WELCOME to The Great Outdoors RV Nature & Golf Resort, Inc. – a community that encompasses just under 3,000 acres. Developed in the mid 1980’s by drug store magnate Jack Eckerd and his son, Brevard County developer Jim Swann, with painstaking care to preserve the trees and natural lay of the land. TGO opened its doors in 1989; and 33 years later the resort offers the lifestyle RV’ers are looking for. Once thought to be just RV sites, it soon became apparent we could offer a variety of lifestyles. And that is where our motto was born – STAY A NIGHT OR A LIFETIME. From renting to owning, TGO has it all: RV sites to custom RV resort homes!
Easy Check In at The Welcome Center.
TGO Realty Thanking The Resort Community
What a great community turnout we had when we host “thank you” BBQs. It was a great time with owners and guests, including renters, who brought their own chairs and were treated to hamburgers and hot dogs compliments of TGO Realty. We served over 500 happy campers during our Welcome Back BBQ and our end of season Going Away BBQ. The photos surely show we all had a great time! You can’t say we don’t have fun here at TGO!

We Salute Our TGO Heroes!
Jim & Ann Brooks
Friday, December 10, 2021, is a day residents of Mayfield, Kentucky will not soon forget. Late in the evening, Mayfield was hit by an EF-4 tornado causing catastrophic damage with estimated peak wind speeds of 190 mph! The town and residents were devastated.
It wasn’t long after that that TGO resident Jim Brooks made this decision: “Our faith made it an easy decision for us to donate our RV to the area so devastated by the tornado. Once our decision was made, we contacted Eagles Pride (TGO’s onsite RV service center) to make sure that our RV, an Airstream 39XL Land Yacht diesel motorhome, was going to be roadworthy and live-in ready for a family desperately needing shelter.” Thanks to Mike Thibeau, owner of Eagles Pride, the motorhome was readied for the trip to Mayfield, and it was fully stocked and ready for the new owner. Mike and his wife, D’anet along with TGO resident Ron &
Dori Peoples delivered the RV to Pastor Wolfgang and his wife into the parking lot of the Cayce First Methodist Church. The picture here shows the front of the church which looks fine, but the back was heavily damaged along with the pastor’s home being destroyed and nothing else standing within a 2 block area. On behalf of Jim and Ann Brooks, thanks goes out to TGO Realty, Eagles Pride RV Service Center, Ron & Dori Peoples and to everyone who contributed gift cards, money, housewares and other supplies. We are so fortunate to have Jim and Ann as a part of our TGO Community!

Overview The Great Outdoors Products
To view all of TGO’s Products, visit tgoresort.com Nancy Merchant, Licensed RE Broker
RV Sites (Rental & Sales) All sites have level concrete pads with
underground utilities. site hookups include water, 30/50 amp service, and sewer. Standard sites are generally 40’x80’ and can be for private use or added to the rental pool. Owners have the option of adding a screen room, storage shed, or an air-conditioned Executive Suite (see our article pg. 9) that boasts a combined living/dining area, full kitchen, bathroom, plus laundry and storage. Sites were designed to back up to nature, golf course, or lake views.
RV Ports (Rental & Sales)
RV port sites include a custom-built shelter for your RV on a concrete pad (Note: Executive Suites are not included in site rental.) with underground utilities and include electricity, telephone and sewer. Most ports also have screened rooms or Executive Suites and offer your RV protection from the elements. This allows you to use your site during inclement or harsh weather conditions. As with RV Sites, the RV Port can be placed into the rental pool when owners are not using them.
Park Homes
Park homes are another lifestyle (Note: Executive Suites are not included in site rental.) available at The Great Outdoors. Besides the park home itself, many have site-built additions which may provide expanded living space, large porches, or extended RV parking complete with full hookups. Similar in style to a “mobile” or “modular” home, park homes are an affordable answer to resort living.
Resort Homes
Site-built custom resort homes may include an attached RV port or garage with full hookups. Many also include covered or enclosed car and golf cart parking. A wide variety of floor plans offer 1 or more bedrooms, many with cathedral ceilings and lofts. These homes offer you the lifestyle of resort home living with the added bonus of having your RV parked under cover right outside your door.

RV Living featuring the Executive Suite Many of our RV site and RV port owners found themselves enjoying The Great Outdoors so much, they were spending more and more time here. Because it is difficult to entertain any number of friends – or if the weather had them going stir crazy inside their RV – the need for additional “living space” outside the RV became a great solution to an age-old problem. What started out as a simple screened room or gazebo has now become state-of-the-art efficiency apartments. Owners can now have full kitchens, full bathrooms, living/dining areas, plus laundry facilities – and may even add on a large screened room. If company drops in, many of these suites can accommodate them with sofa beds, futons, or airbeds. Plus the guests have their own private suite while you sleep comfortably in your RV! Because of the county's and resort’s rules and regulations, you must have an RV on site if you utilize your Executive Suite. This was meant to prevent the use of these buildings as an efficiency apartment, as RV sites were not designed for full-time occupancy without an RV on site.

Meet TGO photographer extraordinaire – Robin Francis Many of the photos in this magazine have been shot by Robin, one of many photography hobbyists here in TGO. It was during the recent Covid restrictions that Robin decided to combat the boredom of isolation and renew her interest in photographing nature – and we are lucky for that! Robin recently told fellow resident photographer Jim Brubaker, "The camera has enhanced my joy of being out and about – it enhanced my life!"

TGO IS A FIREWISE COMMUNITY Our Residents/Volunteers Thank you to the residents of our community for supporting Make The Difference Firewise and participating in our Firewise Communities USA, a voluntary National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) program to help neighbors in preparing and protecting their homes against the threat of wildfire. Our work includes risk assessments, developing and implementing multiyear plans to lower risk, and educational outreach to our community.
The Great Outdoors Historical Center Lorraine Murphy is a pillar of the TGO community, volunteering on numerous committees, singing in the church choir, and most notably by creating the TGO Historical Center, which is a great place to learn about the history of TGO, and is located in the commercial area next to Trimmers. It is full of early photos and memorabilia of The Great Outdoors, with hours Monday-Friday 3pm5pm and shown by appoinment on weekends and holidays

visitors who have not been put on their guest (usually family members) list. CSA also provides Courtesy Patrol officers who assist in making sure all vehicular traffic is confined to the designated Courtesy Patrol area – non-owners are not allowed to ride through the resort without being accompanied by an owner or is being escorted by a member of The Welcome Center staff. Courtesy Patrol officers are capable of enforcing speed limits throughout the park through radar and electronic signage, but also to aid and assist registered guests and renters with information regarding the resort’s amenities and rules and regulations.

in TGO, especially if you have four legs. Drive down the east side of Plantation Drive and you’ll easily spot the local hangout for “man’s best friend” along with their owners enjoying the equivalent of a Happy Hour party. Throughout the resort you just might notice the “Love It Here” stickers on golf carts and cars. It’s no secret that our owners are our best public relations asset as they love to share with other RV’ers what a great place TGO is! Some of our residents have shared their stories below: FRANKY & NICCOLE CABAN
Meet Franky and Niccole Caban, who have been traveling medical professionals since 2018. They traveled across the country living in their fifth wheel along with their dogs and Niccole’s father, David, who also lived in his travel trailer. In late 2019, while working in the Florida Keys, David got cancer and was treated successfully. After recovery, he was unable to travel with Franky and Niccole, and they had grown tired of pulling the RVs across the country. “We remembered a nice place in Titusville with RV homes and contacted TGO Realty at The Great Outdoors. It sounded perfect to us so we reserved spots for a visit to check it out. TGO was perfect for all of us, giving us a place to permanently leave our RVs and where David could continue his independent living in a safe environment. With the help of TGO Realty, we bought our executive suite on Oak Cove, closed within the week, and left for our next assignment in Washington. In May 2021, Niccole’s mother came for a visit, and was so impressed with TGO that she went back to West Virginia, sold her property and returned to purchase a park home on Sunset Drive. While home for the holidays in December of 2021, we went to an open house on Panacea Way, and while we weren’t looking to purchase, we fell in love with the house and made the purchase. We absolutely love our new home and there are so many wonderful things that we love about living in TGO. We look forward to retiring here someday, but while we are out providing medical care to other people’s loved ones, we are thrilled to know that Niccole’s parents are both here in a happy, safe environment and living their best life. TGO allows us to travel and perform our jobs without worrying about our properties, and gives us a place to come home and enjoy all of the Florida nature and activities.” With all their family now in one spot, it looks like they all……Love It Here!
KEN & JENNIFER CAHALL
Two of our newest residents, Ken & Jennifer Cahall, come to TGO from Georgetown, Ohio. “We had just started looking for a home/condo to spend the winter months in when the Pandemic hit, so we decided to make a lifelong dream of owning a motorcoach come true. We had every intention of traveling around Florida, but once we came to TGO, we fell in love with the area and especially with the Resort. TGO checked ALL our boxes. . . gated community, well maintained, golf course, pools, 30 minutes to the beach AND we could watch rocket launches from our site, just to name a few things! Before we left to head north, we purchased an RV site at TGO!! We couldn’t be more excited and are looking forward to spending next winter there, enjoying ALL the amenities available! Their logo says it all – We Love It Here!” 30 • The Great Outdoors
JAMES & KARIN COBURN
Meet James and Karin Coburn – and read their story: “In 2013, we relocated to Citrus County, Florida from San Diego, California, looking for a quality lifestyle for retirement. After Mom’s passing, we realized we did not need two homes and thought we should look into finding another home. At the end of an RV trip, we booked a week in The Great Outdoors, having heard it was a nice place to visit. We arrived on a Saturday in May 2021 and immediately liked what we saw. After cruising around on our mini golfcart, we decided we should explore homes in this resort. We were not only impressed by the natural beauty and the nature but also the friendliness of the people in TGO. On Monday, we met with an agent at TGO Realty, who showed us what properties were available. By Tuesday, we had decided TGO was where we wanted to live, and put in an offer on Bowfin Court, which was accepted two days later. We went home to Citrus County and put our home up for sale. On July 8th our home in Citrus County closed, and on July 9th, the Bowfin house closed – and the rest is history! Now, almost a year later, we are still excited to be living in such a wonderful community. We absolutely love it here!”
EDWIN & NANCY LOFTIN
Edwin and Nancy Loftin are relatively new to the RV lifestyle, having only been enjoying it for the past two and a half years. Nancy is a retired graphic designer and publications director in the fishing and hunting industry, while Edwin, a registered nurse, is currently the Senior Vice President of Integrated and Acute Care at Parrish Medical Center where he has worked for the past 15 years. Nancy is the daughter of a B52 pilot who grew up on air force bases while Edwin is from Eastern North Carolina where he grew up on the family farm. They met in college in North Carolina and are the proud parents of a daughter and son and have three young grandsons. Nancy shared their favorite things include TGO’s convenience to stores and restaurants; friendly residents; excellent staff, lawn and maintenance services. “We enjoy riding our bikes through the scenic paths and roads. The wildlife is amazing to watch. Edwin has had the pleasure of playing on the golf course, and we enjoy the deck at the Blue Heron Restaurant. The community pool is such an asset, especially when the kids visit. We have enjoyed using the fitness center and use our golf cart often (sometimes with their miniature schnauzer, Tater). The RV garage with full hook-ups has been great for keeping our RV out of the elements, and the full RV repair service center on site as well as golf cart service has been more than convenient”! They love it here!

Ever wonder what TGO looks like from above? Thanks to Paula Carlson, daughter of TGO longtime resident Lorraine Murphy, we now know! Paula took this photo recently on one of her many trips to TGO to visit her mom. In fact, Paula and her husband were one of the very first residents on Sunset Drive where she convinced her mother to also purchase a home!

Fishing in and out of The TGO Resort TGO is a catch & release program Fishing is just one of many activities TGO residents and guests enjoy – from blue gill to the elusive largemouth bass. TGO stocks our many lakes and maintains them through our lakes management program. You are welcome to try your hand at reeling in one of our “whoppers”, but remember we are a ‘CATCH AND RELEASE” only park. Be sure to read our rules and regulations below. If you are more interested in trophy bass fishing on the nearby St. Johns River, or flats fishing on the Banana or Indian Rivers, you are just minutes away from some of the best fishing you will ever experience. Whether you are a novice angler or an avid fisherman, you have
John Roberts & volunteers gather for restocking ponds
your choice of freshwater or saltwater species. From nearby Port Canaveral, you can charter a state-of-the-art deep sea fishing boat for some offshore trolling for the Giant Marlin, Sailfish, or Silver Tarpon, or join others on a deep sea fishing excursion from half a day to a full day. Our Indian River Lagoon and adjacent Mosquito Lagoon are world renowned for their incredible flats fishing opportunities. These shallow saltwater lagoons hold large numbers of the ever-popular redfish and spotted seatrout plus black drum, snook and even tarpon. Of course, be sure to obtain the proper state fishing licenses!

Our residents have a very special relationship with the diverse collection of wildlife that coexists in perfect harmony with their human counterparts. Our residents are actively involved in the resort operations. Our residents are mostly empty nesters who want to know that their home is being looked after while they are traveling around the country. Our residents love to walk our nature trail, visit our on-site restaurant, exercise their pet at the dog-play area, play golf, swim, play tennis, exercise or just simply relax and enjoy the near perfect weather Central Florida has to offer. Here are some of the most important facts you need to remember about our resort:
• The resort is just under 3,000 acres • Although it is a condominium project, you own the land fee simple • We are a Good Sam park maintaining a perfect 10-10-10 rating • No state income tax! • Maintenance fee under $275/month includes most everything but phone and electric. • Lawn maintenance, sprinkler system included • 24-hour security with gated entry • Located next to I-95, exit 215 convenient to Central Florida attractions and white sandy beaches! • Activities are offered year round

Meet Kathy Stinnett, TGO's Mail Center Guru What an amazing benefit it is to have our own Mail Center inside the TGO grounds, and thanks to Kathy Stinnett and her staff, it is a very efficient operation. Kathy has been our Mail Center Guru for over 16 years – and from what we saw, it is no easy task. Receiving and shipping nearly 40,000 packages a year is a daunting chore plus the regular mail service. Keeping track of RV site mail versus residential mail, helping residents with storing their mail while they are gone and the forwarding of their mail. It definitely fills up Kathy’s day. One of the greatest benefits of living inside TGO is that we have our own Mail Center. Imagine every time you needed this service, you had to drive downtown and deal with the crowds, especially during holiday season. Kathy has lived in TGO for about 25 years. She and her husband, Bill, first started on Oak Cove with an RV lot and then built their house on Grande Haven where they’ve lived for over 21 years. In her former life, Kathy was office manager at the Dearborn Sausage Company in Dearborn, MI, where she handled all the shipping responsibilities for the hams and sausages her company distributed domestically. Bill worked with Ford Motor Company at the Romulus, MI, parts redistribution center. After retiring, they first moved to Kentucky and lived on Lake Barkley for seven years. They then moved to TGO. Between the two of them they have six children and several grandchildren.
This behind-the-scene look provides just a small glimpse of the amount of individual boxes that Kathy and her team maintain. All-in-all, there are over 1,400 boxes. The US Postal Service delivers mail directly to 800 residential boxes and Kathy’s staff manages over 600 boxes – which are the RV sites. In addition, her team is responsible for receiving and distributing over 3,000 packages a month. 36 • The Great Outdoors
Kathy has seen a lot of changes to our Mail Center here in TGO. One of those was the impact of the internet, especially Amazon, which has created a mass volume of packages that both arrive and ship from our Mail Center. “Right now, we handle about 3,000 packages a month,” explained Kathy, “and that is just the the RV sites.” Our Mail Center and Kathy’s staff is responsible for all mail and packages related to the RV sites. This includes the streets of Sunset, Greenwing, Club Cove, Coach Club, Windsong, Oak Cove, Fawn Trail and the RV sites on Plantation. There are two separate mail routes in TGO; the RV sites and the Residential sites. The US Postal worker you see in the office and at the outside parcel lockers is distributing the mail for the residential route and takes care of the mail and packages that are delivered to those houses. Our Mail Center TGO's On-Site Mail Center is almost a full-service facility. The only thing they don’t do is handle overnight mail and some things related to international mail, like international packages requiring customs forms. Besides Kathy there are four other part-time employees; Nancy, Pat, Debbie and Tacy. “It takes about a year for a new employee to learn everything involved in the job,” claims Kathy. “Even though we are not official postal employees, we still abide by all postal rules and regulations.” When we were there for the interview, we joked with Kathy about receiving large boxes – which is difficult for her staff as they are limited on space to store too many boxes, let alone large ones. She went on to explain that she has received mattresses, a power washer and even a 6 foot electric child’s car. She’s hoping no one will be shipping her any refrigerators any time soon.
The Nature Center at The Great Outdoors By Darlene Durham, Public Relations
The T.G. Carlson Nature Center is a 1,984 square foot building housing our museum of nature displays, library, meeting room, kitchen and enclosed porch. The building sits on the bank of the picturesque Addison Canal and the enclosed climate controlled porch is a popular and tranquil place to enjoy your favorite beverage while reading one of the library's books, enjoying the serenity of nature or visiting with friends. Picnic tables are available outside under the shade trees. The building is open 365 days a year from 8am to 5pm. During our “in-season” months, we offer educational programs, organized walks on our multiple trails while enjoying and learning about our wildlife and environment, field trips, educational nature videos and slideshows and educational bulletin board topics. We also communicate announcements and articles on the Nature Center pages of the community newspaper, The Happenings.
Family Friendly and Kid Approved In addition to the learning experience of the nature displays, the Nature Center building has child-appropriate activities to entertain and educate. Kids and grandkids love visiting the Nature Center with the scavenger hunts being a popular activity! Additionally, during our “in-season” months, we host other activities such as a “Fall Fun Day” and “Spring Festival” where we have crafts and activities for kids from 1 to 101. To learn more about us, pick up a brochure at The Welcome Center, the Nature Center or visit us online at www.tgonaturecenter.org. The Nature Center website contains hundreds of photographs to help you learn to identify our Florida species of wildlife and plants. Come join us! The Nature Center at The Great Outdoors is a selfsupporting Florida not for profit 501 (c) (3) organization. Our purpose is “To promote the awareness, appreciation and conservation of nature’s plants, animals, birds, fish and reptiles”. We accomplish our purpose through our museum, library, educational activities and the Nature Center website. We also have wildlife rescuers who performed 69 rescues in 2021.
