WELCOME TO OUR SEVENTH ANNUAL BULL SALE Welcome to our seventh annual event! First of all, we would like to thank all who supported us in last year’s sale and all who attended. We would also like to thank all of the vendors who value our product and supported us with their advertising in our catalogue and in many other ways. And we always have to thank Allan Browarny for his exceptional work at capturing the great images of these meat machines and the exposure on Show Champions. And of course the ladies for putting on such a great meal every year. This year again, none of these bulls have seen anything but oats and silage. Last year as yearlings, these bulls were on the same 10 lbs. of oats and silage. As always, we do not sell yearlings so these aren’t left over from last year. We feel that our program is working very well and offers exceptional carcass quality as we can prove it with our carcass data from finishing all the commercial calves and calculating the carcass information. These animals finish by the time they reach 14-15 months and grade 80% AAA with a 60% hung weight average. We invite everyone to stop by on Wednesday, March 8 to do some homework and some great socializing. All bulls will be on display for your viewing and if you would like to see them out in an alleyway, we highly recommend coming out the night before or early on sale day. I can never say enough about the great birth weights on these bulls. For over 30 years now, we have used no herd bulls that had over a 90 lb. BW and they have to be very close or over 3.0 lbs/day gain with exceptional carcass. The bulls all have medium and very correct bone structure, and they need to walk effortless and true. All bulls don’t have the same performance but all of them are very correct and have lots to offer. The balance and uniformity on this set of bulls is great. There is no question that our program is working and getting better every year.

Auctioneer Don Oberg 780 678 6926 Ringmen Dory Gerrard 403 302 1016 Robert Lind 780 542 0123

Remember that all herd bulls in our program bred heifers and cows and we strongly believe that this increases the predictability of our program. None the less, the advice on what would be safe to breed to what is simply my opinion and the best advice based on my knowledge of this herd.

A touch on management: Your new bulls, or your old bulls for that matter – We go to a lot of different places and talk to a lot of cattlemen and difference between one's ideal and the next on how bulls should be treated on the off season is huge. We all know that fat bulls fall apart and that skinny bulls don’t have a chance either and good breeders will breed rather than eat. I feel that it is very important to have a good ration for them that will have them in a 2/5 to 3.0 condition score, 1.0 being starved and 5.0 being over finished. Some people like to strip as much weight off their animals over the winter as they can, well I don’t see these same people going up and down 80 pounds depending on what season it is on their own weight, so why is this so great? I don’t seem to see many skinny bulls or cows laying down and chewing their cuds when it -30 C, but animals in good condition do. So my opinion is that animals let to get in 2.0 or less condition score will eat more over the winter and will keep going down as they never lay down and properly digest their food as the cows in better condition will spend more time digesting their food and less time eating.

UNDERSTANDING EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDS)

EPDs versus Index I thought I would take some time to explain the difference between EPDs and indexes as I get asked about it every year. EPDs are breed-wide and indexes are calculated on in-herd performance only. For example, a bull with a 110 weaning weight index would have gained 10% above average and a bull with a 97 weaning weight Index would have gained 3% below average, 100 Index being average. Feel free to ask questions if something isn’t clear, as we want to help in any way possible. EPDs are useful tools when planning breeding programs. Attention should be paid to the heritability and correlations to the traits a breeder wants to improve upon within the herd. Some traits are more heritable than others resulting in faster progress being made in comparison to other less heritable traits. Also, many traits are

correlated, wherein the trait is affected by the expression of several other traits. It is important to be aware of such logistics when developing selection criteria in a breeding program. Understanding the heritability and the effects of correlation between traits will aid in developing a genetic selection program that will optimize improvement on desired traits while minimizing undesirable side effects. How to use EPDs in Sire Selection Each individual breeder must set his own selection goals based on the needs of his operation, the situation for that trait in his herd, and his production environment. It would be easier if we could assume that the highest EPDs are the best. Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple. Like most decisions, using EPDs for sire selection involves tradeoffs. For example, bulls with high growth EPDs may sire calves with a higher birth weight as well. And there may be other impacts on your operation to consider. For example, when breeding heifers it is desirable to produce calves with lower birth weights, so a breeder may want to pay special attention to birth weight EPDs of prospective bulls. If all calves were sold as feeders, the milk EPD would generally not rate much attention. Yearling weight will be important if you want to ensure finished steers in the appropriate weight range.

It should also be kept in mind that reaction to selection can differ from trait to trait. This is because some traits have higher heritability than others, and are more easily passed to offspring. For instance growth traits such as weaning weight respond faster to selection, than reproductive traits such as age at first calving. A balance of traits is required, and the perfect balance for you will depend on your climate, nutritional and economic environment, as well as the management goals you have set for your herd. One way to select for several traits is to set minimum and maximum acceptable levels for each trait, and then choose sires that meet the criteria. Another method would be to rank all sires on each trait, then develop a weighted index which ranks each bull from one (most desirable) to five (least desirable) for each trait.

Producer 1 is looking for a sire that can be used on heifers; he wants a bull that will produce low birth weights and he wants to keep some heifer calves as replacements. Growth performance is not his first priority. The sire that fits his needs is sire D. He has a low birth weight EPD and above-average milk EPD.

Producer 3 has a herd of above-average-frame cows and is not planning on keeping heifers as replacements. She is looking for a bull that will give her the most profit at weaning. Sire A will give her the best result in weaning weight. If heifers are kept as replacements, they will, on average, be inferior for maternal milk.

Producer 2 has a sound breeding program; he is looking for a sire that will maintain performance and milking ability. He will select a bull that will increase growth performance and milk while maintaining calving ease. Sire B is his choice.

Producer 4 wants to maintain his calving performance and growth performance but would like to increase the milking ability in his females. Sire C is his choice.

DAM OF RED HEART VALLEY STOUT 17A

Here is your first opportunity to purchase a son of this great sire. All our bulls are from natural service and to this point we haven’t shared any sires through AI or otherwise. This will be the only chance to get one of these great offspring anywhere. We just love the style, performance and uniformity of his offspring. His sons are extreme in thickness and full of muscle with low birth weights and great performance, yet his daughters are as feminine and correct as they come. We can’t wait for them to get into production. RED HEART VALLEY STOUT 17A 10

DAM OF RED HEART VALLEY MAX 12C

Max 12C was born looking like a bull. Check the length and depth of this guy. We got some great shots of him as a calf, he was born with 106 lb BW but calves with this much volume and depth just can’t be born small. Max 12C has a 111 WW index and 110 YW index showing he carried his performance all the way. We have been using these kinds of bulls on cows with absolutely no calving problems and great results. Footer loves these and wasn’t happy to see this guy in the sale. This guy will have friends come sale day. As usual these guys will be available for viewing the night prior to the sale so stop by and check them out and do a bit socializing and home work. Use on cows.

Prospect 15C is another great Max 21Z son. This guy started off with a 90 lb BW and again lots of volume and length from the start. Prospect 15C was the #2 indexing bull at 739 lb adj 205-day weight to index 112 and #11 for yearling with a 109 index at 1237 adj 365-day weight. I just love these bulls that do great all the way. I said earlier that the Stouts would be the stars of the show but that remains to be seen with these kinds of Max 21Z sons to compete with. It will be fun to see. The Melody cow family has done a great job for us from day one. These Designer 64X daughters have great udders and milk very well. Not surprising as 64X’s dam is a direct Boomer 803 B daughter. Use on heifers of cows.

Eclipse 16C is one of the only two Eclipse sons selling as his sire suffered an injury on his first breeding season. This bull has lots of volume and depth. Started on the heavy side of things but grew very well. I would encourage some of you guys to try out some of these bigger BW bulls on your cows. The results are great with great vigour in your calves. They finish fast, like 14-15 months to the rail, grading mostly triple A with over 60% rail yield. These have been the extreme BW bulls we kept and used in the past on commercial cows but with such great results, this year, with a lower number of bulls, we figured we would offer them for you to try as well. Use on cow.

Stout 31C is, in my mind, one of the top bulls in this offering. Started out with an 86 lb BW, -2.9 BW EPD and indexed #2 (as well as Lot 15) at 112 for weaning weight and #3 for yearling, with a 122 index. This bull has style, muscle, depth, length and you name it. This guy could be a valuable asset to most purebred programs. It is not very often now day that you can buy a bull like this full possession and full interest. This guy rocks. These are the kind of Stout 17A sons I’m so impressed with. Use on heifers of cows.

Stout 35C is another Stout 17A son that has done an incredible job. Started with a 76 lb BW, indexed 106 for weaning to be 13 out of 47 and then went on to be the #1 indexing bull at 130 come yearling weights with a 1288 lb adj 365-day weight. His dam, a Rocket 30W Daughter is from none other than our Amanda cow family who produced our high selling bull last year. Her sire Rocket 30W is leaving us with a fabulous set of daughters who all have super udders and great milk. Between this bull and lot 31, it is a very interesting challenge to decide which is the best. It is no accident that these boys are so similar, they are ¾ brothers, both from 30W daughters as are many other good ones in here. Use on heifers of cows.

Right Answer 41C is a very deep bull and is as impressive to look at as his Sire. Reasonable BW, great growth 694 adj 205-day weight and 1179 adj 365-day weight. Remember theses bulls don’t get creep feed and go on silage and 10 lbs of oats until they return to pasture for the summer, then return to that ration until sale time. DAM OF HEART VALLEY JESSY 56C

Jessy 56C must be the largest bull in the sale. I really like him. He will be a machine when he gets full grown. Jessy has a 90 lb BW which I feel from his length, that is very reasonable. He indexed 104 at weaning with a 707 lb adj 205-day and 114 index for yearling with a 1216 lb adg 365-day weight. I believe that he will get it done for you. Use on heifers of cows. 36

Any complaints regarding breeding difficulties must be reported by the buyer to the seller within 6 months of the sale date. Any animal returned must be free from disease and in good health as we will not provide replacement or adjustment for physical injury or mismanagement. No credit values will be extended to future sales. Yearling bulls shall be guaranteed breeders for no more than 15 females. Two year olds guaranteed for no more than 25 females. We stress the importance of insurance on your bull. At no time shall the seller's liability exceed the purchase price of the bull. Insurance will be available on sale day. Aspen Hill Angus and Heart Valley Angus are not responsible for injury or loss once the bull has been sold. Announcements: Any announcements from the block take priority over catalogued material. Disputes: In case of dispute, bidding will be reopened between parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer's decision will be final. Health Status: All Aspen Hill/Heart Valley Angus bulls have been vaccinated with Express 5 modified live vaccine and also with Tasvax 8 vaccine which includes vaccine for Blackleg. They have all been treated for parasites.

For Bulls not picked up on sale day: If animals are to be kept at the colony after the sale, they must be paid for in full immediately after the sale unless previous arrangements have been made. Bull will be kept free of charge until the end of April. If you need to leave your animals behind for any longer, please make arrangements. A small charge will apply. We strongly encourage buyers to insure their purchases. We will manage them the same way after the sale as before the sale. We cannot be held responsible for purchases because accidents do happen. A $100 discount per animal will apply if taken home sale day.
