Ladies Golf Association Fall Cup Tournament

This year’s Fall Classic was a hoot, especially if you were on the “Grip It and Sip It” team. 32 women, with all levels of experience, divided into two teams - 16 ladies each. It was the “Grip It and Sip It” team, wearing apple Green shirts and led by Dawn England, taking on the “Flawless and Fearless” ladies in the Burgundy shirts, captained by Lyn Johndrow. After two days of fierce competition, the ladies in Green took the overall win and the champagne flowed. It was now time for the Burgundy team to serve lunch to the winning team. The Heron’s Nest hosted the luncheon with a fantastic dish of Chicken Piccata served to the Green team by the Burgundy team. Gold medals were presented to the winners along with an exchange of gifts. Our TGO Golf Manager, Chuck Kandt, was in charge of putting on this event and, as always, did a fantastic job. The LGA sends a big Thank You, Chuck. More photos on page 38.

Dear TGO Community, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Everyone! I appreciate how TGO celebrates this special season in style, with beautifully decorated homes and streets, and spirit-filled events. The arrival of this cooler weather helps put us Floridians into the holiday spirit. My family and I look forward to bundling up and attending this year’s Christmas DeLights on Fairways and Twin Lakes. We enjoy the beautiful luminaries and light displays, the Christmas carolers, and the cookies and cider. If you’ve been to the TGO Maintenance Yard recently, I also hope you’ve noticed that the reconfigured collection area for trash, recycling and vegetative debris is now much cleaner and more organized. The overall condition of the maintenance yard has improved recently. Our CSA debris crew now completes a daily cleaning of the area at the end of their shift. There are new signs in place to discourage unauthorized dumping of items on the ground. Everyone is now doing their part to keep this area clean. Even Waste Management is helping by maintaining their weekly schedule of pick-ups without fail this month. Let’s keep it that way! This week our CSA Grounds crew has worked to improve the landscaping beds in our common areas. We are pressure-washing and re-setting the hacienda block borders along the driving range rock beds. We are also putting out fresh mulch ground cover. Our TGO Golf Course maintenance team is making some improvements in the golf driving range area. They are cleaning up the parking lot and creating a shell rock landscape bed in front of the parking area. We are also working to make your four-legged friends happier. CSA Grounds team “overseeded” our Doggie World three weeks ago with rye grass seed, and the grow-in results have greatly improved the turf conditions for the season. Blue Heron completed front-of-house staff training on Monday evenings in November, and now we are opening on Mondays for dinner. This started on Monday, December 4 and will continue this coming Monday, December 11. There is one exception to our Monday openings. On Monday, December 18, Blue Heron will be closed for the entire day while we install a new point of sale program called TOAST. This new system will help improve our operations and lower our credit card rates. When we reopen Tuesday, December 19, we will also be offering a revised menu with some great new choices. We will be closed for breakfast only on Friday, December 22, so our Blue Heron staff can attend our quarterly employee breakfast. And, as a holiday reminder, Blue Heron will be closed on Monday, December 25 and Monday, January 1, so the staff can enjoy the holidays with their families. I wish the happiest of holidays to you all. Sincerely,

Billy Specht CSA Manager

REGENERATE YOUR BATTERIES! Now available at Golf Carts Unlimited What is Sulfation?

Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge. Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.

We Now Have the Capability to Reverse the Sulfation Process!

Here is how it works...

• Increase Your Battery Life-Span • Return Lost Capacity to Your Used Batteries • Keep Your Battery Pack(s) in Sulfate-Free Condition • Save Money on Purchasing New Batteries

Schedule a time to bring your cart in. We will hook it up to our Desulfator Machine. We will need your cart for 48 hours. Cost for a desulfination process including a complete diagnostic report - $250

Our Regeneration Process helps break down and dissolve the lead sulfate crystals, restoring the battery's performance. We will provide you with a detailed health report for each individual battery, including your battery pack’s performance both before and after the regeneration process. This process will extend the life of your batteries for multiple years, especially if you establish a yearly maintenance program. All work is done on premises at Golf Carts Unlimited. Call to make an appointment...

Bring your cart to us and we'll provide a ride back to your home - and drop your cart off when complete.

Community Information & Notices Martha Verity 1937-2023

The first Newcomer Orientation Meeting for this season will be held in the Manor on Monday, January 8, 2024 from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm. Guest speakers from CSA, ARC, Courtesy Patrol, Nature, Golf, Activities and Firewise will share important information. Bring your questions. We also have door prizes! Please call Nancy Wagner at 607-542-6374 to reserve your spot so we will have enough seating and handouts for everyone.

Martha Verity of Plantation Drive passed away on July 15, 2023 at home. She was under hospice care. Her husband was at her side, along with four of her children and three grandchildren, all from New York, and her sister from Kansas City, MO. Our first visit to TGO was in 1993, and we have been here ever since. Martha was an avid bridge player at TGO and at the Senior Center. She also taught bridge and was known as Queen of Mean. She hosted three Variety Shows and was involved in many other activities here at TGO over the past thirty years. She was very well known. There will be a military funeral with honors at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery for Martha E. Verity RN 2nd Lt. U.S. Air Force on December 12, 2023 at 11:00 am where her ashes will be laid to rest. She will be greatly missed and was my best friend. - Bill Verity -

Community Information & Notices CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules: • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have. • Tie bags together if they are all light in weight. • Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. Please do not allow pets to • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. urinate on trash or debris. • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park. The crew has to pick this up! • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes. If you come across Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO NOTE: an aggressive alligator,

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby: • It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator. • Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes. • Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline. • Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes. • While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources. • Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

18

please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE!

If you have an issue with an alligator, or any animals within TGO, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073 or Nancy Clark at 321-292-1434. These ladies are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

What do snowmen call their offspring? The answer is somewhere in this issue.

The application dates for 2024 will be available in a future issue of The Happenings. TruGreen is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the TruGreen list. AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. Many Thanks To Our CSA Ground Crews! These CSA ground crew members are just part of our large group of dedicated employees who help make TGO a great place to live. They’re out there mowing our lawns, repairing the irrigation systems, maintaining the bath houses and collecting our daily rubbish. Some are single, some are married and some have families... but they all take their jobs seriously.

As in years previous, you’ll find CSA Holiday Fund donation boxes in the CSA Office and Manor. Here’s your chance to show your support for our great group of employees. Together we can help make their holidays a little brighter. Cash or checks made out to the CSA Holiday Fund. Thank you for your support.

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors

The Nature Center hosted their annual Holiday Flea Market with another great turn out of buyers. Top left, around the clock: Dianna Schecter was one of the cashiers, as were Lucille Coyne and Geri Major. Alyson Nadon-Ortega entertained the shoppers with some holiday music and Debbie Grondin was selling raffle tickets for the ALS walk on February 24.

Our CSA Crew did an incredible job of rearranging the trash area by moving the brush/debris area to the far right and placing the recycleables section to the middle and the garbage/rubbish containers to the far left. So far it has made a big difference in keeping this area much cleaner. Good job CSA and thanks to all the TGO residents for helping to keep it this way. Now if we can just figure out which items are recycleable and which ones aren’t.

Cranberry Christmas Cake

Tart fresh cranberries and sweet buttery cake are perfectly combined in this Christmas dessert! Ingredients 3 eggs 2 cups sugar 3/4 cup butter, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups all-purpose flour 12 oz fresh cranberries

Prep Time: Cook Time: Total Time: Servings:

20 minutes 45 minutes 1 hour hr 5 minutes 16 servings

Instructions • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. • With a mixer, beat the eggs with the sugar until slightly thickened and light in color, about 5-7 minutes. The mixture should almost double in size. The eggs work as your leavening agent in this recipe, so do not skip this step. • This mixture should form a ribbon when you lift the beaters out of the bowl. • Add the butter and vanilla; mix two more minutes. • Stir in the flour until just combined. • Add the cranberries and stir to mix throughout. • Spread in a buttered 9 x 13 pan. • Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until very lightly browned and a toothpick inserted near the center of the cake comes out clean. • Let cool completely before cutting into small slices.

Enjoy!

Fire Control at TGO

By Ed Brown

The sign at the Security Gate proclaims TGO as an NFPA certified “Firewise Community.” In 2010, Fire Chief Don Payne moved in, assessed the wildfire threat, gathered some concerned Fire Instructors and met the National Fire Prevention Association standards to become the first Firewise Community in Brevard County. Now, in 2023 we are helping other wildfire threatened communities meet the same safety standards and become FIREWISE safer in the threat of wildfire destruction. This is accomplished through a program of community education and involvement. But why is all this even necessary? Because we moved here! I don’t regret that move. I love it here, but there is a cost, unknown at closing. I was not aware of the concept: Urban Wildland Development: building in an area that could burn. So, what can you do? MOVE or MITIGATE. I chose to make the problem less. I’m not going anywhere! How long has this been going on? Locally, it has been a problem since the first native inhabitants moved in, stuck a stick in the ground and called it “camp” - about 10,000 years. Recovery after fire was simpler back then for the Indians and the wildlife. Today, you move away and build a safer home, in a safer place and you still mitigate - only smarter. Some of the tools you can use to help mitigate include: 1. Keep your property “Lean, Clean, and Green:” Trim bushes and trees so that they do not make contact with the house. A grass fire would love to climb your home’s exterior and torch the roof. Keep the roof clear of pine needles and other “kindling.” 2. Cut down climbing vines for the same reason. Discourage a ground fire from moving in. 3. Pick up leaves and sticks and any downed palm fronds. 4. Keep all living plants and grass well-watered. 5. Replace wood chip mulch and pine needles with rocks, gravel or rubber mulch. 6. Cutting “Fire Breaks” with help from CSA, St. Johns River and Florida Forestry equipment. 7. Prescribed Burns. With help from St. Johns River Water Management and Florida Forestry. 8. Remove burnable trash from your roof and gutters. 9. Have hoses pre-connected for spot fires. 10. Clean yard trash from under decks. Throughout this process, take breaks, stay hydrated (even if you’re not thirsty) and help CSA personnel with vegetative waste removal. Remember to cut tree limbs and palm fronds to four foot length and place all this “fire food” curbside for pick-up. Be Firewise TGO... Be Safe!

Funny Thing Is… Twas The Week Before Christmas. Twas the Week Before Christmas And all through the mall, No creatures were stirring You see no one at all.

You order your presents And even your tree Because, thanks to Prime membership, All the shipping is free.

Yeah, back in those days The only phones were at home. If you wanted to call someone You’d have to stop at a pay phone.

That’s because in this year Since you’re running out of time, You chose to do your shopping Not at the mall but online.

So you click on your order And away you can go. Nothing can slow you down now You’re in Florida, there’s no snow.

Imagine millennials Trying to live in those days. When, if they wanted to chat, It would be face to face.

There are holiday parties to attend And good cheer to display, And a trip to the mall Could take the whole day.

Ah, past are the days When you jammed in the stores. It was wall to wall people And finding anything was a chore.

Now they can do all their shopping While driving their cars, On the way to their work, Or to restaurants or bars.

Since you’re really too busy To stop and to shop, You just get on your iPad And to Amazon you hop.

And even if you found stuff In a very short time, You’d still be there for hours Standing in checkout lines.

There’re thousands and thousands Of gifts and stores to pick, And to travel to each All it takes is one click.

How many times did you seek out That one perfect gift, Only to get there to find It’s on a backorder list?

FOR SALE Beautiful Park Model

So, now holiday shopping Is quick, neat and clean. But where’s the festive Christmas spirit? Welcome to Christmas 2023 Dr. Sammy
