AMBASSADOR MELISE EDWARDS
In 2007, Julie Kennedy approached long-time friend and outdoor industry guru Yvon Chouinard and pitched him an idea for an adventure film festival built around the power of story. Her pitch hit home and here we are today. Eleven years later, 5Point Film Festival has become an institution in this small mountain town we call home. 5Point is unique in that it does not simply share the stories of others; it empowers us to question our own lives and how we live them. For over a decade, this community gathering has taught, inspired and united us through the power of curated, soulful outdoor film, art and performance. Today, it continues to remind us that when we change, the whole world changes. Countless hours have been put into fine-tuning our program with a very specific intention: We’d like our partners and participants to emerge from this festival encouraged to be kind to others, respectful of the environment and inspired to get out and find their own adventure. No matter if you’re taking a jog around the neighborhood, skiing the nearest peak, getting wet in your local whitewater, or summiting Everest—collectively, these are our stories, our lands—and together, they make us better.
The 2018 5Point Film Festival brings another year of reliable favorites, as well as exciting new additions. Between films, we invite you to participate in a wide variety of live podcasting events led by industry experts from around the country. We’re delighted to partner with True Nature Healing Arts to bring you daily morning yoga at one of the most inspiring venues you’ll enjoy here in the Roaring Fork Valley. With a great variety of food vendors, a live art installation by local artist Sarah Uhl, tailgate parties and mingle events, you’ll find our Festival Headquarters a lively place to gather throughout the week. We recognize the power of community and where it has brought us. If it were not for an ambitious Julie Kennedy, an army of loyal volunteers and hard-working staff, sponsors, friends, partners, and filmmakers, we would not be celebrating our eleventh year. For all of you, we are truly and deeply grateful. From our family to yours, wishing you a joyful, inspiring festival.

5POINT 2018
As we look back on a tumultuous year of change, we’re reminded of the precarious balance of life. It is in the spirit of this delicate balance that we explore the wild places that inspire adventure and the people who fight to protect our shared lands. As national monuments and sacred places continue to come under threat, now more than ever, we see the urgency to act in the name of environmental preservation. Inspired by Hayden Kennedy’s passion to protect our public lands, this festival is dedicated to sharing the stories that may help shift public policy and rejuvenate the next generation of environmental activism. As we honor Hayden’s memory, we celebrate his embodiment of the 5Points—respect, commitment, humility, purpose and balance—and our shared commitment to a more sustainable future.

ART & ACTIVISM
A LIVE ART INSTALLMENT TO BENEFIT THE PROTECTION OF PUBLIC LANDS THROUGH THE HAYDEN KENNEDY FUND
ART & ACTIVISM
Sarah Uhl will create a live art installment at the 5Point Film Festival that pays tribute to our beloved Public Lands as seen through the eyes of the late Hayden Kennedy. A Carbondale native, HK was a spirited and adventurous soul who thrived in the mountains. His adventures were fueled not only by the places he explored as a climber, but also by the relationship he had with those places, the friends he shared them with–in particular his life partner Inge Perkins, who died in an avalanche in Montana shortly before Hayden's passing in October 2017–and his desire to protect them. Sarah will depict 10 of Hayden’s most beloved landscapes in a 45-piece mural, painted live over the course of the 4-day festival. Each piece of the mural will be for sale, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Hayden Fund.
10
The Hayden Fund was created to pay tribute to HK’s desire to protect our public lands. The fund, administered in conjunction with the Access Fund, Black Diamond, and Patagonia, will be utilized to support existing public land projects; to educate, engage, and activate the younger generation in public land advocacy; and to support creative adventure projects in favor of public land protection. Stop by the Rec Center lobby and show your support for the wild places by taking home a piece of this mural and donating to the Hayden Fund or by adding your story to the mural. HK lived by the mantra, “Respect the Wild Places.” May these paintings be a reminder of that attitude and the spirit of our beloved HK.

THE BIKES OF WRATH
32
(USA, 1:47) Producer: Cameron Ford Director: Cameron Ford WORLD PREMIERE EMCEE: STACY BARE
The Bikes of Wrath tells the story of five Australian friends as they attempt to cycle 1600 miles from Sallisaw, Oklahoma, to Bakersfield, California in honor of the mighty westward migration undertaken by The Grapes of Wrath’s Joad family. With an inordinate amount of self-belief, the cyclists set-off on their 30-day adventure with no training, no support vehicle and as one member puts it best, 'no real idea’. Burdened with trailers, musical instruments and camera equipment, the group set themselves the additional challenge of surviving on $420 (the modern-day equivalent of the Joads' $18 in the 1930s) and whatever their musical performances can yield. Riding 60 miles a day, the journey along America’s iconic Route 66 takes them from the farmlands of Oklahoma to the blistering Mojave Desert and countless places in-between; the diversity of landscapes is only matched by the assortment of characters they meet along the way.
Through these chance encounters with everyday Americans, the cyclists expand on the central themes of Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel: migration, inequality and the perceived land of opportunity. The group explores whether America has progressed since the book was written, discussing the wealth gap, immigration, and the American Dream. These vastly different small-town characters quickly become the central focus of the series, as well as integral to the group's success; letting the cyclists into their homes and demonstrating the startling parallels of The Grapes of Wrath 78 years after its publication. The Bikes of Wrath uncovers a deep insight into the human spirit and shines a positive light on America at a time when the world needs it most; all rolled into a unique, funny and life-affirming observational documentary series filled with adventure, literature, music and above all, human connection.
