Giving Tree

It’s that time of year again where RVCC Members help make Christmas morning very special for foster children in our area. We are teaming up with the Jackson County Foster Parent Association for the Giving Tree. Trees will be located in the Clubhouse Entry, the Grill, and the Pro Shop decorated with ornaments from foster children. Each ornament has a “Christmas Wish” listed on it. To participate, take an ornament from a tree, purchase the gift and return it unwrapped with the ornament attached to the RVCC Administration office by Friday, December 18. If you prefer to give money, slip your cash or check into the locked box at the Reception Desk. Each year RVCC has featured the Giving Tree, we have been able to grant every wish on the tree. Here’s to another year of spreading holiday cheer and improving the quality of life for children involved in the foster care system!

RVCC Golf News Age Shooter On October 15, Dan Dixon was playing with Ron Lewis, Terry Anderson and Mike Galante when he shot a 3 under par 69. This is not only significant because he was under par, but it is also his age. Great round Dan, I am sure there will be many more to come. Pro Shop Credits December 31, 2015 will be your last chance to spend your pro shop credits. Any credits you have earned in 2015 that are on the books will need to be spent. If you have a gift card or vouchers they will carry into 2016. Special Holiday Hours The golf shop will be closed on Christmas Day. We will take tee times for Sunday the 27th on Thursday the 24th. You will have to phone the golf shop to reserve a tee time. Any questions please contact the golf shop. 2016 Course Usage Schedule The new course usage schedule for the golf course is being prepared for 2016. Any tournament or committee scheduling their events for next year should contact Tracy for inclusion in the schedule. We will have this concluded in February so we can get the schedule approved and published as soon as possible in 2016. Thank you. Lessons as Gifts Lessons for your special golfer are a great gift idea. They make a terrific holiday gift or stocking stuffer. Our experienced staff of golf professionals are available to help any player enjoy the game and play better. These certificates may be used anytime next year and are available in the Golf Shop. Winter Rule I’m sure we all have noticed the growing number of deer on the golf course. During the winter months, the maintenance staff is not able to maintain the bunkers on a daily basis. This has created some very unfair lies in our bunkers. After consulting with the PGA Northwest Section we have decided to adopt a new winter rule:

Relief from Deer Track in Bunker In a bunker, a ball that has come to rest in a deer track may be lifted, without penalty, and dropped as near as possible to where it lay but not nearer the hole. The ball may not be cleaned and must remain in the bunker.

4 - RVCC Club Bulletin - December 2015

Rules of Golf Rule 14-1b - Anchoring the Ball Rule 14-1b focuses only on the method of stroke; it does not limit the conforming equipment that may be used. In making a stroke, the player must not anchor the club, either “directly” or by use of an “anchor point.” Note 1: The club is anchored “directly” when the player intentionally holds the club or a gripping hand in contact with any part of his body, except that the player may hold the club or a gripping hand against a hand or forearm. Note 2: An “anchor point” exists when the player intentionally holds a forearm in contact with any part of his body to establish a gripping hand as a stable point around which the other hand may swing the club. Penalty: Match Play – Loss of Hole; Stroke Play – Two strokes The proposed Rule change would take effect on January 1, 2016, in accordance with the regular four-year cycle for changes to the Rules of Golf.

The Lesson Tee The leaves are doing their incredible fall change, the temperatures are in the perfect range, the golf course is about as perfect as we’re going to get, and preferred lies...who could ask for more? But alas, we all know what’s just around the corner. With the promise of an “El Nino” winter ahead (do they really know what they’re talking about?) what will our off-season golf hold for us hearty souls? I can’t speak for all, but I’m planning some golf stuff. After all, this is when we get ready for the upcoming season. Here are some thoughts, announcements and reminders as we make this annual transition. Winter Short Game Sessions Typically the ladies have utilized this program but we will not exclude by gender. These are short game sessions for two or three golfers at the time of your choice...scheduled like an individual lesson. We can work on the short game aspect of your choice and do our best to avoid the inclement days. Those who have done this in the past have really enjoyed the improvement and the time spent. One-hour sessions are $20 each for trios and $30 each for twosomes. If you are looking for someone to pair with, feel free to give me a call. Indoor Launch Monitor Hitting Studio Improvements The indoor hitting “cage” in the back of the pro shop is getting continued improvements for use this winter. The Flightscope X2 provides incredible golf swing and ball flight

feedback that continues to amaze us professionals in club fitting and swing improvement. Skeptics be alerted, this is a big part of the future and present of teaching. Winter Gear I made a classic blunder in our Ladies Pro Am...I was unprepared for the weather. By #9 I was soaked. Check your winter gear now! RVCC Men’s Bandon Dunes Winter Getaway As of this bulletin, you should have heard all about, and hopefully signed up for, our Bandon trip scheduled for early March. The Dunes courses are all highly ranked and present a unique challenge. Check with me or Tracy for remaining availability. Preferred Lies or “Winter Rules” Try only “bumping” the ball if you absolutely must! This will improve your ability to hit from any situation. Maybe even make a rule within your group to improve only in the fairway...just a thought. By the way, mud on the ball is a reason to at least clean before you hit. It’s amazing how much a clump of mud can affect the flight of a golf ball. Keep dry, keep warm and keep playing!

Grounds Report The last month of 2015 is here and what a rewarding year it has been. The year was ushered in with above average temperatures and that trend continued throughout the year and as it looks now, Medford will surpass last year’s record of warmest year on record. So, what that means is we’ve just endured the two warmest years on record in a two year span, and we all survived!! The summer was plain and simply…hot, with no other way to say it. You can imagine how excited I was when we got our first good rain of the season (although the participants in the Ladies Pro-Am weren’t so excited about it). Last irrigation season, 2014, we dealt with a mandatory 25% reduction of irrigation water and this year was 30%, so I would like to say THANK YOU to the membership for your cooperation with the water shortage we have had to deal with. Here’s to a wet and snowy winter!! This winter we will continue to prune trees as needed, and work on mistletoe removal as well. We will try to prune as many key trees as possible; this is a slow and vital process to the continued health of our beautiful RVCC trees.

Additionally, we will continue to remove any cottonwood trees remaining on the course. Cottonwoods have terrible root systems and play havoc on our mowers and drainage systems. Barring any storms or noticeable decline in existing trees, the cottonwoods will be the main focus on removals. Your maintenance staff will continue the maintenance practice of leveling tees this winter and spring. We have improved many tees the past few winters, and we will continue to improve others, with #6 Blue and White, #7 Gold and Black and #14 White. These are our goals, but Mother Nature will dictate if these goals are completed this season. We’ll continue to edge and level irrigation sprinkler heads around the course; this is a never ending practice as these heads settle, move and become overgrown on a constant basis. The sand topdressing we apply also causes the heads to settle as well.

Nature on the course: A deer checks out the bunker on hole 15. Make sure to read the rule regarding deer tracks in bunkers on page 4.

Nature on the course: This bear print was found on the Hillcrest practice green. Keep an eye out when playing in the early morning or late afternoon.

Ingredients for Dressing 1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar 1 teaspoon fresh parsley 2 tablespoons honey Salt and pepper to taste 1/3 cup toasted hazelnuts, roughly chopped 1/3 cup hazelnut oil

Directions

In a blender mix all ingredients until smooth. On low speed, slowly drizzle hazelnut oil through the lid into the mixer until the dressing begins to thicken.

We are pleased to announce the hiring of our new dinner Sous Chef, Brandon Armstrong. Brandon has relocated to the Rogue Valley from Portland, Oregon where he was Chef de Cuisine of Uptown Billiards Club. He obtained his culinary degree from Le Cordon Bleu in San Francisco. Club Happenings Happy Members are a Great Investment “Keeping a little ahead of conditions is one of the secrets of business; the trailer seldom goes far.” -Charles M. Schwab Years ago, after graduating college, my first boss gave me a piece of advice I have always carried with me. He told me, “Your best advertisement is your current customer.” I appreciated the advice, but as a typical twenty-something-year-old at the time, I did not truly comprehend its meaning until I began to see the real world application behind the phrase. How often would you say you are influenced by a friend’s experience? In a recent article, Forbes reports 92% of consumers believe recommendations from friends and family over all forms of advertising (Forbes, 2014). Furthermore, a survey conducted by WOMMA and the American Marketing Association (AMA) found 64% of marketing executives indicated they believe word of mouth is the most effective form of marketing. Interestingly enough, only 6% say they have mastered it (Forbes). This information proves to me what I have already found to be true in my own experiences; keeping your current customer happy is ultimately your best return on investment. To put it simply, happy people stick around, get involved and bring their friends.

The RVCC staff is actively seeking ways to keep our members satisfied while staying relevant in the community. Below I have outlined a few current strategies we have been implementing. If you want to learn more about these topics, please feel free to contact me at any time. • Expanding Social Media Presence • Tennis Membership Preview • Community Partnerships • “Member for a Day” Campaign As I read more about how the recession has negatively impacted private clubs and the golf industry nationwide over the past few years, I am thankful to be here in the Rogue Valley where our city is thriving and our Club has much to offer to the growing population. My goal as your Membership and Marketing Director is to be able to exceed your expectations of your membership at Rogue Valley Country Club (and to generate revenue!). With your help, and the management team’s efforts, I believe we will stay ahead of the game and continue to grow as a club. Here’s to a better and brighter year in 2016!
