MOVIE NIGHT JUNE 28 7:00 P.M.

Tom Hanks • John Mayer • David McCullough • Sam Shepard

R Ngoc Minh Quan owns a Chinese restaurant in London. He picks up his teenaged daughter at school and takes her to a shop so she can buy a dress. She goes into the store while he parks the car. Suddenly there’s a big explosion from an IRA-planted bomb and Quan’s daughter is among those killed. Inconsolable afterwards, Quan is visited by two detectives and he asks if they will find and punish the bombers. Although he is told they will, Quan decides to try and find those responsible by himself. He was previously much more than a humble restaurateur, and his skills will come in handy. This movie is MPAA rated R for strong violence, language, and some sexual material.

This is a documentary portrait of artists, writers, and collectors who remain steadfastly loyal to the typewriter as a tool and a source of inspiration. It features actor Tom Hanks, singer John Mayer, author and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner David McCullough, the late actor and author Sam Shepard, and others. Also shown are the struggles of California Typewriter, one of the last repair shops in the USA dedicated to keeping the old machines clicking. Most of us can remember when typewriters were a valuable technology in business and literature, not quaint artifacts from the last century. Hard-core typewriter fans are ensuring that these predigital marvels live on.

COMMUNITY SERVICES ASSOCIATION

MANAGER’S CORNER • June 15, 2018

Dear TGO Community, This issue of The Happenings features some Pictures of Progress photos (on Page 6) showing one of our summer improvement projects, the installation of a new stainless steel Hydra-Stop potable water valve. The photos were taken during the installation at 784 Plantation Drive near the entrance to Grande Haven Drive. There are five other valve installation sites throughout TGO that will be completed, for a total of six new valves this year. You may recall that we installed ten of these valves last year. The valves are important to our community because they allow our utilities team to better control our aging potable water distribution system when we need to repair a leak or perform service. The more new valves we install, the less likely you will be inconvenienced by being without water, and required to “boil water” when we need to isolate a leak or conduct a repair. I am proud of Eric Wells, our utilities supervisor, who led this valve install project supported closely by Jonathan Lyerly, our utilities lead, and several members of our facilities team. Eric spent many weeks preparing for this project, studying our utilities maps, consulting with experts and considering the most effective location for these new valves. Eric then made sure that all underground utilities such as irrigation, power, cable, phone, and waste water, were located and marked prior to digging. Next, Eric and Jonathan organized and tested all the tools, supplies, and equipment necessary to do the job. Days before the installation, Eric organized his team at the dig sites and discussed safe excavation strategies, then began the dig to expose sections of our underground potable water lines while dealing with lots of wet weather. Eric and crew worked alongside technicians from Florida Flow Control to safely and successfully install our new, all-stainless steel Hydra-Stop valves … all without interrupting or shutting down our potable water system. Eric and crew then restored the dig sites and now these areas look as though this work never happened, except for the addition of a brand-new valve box cover. Congrats to Eric, Jonathan, and the facilities team on a job well-done. I will keep you posted using this Manager’s Corner article in The Happenings on all future summer improvement projects, and there are several more projects to come. I also wish to remind our community that we will continue our summer “Play 18 for $20” special rate on our golf course through August 31. In closing, our Blue Heron Restaurant Manager, Chef Larry Bandor asked me to extend his heartfelt Thank You to the entire TGO community. As you may know, Larry lost his wife of 26 years, Mary Michelle Bandor, on Thursday, May 3. Larry received a huge outpouring of love and support from all of you during this difficult time. He wishes to thank you for the hundreds of cards, gifts, thoughts and prayers that you sent him, which greatly comforted him and his family while coping with their loss. Sincerely,

Billy Specht, CAM

AED BASICS HAVE SOMEONE CALL 9-1-1 WHILE YOU OPERATE AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. See the 4 list on The Happenings last page.

RIDDLE to SOLVE

Why did the golfer always wear two pairs of pants at the same time whenever he played? The answer is somewhere in this issue. ®

Firewise Information EVACUATION: Vehicle Fuel Storage and Transfer

by Ed Brown

In an early evacuation from TGO (before an evacuation order is given), will your vehicle have enough fuel? Always keep your RV tank full, and always have at least a half tank of gas in your car. If you have to leave your RV on the side of the road and continue on in your car, how many miles do you have “in the tank?” Gasoline is a highly volatile liquid hydrocarbon fuel. That means its vapors will evaporate in an invisible cloud from an open or leaking container. Introduce a spark to that cloud and the vapors will “flash” or explode. A spark can come from static electricity. A safety tip is to always make sure the gas station pump nozzle makes contact with the your vehicle’s gas tank filler before you start the flow of gasoline. Any electrical device, when turned on, produces sparks. Turn off the engine before fueling. A steel screwdriver dropped on the concrete near an open container or gasoline can can produce a fatal spark. A day before the arrival of Hurricane Irma in September 2017, traffic on Interstate 95 was normal going past Titusville. By the time Oak Hill was reached, traffic in the northbound lanes had slowed to five miles per hour and was bumper-to-bumper. It took three hours and lots of fuel to get to Daytona Beach. There are three major northbound evacuation routes out of Central Florida: Interstate 75, Interstate 95, and the Florida Turnpike. Here are some questions and answers about fuel if you must evacuate on those highways: 1. Do you think that gas stations on or near those routes won’t run out of their fuel supply? Answer: Gas stations in New Smyrna were running out two days before Hurricane Irma arrived. 2. Is the gas or diesel on-board in your vehicle “enough?” Answer: “Enough” is enough until it runs out. 3. Should you store and carry spare fuel? Answer: It’s your choice, and it can be safe, if done correctly. 4. How do I keep stored fuel “fresh?” Answer: Add fuel stabilizer, from Walmart or an auto parts store, to maintain octane rating. 5. How do I safely store or transport gasoline? Answer: Store in U.L. Approved fuel cans with filler spout tightly closed. Gasoline weighs 8 pounds per gallon. A quality made 2½ gallon plastic fuel container is convenient and portable. Be sure to securely strap the container down when carrying it in your vehicle. 6. How do I transfer that fuel from the gas can to my vehicle’s gas tank? Answer: Very carefully. Make sure spout is secure, uncap, lift, pour into vehicle fuel tank, recap spout, resecure gas can to keep from tipping over. Check for leaks. You shouldn’t smell fumes from can. Now you are a bit more prepared for an emergency evacuation. Be aware, safe, and patient. Preparedness is another key to survival. It can also facilitate a good night’s sleep.
