Dear readers, This year it is my great pleasure to announce the complete overhaul of the 5 Continents Editions website, now with new graphics and fresh content, making it even easier for users to keep up to date on our new developments, leaf through titles old and new, and buy them directly online. The catalogue opens with Pablo Reinoso, a monograph covering the work of the brilliant sculptor of Argentinian origins, whose hallmark Spaghetti Benches have found their way into many art collections worldwide. Spring will see the publication of Lalique. The Genius of Glass, the Magic of Crystal, a boxed set of eight small volumes spotlighting historic pieces in the Musée Lalique in Wingensur-Moder, France (north of Strasbourg): an ideal opportunity to discover and explore the creative genius of René Lalique (1860–1945). Admirers of Japanese culture will be delighted by Re-envisioning Japan. Meiji Fine Art Textiles, a richly illustrated volume exploring how Japanese textile manufacturing was affected by the country’s opening to the West. The exhibition catalogue The Intimate World of Josef Sudek is the result of collaboration with the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, and is aimed both at aficionados of the great Czech photographer and all those keen on the medium itself. In parallel, the catalogue The Rise of abstraction in Russia will accompany another of the Ottawa museum’s exhibitions, to be held in autumn. Three important works stand out among our new titles on African art: Guro, part of the “Visions of Africa” series; Mumuye, on the enigmatic art of this people in north-eastern Nigeria; and African Art. Portraits of a Collection, which takes an unusual and stimulating approach to an important private collection. Lovers of graphic design with a penchant also for magician’s tricks will be intrigued by Illusions. The Art of Magic, a lavishly illustrated monogram published in collaboration with the McCord Museum in Montreal, Canada. Lastly, I strongly encourage you to take a look at The Dancers from the Villa of the Papyri, the first volume in our new line of limited, individually hand-crafted editions, aptly titled “Tailormade”. A true collector’s item not to be missed. Happy reading!

PA B L O R E I N O SO Texts by Gérard Wajcman and Henri-François Debailleux
27.5 x 35.6 cm, 256 pages 220 colour illustrations Hardcover with jacket Bilingual edition English/French ISBN 9788874397525 £ 65.00 | US $ 90.00 | Can $ 108.00 | € 80.00
This book is the first important monograph dedicated to the work of Pablo Reinoso, a Franco-Argentinian artist and designer, a curious and largely self-taught jack-of-all-trades. Technically a sculptor, but actually an artist through and through, Pablo Reinoso has been exploring multifarious artistic avenues from an early age. Part French, through his mother, he left his native Argentina in 1978 and settled in Paris, where he worked on his art. He produces his works in series—Articulations (1970–80), Water Landscapes (1981–86), The Discovery of America (1986–89), Breathing Sculptures (1995–2002)—which he chops up and rummages through as he explores new worlds and different materials, translating the permanent work in progress which is his way of thinking. An increasing maturity is evident in Ashes to Ashes (2002), a work in which he twists and splits wooden boards in an attempt to rid them of their function. Continuing in the same vein, but having in the meantime held important positions as an artistic director and designer in large companies, Reinoso began a new series in 2004 highlighting an icon of industrial design, the Thonet chair. He then turned his attention to the seemingly anonymous public benches found in all cultures throughout the world—objects that for this very reason are timeless and beyond fashion. The results are his so-called Spaghetti Benches (begun in 2006), which have multiplied and found their place in the most unlikely corners. In his very latest series, Scribbling Benches (started in 2009), Reinoso no longer takes an anonymous bench, nor an iconic chair, as his point of departure, but a steel girder. The work plays on the unexpectedness of a solid, heavy object, a key structural component in architecture, that is made to twist like a piece of wire and turn into a bench suggesting airy, transparent, contemplative spaces. Gérard Wajcman is a writer and psychoanalyst, besides being a regular lecturer in the Department of Psychoanalysis at the University of Paris 8, and a member of the École de la Cause Freudienne. He is an avid art lover, and his studies and books mainly focus on deciphering the image, and the omnipotence of “visual culture” in our century. Henri-François Debailleux is a journalist and art critic who has contributed to Libération for the past twenty-five years; he teaches at the Institut des Carrières Artistiques, and along with numerous catalogue introductions, he has also organized several exhibitions himself.

The eight volumes in this box-set reveal the manifold creative talents of René Lalique, an exceptional artist, Art Nouveau jeweller, and later Art Déco glassmaker, as well as those of his successors and the many people who perpetuate these skills in the present day. Illustrating previously unpublished works, Lalique retraces the history of the brand and its founding family. For Lalique is above all a famous name: the name of René, “the inventor of the modern jewel”, as Emile Gallé described him at the close of the nineteenth century. After working from home as a designer for large firms, Lalique opened his own workshop, where he created objects in the round using previously neglected materials, such as horn, semi-precious stones, enamels, and glass. These already featured the themes that would recur throughout his career: Female, Flora and Fauna, with the addition of a fourth “F”, Form, with the advent of Art Déco. From a very young age René Lalique enjoyed drawing, observing nature closely and making sketches. Although his most detailed works were undoubtedly his jewellery designs, drawing was to remain an indispensable prerequisite to his creations. Lalique found an outlet for his creative genius in all sorts of everyday objects, including lamps, paperweights, perfume bottles, tableware, and statuettes, magnifying their importance and rendering them wholly exceptional today. René Lalique also turned his hand to decoration and the creation of monumental works. Whether designing the stained glass for a chapel, an imposing fountain for the exhibition of decorative and industrial arts held in Paris in 1925, or objects for railway trains and ocean liners, he was always keen to create with glass and to play with light. Véronique Brumm trained as a historian and has carried out research into the history of glassmaking in the northern Vosges area, taking a special interest in the Wingen, Meisenthal, Goetzenbruck, and Saint-Louis glassworks in the eighteenth century. She was closely involved in the foundation of the Lalique Museum in Wingen-sur-Moder, and has been its director since it opened in 2011.

In 2015 the McCord Museum in Montreal, Canada, was gifted with the Allan Slaight Collection, one of the largest treasuries of posters and documents on magic in the world. Published in conjunction with the exhibition Illusions at the McCord Museum, this volume presents 250 exceptional posters from this collection, dating from the 1880s to the 1940s. During this period, known as the Golden Age of Magic, droves of travelling magicians and prestidigitators fought a veritable advertising war. All over the United States and Europe, city walls and billboards were plastered with posters offering tantalizing previews of their most spectacular tricks, giving poster–designers and printers of the era a golden opportunity to flex their imaginations and load their work with devils and demons, skeletons and skulls, bodies and decapitated heads, playing–cards and rabbits, alluring assistants, phantasmagoria and esoteric symbols. Seven authors recognized as experts in their respective fields introduce this dazzling array of colour and fantastic imagery, providing insights to explain the full historic, social and artistic value of these magnificent posters. Jacques Ayroles is Head of Posters, Drawings and Advertising Materials at the Cinémathèque française. David Ben is a world-renowned magician and historian of magic. He is the co-founder and current Artistic Director of Magicana, and the publisher of Magicol, the Journal for Magic History and Collectibles. Ersy Contogouris is an adjunct professor in the Department of Art History at the Université du Québec à Montréal. Kevin Grace is the Head of the Archives & Rare Books Library at the University of Cincinnati, where he also teaches multicultural courses in the University Honors Program. Giusy Pisano is a professor at ENS Louis-Lumière, France’s national film, photography and sound engineering school; associate professor at the Center for Korean History at Korea University; and director of research in the Arts and Media Department of the University of Paris III: Sorbonne Nouvelle. Katharina Rein is a researcher and lecturer in cultural history and media studies, currently working at the International Research Institute for Cultural Techniques and Media Philosophy (IKKM) at Bauhaus University Weimar. Christian Vachon is an art historian specialized in Canadian iconography. He earned a Master’s in Art Studies from the Université du Québec à Montréal in 1988. In 2010, he was also appointed Curator, Paintings, Prints and Drawings at the McCord Museum, Montréal.

Re-envisioning Japan is the first truly comprehensive book about Japanese art textiles of the Meiji period. Lavishly illustrated, the book features the bijutsu senshōku, or fine art textiles, that generated a flurry of excitement among international markets between the mid-1870s and the second decade of the twentieth century. The collaboration of seven international scholars explores the craftsmanship and remarkable talent of the Meiji luxury textile producers, artists, and artisans and documents the reactions of consumers in Japan and abroad. Based on centuries-old traditional modes of textile production, the makers of fine art textiles modernized exports and elevated Japan’s prestige in the world. This book showcases the spectacular ornamental textiles that were made for the Western market during Japan’s Meiji era (1868–1912) and now part of museum and private collections in Japan, North America, and Europe. John E.Vollmer is an internationally recognized curator and scholar in the fields of Asian art, textiles, costumes, decorative arts, and design. He is author of thirty exhibition catalogues and many academic and popular books and articles. Sonia Ashmore has taught, lectured, and published on design and the decorative arts. From 2006 to 2009 she was a Research Fellow at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Will Chandler has served as Curator of Decorative Arts at the San Diego Museum of Art and now works as an independent curator, researcher, and writer. Diane Genre is a collector and former dealer of Japanese art. Takashi Hirota, a leading scholar on late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century fineart textile production at the Takashimaya Company, is professor at the Kyoto Women’s University and served as curator at both the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art and the Kyoto Municipal University of Arts. Hiroko T. McDermott is an independent scholar living in Cambridge, England. She is the author, with Clare Pollard, Katsumi Mori, and George Schwartz, of Threads of Silk and Gold: Ornamental Textiles from Meiji Japan. Asako Nagakawa from Tokyo is a fashion and design historian. She is an Associate Professor at Otsuma Women’s University, Tokyo. Iwao Nagasaki is a professor at Kyoritsu Women’s University in Tokyo, where he teaches in the Department of Apparel Science. His writings include topics ranging from theatrical costume to specialized textile-patterning techniques. From 1982 to 2002 he was curator at the Tokyo National Museum. Susan Tosk is a New York–based dealer in Japanese decorative arts principally dating from the Meiji and Taishō eras.

The Russian Avant-Garde movement is a common term denoting a most remarkable art phenomenon that flourished in Russia from 1890 to 1930 that covered art, literature, cinema, sculpture, architecture and political propaganda. Work from this period is easily recognizable thanks to bright colours, geometric shapes and bold lettering. This lavishly illustrated exhibition catalogue features six major works from renowned Russian avant-garde artists: Kazimir Malevich, Vladimir Tatlin, Ivan Kliun, Ilja Chashnik, El Lissitzky, and Lyubov Popova. These works will be accompanied by a selection of original documents, objects, manuscripts and photographs from the art historian and independent scholar Andréi Nakov’s private collection that will contribute to highlight the importance of this critical current in the formulation of modern art. Numerous publications have been devoted to the non-objective Russian avant-garde in recent years, but there is still much to be explored with regard to the movement and its beginnings. Andréi Nakov is an Art Historian and Independent Scholar. He has published numerous theoretical studies, monographs and exhibition catalogues on the Russian avant-garde, Futurism, Dada, Constructivism, contemporary art and European abstract art. Andréi Nakov’s works have been translated in many countries, including Russia.

An accessible, affordable monograph of the work of Josef Sudek also known as “The Poet of Prague”. Josef Sudek (1896–1976) was a Czech photographer, best known for his photographs of Prague. He worked as a bookbinder before turning to photography after his wartime experience and subsequent loss of his right arm. The Intimate World of Josef Sudek examines how Sudek’s photographs reflect his relationship to the world around him, from intimate explorations of his cherished objects and views through his window to his more expansive night walks through the streets of Prague and its peripheries, as well as excursions into the surrounding countryside. Featuring five essays, warm reminiscences by two friends and former assistants, two technical notes as well as more than 120 vibrant plates and dozens of illustrations, this book offers a compelling view of Sudek’s photographs, and the art of his friends and fellow artists. Josef Sudek’s fascination with light and its absence resulted in some of the twentieth century’s most haunting images of nature, monuments, city streets and objects—all transformed by his sensitive understanding of light’s power to reveal how darkness renders all impenetrable. He mastered the technical aspects of the medium, creating carbon prints, purˇ idlos and veteše—all techniques that allowed him to transform the object quality of the photograph. With a consummate sense of how the careful printing of images determined the picture’s expressive potential, Sudek used the evocative moodiness of the carbon process to its best advantage as he did with the gelatin silver print’s power to reflect and delineate. The photographer’s boundless creative spirit was sustained by deep friendships with an intimate circle of artist friends, including poets, painters, sculptors, designers, writers and musicians, all of whom contributed to the rich artistic environment of Prague in the first part of the twentieth century. This gorgeous book highlights seventy works from an important private collection built over more than four decades with discipline, curiosity, and passion. It is one of the finest private collections of African art from West and Central Africa, through South Africa and Madagascar. Conceived around four main themes—Governance and transmission, Protection and caring, Coming together (celebrating, partying, judging and praising), Serving and beautifying—this selection offers a capacious general introduction to the topic of African art and further our understanding of the artworks’ source cultures. The beautiful photographs of the seventy works in the first part of the publication are followed by a whole chapter dedicated to some important avant-garde photography masterpieces showing the narrow relationship between this movement and nine fascinating African art works belonging to the collection. The objects are shown side by side with renown works from Alfred Stieglitz, Man Ray, Lajos Kassák, Hannah Höch, Erwin Blumenfeld, Maurice Tabard, Karl Blossfeldt and Robert Doisneau. Striking a balance between often published and lesser-known masterpieces from the collection, the present volume unveils to the public a selection of seven contemporary artists-photographers (Jean Marc Tingaud, Louis Tirilly, Nicolas Bruant, Roger Ballen, Groupe Street Collodion Art, Coco Fronsac, and Frédéric Vidal) who have been asked to represent in a contemporary and personal style for the first time nine renowned works. Patrick Caput is a collector, international consultant and expert of African and Oceanic art. Valentine Plisnier is teacher and researcher in History of Art, and has written major works summarizing the impact of non-European art in the photographic modernity from 1918 until today.

Through forty-one masterworks, Mumuye reveals some of the most accomplished statues made by this Nigerian tribal group. It was not until the late 1960s that statues from the Mumuye culture of northeastern Nigeria appeared on the European art scene. Their impact was immediate and profound: African art aficionados marvelled at Mumuye artists’ abstract interpretation of the human body, which recalled the approach to anatomy by artists of the Cubist and Expressionist movements. Indeed, anthropomorphic Mumuye figure sculptures demonstrate an astonishing range of variations, testifying to their makers’ unbridled creativity and limitless inventiveness. Here, a meticulous analysis of the extraordinary forms of Mumuye figures—paying attention to their striking inherent sense of motion—leads to a new style of classification that recognizes different workshops and even the hands of individual masters. A summary of the scant field-based studies discusses the figures’ primary role as emblems of status and rank, their connections to ancestral veneration, and healing and divination practices. Though a selection of masks and other objects, this book reveals the beauty of Mumuye figurative sculpture. Frank Herreman was Director of the Ethnographic Museum in Antwerp, Belgium, from 1989 to 1995, and Director of Exhibitions and Publications at the Museum for African Art in New York from 1995 to 2004. Constantine Petridis, director of 5 Continents Editions’ Visions of Africa series, has been Curator of African Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art since 2003.

VISIONS O F A FR I C A Series directed by Constantine Petridis, Head Curator of African Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio “Visions of Africa” is a series devoted to the arts of Africa, grouped according to the continent’s different peoples. Each volume follows two main themes: the first is visual and aesthetic, taking the form of a rich selection of approximately sixty-two photographs of masterpieces; while the second is theoretical and contextual, exploring the significance of these items within the population that created them. The series is meant both for readers wishing to discover the arts of these populations and for those who intend to learn more about them. Highly accessible, avoiding the intimidating feel of scientific literature, the books nonetheless contain significant annotated bibliographies and the most current data based on relevant field research. Author texts explore the origin of the items as well as the context of their use within the various African cultures. Their evolution and longevity are equally taken into consideration, often up to the present day. Contemporary and historical field photographs are reproduced throughout the body of the text.

Art lovers well know the works of the different groups of peoples generally referred to as “Guro” who live in the centre of the Ivory Coast. Close to the Wan, Baule, Yaure, and Bete, the Guro have maintained close contacts with their neighbours, and reciprocal influences are apparent in their various artistic creations. Masks have a particular importance that goes well beyond the value attributed to them for their aesthetic qualities on the art market. These objects might even be considered emblematic, having till now allowed those who have defined themselves as Guro to lay claim to this identity.Whereas the French colonization largely weakened the prestige of those men whose power resulted from their hunting and war activities, the continuation of complex rituals that entailed the use of masks allowed the men to preserve a form of political and religious control. By diversifying the categories of masks between those that receive blood sacrifices to honour spiritual entities, and those made more for entertainments given at funerals, political demonstrations, and tourist events, the Guro have reinvented, regalvanized, and readapted perfectly integrated rituals to a contemporary society in permanent change. Anne-Marie Bouttiaux is an anthropologist and art historian. Today she works with the Laboratoire d’Anthropologie des Mondes contemporains (LAMC) at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and with the workshop Danse comme Objet anthropologique at the CNRS in Paris. She conducts field research in West Africa, mostly in the Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, and Senegal. She organizes many exhibitions.

A fascinating collection of the wooden ritual objects called “spirit boards” made in the Papuan Gulf of New Guinea. They represent spirits that protect clans from sickness, evil spirits, and death. The first book devoted exclusively to the subject sets the individual works in their local context with historical and field photographs. The sculptural forms called “spirit boards” are known by different names in the numerous ethnic regions of the Papuan Gulf, and are called gope in several languages.Traditionally, boards were made with wood from discarded canoes, usually decorated with carved and painted designs on one side. The boards were carved by important men of an extended family or clan. In the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, men lived apart from women and uninitiated boys. Their houses had designated areas or shrines created for the display of items that indicated personal status and clan identity. Multiple boards were placed in these shrines and served as reminders to their owners about their responsibility to the clan and the community. Embodied Spirits is the first book devoted exclusively to the subject, and presents the numerous styles of spirit boards. Full-page colour photographs illustrate the boards of each region, selected from noted international and private collections. The description includes detailed collection history, provenance, publication, and exhibition information for each work. Additionally, contextual historical photographs show the actual spirit boards in situ or similar examples from corresponding time periods. The original photograph has been printed under the supervision of the photographer, Luigi Spina, in the city where the five young dancers are today conserved.

This unique book, box and original photograph presentation-holder were conceived as a perfectly matching set. The metal box alone required the contributions of four different craftsmen. The original photograph has been printed under the supervision of the photographer, Luigi Spina, in the city where the five young dancers are today conserved.

Special boxed edition of 100 numbered copies each featuring an original photograph by Luigi Spina 23.5 x 33 cm, 192 pages 70 colour illustrations € 950.00 This precious limited edition is exclusively available at the publisher’s
This precious limited edition offers the first presentation of the group of five Dancers from the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum, discovered beneath the ashes of Vesuvius by archaeologist Karl Weber between 1754 and 1756. Adorned by more than one hundred marble and bronze sculptures and with a collection of over one thousand papyrus scrolls, the Villa of the Papyri is a unique discovery in the history of archaeology. The Dancers—today exhibited in the Archaeological Museum in Naples—were part of this enormous collection and displayed in the “villa of Otium” (villa of leisure) on the Gulf of Naples where the Roman aristocracy enjoyed the spirit of cultivated ease, literature and philosophy. The legendary site was the setting for many stories interrupted by the eruption of Vesuvius. The Dancers from the Villa of the Papyri takes us back in time to reveal one of these stories, that of the five fascinating bronze statues. Like many other archaeological finds at sites in Herculaneum and Pompeii, the Dancers have altered the way we consider art and architecture but also the way we look at aesthetics. The expert photographer Luigi Spina offers a visual description of these five extraordinary and moving young women, while Stefano De Caro relates the historic and artistic context in which they were created. The Dancers from the Villa of the Papyri is a timeless and visual journey to discover the origin of beauty. Luigi Spina (b. 1966) is a photographer from Naples. In 2002 he began his photographic portrayal of the Farnese collection of Classical sculptures for the Museo Archeologico di Napoli. He also participated at the ninth International Photography Festival in Rome and at MIAFAIR 2013 with his book-project The Buchner Boxes. Stefano De Caro, Director-General of ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property) is an archaeologist, author, and lecturer. He has taught in several Italian universities. A member of various professional cultural associations in Italy and abroad, including the Europae Archaeologiae Consilium, he has been Director-General of Antiquities with the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities.

Published to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Alfred Baur’s birth (1865–1951) and the 50th anniversary of the Baur Foundation, Museum of Far Eastern Art, this book presents one of the major collections of Asian art through an opulent selection from the nine thousand Chinese and Japanese art objects. Sabre fittings, netsuke, lacquerware, prints, jades, and imperial ceramics: the illustrations show the diversity of the works and the quality of the collection as a whole. The precious Japanese objects, so meticulously worked and of technical perfection, reveal the outstanding skills of Japanese craftsmen, while the simplicity of the forms of the Chinese monochrome ceramics display the contemporaneity of the visionary master ceramists of the Song dynasty. Silver medal winner MGIP Book Award 2016
As one leafs through the pages, Asia Imagined slowly becomes apparent, like a treasure hunt. Diamond-studded pagodas and pavilions, busy scholars beneath the starry sky, nacreous moonlight scenes, shimmering phoenixes, jade dragons, and multi-coloured cherry blossom-like gems depict an imaginary land. The Cartier magic has its effect. Side-by-side with the creations of the Parisian jeweller, the imperial porcelains, lacquerware embellished with precious metals, embroidered silks, jades, coloured enamels, netsuke, sword hilts, and prints belonging to the Baur Foundation give their version of the marvels of China and Japan and install a unique dialogue, offering an exceptional opportunity to view two of the world’s most outstanding collections.
Here is a fresh look at August Rodin, one of the greatest sculptors of all time, thanks not only to his ability to capture the emotional and psychological complexity of human beings, but also his having profoundly renewed the very language of sculpture. The topic of metamorphosis is directly related to his work, without model or witness, in the privacy of his studio. Fragile plasters as well as bronzes, marble figures, drawings, watercolours, and photographs all attest to this creative ferment. This catalogue sheds light on the various processes of reprise and transformation, and takes stock of the sculptor’s prodigious creativity. It also features masterpieces like the two hundred or so figures fleeing The Gates of Hell—a work Rodin was to draw from for the rest of his career—and his celebrated Walking Man.
French painter Claude Monet (1840–1926) is one of the most popular artists of all time. For the first time, this book explores a new aspect of Monet’s work: his fascination, during the 1870s, with bridges. Beautifully illustrated and published, the book explores how Monet sought to establish himself as a leader of the avant-garde and how his paintings of bridges played a pivotal role in this context. Focusing on twelve major paintings by Monet, the catalogue further examines the Impressionists’ response to their ever-changing environment and the late nineteenth-century transformation of Paris and its suburbs.

The book sets itself the aim of illustrating the different manners in which Rome was viewed by those whose interest in the city was prompted by such motivations as scientific research, artistic passion or study, professional and commercial demands, or simply personal pleasure and curiosity. The selection displayed allows viewers to know and learn about the nature and specificity of the earliest aspects of photography in Rome, to the birth of professional photographic studios and the creation of the most popular and successful sets of images on the international market. The common denominator of all the different facets of the exhibition is the production of “vedute”, the views of the city that would become the most distinctive characteristic of photography in Rome in the decades that followed. 22 x 29 cm, 256 pages 231 colour illustrations Softcover with flaps ISBN 9788874397389 £ 65.00, US $100.00, Can $ 115.00, € 45.00 Co-published with the Museo Vincenzo Vela, Ligornetto

From the remarkable Art Brut Collection in Lausanne, Switzerland, comes Véhicules, the first book in an exciting new series. The Art Brut Collection has created the Biennale de l’Art Brut, a project that capitalizes on the diversity of this superb collection of more than 60,000 works by grouping a selection of them into themed exhibitions. As movement was a recurring theme in Art Brut, the first of these shows, titled Vehicles, features Motooka locomotives, Franz Kernbeis’s bicycle, Willem van Genk’s airships, and Auguste Forestier’s boats. The works represented here highlight a variety of approaches to motion in the form of sculptures, drawings, and constructions by more than 50 artists.
Architecture, the second Art Brut Biennale, presents a selection of works from the Art Brut Collection (Lausanne), linked together by a common theme. Art Brut authors design architectures in resonance with their everyday lives or their memories, reorganizing the space around them according to their own rules and needs. Over 250 works by 52 creators of all origins—European, North American, or Asian—have been selected. The diversity at the heart of this concept can be seen in the many different forms and techniques used, such as painting, drawing, sculpture, and embroidery.

The aim of this catalogue is to establish a dialogue between the historical past of the timepiece, the work of designers who produce watches or clocks, and visual artists who work with the concept of time. This catalogue of pre-Columbian art is a fresh attempt to examine and come to terms with artworks produced by a section of mankind that came to the attention of Europeans only after the voyages of Columbus and other explorers. It illustrates the collection of pre-Columbian art of Giancarlo and Inti Ligabue, one of the few collections of its kind in Italian hands: over 150 pieces from Mesoamerica and South America, an extraordinary corpus of objects that give testament to the excellence achieved by ancient artists. But it also tells the story of certain rare objects which belonged to the Medici Collection.

In the early twentieth century, face masks and figurative sculptures from Africa captured the imagination of admirers of art in Europe and North America. Drawing on archival, museum, and fieldbased data, Senufo Unbound: Dynamics of Art and Identity in West Africa explores historical foundations for the term Senufo and its use to label arts from western Burkina Faso, northern Côte d’Ivoire, and southern Mali. Richly illustrated with 281 colour and black-and-white photographs, the book re-examines the concept of Senufo-ness and expands the views of a dynamic region’s arts and identities.
24 x 28.5 cm, 288 pages 286 colour illustrations Hardcover with jacket ISBN 9788874396665 £ 45.00, US $ 75.00, Can $ 86.00, € 60,00
The Mossi people of Burkina Faso have a rich and complex history that is mirrored by the several types and styles of figures and masks they create. They came into being around 1500 A.D. when a large group of horsemen from what is now northern Ghana rode north into the valley of the Volta River and conquered the local farmers. The descendants of the conquering horsemen became the ruling class and used political art in the form of royal figures to validate their authority. Meanwhile the descendants of the conquered farmers became the spiritual class and made masks to represent the spirits of nature. The stylistic diversity of this art mirrors the several geographically divergent peoples who were conquered in 1500 and eventually became the Mossi we know today. Until the 1980s there was much confusion about the accurate attribution of Mossi art to the people who created it. This book makes clear that the Mossi have continued to create brilliant art that they use to this day to express ideas about politics and religion.

Headrests are simple, utilitarian objects. Widely used across Africa, they are predominantly found in the eastern, central, and southern part of the continent. Also known as “neckrests” or “pillows”, headrests are valuable and very personal objects that are indispensable to everyday life. This book is a journey through ethnicity, anthropology, aesthetics, creativity, tradition, and spirituality. A journey to a part of Africa that materializes through a simple artefact that sometimes dreams to become art: a dream that starts with resting the neck on a piece of wood.

With superb full-page photographs and close-ups of single details, Micro Monu mentality extols the wealth of expression found in talismans, weights, boxes, containers, fetishes, jewels, and other objects made from wood, ivory, bone, bronze, iron, aluminium, and stone. None of these exceed 15 cm (just under 6 inches) in height or length, and though indeed “microscopic”, they are as expressive as much larger works, and are even ‘monumental’ in their own right. Showcased here are approximately 150 objects from a unique collection of 20,000 pieces. Representing the quintessence of African thought, religiosity, and prodigious formal inventiveness, this private collection is a celebration of the union of the minuscule, the sacred, and the precious.

Meet the authors Parcours des mondes, Paris, 8 September 2016, 4pm Talks and book presentations with authors and photographers are special events that invariably generate a special closeness between publishers and their readers. This year we are proud to announce that we have been invited by the organizers of Parcours des mondes to stage an entire evening of encounters during this important annual Paris fair dedicated to the arts of Africa, Oceania, Asia, and the Americas. At this event 5 Continents will present the latest issues in its specialist publications on non-European art, noted for their insightful, expert commentaries on the artworks lavishly illustrated. At the meeting, Virginia-Lee Webb will talk us through the pages of Embodied Spirits. Gope Boards from the Papuan Gulf. ‘Graines’ exhibition by Paul Starosta @ Galerie Olivier Castellano Photo Saint-Germain festival, Paris, 4–20 November 2016 As part of the Photo Saint-Germain festival in Paris, 5 Continents in collaboration with Galerie Olivier Castellano, will stage an exhibition of the work of the renowned French nature photographer Paul Starosta. whose penetrating lens takes us into the complex and beautiful world of nature. Starosta reveals a microcosm of shapes and colours, in infinite detail. Some of his seeds look like flowers, others like weathered stones or manmade sculptures, others like jewels, even. His command of light and shade puts the accent on the artistic, almost magical aspect of each subject, creating miniscule masterpieces that seem to enclose the secret of life itself.
