MANAGER’S CORNER

Dear TGO Community,

I’m happy to report that our golf course renovation project is moving along GREAT. Our construction teams are ahead of schedule and making excellent progress, with no major surprises. Mother nature has been cooperating with warm, dry weather prevailing for the past three weeks. This week our CSA utilities team started installing the residential connections on the course with a goal to restore irrigation to homes in the south section of our community as soon as possible.

If you are away from TGO, please visit our website, TGOCSA.org, where you will find progress photos and video shot by drone, and a wonderful project highlight video showing the groundwork our contractors have made in just three weeks on the job. I extend a special thanks to those who are collecting progress photos and making videos to keep you informed, including Doug Jensen, Rick Conover and Chairman Cliff Creech. Since our course is now completely off limits, I hope the footage and videos are helping you stay connected.

TruGreen returns to our community next week, Tuesday and Wednesday, for our late spring comprehensive spraying of your lawns. This treatment will include fertilizer, herbicide, and a pesticide for lawn destroying insects including a special treatment for chinch bugs. You will get a detailed email from CSA soon concerning what will be sprayed, and how to prepare for the treatment. As always, if you don’t want your yard treated, contact the CSA office.

Our Board of Directors continue to step up our safety efforts with the addition of a new AED in Manor Lobby. I want to thank the Safety Committee and Sawdust Club for their continued work to support our AED program. This new AED makes a total of 8 units deployed in the common areas throughout TGO, and an additional AED is always found in the back of the Courtesy Patrol vehicle while they are on patrol.

Blue Heron is working on some new ways to provide you with good hospitality and food during this slow season. Our servers are routinely walking the Manor pool deck to offer “cabana service” in the afternoons. We will bring food and drinks right out to your lounge chair on the pool deck. We’ve also repaired our Blue Heron deck chairs and now you can sit outside and enjoy this warm weather. Randy, our kitchen manager, has lined up some comfort foods to be offered as weekly specials from Tuesday – Saturdays during the summer. If you’d rather get “Take Out” and eat at home, give us a call (321385-9100) and we’ll meet you for curbside pickup. Please support our restaurant and our Blue Heron employee team during this slow season at TGO.

Finally, this message goes out to everyone who serves as an officer or coordinator of a club or activity here at TGO… please review your club and activity information with Greg Wostrel, our new Happenings Editor (happenings@tgocsa.com), so we can keep the content in The Happenings accurate at all times. It’s also a good idea to check in with Carmella Galley (manor@tgocsa.com), our recreation manager, to make sure that any space or facilities you need for your clubs are properly reserved for next year’s busy season.

It’s certainly warming up here at TGO and starting to feel more like summertime, although not quite officially summer yet. We are now in drought conditions and sure could use some rain, but otherwise it’s been downright beautiful here at TGO. Sincerely,

THE HAPPENINGS 3

What is Sulfation?

Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge.

Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.

We Now Have the Capability to Reverse the Sulfation Process!

• Increase Your Battery Life-Span

• Return Lost Capacity to Your Used Batteries

• Keep Your Battery Pack(s) in Sulfate-Free Condition

Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

Check Your Golf Cart’s Brakes

Brakes that do not function will be your only excuse as to why you did not stop at a stop sign.

Therefore, according to page 54 of our TGO’s Rules and Regulations of the road, you will be receiving a Traffic Citation for failure to obey a posted traffic sign.

Contractor Restrictions

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings.

2. CSA Office - Outside 100-D Plantation Drive

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:

• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.

The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

Owl Release!

On Tuesday April 23rd TGO resident Gary Wittstock noticed that there was a young owl on the ground. He immediately notified Betty Salter who was able to capture it and get it to rehab.

The fledgling owl was a bit under nourished and was unable to fly although it had its flight feathers.

It did not have internal parasites or any other problems. It was then placed in the care of an avian vet for several days.

On Saturday the 26th, Gina Holt of Wild About Birds brought our young owl back to where we found it. Gina did the release.

We hope that this lovely young owl is now thriving somewhere in the TGO area. Thanks to all who assisted!

TGO FIREWISE INFORMATION

DON’T GET BURNED: TREATING BURNS.

As a FD Paramedic for 35 years, I have had some experience with burn treatment.

Let’s start with MINOR BURNS

These are burns that involve minimum skin damage and can be treated on a first aid basis.

1. First cool the burn. Hold the affected area under cool ( not cold) running water for about 10 minutes. If the burn is on the face, apply a cool wet cloth until the pain eases. For a mouth burn, from hot food or drink, suck on an ice cube for a few minutes.

2. Remove rings or other tight items from the burned area. Do this quickly and gently before the area swells.

3. Don’t break blisters. They guard against infection. If a blister does break, gently clean the area with water and apply an antibiotic ointment.

4. Apply lotion, after the burn has cooled, to prevent drying and provide relief.

5. Bandage the burn to keep air off the burned area, reduce pain and protect blistered skin.

6. If needed, take a non-prescription pain reliever, such as Advil, Aleve, Tylenol, etc.

Remember,

MAJOR BURNS require emergency medical help: CALL 911

They involve several layers of skin and may not be as painful as Minor Burns due to destruction of nerve cells but they ar serious. The skin may appear to be dry and leather-like. It may appear charred. Blisters may be larger than 3 inches in diameter

Personal experience has taught me the value of a cool Betadine in water application for the pain! A minor burn may need emergency care if it affects eyes, mouth, hands or genital areas. Babies and older adults may need emergency care for minor burns as well. Electrical burns, including lightning-caused burns and major chemical burns also require medical care.

Protect the burn victim and any care givers from harm, if you can. Remember to be careful to avoid burn injuries and the Post Traumatic Stress which can accompany an injured burn victim and you, as a potential rescuer I just remembered a liquid chlorine tanker overturned, in Miami. The driver was trapped, conscious, beyond help; showered by a river of highly corrosive liquid chlorine and painfully vocal for 15 minutes 21 seconds! That was my first day on the job as a firefighter in Miami! “We did what we could!”

When you think you’re having a bad day, think about that poor guy driving the tanker and also, DON’T GET BURNED!

Palms!

Did you know there are over 2,500 species of palms trees? Surprisingly, these “trees” aren’t trees at all! Palms are woody perennials, closely related to grasses, bromeliads and bananas. Some species grow up to 200 feet, more than an 18-story building! The average lifespan of a palm tree is 70-80 years.

Fun Facts.

The 1953 Florida legislature designated the sabal palm (also called cabbage palm) as the state tree. Why? Probably because it can be

found in almost every county in Florida. It may not be the most glamorous palm tree, but it certainly has its virtues.

The cabbage palm is slow growing but longlived (up to 200 years). It typically grows to 70 or 80 feet with fronds averaging ten feet long and trunk diameter of about 25 inches. Its fronds can fold up, and it can bend in extreme weather (think hurricanes) without breaking. It can even withstand cold temperatures as low as 15˚F. It is drought tolerant but can’t survive salt in its roots.

The sabal/cabbage palm reproduces by sprouting cream-colored flowers at its crown. When fertilized, these flowers become round, black berries, each containing one seed and are edible. Deer, black bears,

Here in Florida, we have 12 native palm “trees”:

raccoons, squirrels, and wild turkey all eat the fruits, which have rich nutrients and are high in calories. Many bird species, including crows, mockingbirds and Florida scrub jays, use the sabal/cabbage palm as a nesting site because they provide a safe and secure environment.

A number of these native palms can be found in The Great Outdoors.

Maintenance (all palms).

Ever wonder if the palm(s) in your yard need special care? Some tips:

1. Fertilize with a slow-release palm fertilizer at least twice/year. Four applications are better.

2. Slow-release pellets are best. Ingredients should contain nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, iron and manganese plus traces of zinc, copper, and boron to prevent deficiencies.

3. Application rate is eight ounces (half pound) per inch of trunk diameter.

4. Water your palms during dry periods by soaking the base with an open hose at least twice a month but don’t overwater.

Diseases.

Palm trees may die for several reasons, primarily disease. Among the most common:

Lethal bronzing (many palm species) - A bacterial infection spread through contaminated water or soil.

The first sign is wilting leaves. The leaves will droop, turn brown and die. There is no cure, and you need to protect nearby palms.

Lethal yellowing (many palm species)Transferred by leafhoppers. Blooms turn black, and immature fruit drops, followed by yellowing of fronds from lower to upper areas, bud rot and subsequent death. There is no cure.

Ganoderma butt rot (all palm species)Spores spread by air. Older fronds droop and brown while new growth slows, becomes yellow/pale green, and younger leaf tips turn brown. Shelf-like conks on the lower trunk confirm disease. There is no cure for Ganoderma butt rot. The palm must be removed and destroyed.

Pruning (all palms).

The best advice is to avoid pruning when possible. Most palms shed their fronds naturally. IMPORTANT: The University of Florida recommends when pruning is necessary, remove only completely dead and/or gray-brown fronds. Hurricane or candle cuts deprive a tree of nutrients and weakens its defenses. Repeated hurricane cuts cause “penciling,” a narrowing below the fronds. Hurricane winds can snap off the top where thinning is. These cuts also rob birds and other critters of a safe nesting area! Removal of green fruit, seeds and blooming stalks does not damage the palm.

Cautions (all palms). Don’t:

• Use nails or screws to attach anything to the trunk.

• Use climbing spikes to climb unless it’s dead.

• Use a machete to remove fronds.

• Use string trimmers around the bottom.

• Place sprinklers close to the trunk.

THE WUESTHOFF MULTI-USE TRAIL

A Space Coast Hidden Gem

The Titusville Multi-Use Trail, also known as the Wuesthoff Trail, is a short and pleasant paved path located in the southern outskirts of the city of Titusville. Protecting an uplands recharge area for drinking water resources, the sand pine scrub stretches more than a half mile east, contiguous to Dicerandra Scrub Sanctuary.

Dicerandra thinicola, a mint species found nowhere else in the world but Titusville, grows in these fine sands. Expect to encounter gopher tortoises, deer, and other wildlife crossing the paved path. The trail runs through Wuesthoff Park and crosses Barna Avenue, where it proceeds into a wooded expanse of undeveloped land. Winding through the shady corridor, the trail comes to an end at Kathy Drive amidst a quiet, residential neighborhood.

The inauspicious start of the trail next to the Fire Station.

Along the way, the well-maintained paved trail follows the contour of the ridge that runs through the pine scrub. Gentle curves lead the visitor over small hills as the trail delivers a surprisingly zen-like experience only a few hundred yards from homes and busy Barna Street. The trail is a favorite for many local runners and walkers and one can encounter several, or none, on any given day, Consistent with many continued on p. 34 >

Dappled light, pine needles, grasses, flowers and overhanging trees grace most of the 1.6 mile trail.

The trail gently winds and rolls through a lovely undeveloped stretch. Much of the trail is pleasantly shaded by the forest canopy and sturdy benches are placed at convenient intervals along the way. The trail is used by walkers, runners, and casual cyclists and which means a glance around an approching curve is recommended.

FROM THE EDITOR

I have to say, producing this issue was a lot of fun. I managed to engage in several of my favorite things while working on it: photographing, hiking, meeting new people, and listening to people’s stories. Finishing one of the features also included reflecting on the lovely area we all live in—and being grateful for it. That one is the latest “Hidden Gems” piece that you can find on page 32, and the photos there are accurate—it is really that pretty.

There are many special spots like that one in the area and you can be certain I will be sharing them with you. This photo of my wife, Georgia, and I was taken a few days ago at one of them: the trails in Fox Lake Park at the Western edge of Titusville.

Thank you to Rudi and Dick for the entertaining morning last weekend (see page 67), to Donna Pittman for the interesting article (and photos!) about palms (see page 28 - don’t forget the quiz), to Tim Clark for photos with captions of the recent work on the course, to name only a few. Of course, any list of “Thank Yous” is bound to leave someone out, so please do not feel slighted if I have done that.

THE HAPPENINGS is very much a team effort. Every issue of The Happenings requires many emails, phone calls, a few meetings, people sharing photos, and contributions from all sorts of people. Not a single issue would be produced without a group of hardworking people committed to the accuracy and success of each issue.

Comments, ideas, suggestions, and submissions are always welcome. Please be in touch with me here: email: happenings@tgocsa.com phone: 401-286-9228

FREE Introductory Stretch Session For TGO Residents

Welcome to the New Age of Stretch!

Thanks to the modern sedentary lifestyle, after 30, most people start losing flexibility at an average rate of 1% a year. Strains and micro-stresses on your muscles compounded over time can glue them together. This “glue,” or scar tissue, tightens the surrounding tissue and restrains how you’re able to move. Over time, the snowballing loss of flexibility ages you. Stretch Zone’s isolation of individual muscles within a muscle group breaks up the glue, unwrapping the stranglehold on your posture and valuable energy. Proper stretching slows down the aging process. You will feel younger by improving posture, circulation, and increasing your range of motion.

For a FREE 30 minute session, please give us a call: Stretch Zone in Titusville: 321- 567 4085

1542 Harrison Street, Titusville, FL 32780

As the summer season is heating up, we expect our pools to become more busy.

One of the ways we try to keep everyone safe and make sure our residents can enjoy their amenities is to be able to identify those that are permitted use of certain facilities. For our Manor Pool and Oak Cove Pool we will be checking the wristbands that CSA provides. Please make sure you have your wristbands with you when are enjoying one of our best amenities here at TGO.

APPLE TIP: iPHONE CURSOR TRICK

Have you ever been frustrated when typing on your iPhone and noticed you made a mistake a few words back? Most people attempt to backspace to the error and try to type the entire sentence (or paragraph) over again. Here is a better way to fix a typing mistake!

If you have an iPhone XR or higher, simply hold (long-press) the space bar for 2 seconds and it becomes a cursor which can slide back or up through the errant text without erasing. When it reaches the right of the mistaken character, just tap the backspace ) to delete, then replace with correct letter.

For older iPhones (6s thru XS Max) use a hardpress of 2 or more keyboard characters to enable the cursor feature.

Once you use this tiny, but mighty trick, you’ll find that it’s an invaluable time saver!

70 THE HAPPENINGS

Funny Thing Is… Diet Begins

with the Word “Die”.
With spring in the air and summer around the corner it’s time to start getting those beach bodies back with diet and exercise.

Now call me a cynic, and many do, but doesn’t the word diet start with the word “die?” Why would you name a program to help you live longer Die-t?

There are a lot of diets out there. Vegetarian diets are very popular now. If it had legs you don’t eat it. The result is often a very skinny body and yellowish skin. Is that what you want to take to Muscle Beach? The Atkins diet tells you to eat lots of meat until your next cholesterol test. The South Beach Diet is very stylish now but the list of foods that you can’t eat is like something a prison would use to torture enemy combatants. No juicy steaks, cheeseburgers, etc.

If I was captured and they walked by me with a sizzling steak I think I would tell them where the landmines were buried. The Scarsdale diet’s founder has died, probably of hunger, so who wants to follow that one. Besides, if you’re going to start your day with nothing more than a sour tasting grapefruit and black coffee who’s going to want to deal with you until lunch?

One of the most popular diets currently is the Paleo diet. Paleo is a shortened version of Paleolithic, or in simpler terms, the Caveman Diet. If they didn’t eat it, neither should you. The premise is to eat all natural earth developed, non processed foods but correct me if I’m wrong, wasn’t the average life span of the caveman about 25 years?

No wonder they call those things Die-ets.

Take it from Dr. Sammy. If you really want to look good at the beach put your clothes back on and drive up in a shiny new Corvette holding a bottle of tequila.#
