WELCOME TO OUR FIFTH ANNUAL BULL SALE

Welcome to our fifth annual event! First of all we would like to thank all who supported us in last year’s sale and all who attended. We would also like to thank all of the vendors who value our product and supported us with their advertising in our catalogue and in many other ways. And we always have to thank Allan Browarny for his exceptional work at capturing the great images of these meat machines and the exposure on Show Champions. And of course the ladies for putting on such a great meal every year.

"Every year I try to ensure that I own the slaughter cattle available from Birch Hills Colony. The cattle are consistently good performers for the kill plant. The combination of superior genetics and management practices make these cattle that some of the best property in the industry year in and year out." This year again, none of these bulls have seen anything but oats and silage. Last year these bulls were on the same 10 lbs. of oats and silage as yearlings. As always, we do not sell yearlings so these aren’t left over from last year. We feel that our program is working very well and offers exceptional carcass quality as we can prove it with our carcass data from finishing all the commercial calves and calculating the carcass information. These animals finish by the time they reach 14-15 months and grade 80% AAA with a 60% hung weight average. We invite everyone to stop by on March 4 to do some homework and some great socializing. All bulls will be on display for your viewing and if you would like to see them out in an alleyway, we highly recommend coming out the night before or early on sale day. I can never say enough about the great birth weights on these bulls for over 30 year now we have used no herd bulls that had over 90 lb BW and have to be very close or over 3.0 lbs/day gain with exceptional carcass. The bulls all have medium and very correct bone structure, they need to walk effortless and true.

All bulls don’t have the same performance but all of them are very correct and have lots to offer. The balance and uniformity on this set of bulls is great. There is no question that our program is working and getting better every year. A touch on management: Your new bulls, or your old bulls for that matter – We go to a lot of different places and talk to a lot of cattlemen and difference between ones ideal and the next on how bulls should be treated on the off season is huge. We all know that fat bulls fall apart and that skinny bulls don’t have a chance either and good breeders will breed rather that eat. I feel that it is very important to have a good ration for them that will have them in a 2/5 to 3.0 condition score, 1.0 being starved and 5.0 being over finished. Some people like to strip as much weight off their animals over the winter as they can, well I don’t see these same people going up and down 80 pounds depending on what season it is on their own weight, so why is this so great? I don’t seem to see many skinny bulls or cows laying down and chewing their cuds when it -30 C, but animals in good condition do. So my opinion is that animals let to get in 2.0 or less condition score will eat more over the winter and will keep going down as they never lay down and properly digest their food as the cows in better condition will spend more time digesting their food and less time eating. Remember that all herd bulls in our program bred heifers and cows and we strongly believe that this increases the predictability of our program. None the less, the advice on what would be safe to breed to what is simply my opinion and the best advice based on my knowledge of this herd.

UNDERSTANDING EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDS)

EPDs are useful tools when planning breeding programs. Attention should be paid to the heritability and correlations to the traits a breeder wants to improve upon within the herd. Some traits are more heritable than others resulting in faster progress being made in comparison to other less heritable traits. Also, many traits are correlated, wherein the trait is affected by the expression of several other traits. It is important to be aware of such logistics when developing selection criteria in a breeding program. Understanding the heritability and the effects of correlation between traits will aid in developing a genetic selection program that will optimize improvement on desired traits while minimizing undesirable side effects.

How to use EPDs in Sire Selection Each individual breeder must set his own selection goals based on the needs of his operation, the situation for that trait in his herd, and his production environment. It would be easier if we could assume that the highest EPDs are the best. Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple. Like most decisions, using EPDs for sire selection involves tradeoffs. For example, bulls with high growth EPDs may sire calves with a higher birth weight as well. And there may be other impacts on your operation to consider. For example, when breeding heifers it is desirable to produce calves with lower birth weights, so a breeder may want to pay special attention to birth weight EPDs of prospective bulls. If all calves were sold as feeders, the milk EPD would generally not rate much attention. Yearling weight will be important if you want to ensure finished steers in the appropriate weight range.

It should also be kept in mind that reaction to selection can differ from trait to trait. This is because some traits have higher heritability than others, and are more easily passed to offspring. For instance growth traits such as weaning weight respond faster to selection, than reproductive traits such as age at first calving. A balance of traits is required, and the perfect balance for you will depend on your climate, nutritional and economic environment, as well as the management goals you have set for your herd. One way to select for several traits is to set minimum and maximum acceptable levels for each trait, and then choose sires that meet the criteria. Another method would be to rank all sires on each trait, then develop a weighted index which ranks each bull from one (most desirable) to five (least desirable) for each trait.

Producer 1 is looking for a sire that can be used on heifers; he wants a bull that will produce low birth weights and he wants to keep some heifer calves as replacements. Growth performance is not his first priority. The sire that fits his needs is sire D. He has a low birth weight EPD and above-average milk EPD.

Producer 3 has a herd of above-average-frame cows and is not planning on keeping heifers as replacements. She is looking for a bull that will give her the most profit at weaning. Sire A will give her the best result in weaning weight. If heifers are kept as replacements, they will, on average, be inferior for maternal milk.

Producer 2 has a sound breeding program; he is looking for a sire that will maintain performance and milking ability. He will select a bull that will increase growth performance and milk while maintaining calving ease. Sire B is his choice.

Producer 4 wants to maintain his calving performance and growth performance but would like to increase the milking ability in his females. Sire C is his choice.

Check out the length and muscling on this guy, and he started with a 70 lb. birth weight. Note the Lassie cow family: these gals have been doing a great job for many years. This is one great example of what I call a balanced bull. He’s in the top 20% of the breed for all but 2 of his EPDs. Good for heifers or cows. BW

If you’re looking for a cow bull, stop looking right now because this guy is one machine. This bull would have the largest frame in the whole offering, yet he is loaded with muscle. A must see – it is guaranteed he will have friends on sale day. Good for cows.

WELL-TRAINED RANCH HORSES

WE'RE RAISING THE KIND OF HORSES WE WOULD LIKE TO BUY All of our horses start with the best bloodlines that we know of like Doc Bar, Shining Sparks, Smart Little Lena, Doc O'lena – just to mention a few! These horses are raised the natural way. They are all handled as foals, and keep getting attention until they are started as two year olds.

From there, we don't force them to do things. We make the right things possible and the wrong things difficult. By the time they are four, they are willing partners and that's when we recommend you buy them. They are for sale by private treaty. We offer a full year satisfaction guaranteed or your money back.
