MANAGER’S CORNER

Dear TGO Community,

This coming Monday is Memorial Day, when we honor those brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. On behalf of the CSA staff and Board, I wish everyone a Memorial Day filled with reflection and appreciation for our heroes. Please join us on the Blue Heron deck. We will offer a grill-out with burgers, hot-dogs and bratwurst, from 11am-2pm. The CSA office and Recreation office will be closed to observe this holiday.

Mother Nature delivered a big boost to our thirsty yards last week. We received approximately four inches of rain, combined with plenty of heat and sunlight. This recent rain ended a two-month drought. Our yards also received a TruGreen treatment of fertilizer, pesticide and herbicide last week. I inspected our community today with Mike O’Neal, our grounds manager, and we are seeing a surge of growth now. Our lawn crews are shifting into a higher gear to ensure our yards are cut on seven-day mow cycle. We are now officially into the growing season.

Our last regular Board meeting of the season was held Wednesday, May 15th. The meeting highlight came when the Board voted unanimously to honor owner John Roberts by naming the new dock on Lake Judy the “John Roberts Dock”. John and his wife Clariece attended the meeting to accept this honor and see the custom walnut plaque created by our Sawdust Club, which will be installed on the dock soon. John has volunteered at TGO for over 20 years, picking up litter daily along our roadways, planning the fish stockings to keep our fish population healthy, improving the wetlands around Lake Judy by adding native plants, creating feeding grounds for the monarch butterfly, serving as chief pond monitor and writing a semi-annual report on the condition of our lakes. This list of John’s efforts to keep TGO a great place to live goes on and on. I was so pleased to be a part of honoring John, because he has demonstrated to me and everyone else what selfless volunteerism and community service looks like.

Steven Powers has joined our team as our Blue Heron restaurant manager. He started his training on Monday of this week. Steven will be working Tuesdays through Saturdays to lead the delivery of our daily lunch and dinner specials. He is trying to introduce himself to every guest who enters Blue Heron. You may see him running food from the kitchen or working behind the bar to make drinks. He’s an experienced food and beverage professional with a great attitude for customer service. He will support our server team as they expand our services. Blue Heron is now offering afternoon pool cabana services daily, and we’re serving food to Tuesday Bingo participants before the games begin. During this slow time of the year at TGO, we need your support! If you are in residence here, please come in and support our Blue Heron Restaurant. You will see Steve working very hard to provide the consistency and quality food and service our owners deserve.

There are many improvement projects going on now throughout the community. Of course, the golf course renovation project is at the top of our list, and it continues to move forward with good pace. We ran into our first snag last week with the discovery of some trapped ground water and muck under Green #8, which will require some mitigation and the installation of additional drainage pipes. Other than that hick-up, we are moving along within our budget and schedule.

Sincerely,

THE HAPPENINGS 3

GOLF RENOVATION UPDATE #4 - 5/21

Pepper Tree Clearing

We still have some work to do on #18 and #1 and will attempt to complete that in the next month

Irrigation Work

The mainline has been completed thru hole #18. Work has begun on individual holes with head installation. #1 and #2 have been completed. #18 is close to completion. Then it’s on to Holes 3 and 4. The tie-ins with the main line, for community irrigation, are close to completion.

Roto Till / Rough Shaping

Roto-Till work had reached #13 at the time of this update. Rough shaping of #5, #7 has been completed. #9 is in progress. Both #6 and #8 had a few challenges that are being addressed.

Greens Prep Work

Holes 18, 1, 2, 3, 4 have received the

USGA greens mix. The process of installing drainage lines with a rock layer has been fascinating to watch as has been the installing and wiring of the individual sprinkler heads around the green structures

In-House Projects

Ongoing and include: perimeter clearing; re-shaping fairway bunkers on #2 and #13; sodding the fairway bunker on the left side of #1; clearing of underbrush, on the lake bank on right side of #13, near back tee on #14, front left area of #12 green. Installation of a root-killing agent on #9 has produced favorable results.

Operations

The practice area is open for use by TGO residents only. Tokens are available during shop operating hours or at the CSA office. It will be ‘cash only sales’ if purchasing at the CSA office.

PLEASE USE EXTREME CAUTION in the practice range area when workers are present. Reciprocal play opportunities are still being scheduled by the golf shop and by Chuck when requested. Our golf car fleet is set to ship out. A new fleet is scheduled for November delivery.

Important Safety Notice

We have warned residents (and will continue to do so) to stay off of the golf course during the renovation period. Whether there are workers present or not, it is a construction area. Please do not travel on the golf course at any time unless accompanied by an approved TGO escort.

Update with Chuck & Shane

The next opportunity for a live briefing with Chuck & Shane on the renovation progress will be Friday, June 7th from 5 – 6 PM at the golf clubhouse

What is Sulfation?

Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge.

Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.

We Now Have the Capability to Reverse the Sulfation Process!

• Increase Your Battery Life-Span

• Return Lost Capacity to Your Used Batteries

• Keep Your Battery Pack(s) in Sulfate-Free Condition

• Save Money on Purchasing New Batteries

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES

Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

Check Your Golf Cart’s Brakes

Brakes that do not function will be your only excuse as to why you did not stop at a stop sign.

Therefore, according to page 54 of our TGO’s Rules and Regulations of the road, you will be receiving a Traffic Citation for failure to obey a posted traffic sign.

Contractor Restrictions

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:

• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.

The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

Peter’s Rock Agama

Florida’s (latest) Colorful Invader

Palm trees, beaches and lizards are all common to Florida’s landscape, but did you know not all lizards are native? In fact, University of Florida researchers tell us that there are three times the number of lizards in the Sunshine State that do not belong here naturally and are impacting various ecosystems and communities.

PETERS’S ROCK AGAMA, is a native to East Africa and known to grow as much as a foot. Scientists at UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) tell us this species is one that is not natural to Florida and has been spreading consistently since first documented. Chances are you have already come across the species in your own backyard even though it doesn’t belong.

18 THE HAPPENINGS

Invasive Intruders

Peter’s Rock Agama, also known as Agama mwanzae, might sound exotic, but these lizards are actually invasive in Florida. Originally from East Africa, they’ve made themselves at home in the Sunshine State via the pet trade, raising concerns about their impact on the local ecosystem.

Description

Picture this: a lizard sporting vibrant shades of blue, red, and orange, like a living rainbow. That’s Peter’s Rock Agama for you! Males flaunt these flashy colors to attract mates, while females opt for a more understated look.

Where to Spot Them

Keep your eyes peeled around urban areas, parks, and even your backyard. These agile climbers love basking on rocks, fences, and walls, soaking up the Florida sun.

Are They Harmful?

Despite their striking appearance, Peter’s Rock Agamas aren’t considered dangerous to humans. They’re more into bugs than bites, so you can relax knowing they won’t go after you or your pets.

Dining Preferences

When it’s time to eat, Peter’s Rock Agamas are all about that insect buffet. They munch on everything from beetles and ants to grasshoppers and spiders, helping to control pest populations.

From Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission:

Regulatory Status

Peter’s Rock agamas are not native to Florida and are regulated as Class III wildlife, meaning a permit is required to possess them for exhibition or sale. A permit is not required to possess them as personal pets.

While this species may be possessed as personal pets in Florida, responsible pet ownership is important. Don’t Let It Loose! Never release nonnative animals into the wild, including agamas. Doing so can negatively impact native wildlife and ecosystems, as well as be dangerous for your released pet. Owners may surrender unwanted pet agamas through the FWC’s Exotic Pet Amnesty Program, which facilities the rehoming process for surrendered nonnative pets to qualified adopters.

Can I remove agamas from my property or hunt them in Florida?

Agamas are not protected in Florida except by anti-cruelty laws and can be humanely killed on private property year-round with landowner permission. If you are not capable of safely removing agamas from your property, please seek assistance from a professional nuisance wildlife trapper.

Members of the public may remove and humanely kill agamas from 32 Commission-managed lands without a license or permit under Executive Order 23-16.

Environmental Impact

While these lizards may seem harmless, their presence in Florida can disrupt native ecosystems. Because of their size and high population densities, they may pose a threat to small native insects and reptiles both by preying upon native species and competing with them for resources. Peter’s rock agamas are often easy to see but can be difficult to catch. They compete with local species for food and territory, potentially upsetting the balance of the natural environment.

Keep an eye out for Peter’s Rock Agamas. If you spot one, enjoy the colorful sight, but also stay mindful of their potential impact on Florida’s delicate ecosystem.

EMERGENCY WATER STORAGE

For an emergency, you have to consider how to store emergency water.

Emergency Preparedness - By Ed Brown

It is getting warmer as we approach Summer. Winter rain kept TGO pretty well hydrated and we were able to conduct a successful prescribed burn with Florida Forestry on our southwest corner, BUT WAIT! June will usher in HURRICANE SEASON! Are we Ready? Are you ready NOW if your water is shut off by the storm? THINK ABOUT IT!

An adult human requires about 2 quarts of water per day just for drinking. Hot environments and intense physical or activity can double that amount. You can add another 2 quarts for brushing teeth, hand washing and food preparation.

For an emergency, you have to consider how to store emergency water.

If you are evacuating TGO by car: Load 1 gal. store bought water jugs on the back seat floor. At about 8 pounds per full jug, they are easy to handle and dispense. Individual cups and a water bowl for Fido should assure you all get out of the storm impact area in hydrated condition. Don’t forget your Cell Phone and charger and a Florida road map in case GPS lets you down. A NOAA Weather Radio will help keep track of the storm and allow revision of your escape route as needed. The goal is to stay out of the hurricane’s projected impact zone. Refill water jugs as needed from a safe source, if needed, but you shouldn’t have to travel far.

If you are evacuating TGO by Motorhome you should have a full water tank. A few jugs of store-bought water are a good thought as well. Store-bought water Jugs can be lined up along your inside garage wall for easy access, inventory and transfer.

For bulk water storage at home, a clean 35 gallon plastic barrel is a good choice. It should be cleaned, filled to the top and labeled with the date of fill and information on the method of

disinfection used. A hand pump and hose should be used to dispense the water. Rotate stored water every 1 to 2 years. Update your labels on stored water at that time

If a disaster catches you without a supply of clean water you can use the water in your home piping system. Know the location of your house water shut off valve. In a disaster in which your water company’s supply of water to your house has been interrupted (broken water main), shut off water to your house to prevent backflow of contaminated water. To use the water in your piping, let air into your plumbing by turning on the faucet in your house at the highest level. Some water may trickle out…Leave that faucet open. Then, open the lowest faucet in the house and drain the system of water as you need it. Water in municipal systems is treated, so melted ice cubes are a safe source too, as is water from the toilet tank, (NOT THE BOWL!) and water from your Hot Water Tank. Water, Water Everywhere” and you can be sure it is safe to drink.

Outside water sources should be suspect for purity. Strain contaminates (leaves, berries, lizards, etc.) with a camping supply water strainer, coffee filters, clean cheese cloth, pillow cases, etc. Decontaminate with unscented chlorine bleach: Clorox or Purex type bleach: 5.25 % sodium hypochlorite (4 or 5 drops per gallon), or boil in a large clean pan with a lid.

Clean water is your primary, Number 1 survival supply item. Plan your water storage NOW, while you have the time. Tape a copy of this Happenings article on your water storage area as a survival reminder for you, your family, a neighbor and dear Fido.

Preparing for Hurricane Season: Essential Tips for TGO Residents

HURRICANES

As the calendar flips to June, Floridians know what’s on the horizon: hurricane season. With the potential for powerful storms looming, it’s crucial to be prepared. Here are some essential tips to help you get ready and stay safe when the winds start to howl.

STAY INFORMED

Knowledge is your best defense against a hurricane. Stay tuned to local news and weather updates, especially during hurricane season. Sign up for alerts from your county’s emergency management office and keep a weather radio handy for updates, especially if power goes out.

HAVE A PLAN

Don’t wait until the last minute to figure out what to do. Sit down with your family and create a hurricane plan. Decide where you’ll go if you need to evacuate, how you’ll communicate if separated, and what supplies you’ll need to ride out the storm.

STOCK UP ON SUPPLIES

When a hurricane is on the horizon, stores quickly run out of essentials. Beat the rush by stocking up on supplies ahead of time. Make sure you have enough non-perishable food, water, medications, and other necessities to last at least a week.

SECURE YOUR HOME

Protect your property by securing windows and doors with storm shutters or plywood. Trim trees and shrubs to reduce the risk of debris flying around during a storm. Consider investing in hurricane-resistant doors and windows for added protection.

PREPARE FOR POWER OUTAGES

Hurricanes often knock out power for days or even weeks. Be ready by stocking up on flashlights, batteries, and a portable generator if possible. Keep your cell phone charged and consider investing in a solar charger for backup power.

KNOW YOUR EVACUATION ZONE

In the event of a major hurricane, evacuation may be necessary. Know your evacuation zone and have a plan in place for where you’ll go and how you’ll get there. Follow evacuation orders from local authorities, and leave early to avoid traffic jams.

PROTECT IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

Make copies of important documents like insurance policies, identification, and medical records, and store them in a waterproof container. You may also want to consider storing digital copies in the cloud for easy access from anywhere.

STAY SAFE AFTER THE STORM

The danger isn’t over when the winds die down. Stay indoors until local officials give the all-clear, as downed power lines, flooding, and other hazards can pose serious risks. Use caution when cleaning up debris, and be on the lookout for displaced wildlife, including snakes and alligators.

Hurricane season may be unpredictable, but with proper preparation, you can weather the storm safely. Stay informed, have a plan, and be ready to act when the time comes. Your safety and the safety of your loved ones are worth the effort. Continued on next page >

HONORING JOHN ROBERTS

MOTION

To rename the dock located on Lake Judy the “John Roberts Dock” and that a plaque be attached to the dock.

Over 20 years ago John began volunteering here in TGO, starting with picking up litter along our roadways. He has been instrumental in maintaining our lakes and improving our fish population. John has worked tirelessly to improve the area around Lake Judy. John has done a monthly pond topic talk about our ponds at the Nature Center for the past 10-12 years. In addition, twice a year he provides CSA a written report about pond conditions and recommendations. He also created feeding grounds for our Monarch Butterflies. Truly the list of his endeavors is endless. In short, there is nothing John would not do for the Great Outdoors to make it a better place for all of us. This is our way of thanking him for all the wonderful things he has done.

THE REST OF THE STORY: WUESTHOFF PARK

A Space Coast Hidden Gem

Wuesthoff Park, a 25 acre community park off Barna Avenue just south of SR 50. Visitors who drop by for a leisure hike will discover a natural Florida forest with three distinct woodland habitats: a wetland area, hardwood hammock and upland pine forest.

Last issue presented the Titusville Multi-Use Trail which is actually one half of the Wuesthoff Park whose entrance is across Barna Ave from the multi-Use Trailhead. This article is the rest of the story of this lovely park tucked away in Titusville.

The half-mile sandy nature trail wanders under towering trees through native plant and animal habitats, providing a glimpse of the natural Florida frontier.

Near the nature center, several picnic tables with a grill are located in an open grass area while a park bench offers a scenic view of the wetlands. Trail Clearing, plant identification and stakes, trail map, and site map are the result of volunteer opportunities.

Anchored around the Homer Powell Nature Center, honoring a Scoutmaster, the primary focus of Wuesthoff Park is hiking, biking, and picnicking.

While only 25 acres, it offers a surprising amount of habitat diversity, capturing a slice of what Titusville looked like before Kennedy Space Center kicked the first housing boom into high gear.

Ancient live oaks shade the expansive parking area. A boardwalk guides you through a willow and red maple marsh. A loop trail tunnels through palm and oak hammocks.

THE HIKE

From the parking area, follow the paved Wuesthoff Trail through the gap in the gate and into the park, towards the curve in the distance.

This segment of the Wuesthoff Trail arcs through the open space of Wuesthoff Park and is adjoined by a series of exercise stations that make up a fitness trail.

Within 200 feet, a boardwalk leads left to the Homer Powell Nature Center and restrooms.

Follow it, as it also provides the most direct access to the nature trail that starts with the willow marsh boardwalk.

While a short arc, the boardwalk shows off an open expanse of wetland on the left where swamp sunflowers flourish in early fall.

It is similar in character to nearby Windover bog, an archaelogical site where bodies buried under a layer of peat were carbon dated to over 7,000 years old.

The boardwalk curves right into a dense herbaceous marsh. Primrose willow and red maples catch your attention at eye level, with ferns at water level.

Ending within the enveloping fronds of a palm hammock, the boardwalk provides access to the natural footpath.

Follow the straightaway up a sandy ridge between the palms to a trail junction. Keep left.

The trail winds beneath the palm canopy, with an obvious dropoff into a basin to the left before the trail sweeps uphill.

Passing beneath a massive live oak, notice the transition with elevation. The upper canopy is defined by oaks, the forest floor lush with ferns.

At a sweeping curve to the right, the trail climbs a slight rise into mounds of grapevines, the downhill beyond leading into a hardwood hammock.

To the right, the trail makes a loop back to the junction. Follow this route and you’ll discover more ancient live oaks towering over the forest.

A wooden bench is on the left soon before the trail immerses in the palm hammock and reaches the junction. Backtrack down the straightaway and along the boardwalk through the marsh, emerging within sight of the nature center.

FROM THE EDITOR

It’s almost June and you know what that means!

June means sudden dramatic rain showers in the afternoon, bright sun, high temps, and...oh yeah, the possibility of hurricanes. It’s simply a part of living in this part of the world and, even though a direct hit from a big storm doesn’t happen to the Space Coast very often, it helps to be prepared.

Not to be alarmist but that’s why I have made “Being Prepared ” a feature story in this issue. See page 28. Interestingly, Ed Brown was thinking along the same lines with his submission “Emergency Water Storage ” on page 20. Great tips all around.

OK, now that everyone has preparedness tips we’re in good shape!

The rest of this issue of The Happenings has lots of non-disaster stuff. There’s the recognition of John Roberts (who I was fortunate to meet a few weeks ago) and his contributions to the beauty of The Great Outdoors. Also improving life at TGO is the Sawdust Club (SDC) seeing a need and jumping in to take care of it. Story (and photos) on page 66. I learn something new and interesting about TGO and the community with each issue that I do and finding out about the SDC and their contributions is one of them. Thanks to Doc Fraser for the subbmission!

Finally, I hope you check out the latest “hidden gem” article in this issue. Wuesthoff Park (and the multi-use trail from last issue) is such an unexpected lovely resource in the town and oh-so-close to TGO. If you decide to go take a look, I’m sure you will have appreciate it.

Enjoy the issue!

FREE Introductory Stretch Session For TGO Residents

Welcome to the New Age of Stretch!

Thanks to the modern sedentary lifestyle, after 30, most people start losing flexibility at an average rate of 1% a year. Strains and micro-stresses on your muscles compounded over time can glue them together. This “glue,” or scar tissue, tightens the surrounding tissue and restrains how you’re able to move. Over time, the snowballing loss of flexibility ages you. Stretch Zone’s isolation of individual muscles within a muscle group breaks up the glue, unwrapping the stranglehold on your posture and valuable energy. Proper stretching slows down the aging process. You will feel younger by improving posture, circulation, and increasing your range of motion.

For a FREE 30 minute session, please give us a call: Stretch Zone in Titusville: 321- 567 4085

APPLE TIP: COPY & PASTE TEXT ON iPHONE/iPAD

Alright, let’s dive into the riveting world of copying and pasting text on an iPhone…

TGO’s Own Rosie The Riveter

Contributor: Doc Fraser

The patio chairs at the Blue Heron were falling apart but The Sawdust Club’s very own “Rosie the Riveter” recently made it possible for the group to make repairs and give the chairs new life (as well as keeping patrons safe).

Trouble On The Patio

The patio chairs at the Blue Heron had so deteriorated that they were unsafe to seat patrons. Because of that, all 60 chairs had to be taken out of service while the CSA ordered some replacement seat bottoms. The Sawdust Club (SDC) volunteered to install the replacement seat bottoms, which are held in place with four (4) pop rivets. They already had all of the tools to accomplish the task, so when the replacement seats arrived on April 23rd, they were ready to go.

The SDC Makes It Happen

The CSA Maintenance team delivered the stored chairs to the SDC so that work could

ABOUT THE SDC

begin on the morning of April 24th. Bright and early that morning an enthusiastic team of five (5) volunteers showed up, raring to go and got right to work disassembling the seats. They needed to drill new holes, align the new seats, and secure them with new pop rivets.

Key to the operation was SDC Secretary, Laura Sievers – the group’s own Rosie the Riveter—wielding her pneumatic rivet gun .

The team of Laura, Ron Peoples, Dick Powers (SDC VP), Harold Witschi (Tucco), and Doc Fraser zipped through the project installing thirty-two (32) seat bottoms within thirty (30) minutes!

The Great Outdoors Sawdust Club was established in May 1993 as a Not-For-Profit Corporation. The purpose of the SDC is to provide a facility that enables its membership the opportunity to pursue wood and metal working and homeowner DIY projects in a safe environment. With our members’ help, we can continue to grow our club membership, acquire new equipment, and expand the possibilities for member interests.

The SDC is fortunate that its membership consists of many skilled crafts persons across a broad range of skill sets. The members freely share their projects with others, quite often seeking advice from the

“Our Work Here is Done”

They then notified the CSA Maintenance Team (who probably didn’t think they would hear from the SDC team for a few hours) that the seats were all set to be back in safe service on the Blue Heron patio. A big “Thank You and Well Done” to the SDC for the speedy, efficient work! Enjoy the repaired chairs while watching the construction on the 18th hole!

The SDC is always interested in providing assistance to the CSA and individual Owners within TGO. They consider this simply being good citizens and endeavor to help out when and where they can.

more experienced members. Collaboration and sharing are routine values for both inexperienced members and the experienced members. It is recognized that most members generally join the club with some shop tool experience, ranging from professional craftsman to hobbyist. Members often provide valuable services to TGO homeowners, TGO Community Services Association, Activity Committee, and the Nature Center.

The membership of the SDC is limited to TGO Owners and their family members that reside in TGO. If you are interested in becoming a new member or would like more information, please send an email to: tgosawdustclub@gmail.com .

70 THE HAPPENINGS

Funny Thing Is…

Growing Old, Not Up!

I’M GROWING OLD, NOT UP.

Yeah, you would think after 60+ years on the planet I would start acting a little more mature but I think at this point I’m willing to admit, IT’S NOT HAPPENING!

Oh yes, I have parts of my life where I have to climb into a suit for certain meetings or receptions.

It’s like stuffing a foam mattress into a microwave. It’s a battle to get everything in there, it’s busting at the seams to get out and it won’t relax until it’s outta there. It’s just the big kid in me who doesn’t want to put the nice clothes on to go to church but would rather stay in his board shorts and flip-flops and play in the sand at the beach. It’s funny that as a kid I used to say “I don’t wanna, I don’t wanna,” whenever I had to dress up for something. Well, I find myself doing that again at this age.

That’s not all.

I would rather go to a theme park than a board meeting. I would rather go bowling or golf rather than sit in a homeowners meeting. You too? So I’m not alone am I?

When we’re little kids all we want to do is play and eat candy. As an immature senior I find all I want to do is play and eat chocolate. I’ve substituted draft beer and wine for lemonade but other than that I’m still that playful little kid— only in a wrinkly body.

Remember how much fun those bumper cars were at the carnivals? You would try not to get hit while plotting how you were going to push the other cars out of your way. Well, I find that experience was actually good training for driving on I-4. The only difference is the kids in the bumper cars never used their middle finger as a communication device.

So don’t feel that since your hair is gray you have to act all mature. Let yourself be the kid inside because it’s ok to grow old, not up.###
