From The General Manager On May 1, our new Food & Beverage Manager Bruce Hoevet joined the RVCC family. I’m sure most members who have visited the club dining rooms during the past month have had the opportunity to meet Bruce. He has many years of service experience here in the Valley, most notably the past 19 years as the General Manager of the Rogue Regency Inn. It was through fortunate coincidence that Bruce was able to join the team just as we are preparing for the busiest time of the year at the club. Following the recent approval of the proposed dues increase, some members have questioned the timing of hiring a new management team member. On the surface, it could appear that the increase in dues was being utilized to support additional payroll. However, upon examination of the club’s financial statements, food and beverage net income is not subsidized by dues revenue. Even by filling a position that has been left vacant for quite a while, food and beverage is budgeted to continue to provide a positive revenue stream and profit for the club. Like most private clubs, in the not-so-distant past, food and beverage at RVCC was treated as an amenity and operated at a loss that required dues income to subsidize the cost of operations. By making significant changes, primarily through payroll, food and beverage has recently been operated at a profit. In fact today, with almost $2.2 million of income, food and beverage revenue is projected to be greater than dues income.

One point that was highlighted at the informational membership meetings in April was the fact that even if the dues increase was approved by the membership, additional revenue from banquets as well as other changes to reduce expenses would need to occur. This means that we must be focused on operating more efficiently while continuing to provide the service and value that the membership expects and deserves. Having the right personnel to direct this important operation is one of the keys to the continued success of the food and beverage department at the club. With his knowledge, experience, customer relations skills and contacts within the business community, Bruce will most certainly be a great addition to the club. And ultimately, successful food and beverage operations will provide additional net profit for the club. Be sure to introduce yourself and personally welcome Bruce when you visit the club. See you at your club! Jim Norris, CCM General Manager

RVCC Shoot Out Coming The 2011 Shoot Out will be held this year on June 11 and 12. This tournament was previously called the Men’s Club Invitational and is held to fund the three High School Programs that use RVCC for their home course and practice facility. We encourage all players, both men and women, to participate and/or sponsor this event. The entry fees go to fund the costs of the tournament while ALL the sponsor money goes direct into the funding of the golf programs at North Medford, South Medford and St. Mary’s. The format for the tournament remains the same with a two person best ball on Saturday and a two person scramble on Sunday in two flights both gross and net divisions. There are also KP’s and LD’s each day. The entry fee is $135 per player for the tournament and includes all the prizes and dinner on Sunday after golf. The Saturday shotgun on the 11th is at 1pm on the Rogue Course and the Sunday shotgun is at 1pm also on the Rogue Course. 4 - RVCC Club Bulletin - June 2011

With the shortage of funds in the school budgets the last number of years, this tournament has filled a void in aiding the golf programs for funding. Without this event, the schools would not be able to fund their golf programs!! We encourage your participation as a player or as a sponsor or both. Entry blanks are available in the Golf Shop or from any of the Schools and coaches. We will gladly accept all offers to help support these schools. Call Jim at the Golf Shop for more information on sponsorship. Bag Tags Included in the rules of the club is a requirement that all members shall have an RVCC Bag Tag on their bag. If you do not have one, come on into the Golf Shop and we will issue you a new bag tag with your name on it. Hole in One Club Don’t forget to sign up for the Mens and Womens Hole-in-One club. It costs $2 to sign up and an additional $2 every time someone who is in the Hole-in-One club gets an ace. The benefit comes from when you get your hole-in-one! At that time you receive credit on your bill for the amount in the respective pot. That amounts to about $300 for the men and $150 for the women. Sign up now for your hole-on-one insurance! Callaway Tour Van here June 1 Callaway Golf’s Tour Van will be here on June 1 from 10am to 4pm. This is a great chance for you to try out all the products that Callaway has to offer and purchase it right on the spot! If they do not have it, they will make it during the day in the van. They have all the heads, shafts and grips to make the club that will fit you. What a great deal to have here at RVCC. Please call and make appointments so they can use their time to your advantage. From The Lesson Tee Are you ready? Here it is...the final secrets that will help you play the game the way you want! I’ve been studying the pros on TV and have come up with three simple things they ALL do that allows them to play their best. So here goes...are you ready to play better? 1. Set up perfectly every time! Different sizes in individuals will require some different set up specifics but the basics are the same. Three relationships at setup are essential. Relationship with the club (grip and club position), relationship with the target (alignment of the club face and your feet, knees, hips, shoulders and eyes correctly to the target) and the third relationship, that being to the ball (ball position, posture, distance from the ball, etc.) The importance of a great “foundation”, that being the set up, cannot be overemphasized. The greats all do this part great if not absolutely the same every time. This is something YOU can do every time. Get comfortable with a great setup. 2. ROUTINE. Everything that you do as you approach a shot comes under the category of a PRE-SHOT ROUTINE. If you do it the same way every time you improve your chances of a successful golf shot. A good routine includes...club face to target, feet put in place in the same manner each time, a consistent time frame, the same amount of looks to the target, something to allow you to relax ( a deep breath

followed by a relaxing exhale) and a clear mental image of what you want the ball to do. This routine needs to fit and feel comfortable to YOU. You can use practice sessions to establish and solidify your routine. ...and finally, 3. Make it look and feel easy. Seriously, isn’t that what is most striking about the pros, how “easy” they make it look? They actually practice using a minimal amount of effort. Think about it, after you’ve hit a terrible shot or played a less than stellar round, don’t you have a strong sense of how tired you are or of how much energy that shot seemed to take.“I was trying as hard as I can!”Try soft. Now, don’t you feel better already? I do. Give these thing your attention and play like the pros. P.S. Keep you eyes on the weekly club email for instruction programs coming to a lesson tee near you. Note: Ed Fisher is our resident Golf Instructor. You can contact Ed via e-mail at: fisher_fore@charter.net or call Ed at 541-499-2253.

Grounds Report Grounds Report With the 2011 golf season well under way and aeration of the greens and tees behind us we are focusing a majority of our efforts on the day-to-day maintenance and set up of the golf course. We are hoping that Mother Nature will allow us some reprieve from both the cold temperatures and extremely wet Spring. With the staff reductions and the lack of overtime hours due to the budget restrictions in the golf course maintenance department, very few, if any projects will be considered in the 2011/2012 budget year. With the cooperation from Mother Nature we are planning on having the mounds to the left of Rogue #12 completed with drainage and hydro seeding by June 1. We will continue to verti-cut and sand top-dress the greens every other Monday with cooperation from the course usage schedule and Mother Nature; also we will be applying light amounts of sand topdressing to the tee tops to help keep the thatch in check.

WE BRAND PEOPLE! Lois Malone 541-933-8023 Office 541-261-3884 Cell Lois@MasterStitch.net

Once again we are asking every one to place the bunker rakes OUTSIDE the sand bunkers parallel to play and with the least interference to play. As always we appreciate your help in filling divots with sand and seed. Also if at all possible please fix your ball mark and maybe one or two others. Please don’t forget to rake the sand bunkers, especially for the groups behind you. All of you early morning golfers please try to knock the sand off your shoes when exiting the sand bunker and before walking on the greens. We appreciate everyone’s help in making YOUR golf course a more enjoyable experience for all. As always please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions and or concerns. Thank you and good luck golfing.

Banquet News As the weather warms up, celebrate the season by throwing a oneof-a-kind outdoor party on the East Terrace of the Rogue Valley Country Club. An outdoor setting is great for any gathering of friends, family, neighbors or work associates. Graduation parties, weddings, baby or bridal showers, company picnics, reunions or dancing parties…RVCC offers the most stunning views of the Valley for outdoor gatherings. You can dazzle your guest with a theme filled idea and let the RVCC Executive Chef and staff prepare a meal to remember. Here are some great party theme ideas: Garden Party: Add dry flowers petals to the invitation envelope or decorate with floral stamps and stickers. Choose a floral print pattern for the plates and napkins; mix in solid color cutlery, cups and table cover. For place cards, take a small flower pot and plant seedlings. Label the pot with the name of the seedling and the guest’s name. Tie a ribbon around it. Pool or Beach Party: Create fun and unique invitations by using different items that you can mail, such as a sun block sample (found in drug stores), a pair of sunglasses, or a sun visor. Details of the party can be written on the visor. Decorate with“grass-look”umbrella covers and decorative palm trees. Fill a child’s pool with ice to chill soft drinks. A beach pail makes a great utensil holder at the end of a buffet. July 4th: Roll invitations inside mini flags and mail in an envelope or patriotic colors. Fill with red, white and blue confetti. Decorate your table with patriotic printed plates, napkins, and table covers. Mix in solid color cups and cutlery. Add American flag picks to a cheese tray

or to hors d’oeuvres. Decorate with red, white and blue balloons. Tie red, white and blue bows around the umbrella stands and terrace pergola. Grad Party: Be imaginative! For example, if your graduate is a pizza freak, serve pizza. It is an unusual open house item, and yet the number one most popular food among teenagers. Mix it up by serving some unique gourmet pizzas in addition to the standard favorites, cheese and pepperoni. If your graduate loves desserts, have a dessert party that starts at 7:00pm.; specify “dessert party” on your invitation so people know to eat dinner earlier. A variety of Specialty Desserts can be made by the Executive Chef. Or how about offering sundaes and banana splits? For Facility reservation and information, please contact the RVCC Banquet Department cwilliams@rvcc.com or direct line at 541-842-8189.

Food & Beverage Corner By Elizabeth Cruz Bruce Hoevet - Food and Beverage Manager I would like to thank everyone for the opportunity to be part of this fabulous club. I have been managing full service hotels since 1986 and for the past 19 years at the Rogue Regency Inn and Suites. My goal is to exceed your expectations every time you enter the Club. I look forward to meeting each and every member. June Is Here! Time to bring your friends and family to enjoy a meal and the beautiful view on the terrace which will open for service on June 11. The terrace is a great spot for birthdays, baby showers and any other special occasions for you and your guests. With the terrace opening I want to remind everyone that the Chandler Egan (formal dining) will be closed for dining. Please be sure to make your reservations for the terrace and grill dining to ensure you have a table. Don’t forget to order your Britt box this summer to enjoy with a bottle of wine. Corkage Fee and Wine Tasting Two items reviewed by the House & Wine Committees and the Board of Directors are the Free Wine Tastings and the Wine Corkage Waiver. Many members were under the impression that the wine served at the wine tasting events was donated by the winery. The fact is the club purchases the wine for these events. In order to cover the cost of the wine, a fee of $5 for the monthly tasting was instituted in May. The Wine Corkage Waiver was implemented during the Grill remodel in February 2008 to encourage members to dine at the club during the construction. It was a well-received program by the membership and has remained in place for the past three years. While member dining has increased during the past three years, wine sales have decreased proportionately. In order to continue to provide a membership benefit, a modest corkage fee of $5 will be in effect beginning in May. On Saturday evenings, club members will continue to enjoy the wine corkage waiver when dining at the club.
