THE “BUG-OUT” BAG REVISITED

If you have to leave your home (or bug-out) in TGO because of a weather disaster (impending Hurricane, a Tornado or a Flood, even a Hazmat Spill, or a Wildland Fire), the essential items you want to have with you could be carried in a paper bag or in a cardboard box. Neither packing option would be comfortable to carry about, or be dry in a rain storm, or be practical. Think Backpack(s)! (Check outdoor equipment sales, or surplus military gear, or local stores or on-line). If your evacuation vehicle runs out of fuel or just dies, you might be hoofi ng it. Check the backpack for comfort as best you can. Some store-bought items to consider adding to your backpack are the following: 1. Parachute cord for multipurpose rigging 2. Notebook and pen 3. Compass for navigating 4. Flashlight for night use and signaling 5. Dry tinder, butane lighter and matches for fi re starting 6. Pot for cooking and boiling water 7. Prescription medications and medical information, doctors names and phone numbers 8. Bottled water and emergency food. Stores may not be open. You will get hungry! 9. Never have less than a half tank of fuel for your vehicle 10. Pack a change of clothes, a serviceable knife or mult- tool and toilet paper 11. Wear sturdy shoes. Take a jacket, towels, work gloves and a hat. 12. Your cell phone and charger, cash money, and essential phone numbers 13. Family contact information (keep them informed) 14. Personal protection equipment of choice 15. A copy of Florida Atlas and Gazetteer by DeLorme, available in book stores This is a “recommended” list. Add to it, Improve it, Update it and Make it your own! There may be things on this list that you don’t know anything about. What a wonderful and practical opportunity to learn! As you can now appreciate, this is not a last minute, throw- it- together eff ort!

The Florida Atlas & Gazetteer by DeLorme is more than a book, it is a valuable reference guide to Florida’s landscape that includes streets, backroads, water sources and attractions. A valuable evacuation tool. Available online or at major book stores.
