Golf play is so efficiently organized that an 18-hole round averages just under four hours. The golf staff is of the highest caliber and offers quality instruction, a junior academy, women’s golf association, men’s league, senior men’s league, club cleaning and storage, a fully equipped locker room, golf carts, social golf events and tournaments. Available for practice are a driving range with target greens, three putting complexes, two practice holes and one short-range chipping hole. The Pro Shop is a showcase of the latest golf clothing, equipment and accessories at a very competitive member price.

Over 100 years after the Club first opened, members of RVCC still play the original course layout (with some changes and improvements) and have also added nine holes making Rogue Valley Country Club the only course in the area offering both an 18-hole course and a nine-hole course from which to choose. Players can choose from four tee options on either the 18-hole “Rogue Course”or the nine-hole “Oaks Course.” The nine-hole course is also set up perfectly for families and beginners with an additional “par 3”style layout allowing the Oaks course to have five tee options. Couples and families find the Oaks Course a great benefit to membership. The course is rarely crowded and has a layout that allows you to play just a few holes at a time or all nine. Another benefit of the additional nine holes is the course is only closed for member play twice per year. At RVCC, you’ll always have a place to play. Southern Oregon Golf Championships The Southern Oregon Golf Championships have been held at Rogue Valley Country Club every Labor Day weekend since 1929 with one exception in 1994 when renovation of the golf course was underway. The tournament was originally called the Northern California/Southern Oregon Golf Open and was open only for men. Only a handful of men competed that first year. In 1937, a women’s division was added. From these rather modest beginnings, the tournament is now a prestigious amateur tournament with over 400 participants with separate divisions for men, junior/senior men, senior men, super senior men, women and senior women. The Southern Oregon Golf Championships is the largest Amateur Match-Play tournament held on a single course in the United States. Each player receives at least four rounds of golf flighted by score and handicap. Entry fee includes tickets to four cocktail and hors d’oeuvre parties and live entertainment. There is also a putting contest with a $2,000 grand prize. The SOGC limits the number of entries to only 416 players, so we encourage you to sign up early and make your travel plans now! The entertainment for the evenings includes everything from DJ-spun music, rock and roll, and lively disco to Elvis, Cher, Tina Turner and other impersonations. The dance floor is open to strut your stuff! The cocktail hour features the always popular Grape Cooler, a secret blend that has become an SOGC tradition. The food served during the cocktail hour ranges from fresh fruit, cheeses and salads to delicious finger foods. And, if you haven’t had enough golf during the day, you can try your skill on the putting green. For every hole-in-one you get during the practice rounds, you get one try for the grand prize during the Saturday night finale.

History The game of golf first arrived in the Rogue Valley in the fall of 1910. It was brought here by a group of wealthy young businessmen who had played the game in the East. The young men, and orchardists from around the Rogue Valley, organized the Medford Golf and Country Club. An elaborate grand opening was scheduled for June 30, 1911, at a property on Hillcrest Road just east of Medford. The country club included tennis courts, a skeet range and nine holes of golf. The clubhouse featured a veranda garden. “From these heights, the valley sweeps away,” wrote the Mail Tribune newspaper.“Dotted with homes, orchards, fields of grain… it is beautiful!” Yet, despite many activities the Medford Golf and Country Club struggled financially and closed a short time later. The country club moved to a smaller site a few miles away in August of 1912. This new property was donated by Conro Fiero, a wealthy apple orchardist, and his wife Grace, a Broadway actress, to be used as a golf course. This new course had nine holes and held many inter-city golf and tennis matches. But, once again, the Medford Golf and Country Club had to close its doors due to financial difficulty in 1917. In 1923, the Rogue Valley Golf Association was formed and it bought 70 acres of land where the original Medford Golf and Country Club was located on Hillcrest Road. H. Chandler Egan, a local orchardist and nationally recognized amateur golfer, was selected as the course architect. Egan considered the land ideal because of the interesting terrain, attractive shade trees and plenty of water nearby. Egan donated his services to the new club and he was called the “driving spirit” behind the project. The Rogue Valley Country Club was one of Egan’s first designs. With only nine holes at first, membership was limited to 100 people and applications came in rapidly from people in Medford as well as Ashland, Grants Pass and Portland. On May 3, 1924, the Rogue Valley Country Club was opened for play. Egan went on to design another nine holes at RVCC, which we now refer to as the “original course.” Now with 27 holes, Rogue Valley Country Club has grown into a firstclass golf facility with beautiful, mature landscaping and challenging holes. - fourteen -
