Dear TGO Community,
Given that it’s our low season, there sure is a a lot of activity going on here at TGO. I hope those of you who are away this summer will return to TGO and notice the improvements being made. For those of you who are here now, I hope the projects are not a huge inconvenience.
The most noticeable improvement project underway is our Golf Course Renovation. Our roads and our golf course are busy with workers and equipment. Our contractors are now “over the hump” as they move beyond the ½ way mark in their contracted work. Irrigation and shaping efforts are now focused on the “back 9” golf holes in our community. By the end of July, I expect our contractors will finish their work and Shane and his team will begin growing grass well into the fall. While our course is closed, Golf Pro Chuck Kandt is arranging offsite play, and offering some clinics at the driving range to keep our golfers swinging!
I reported a few weeks ago that irrigation is now “ON” for all properties throughout TGO. For approximately seven weeks, we shut down irrigation to almost ½ of the TGO properties that are tied into the golf course irrigation pumps. While this irrigation was off, we temporarily lifted a restriction on using your home’s potable water to irrigate your yard. This restriction from using potable water for irrigation is now back in effect. Please help us conserve water, remove those hoses and sprinklers from your yard, and know that our CSA irrigation system is “ON”. I hope Mother Nature will also help keep your lawns watered through the heat of the summer.
Our new Blue Heron Restaurant Manager, Steven Powers, is in his 3rd week leading our restaurant team. Steve is doing a great job of cleaning and organizing our dining areas, getting familiar with the talents of our restaurant staff, and organizing our back of house and inventory. We are hosting a meet and greet for Steve tonight, Friday, June 7th, from 4pm-7pm. You will find 2 for 1 drink specials, a taco bar and pulled pork specials for $10. Steve is working on some ideas to offer a nice meal prior to Bingo on Tuesday nights beginning next week. Please come by Blue Heron and witness Steve’s hard work to provide the quality food and service our owners deserve.
There are many other scheduled and unscheduled improvements happening now at TGO. This week we closed The Manor for a day to steam clean the carpets and floors. We installed the “John Roberts Dock” plaque on the dock’s entrance to honor John’s 20 years of service to our community. We completed an “OSHA-10” training and certification course for ten of our senior staff members last week. Some electrical problems on our Lake Judy fountain have caused us to send the fountain back to the manufacturer for some electrical troubleshooting.
As we get closer to election season, I kindly remind everyone that we strictly enforce our political sign policy. The policy reads: The maximum size of Political Signs will be 2 feet by 3 feet. Only one sign per candidate or issue is permitted on a unit. Signs may be displayed up to 30 days before an election day and must be removed within 3 days after Election Day. There are two upcoming elections, the Primary Elections on Tuesday, August 20th, and the General Election on Tuesday, November 5th. Please wait until 30 days prior to these elections to display a sign.
Sincerely,
Billy Specht CSA ManagerSteve Powers takes the wheel at Blue Heron

Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge.
Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.
We Now Have the Capability to Reverse the Sulfation Process!
• Increase Your Battery Life-Span
• Return Lost Capacity to Your Used Batteries
• Keep Your Battery Pack(s) in Sulfate-Free Condition
• Save Money on Purchasing New Batteries

The Second Quarter Maintenance Assessment for 2024 is due July 1. Please drop off your payment of $995 at the CSA Office or mail your check to: The Great Outdoors at 100-D Plantation Drive, Titusville, FL 32780. You can also fill out a form to have your payment drawn directly from your bank account. The payment must be received by 5:00 pm on July 21, 2024 or there will be a $25 late fee.
It’s always good to stop and review what our quarterly assessments go towards. TGO is like a small city and it takes a lot of coordination and manpower to keep us running efficiently. Our lawn crew, irrigation and waste water management team, our CSA patrol and CSA administration staff, plus our residents, all work together to keep TGO a great place.

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.
Brakes that do not function will be your only excuse as to why you did not stop at a stop sign.
Therefore, according to page 54 of our TGO’s Rules and Regulations of the road, you will be receiving a Traffic Citation for failure to obey a posted traffic sign.
Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA.

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.
AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.
The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings.

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:
• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.
• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.
• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.
• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.
• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.
• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.
• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.
Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris.
The crew has to pick this up!
• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.
There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:
• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.
• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.
• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.
• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.
• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.
• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.
NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

I am not yet sold on Lithium-Ion Battery power for Electric Vehicles (EVs) but I must admit to loving my workshop full of LI battery powered tools: several Electric Drills, Hedge Trimmers, Leaf Blowers and Saws. In the office is this laptop which I have used for 12 years to write Firewise articles and a cell phone. We all have LI powered Cell Phones. So why the reluctance to a LI Battery powered car? I’m in the process of learning and I’m going to drag you with me. Don’t kick or scream. Let’s get the story:
Any battery charging can lead to overheating and fire. With lead-Acid Bats, when the water gets low, heat builds up during charging process and near-by flammable materials can catch fire. There is not much difference with LI batteries except that they don’t recharge from a generator when the car is running. They recharge at a charging station when the battery is plugged in. It could be in your garage or in the Wall Mart Parking Lot! Yes, there is a monetary charge for your EV battery charge that will allow you to drive a specific distance beforeyournextcharge. “Blessyouifyouarestillwithme, butcomparedtodrivingmy“gas guzzler”, this is getting complicated.
From a FIREWISE standpoint, if you see SMOKE or FLAMES coming from your car, truck or RV, signal, get to a safe location off the road, stop, turn off the engine, get everyone out of the vehicle. Never Return To A Burning Vehicle For Anything and stay out of the smoke. Move everyone at least 100 feet from the vehicle and well away from traffic. Call 911 and give a good estimate of your location
Here are some tips for charging an electric vehicle at home:
• Before charging an electric vehicle at home, have a qualified electrician check your electrical system to see if it can handle charging.
• Install charging equipment in safe locations. Keep away from busy areas and things that could catch fire.
• Use devices that are listed by a qualified testing Lab.
• Read and follow all manufacturer directions.
• Never use damaged chargers or cords.
• Do not use more than one plug or extension cord with a charger.
• Keep charging cords out of reach of children or animals.
• Cover charging station outlet to keep water out.
• When charging an EV at home, unplug charger at night. This applies to all your LI
• powered tools as well.
• Do not ride your electric bike, park it in the garage, on charge and go on vacation
I see an increasing number of EVs in TGO and on the roads outside. Perhaps the Electric Vehicle concept needs to mature...and perhaps I do as well.

Kenneth Gerald O’Dea, 70, passed on May 31, 2024.
Son of Kenneth Gerald O’Dea, Sr. and predeceased by Mother, Wanda Dolores O’Dea. Big Brother to Karen (John) O’Connor, Kimberly (Eric) Landgraf, and Katherine O’Dea. Loving Husband of the late Gloria Jean O’Dea. Father of Lauren O’Dea, Kenneth Gerald O’Dea, III (Ashley). Pop pop (like a father) to Kayla Dexter (fiance’ Zachary Redding). Step-father to Amber (Victor) Nappier. Grandfather of Ashton Nappier, Olivia Donaway (Collin), Hope Jade O’Connor, Taylor Grimes, Nicholas Liupaeter, Jr., Aubrey O’Dea, and Graison King. “Favorite” Uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Ken, a.k.a. Kenny, had one great love in his life - Gloria. Although he was constantly looking for a second great love, he never found her. He loved his children and grandchildren with all his heart and gave off his time freely - even dropping everything to drive his granddaughter across the country at the last minute. He loved to golf, and was very competitive - both in his desire to win and his skill - especially in his younger years. He loved to dance. He often took his dad to their favorite haunts so they could enjoy the music of a favorite band and he’d always be on the floor with his little sister, Kathy, doing the swing dance! He was an entrepreneur. He owned a successful pizza delivery business and a successful floor cleaning business. He had a quick, sharp wit and could debate on many and varied subjects. Ken had great style and was an impeccable dresser. He was a true gentleman who carried himself with class and poise. Although somewhat stubborn in his opinions, he would always agree to disagree. He loved “The Great Outdoors,” and will be missed by many of the residents who he became close friends with. He also had a great many friends in Maryland and Arizona. He will be missed by all of them! He was loved dearly! Until we meet again, Ken. FORE!
Kenneth Gerald O’Dea. February 13, 1954 - May 31, 2024 (age 70)

SSteve Powers has a presence.
He’s tall with a bright easy smile and spiky white hair. You can’t miss him.
When we first met he was on the phone in his office, busy trying to figure out passwords and access to the various accounts that he needed while the liquor sales rep was also waiting for him in the lobby, tapping her foot while scrolling on her phone.
But, while he was busy, he wasn’t at all rattled. He greeted me warmly with a firm handshake and seemed ready (or at least willing)to take pictures—even though it was clear to me that he didn’t have the time. We decided to reschedule the photo session for the following day. With a palpable sense of relief he hurried over to the sales rep to make sure the Blue Heron could have beer and wine in stock for the next week.
Essentials first!
We got together for a photo session the next morning. First we spent a little bit of time chatting and then proceeded to take solo photos of him. But Steve is all about the team and after a short while he suggested that we get photos of him with the staff. As soon as they came out, I could tell that he was already making a difference. Their energy was high, smiles and laughter all around, and they seemed genuinely excited to be working with Steve.
I could sense a high level of optimism from everyone and, after spending a short time with Steve, I’m feeling it too.
Tell me a little about your background
I was born in Detroit, Michigan I love the Pittsburgh Steelers and football.
Who introduced you to cooking and the restaurant business?
I was introduced to cooking through my dad seeing him singing and dancing enjoy cooking
How did you find out about the opportunity with Blue Heron?
I found out they were hiring from Indeed
Did you know about TGO beforehand?
I knew nothing about The Great Outdoors before hand, never heard of it After seeing it I think it’s fantastic. I love it.
You have managed restaurants for years - what is the biggest challenge?
I’ve been managing restaurants for 30 years and taking over restaurants that are struggling. That’s my specialty.
What about it gives you the most pleasure?
My pleasure comes from seeing everybody happy eating and enjoying themselves.
What is your management philosophy?
I think a manager should be a big cheerleader for the restaurant and moral support and strength for the employees that work in the restaurant
What’s your vision for Blue Heron?
My vision for Blue Heron is great food, consistency, fun, great drinks, [and making] a place where everybody wants to go.
Don’t miss: meet and greet for Steve, Friday, June 7th, from 4pm-7pm
As the summer sun blazes down on Florida, finding relief from the sweltering heat becomes a top priority. While AC may be the go-to solution for many, there are plenty of other ways to stay cool and comfortable without cranking it up. Here are five easy tips to help you beat the heat and enjoy the Florida summer to the fullest.
When the sun is at its peak, seek refuge in the shade. Whether it’s under a tree, a patio umbrella, or a canopy, shade offers a respite from the intense heat. Plan outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon when the sun’s rays are less harsh, and take advantage of shaded areas whenever possible.
Hydration is key to staying cool in the Florida heat. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Opt for water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges to help replenish electrolytes and keep you hydrated from the inside out.
When the heat becomes unbearable, cool off with a refreshing splash of water. Take a dip in a pool, visit a local water park, or head to the beach for a swim in the ocean. If those options aren’t available, try setting up a sprinkler in the backyard or filling up a kiddie pool for instant relief.
Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen to help keep you cool in the summer heat. Opt for loose-fitting clothing in light colors, which reflect rather than absorb the sun’s rays. Don’t forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from the sun’s glare.
Think outside the box when it comes to staying cool. Freeze a damp washcloth and use it as a makeshift ice pack, or fill a spray bottle with water and mist yourself periodically for a refreshing burst of coolness. Create your own personal fan by placing a bowl of ice in front of a tabletop fan for an instant breeze.
With these five easy tips, you can beat the heat and enjoy all that the Florida summer has to offer without relying on air conditioning. Stay shaded, stay hydrated, and get creative with cooling methods to stay cool and comfortable all season long.

“The Happenings” is certainly an appropriate name for this publication. There really is something happening all the time at TGO. It seems nice and quiet when you first drive in but...
The big news is Steve Powers coming on board as the new manager of Blue Heron. I was able to meet him last week and spend some time taking photos for a feature article in this issue (pages 38/39). He’s a person that you like right away and it was a delight to meet him. Plus it was an opportunity for me to do something I really love: photography.
My first career was as a commercial photographer and on-location editorial portraits were a frequent assignment. Last week’s session with Steve was low-key but brought back the “feels” since it has been a while. The photo of me here is from “back in the day” directing a shoot for a lottery technology company. I wouldn’t mind having that hair back!
Rounding it out this issue are pieces I hope you will enjoy and find interesting: a new “hidden gem”, tips to Beat The Heat, a fun “Trail Scorecard” from Kris Lee-Scott, as well as the regulars like Dr. Sammy’s “Funny Thing Is...” and Ed Brown’s “Firewise.” Enjoy the issue!

Thanks to the modern sedentary lifestyle, after 30, most people start losing flexibility at an average rate of 1% a year. Strains and micro-stresses on your muscles compounded over time can glue them together. This “glue,” or scar tissue, tightens the surrounding tissue and restrains how you’re able to move. Over time, the snowballing loss of flexibility ages you. Stretch Zone’s isolation of individual muscles within a muscle group breaks up the glue, unwrapping the stranglehold on your posture and valuable energy. Proper stretching slows down the aging process. You will feel younger by improving posture, circulation, and increasing your range of motion.

Lemons float, but limes sink! Lemons and limes both have densities that are very close to water, so you would expect that they would both float. However, limes are slightly denser than lemons, which is why they will sink when unpeeled and lemons float. Peeling the fruit affects the density of the lemon, it will now sink slightly.

It would take 19 minutes to fall to the center of the earth. But energy is lost due to friction. That loss means you wouldn’t be able to overcome the pull of gravity to make it to the other side. Instead, you would fall back down before reaching the far side’s surface.
Your brain alone burns around 400-500 calories each day. That’s about a fifth of your total energy requirements. Most of this is concerned with the largely automatic process of controlling your muscles and processing sensory input, although some studies show solving tricky problems increases your brain’s metabolic requirements too.
Africa is the only continent in all four hemispheres. For people whose education was largely focused on the Western world, it may be surprising to find out exactly how huge the continent of Africa is. For instance, it spans all four hemispheres and covers nearly 12 million square miles.

Relaxed birding on foot paths and boardwalks in a lush forest of mature saw palmettos. The trails wind through seasonally flooded forests through a thicket of ferns under the shade of live oaks.
Speeding along the A. Max Brewer Parkway on the way to the Canaveral National Seashore, it’s easy to zip right past two lovely trails that offer a few miles of pleasant, easy hiking. Heading east, you will see the sign for the trails on your left just after passing Peacock’s Pocket Road.
The Oak Hammock Trail and the Palm Hammock Trail at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge share their trailhead and parking lot. Both trails start on the same path before splitting off in different directions. They are not directly connected so it requires returning to the start to combine them into one longer hike.
Oak Hammock Trail
The term “oak hammock” refers to a stand of live oaks that grow on a plot of land slightly higher in elevation than the surrounding wetlands. In Florida, this elevation difference may only be a few feet, but it is enough to create a section of dry land that supports vegetation unable to grow in the wet areas. As you walk around the Oak Hammock Trail, notice that you are often surrounded by marsh. If you are hiking in the winter—the dry season in Florida—you may see more mud than water, but this won’t be the case once the rains come starting in May.
From the parking lot, follow the “Oak Hammock” sign to begin the hike. The terrain is covered in ferns, and it brings to mind
clockwise from top: the trail winds under a canopy of oaks; informative signage is sprinkled along the trail; one of the serveral boardwalks over the wet areas; boardwalk at the Oak Hammock Trail loop split
scenes in “Jurassic Park” or “Avatar.” However, within just a few minutes, the trail crosses some railroad tracks, and on the other side, the ferns end and the oak hammock terrain begins.
The Oak Hammock Trail is a typical nature trail, with signs along the way providing information about the animals and plants you may encounter on the hike. The trail is wide, flat, and well-manicured. It does pass through some wetlands, and there are boardwalks to keep visitors out of the mud where the trail gets really wet.
Palm Hammock Trail
Though described as a loop in the park brochure, the Palm Hammock Trail is actually a 0.7mile out-and-back trail with a 0.6-mile loop at the end, resembling a lasso.
From the parking lot, follow the “Palm Hammock” sign to begin the journey. The terrain is covered in ferns, very similar to the Oak Hammock Trail. After a short hike, the trail crosses the rails and enters a live oak and saw palmetto forest. The vegetation is the same as on the Oak Hammock Trail, but once you get to the loop where the Palm Hammock is, you will see the difference as the trail loops under towering cabbage palms.
Both trails are an easy hike with well-maintained boardwalks. Depending on the season be prepared for some muddy patches, possibly wet areas, and mosquitoes. The author encountered numerous determined swarms early on a recent May morning.
Getting There
Route 406 from Titusville to the A Max Brewer Memorial Pkwy pass the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center and the trailhead parking lot is 1.2 miles on the left.

Retirement means you can finally relax and take it easy after all those decades of hard work, doesn’t it? So how come you hear so many retirees saying “I’ve never worked harder in my life.” If that’s true, and you are getting less money, what were you thinking?
Consider this. You wake up the first morning after retirement, roll over and look at your partner through all those years and your first thought is, “I’m going to help her out around here.” When she wakes up that first morning and looks at you her first thought is, “How am I going to get anything done with him around here? ” You head into the kitchen to make her the cup of coffee she drinks to start each day, but you have no idea how she takes it. You brew the best pot of coffee you ever made, and you proudly deliver what you think should be the new featured flavor at Starbucks. Now did you ever see that movie The Exorcist? Remember where the little girl’s head spins completely around and she throws up pea soup? Same visual. She thinks you are trying to poison her but in reality you probably just invented an inexpensive way to kill roaches without even trying.
After she recovers it’s time to get to work on all those home projects you’ve been so anxious to get to. Thinking you are helping you proclaim that “we are going to finally organize this place.” Way to go. You just insulted her and everything she did for the
last three decades in perfecting her domain that YOU are now invading. Now you’re on a roll. What are you going to do next? You decide to make it up to her by getting frisky. You may want to look at yourself in the mirror first because you’ve never been a morning person and right now you look like the thing Dr. Frankenstein brought back to life. Talk about a bad hair day! To avoid this encounter she decides to assign you dozens of little odd jobs to keep you distracted. It’s called a “Honey Do” list but really it’s a “Honey Don’t” list, as in “Honey don’t touch me until you take a shower!” You quickly finish each task and to her frustration immediately report in, only to be assigned another, then another, and so on. By the end of the day you didn’t get what you really wanted and are too tired to even want it anymore. Wow, you’ve never worked so hard in your life have you? Maybe you should call your old boss and see if you can get your job back. At least HE might give you a bonus!
