Meet The Parrottrek Couple
Seventeen years on the road with a couple of parrots is not the kind of story you get to read about very often. That’s exactly what Frank and Suzy Whitmore have been doing - traveling around the country with a couple of bird brains and, at the same time, holding down a variety of jobs that have provided a lifetime full of memories. Frank and Suzy will probably be the first to say that traveling with birds has its unique challenges, but they’ll also tell you there isn’t a single thing they would change about their lives and all the adventures they’ve experienced. Our Friend - The Very, Valuable Vulture
Vultures are considered Nature’s Custodians and we’re not talking about how they are always tearing open your trash bags right after you take them to the curb. Our friend the vulture plays a large role in balancing our ecosystem. They mainly feast on old carcasses, helping to eliminate the spread of diseases like rabies and tuberculosis. Truth be told, vultures are actually very clean creatures... if you consider defecating on your own legs to be a clean habit. There is a lot to know about these dead varmint eating creatures and our very own nature master, Betty Salter, fills us in on the facts about these necessary and wonderful birds. Continued on page 54

Manager’s Corner June 24, 2022 Dear TGO Community, This week began with a pre-dawn thunderstorm delivering over four inches of rain to TGO in just two hours. This heavy rainstorm was a good test of our stormwater distribution system. Shortly after the storm, I inspected our major stormwater drainage ditches flowing out to the St. Johns River. I’m happy to report the drainage improvement projects that CSA conducted during the dry season are paying off now. Stormwater was efficiently flowing away from our TGO property with no major backups or flooding issues, just some large puddles in some of our lowest spots. This week our lawn crew lost a day of mowing on Monday due to wet turf, but we used this time to trim the vegetative buffers around our lakes. CSA maintains a 3-foot buffer of vegetation around our lakes to help filter excess nutrients and grass cuttings before they enter the pond water. Our standard is to keep these buffers between 8 inches and 18 inches high. Our rules state that homeowners are not allowed to cut or trim this 3-foot buffer. If you notice that the buffer behind your home is higher than our standard, please call the CSA office and we’ll adjust it for you. Many improvement projects began this week and are now in full gear. The Manor Pool resurfacing project is now underway. New parking lot striping in our Manor and Library parking lots was completed on Monday. The replacement Lake Judy dock project started on Monday. The CSA office renovation project passed the “rough-in” inspection on Friday and we are now continuing work at a good pace. Finally, the nature trial fence project will continue this week and should be completed soon, weather permitting. This is my final reminder to our TGO family that it’s time to vote! Please help select our own Blue Heron Restaurant and TGO Golf Club as “Best of the Best” in Brevard County. We are honored to be nominated by Florida Today for this local recognition. Our community has worked very hard in recent years to support and improve our Blue Heron Restaurant and TGO Golf Course as assets we are proud of, so winning this recognition would be a special way to validate this hard work. Check out Page 10 of this issue of The Happenings, scan the QR code and follow directions to vote and help us win. I will vote as often as the website allows! Happy Independence Day everyone! This is the final issue of The Happenings prior to the 4th of July holiday, which falls on a Monday this year, and the CSA office will be closed Monday for the holiday. Please remember that NO fireworks are permitted to be used within TGO, but you can still enjoy fireworks and fun in North Brevard during the “Red, White and Boom” event which is back this year. The City of Titusville will offer a patriotic firework display just after dark, and this event also includes vendors, activities, and a DJ. This is happening at the Chain of Lakes Park in north Titusville from 7:00 to 10:00 pm, be sure to bring a lawn chair and enjoy the fun. Sincerely
Billy Specht CSA Manager

The Projects Continue...
It’s not a glamorous photo, but this year’s project to resurface three sewer manholes has been completed. Next on this year’s facilities project list is to clean out the southern half of our main sewer line on Plantation which has become partially clogged over the last 30 years. These are projects that you don’t see, and really don’t want to see, but they are necessary to keep our sewer system flowing properly to our treatment plant.
President’s Council Meetings Beginning with the first meeting in October, we will meet at the CSA Pavilion on the third (3rd) Tuesday of each month at 10:00 am. The dates for the monthly meetings are: October 18, 2022; November 15, 2022; December 20, 2022; January 17, 2023; February 21, 2023; March 21, 2023; April 18, 2023. AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED
The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO
There are 38 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby: • It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator. • Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes. • Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near shoreline. • Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes. • While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources. • Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve. • For your safety, as well as the safety of your family and pets.
KEEP YOUR DISTANCE! If you have an issue with an alligator, please call: Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073 or Nancy Clark at 321-292-1434. These ladies are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc. that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street. Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!
CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules: • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have. • Tie bags together if they are all light in weight. • Place trash within 1 foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park. • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.
Service Animal Rules
According to Florida Statues under Social Welfare, Chapter 413, Section 08, Paragraph D - “Service Animal” means an animal that is trained to perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The tasks may include, but are not limited to, guiding a person who is visually impaired or blind, alerting a person who is deaf or hard of hearing, pulling a wheelchair, assisting with mobility or balance, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, retrieving objects, or performing other special tasks. A service animal is not a pet. Only Service Animals are allowed in TGO buildings, no other animals are permitted. Please obey the signs.

Parrottrek - Meet Frank and Suzy Whitmore If you’ve lived in TGO for any amount of time, chances are you already know Frank and Suzy Whitmore. They have been a fixture in the park for over 15 years, first using their Windsong lot, and now their Coach Club port as a homebase when not traveling. They are originally from the Santa Ynez area in California where, in 1996, they purchased and operated Antonio’s Pizza restaurant in Buellton. It became the “go to” eatery for both locals and tourists alike, and after nine years (to the day they bought it) they sold Antonio’s and started their full time adventure of living in a motorhome. Frank and Suzy were married in 1997 while still managing the restaurant. Along the way they acquired Bradley, an African Gray parrot, Abbey, a Severe Macaw, and then Cody, a Greenwing Macaw, who have become their lifelong traveling companions. There aren’t too many birds who can claim they have been to all 48 of the contiguous states and visited over 500 plus RV parks Their first RV was a Lance camper they purchased in 1998. Then in 2005, when they sold their restaurant, they upgraded to their first Prevost, mainly to help accommodate their fair-feathered parrot family. It wasn’t long before they started working for a merchandising company called Maingate, providing a great opportunity to travel and collect a paycheck. In 2006 they became part of Kenny Bernstein’s NHRA drag racing team, where they handled his corporate hospitality division. It was a gig where they attended 23 races, working for nine months out of the year, all while traveling across the country. It was actually 2004 when they purchased their RV lot on Windsong, but they didn’t start using it until 2006 when, during the racing off-season, they would hang out in Florida. In 2009, Suzy got her Massage Therapy license and provided a great service for many of us while at TGO.

They retired from the Bernstein gig in 2010 and headed back to California to help their dads as both of their mothers had recently passed. Their traveling bug returned and in late 2010 they headed back to Florida, spending some time in the Keys and then returning to TGO. Frank was bored so he got his real estate license and eventually worked for TGO Realty. Suzy worked on her massage business and served as a waitress at The Plantation House, now known as the Blue Heron. They did another stint with Maingate in 2013 and then in 2014 went to work for Good Sam. They were referred to Good Sam by Dan and Flo Kleine, former Good Sam reps who also live in TGO. This new position presented another great opportunity to travel the country and to return to their TGO home for part of the year. Their job with Good Sam is basically meeting with RV park owners to sell advertising for the massive Good Sam travel guide, their rapidly growing website service and travel app. They also evaluate the RV parks they attend, and yes - they are the ones who help determine if you have a 10-10-10 park - which TGO is proud to be one. Each Good Sam rep is assigned a territory and Frank and Suzy’s first territory was the northeastern states of New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maine. The following year they were assigned Nevada and Montana. Then central California in 2016. The next three years were basically all west coast states where they repped the Good Sam brand. In 2021 they were assigned the northern and central Florida region. It has, for sure, allowed them to spend more time here at TGO and still helps feed their ferocious traveling appetite. Their Good Sam busy months run usually from March/April through July/August. Then they’re off again for their personal adventures. Frank and Suzy have now been RV warriors for over 17 years. Back in 2005 when they started, the internet was not the valuable tool we all appreciate today. They relied on a trucker atlas, the Next Exit book and Trailer Park Life to help them navigate the highways and back roads. Continued...

Parrottrek - Meet Frank and Suzy Whitmore You can only imagine, after traveling over 250,000 miles in an RV, you might have a few stories and some advise, especially for those just starting out. Here are a few of their thoughts and a bit of advice. Some memories: The Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico was a spectacular sight. Lucked into sitting at a bar in Nantucket with relatives of the Kennedys who were drinking magnums of champagne, which they were sharing. Attending the National Rodeo Finals in Las Vegas. Standing on a wing of an F15 while at Nellis AFB. Became debt free in 2008 using the Dave Ramsey program and blew up our credit cards with a shotgun. Spoke with Dave on the phone, hollering our debt-free independence while touring his facility in Brentwood, TN Advise on states: California is fun and you can drive there in any season. Every state has its own beauty - see them all. Florida is our favorite. There is so much to do here. About some of the RV parks they have visited: Hard to pick a favorite. We have probably visited over 2,500 parks and stayed in about 500 of those. We enjoy staying at Reunion Lake in Louisiana, Flying Flags in Solvang, CA, Ennis RV Village near Yellowstone. And of course, TGO is the best park. Traveling with parrots: Cody was on national TV. There was a rain delay at a race in Charlotte, NC, and the ESPN guy was filming Cody and he puts his claw up and said “gimme four” which became the opening shot of the race. Cody has his own YouTube channel sharing his adventures. We custom built cages for them to live in our motorhome. Remember, they will most likely out live you, so make plans to have them taken care of after you’re gone. Tips for getting into RVing: Don’t be afraid to start. Love who you are traveling with. If possible, have no debt. Map out an idea of where you want to go. Slow down when traveling. Live your life as if you were at home. Visit the small, out of the way places. Learn to not be afraid to stop at the dives and hole-in-the walls.

People thought we were nuts, we had just turned 30, quit our jobs and hit the road. We did it backwards. We lived in our first motorhome for a month while parked in our driveway so we would know what we needed to survive on the road. The person who bought our restaurant thought we were crazy, “everyone wants to own a restaurant!” We went back a year later to borrow something and he said, “You can have the whole damn restaurant.”

Fishing the TGO lakes is a popular hobby for many of us and our visitors. It’s always good to know the rules. Here they are...
26
1. Fishing is allowed from all Common Properties, except from the golf course side of lakes or other waterways. 2. Maps are available in the CSA Office showing access to the lakes from the Common Properties. Private property may not be crossed for fishing without the owner’s consent. 3. All fishing is catch and release; fish must be retrieved and released quickly and handled gently. 4. No nets or casting of nets is permitted for fishing purposes. Only small nets may be used to aid in the retrieval of fish from a fishing line. 5. Because of safety concerns due to the presence of alligators, all children must be accompanied by a responsible adult while fishing. 6. Fishing hours are from sunrise to sunset. 7. The use of live bait, except worms, is prohibited. 8. Only barb-free hooks may be used. 9. Wading into any lake or other waterway for fishing or any other purpose is prohibited.

Close To Home Getaway
- Fort DeSoto, Florida
Fort DeSoto Park - St. Petersburg Fort DeSoto is a Pinellas County Park that is approximately 150 miles from TGO in St. Petersburg. It is the largest park within the Pinellas County Park System and consists of 1,136 acres made up of five interconnected islands (keys). Fort DeSoto is on Mullet Key. These five keys are home to beach plants, mangroves, wetlands, palm hammocks, native plants and hardwoods that each play a role in the preservation and protection of the natural environment. In addition, there have been more than 328 species of birds documented over 60 years by ornithologists. The beaches also provide refuge to the Loggerhead Sea Turtles whose females nest here. The beach is spectacular! Fort DeSoto was named America’s Top Beach in 2009 Trip Advisor. It certainly is filled By Robin Francis with beauty and diversity. There are over seven miles of waterfront at Fort DeSoto which includes almost three miles of white, sandy beach. There are picnic shelters, two fishing piers, a fantastic dog park, miles of paved trails that are wonderful for bike riding or walking, boat launch areas, canoe trails, food concessions and ferry services to some of the other nearby islands in addition to the beautiful beach areas. It’s also a great area to find Sand Dollars!
use a remodel job) and laundry facilities are also available. Reservations are required. They are available to be booked up to six months in advance. You have to keep trying as they can be difficult to get! Another recommendation is do not come if the Red Tide is bad. We came last year during red tide and had to leave due to the dead fish and the smell. They completely refunded our visit. The only WiFi available is in and around the store and office area near the front of the campground. Internet service at our campsite was satisfactory on our Verizon service. The beach is located approximately three miles from the campground. What was disappointing to me was that the beach area does not open until 7:00 am as I like to arrive at the beach around 6:00 am! It also closes at sunset. Pets and bicycles are allowed in the campground and on the beach sidewalk areas, however, they are not allowed on the beach. We would highly recommend this beautiful Florida county park. It is located close to St. Petersburg, which has a variety of museums, annual festivals, concerts, sporting events and cultural events. The Indian Mound Trail It was a beautiful day to explore another one of TGO’s trail, so we grabbed Betty Salter and Karri Conover and headed out for the Indian Mound Trail. The trailhead is located at the southeast corner of the nature center trail. We entered the trail on a firebreak that separates a slightly elevated hammock from the marsh. We followed the firebreak until we found the double red rectangular blazes on a palm tree and then followed those into the hammock. The rectangular blazes denote the main trail and this is important because the trail has two spurs, which are marked by red diamonds. After we entered the hammock, Betty pointed out a palm with two 90-degree angles. The tree had fallen, but its root ball was intact and it continued to live. The first 90-dgree turn occurred as the tree worked around an obstacle and the second happened as the tree starting reaching for the sunlight. This may be one of the oldest living trees in the area. We came across many varieties of plants on the trail, including Coreopsis, which is Florida’s state flower, Milkweed, Mock Bishopsweed, Giant Leather Fern, Orange Milkwort, Butterfly Orchids, Starrush, Soda Apple (looks like tomatoes with super spiny leaves and stalks), Climbing Dayflower, Prairie False Foxglove, and Saltmarsh Sabatia. We used the ‘Picture This’ app to confirm the names of the flowers. In the heart of the mound we found the Simpson Stopper tree. The leaves from these trees have been used by the indigenous people as a cure for diarrhea. When the Spaniards landed in Florida, they were suffering from this ailment and the Indians helped cure them by using a tea from the Stopper tree. This variety of Stopper tree was named for Charles Torrey Simpson, a botanist and conservationist. We also came across a small grove of Papaya trees that are fruit bearing during the summer and fall. About a half mile into the walk, we headed south

out of the hammock on a small trail, and into the wide open marsh area of the St. Johns River Water Management area. Although this is not a true Indian Mound, archeologists have determined that this area was probably a seasonal campsite for hunters and gathers. The Indian Mound Trail crosses two other trails, the Pisarz and the Karen Earley. The Pisarz Trail is marked with white blazes and the Karen Earley Trail is marked with yellow blazes. We will walk these trails in Butterfly Orchid the future. The entire loop is about a mile long. There are lots of differnt plants and plenty of small butterflies that are fun to try and identify. Indian Mound Trail is an easy to moderate trail which may be walked year-round. There are muddy areas, however, after a heavy rain. The day we went there were lots of mosquitos, so bug spray would be a good idea. Sunscreen is also a good idea.
Yaupon Holly
The only naturally occurring caffeine tree in North America, Ilex vomitoria, Yaupon Holly can be found on some of our trails in TGO. Yaupon can be found from coastal North Carolina south and west to Texas. It is a coastal plant that likes sandy soils. Yaupon Tea, also known as cassina, cacina, or black drink, has been consumed on this continent since long before Europeans arrived here. Yaupon Tea Recipe - Ingredients • 1 to 1.5 teaspoons yaupon leaves, fresh, dried, parched or roasted (or one Yaupon tea bag) plus 1 cup water Instructions • Boil water and pour into a cup with loose yaupon leaves, tea ball, or tea bag. • Let steep for five to ten minutes and remove the tea ball or strain out the leaves. Notes Use fresh or dried yaupon leaves for a tea that tastes more like green tea or use parched or roasted leaves for a smokier tea that tastes more like yerba maté. WARNING: The red berries of the yaupon holly are poisonous!

Help Us Name This Handsome Critter...
We have a new addition to the Nature Center Porch. We would love to have everyone come and see him. The only thing is we need a name for him. I am inviting the community to come see him. Think of a great name and we will see who comes up with the best one (one name per person). If the name chosen has multiple entries, then a drawing will be held. The winner will get a dozen homemade chocolate chip cookies (to be delivered only in TGO). The name will be chosen in the Fall to give everyone a chance to choose a name. Send your entry to Sandy Juba at sjubatgo@gmail.com or drop in the box in the Nature Center porch. He used to sit next to the Addison Canal. I wish to thank Michele Lagalo, who completely refurbished him and made him the most handsome critter in the park. 38

The Safe Room
by Ed Brown
How can you build or modify your home to afford you greater protection from Florida’s worst weather abnormalities, the Hurricane and Tornado? What equipment should you stock to help insure your family’s SURVIVAL? It was a “Safe Room!” built as a wood-framed room inside a large closet or separate bedroom; it was a room within a room with a solid wood framed and finished ceiling just below the room’s normal inside ceiling. It had a solid door with impressively strong hinges and two equally strong dead bolts to secure the room from inside. There were two heavy duty hasps on the door, ready for locks, so that the Safe Room might be secured as a “STRONG ROOM” for keeping valuables safe from theft. Shelves and storage spaces lined the secondary walls. Sockets for electrical services were built in as were GFIs. Two different builders were building this Safe Room in 10% of their new construction in New Smyrna Beach in 2010. I love the concept of a Safe Room in a Florida home. Why did this Safe Room Concept not catch on? I have some thoughts on this. 1. A developer or realtor could lose the sale by introducing Storm Danger and “Safety” to a potential buyer new to Florida, who never really thought of hurricane season or tornadoes. 2. A Safe Room could increase building cost by 10% or 20%. 3. There is no guarantee that a Safe Room can insure Safety, but it could stimulate liability on the part of the builder or seller if it doesn’t provide what it was advertised to do in a Hurricane! A first floor interior room (no windows), like a pantry, can be repurposed as a Safe Room. That room should include canned food with a good can opener and freeze dried food for variety. Have a way of heating water for reconstituting the freeze dried food. Also, paper plates, plastic utensils and plastic garbage bags. Don’t forget bottled water for drinking, cooking, hygiene, and pets too. Consider occupant waste storage. (A 5-gallon plastic paint bucket, with a snug lid, lined with a heavy duty plastic bag could be your toilet. Don’t forget toilet paper! In addition, a yoga pad, a pillow and blanket for each Safe Room occupant, a battery-powered weather radio and charger to keep track of storm progress and, of course, your smart phone. In the event of a building collapse that traps you and the family in the Safe Room, have appropriate tools for digging out. Add a rescue whistle to attract rescuers. The same tools will help you support safe recovery of your neighbors!

Feature articles focusing on TGO resident photographers - by Jim Brubaker Today I am writing to you from beautiful remote Drummond Island in the northern reaches of Lake Huron, a stone’s throw from the shores of Canada and not far from Lake Superior, the graveyard of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The sunny, cool morning air is filled with the sounds of the loon, the geese, and the lighthouse foghorn as the morning mist drifts in.
Betsy Seaman 1820-1896 Betsy Seaman, first permanent woman settler on Drummond Island, came here in 1853 with her husband, Daniel Murray Seaman, and their family. “Courageously they wrought, Joyously they lived”
In past articles I have told you of individual TGO photographers. First Robin Frances, followed by Jennifer Lopata, Doug Jensen, David Spahn, and Ed Swan. But in this article, I want to focus on YOU - I want to help. You may not know you need help, but I want to help you anyway - read on, you will find out what I am talking about. I spent over half my life living in places that are difficult to get to. First in a community known as Shade Creek in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania, then Block Island, 12 miles out to sea off the coast of Rhode Island, then Stonewall, Texas, next door to Luckenbach, the little spot made famous by Willie Nelson’s song, and then onto Drummond Island with a fort made famous in the war of 1812. In each of these islands and small communities, your indigenous neighbors, who were born and raised there, really know their community and they know their neighbors on a first-name basis.
48
After her husband’s death in 1863, she brought up their eleven children under difficult pioneer conditions, giving them, without aid of school or church, the cultural background, as far as possible, that she had enjoyed in her childhood home in Canada. Their idealism, helpfulness and hospitality have become the tradition of Drummond Island. In loving memory of Betsy Seaman and her life of service, this memorial is dedicated. Presented to the township of Drummond by her granddaughter, Nona Butterfield Lewis
They are a proud special people. Their history is part of them. The history of their island is ingrained in their soul. For example, here on Drummond they know about Betsy Seaman, the first woman settler on the Island. She was brought here by her husband Danial, who died, and left Betsy to raise, single handedly, a dozen young ones on that remote island in the 1800’s. Or in Shade Creek, you know about Abe Brubaker
who, at his wife’s funeral, rode his horse up to the horse drawn wagon that carried her casket and shouted, “Slow down - Anna does not like to ride fast.” Or living on the Atlantic island of Block Island, you know how the whole island population came out to rescue the crew of a shipwrecked schooner on the southeast corner of the island’s rocky sea and then used the lumber from the wreckage to build the first church on the island. Or in Stonewall, Texas, you know how the fast talking land promoters convinced 50 folks to travel from Germany to settle in what they thought was a copy of their lush German valley and how they survived anyway by making peace with the Comanche who claimed the promoted land as their own. In each of these islands, the indigenous people know their community’s fiber, they knew its history. They know that history is what makes them special, what makes their island community special. Now let me get to the subject of the article, “Helping you!” Your TGO land-locked-Island community is special, and I want to help you to really know your TGO island. I want you to study the photographs available to learn the history and get to know the people of TGO. Really know your island through photos and their stories. First, go to the Lorraine Murphy Historical Center and study the thousands of photos that Lorraine has assembled for you. Read the stories they tell. Become part of TGO’s history. Then, I want you to talk about your trip to the History Center at your next condo party.

The new TGO Magazine will be available this summer. Second, I want to help you really know TGO today. I want each of you to pick up a copy of TGO Realty’s annual magazine. Do not just throw it down on your coffee table. Study the hundreds of photos that TGO photographers snapped for its pages. They tell a story I want you to know. Learn why people come to TGO and stay a life time. Become part of the fabric of TGO. Let those photos tell you the fabric of TGO - let them help make you proud to be a TGOer. I want you to share your study of the magazine and the photographs that you saw at your next condo party, spread the word about what those photographs have to say. In summary, I hope I helped you use the photos in the Historical Center and in the Magazine, to really get to know your TGO. Your community is 33 years old and 3,000 acres small. Did you know that? I urge you to go get all the facts. Get to really know your island community through the photos, stories, and history. In future issues of Snap-Shot I will tell you of more TGO photographers that spread the word through these and the many other forms of TGO media. Help Jim Brubaker shape SNAP-SHOT. Send your tips, ideas, and stories to jimbrubaker@earthlink.net

The Very Valuable, Vital, Vulture Known as “Nature’s Custodians,” our vultures, the Black Vulture and the Turkey Vulture, clean up and sanitize our ecosystems regularly. By devouring dead animals, they reduce noxious odors none of us want to smell. Their quick removal of the remains reduces the number of other scavengers that reproduce quickly such as rats, insects and other wildlife, thereby reducing the potential for the spread of diseases such as anthrax, tuberculosis, and rabies. Vultures are actually very clean considering what and how they eat. With no feathers on their heads, they do not pick up a lot of bacteria. They can be seen with wings stretched out and heads high, using ultraviolet rays from the sun to kill any bacteria they pick up. They cool down by defecating on their own legs. The high uric acid content of the urine acts as a sanitizer as well. Black Vulture
Vultures often sit and spread their wings in one spot for hours to sunbathe, surprisingly. The sun helps vultures keep their feathers healthy by causing parasites to converge in areas where birds can more easily get rid of them. On especially chilly days, sunbathing can also help warming up when wet or cold. Black Vultures have white feathers on the tips of their wings, Turkey Vultures do not, but they do have a bald red head, the two key features that set them apart.
We have two species of vultures here in TGO, the Black Vulture and the Turkey Vulture. The Turkey Vulture is larger with a bald red head and a wingspan of 6’. The smaller Black Vulture has a bald black or gray head and a wingspan of just 5’. Black Vultures have been known to take small or weak animals, but Turkey Vultures are known to be less aggressive and feed on carcasses 12 to 24 hours old and even eat vegetation and insects. A group of Black Vultures will nudge out the Turkey Vultures to take first choice on a carcass. I once watched as
54
- By Betty Salter
a first-year eagle was feastTurkey Vulture ing on a carcass and two Black Vultures stood about 5 to 10 feet away waiting their turn. So, though they have no qualms pushing the Turkey Vultures around, they won’t mess with even a young eagle. Neither Turkey nor Black Vultures have vocal organs. They do not sing or call, but hiss when alarmed or threatened and grunt when courting or hungry. When threatened Black Vultures let loose from both ends, regurgitating and defecating such a foul-smelling concoction that other creatures flee the scene, while a Turkey Vulture can hurl vomit up to 10’ away, distracting and confusing any predator. What do we call a group of vultures? It depends on what they are doing. A group of vultures roosting or sunning is a bolt or venue. When a group is eating, it is a wake. When the vultures take to the wing and begin circling to ride the air currents, we call them a kettle. These terms apply to all vultures. When watching a mixed kettle of vultures most often you will see the Black Vultures higher up in the kettle. The Turkey Vultures have a very keen sense of smell while the Black Vulture relies more on sight, often simply following the Turkey Vultures to the carcass. Vultures do not detect impending death but are attracted to the scent of mercaptan the gas that is released as a dead animal begins to decay. “In the US it illegal to take, kill, or possess Turkey Vultures, their eggs, and any body parts including but not limited to their feathers; violation of the law is punishable by a fine of up to $100,000 for individuals or $200,000 for organizations, and/or a prison term of one year.” The Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 protects Black Vultures and more than 800 other bird species, making it illegal to kill them without a federal authorization Here’s to the clean up crew who are so vital to the health of our ecosystems… our very valuable vultures. Thank you for keeping our environment safe for us, our pets and the wildlife we love!
Vulture Fun Facts For Your Next Dinner Party...
Vultures lack the powerful feet that are characteristic of other raptors like eagles and hawks. They have long toes with blunted talons, which are easier for walking. Turkey Vultures will often place one or both feet on their food when eating; Black Vultures typically do not use their feet when feeding. Vultures have long, hooked bills that are designed for tearing pieces of food. Vultures lack feathers on their heads so that they can more easily keep themselves clean when eating. Vultures will often insert their head completely inside the carcass they are cleaning up. Black Vultures are “family-oriented” birds - they feed their young for up to eight months after their young have fledged and often stay together in family groups. Vultures have excellent senses of sight and smell to help them locate food, and they can find a dead animal from a mile or more away. Because of this, vultures often have large territories and spend a lot of time soaring to locate their next meal. It is a myth that vultures circle dying animals waiting to feed. Although they can sniff out a dead critter over a mile away, contrary to belief, they can not predetermine if something is about to die - so when you see them roosting on the roof of your house, don’t worry Vultures have keen eyesight. It is believed they are able to spot a three-foot carcass from four miles away on the open plains. Turkey Vultures can swoop up to 60 mph in order to avoid being “mobbed” by ravens or jays whose nests they just raided.
Black Vulture Length: 22–29 inches Weight: 3.5 to 6.6 lb. Wingspan: 52–66 inches Lifespan: 25 years Dark gray bald head Body feathers mostly glossy black Tip of wings white Legs and feet grayish-white Tail short and wedge-shaped In flight wings straight across
Vultures have excellent eyesight, but, like most other birds, they have poor vision in the dark. That’s why you see them resting on the TGO water tower each evening. Vultures eat dead animals, and because of that, they taste awful. The rotten meat that vultures eat infuses bacteria into their bodies. These decomposing bacteria release toxic chemicals that make Vultures meat not edible There is a 90% chance that a Black Vulture has feasted on your trash bag here in TGO.
Turkey Vulture Length: 24–32 inches Weight: 1.8 to 5.3 lb. Wingspan: 63–72 inches Lifespan: 20 years Small red head with few to no feathers Body feathers brownish-black Trailing edge of wing silvery or gray Legs and feet pink usually stained white Tail rectangular In flight wings in a “V” shape Some of you might recall Ol’ Stumpy, who was one of our local gators that unfortunately was missing most of one leg - due to an argument with a larger gator. Not sure how Stumpy died, but one day, there he was - buzzard bait! Stumpy was a prime example of how valuable our vultures are in the clean up process to keep our environment safe. Some days you would fine 50-60 vultures feasting away and the next day there would be only a few stopping in for a snack. It took several days for the cleaning crew to complete their job, and when they did, there was barely enough left of Stumpy to make a belt.

What your neighbors are saying... “Tom and Shelley are experts in the hearing field. they know what they are talking about and back up what they sell. Good product, excellent service, highly recommended.” – PS “My wife and I visited Contentment Hearing Care because of recommendations by others in our community. The facility environment was friendly, convenient, and inviting. Tom Contento, explained about hearing loss and why something should be done to improve hearing to prevent or lessen some of the side effects of continuing hearing impairment. A series of tests were performed to determine the nature and types of hearing loss and the results were thoroughly explained to us in layman's terms, which made it very easy to understand and to make decisions. We are extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend Contentment Hearing Care to others.” — GJ
