Final Thoughts

Your Wi-Fi and Internet are important tools to keep you connected with friends, family, and the rest of the world. If you need a little help getting set up or understanding it all, don’t be shy—reach out! After all, staying connected is easier (and more fun) when we help each other out. by Kris Lee-Scott

Funny Thing Is… Twas the Night Before. Twas the Night Before New Years And all through Time Square All the creatures were stirring And you should see some of their hair. The aliens have landed Or so it may seem Because humans don’t have hair Colored yellow, purple and green. Of course it is freezing But they give that no care Because alcohol is in their veins Where blood used to be there. A couple of hours ago They were all in their cars Beeping and cussing As they raced to the bars. Now they’re gathering together As if they were friends Oh how a few shots of whiskey Can make such amends. As the midnight hour approaches And anticipation starts to rise The excitement overtakes them

And they look to the skies. Are they looking for spaceships And for what are their cheers Is it the 2nd coming Nope, it’s a giant ball with the next year.

And the right and the back Like sardines in a can Well oiled and jam packed.

As the ball slowly drops Toward the crowd below The screaming gets even louder And the hysteria starts to grow.

Just mere minutes ago They loved each other so much Now if they get in the way They might get a punch.

And finally the ball reaches The end of its trip Exactly at the stroke of midnight And the crowd loses its grip.

And what will become Of these revelers the next day After fighting the crowds Who were all in their way.

They are seen hugging and kissing All these new found friends Wishing each other Happy New Year But the love will soon end.

Is it hangovers that ail them Well for some that is true But it’s not all from drinking Because some had the flu.

Because just minutes later They will try to go home But so will 4 million others Oh no they’re not alone.

Since you watched on TV You can be of good cheer Because you’re unscathed and healthy To start a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

There’s people to the left

Start the new year on Florida's stunning Space Coast with this beautiful 3-bedroom, 3-bath home in the highly desirable *The Great Outdoors* community.
