WELCOME YES!!! We finally made it! If you’re reading this letter, it means we’re back to hosting our community for an in-person 5Point Flagship Festival in Carbondale. We’ve reached a milestone that I wasn’t sure seemed possible just three months ago when I first stepped into the Executive Director role. “It’s turnkey!” I was told in regards to getting the festival up and running again. However, after three years, much can be forgotten about how processes work. “What the hell have I gotten myself into?” was a thought that ran across my mind more than a few times. But working with a fantastic group - the 5Point team, the Board, and the Carbondale community - made me realize how much love and support there is for the organization. That was never in doubt. When I first accepted this position, I knew I was setting out on a personal and professional adventure by stepping outside of my comfort zone. I’ve been told this is how one grows as an individual. As you’ll see in our film programming, trying something new and pushing our limits will help us overcome many challenges. Given the last two years, and the current times we find ourselves in, we know there will be plenty to come that will test us. We have all wanted a return to normal since the beginning of the pandemic. Our world has changed so much over the last two decades, yet it was revealed how thin the thread is that holds it all together in the last two years. If there is anything I’ve learned, it’s how strong the need to connect with others is, how much we miss travel and exploration, and that you cannot quench the thirst for adventure with anything virtual. With the return of our in-person festival, we continue to champion the creative and authentic stories that 5Point has become known for. Now more than ever, we need great storytelling, and it is an honor to showcase the work of these remarkable filmmakers. The inspiration, creativity, pure joy, incredible athleticism, and the sheer entertainment of these programs will recharge you and keep you coming back for more. I’m honored to have been chosen to lead this organization into the future, and to work with its great team to bring you our 15th Flagship Festival. As it has been in the past, I hope 5Point continues to serve as a catalyst for positive change - in our community and others - through the shared experience of film and storytelling. Welcome to the 15th Annual 5Point Adventure Film Festival. Thank you for joining us on this adventure. I am humbled and deeply indebted to the entire 5Point community for being with us on this journey.

The 5Point Dream Project supports and encourages outstanding students who best exemplify 5Point’s guiding principles. Since receiving their awards, these students have embarked on their adventures, pushing themselves to grow as young adults, while giving back to the communities of the Roaring Fork Valley. EMMA BOUCHER is a senior who is meant to perform! For her Dream Project she engaged in Theater Aspen’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream project last summer. She said that “being in this performance, not only helped her grow as a Shakespearean actor, but simply as a performer and person.” She hopes this experience will be another stepping stone on her path to pursuing musical theater as a career and was beyond eager to share her passion of theater with the Roaring Fork Valley. EMMA HOSTETLER used art to inspire awareness and action towards societal problems that local teens are passionate about. She not only championed the creation of a mural painted for the public in New Castle, but she led a group of local teen artists through the process of storyboarding an issue they are passionate about and dedicating a section of the mural to that. This mural has no doubt left a local legacy of advocacy and justice for these young painters.

ANGELIKA MINOLI is a senior who dreamed of creating a documentary about the refugee crisis in her native Greece. As part of her dream project, she created a short film where she interviewed individual refugees as well as captured information from Greek government officials. Her project aimed at presenting a complete picture of the refugee situation and the overall impact that COVID-19 has had on this already vulnerable group.

As such, with the help of the Carbondale Rec. center, Makai created a free program for underserved middle school students in the valley that taught them how to rock climb over a two-day period in March. His goal was to show these students how climbing can be a great way to explore the world around them and connect with a healthy outdoor community.

ELLIE URFRIG & WILLA SCHENDLER have spent the last year bringing awareness for environmental causes to their senators and representatives. They have used their grant to organize monthly meetings of their environmental club and plan to take a trip in May to the State Capitol in Denver to lobby on the surrounding environmental issues that affect us all.

Have you ever woken up one morning and decided to share a picture of your cellulite and untoned stomach with 50,000+ people on social media? Ya, us neither, but legendary climber Beth Rodden started to do this weekly. “This is Beth” is an intimate character-piece celebrating a vulnerable side of professional climber Beth Rodden: from young, send-at-allcosts athlete, to a mother determined to ‘normalize normal’ when it comes to our bodies and happiness. Weaving Beth’s new, playful approach to climbing on the boulders of Yosemite with sequences of daily life, archive and interview, this short film explores Beth’s remarkable journey towards finding self contentment and changing the outlook on body image in the climbing community.

FINDING HETCH HETCHY

DIRECTORS : James ‘Q’ Martin & Chris Burkard PRODUCERS : Sheila Smithson & Mike Sandifer

(USA, 10 min)

Yosemite Valley is well-known as the epicenter of American climbing. Its sister valley to the north, has long been left in the shadows of Yosemite’s reputation. The Hetch Hetchy Valley, similarly home to towering granite walls and the majestic beauty for which the Sierra is known, stays well out of the limelight despite being part of Yosemite National Park. This is in part because of the controversy surrounding The Hetch Hetchy Reservoir and it being the source of San Francisco’s water supply. Follow veteran Yosemite climber Timmy O’Neill, as he discovers the beauty and conflict of Hetch Hetchy.

JO ANNA EDMISON & VAL LAFORGE PROJECT: CARVIN CALIFORNIA

25-year-old California native skateboarder, Val LaForge, has an unmatched drive for pushing both her physical and mental boundaries. Her attraction to adventure has

36

carved the pathway for her most recent endeavor- to solo skateboard from her home town of Sebastopol to her new home in Venice Beach, CA. With the 500+ miles that lie between two of her most treasured places, she is challenged by the natural elements while she pushes confidently against others’ doubt. Through her radiant energy and contagious smile the audience is guided through a journey with Val, her board, and the infamous highway that connects coastal California. RYAN ERNSTES

PROJECT: DIAGONAL

Like many others, the year 2020

shook things up for 54-year old India Wood. Tired by her day job, and feeling the strain of the increased political polarization of America, Wood set out on a unique journey: hiking diagonally across Colorado to meet those she wouldn’t normally connect with. After nearly two years of rest and reflection, Wood is ready to go back, this time to hike the state’s other diagonal: from the southwest corner of the state to the northeast corner. While the purpose of Wood’s first journey was to connect with people, this time Wood wants to connect with nature and the animals along the way. Like before, she wants to experience the state in its entirety; not just the pretty landmarks that go on a postcard for the Rocky Mountain state.

TAYLOR REES

MARA WHITEHEAD & RALEIGH GAMBINO PROJECT: ARCTIC HIVE

In the frosted abyss of Alaska we meet prosnowboarder Sean Busby. His leathered hands and thick beard are tell-tales of his fortitude. Not only is he braving the harsh winter conditions of his off-grid home, but the even harsher effects of Type 1 Diabetes and an auto-immune disease called Lupus. In his lifetime, he has defied many odds by traveling the world and snowboarding some of the most remote and stunning peaks in the world. But as his health risks grow with age, Busby is faced with a poor prognosis and a fork in the road. A life without snowboarding or no life at all.

Taylor is a documentary filmmaker and avid explorer of stories and landscapes, natural resource issues and above all else, the human heart. Her focus is bringing new perspectives and deeper public understanding to the complexities of climate change, conservation, human rights, environmental justice and extractive industries. What matters to her most are the people within these stories and their own experience of co-creating those narratives, breaking away from traditionally extractive forms of storytelling.

FESTIVAL HOSTS PADDY O’CONNELL

Paddy (but you can call him PaddyO) works in the outdoor industry as a word nerd and a professional chit chatter—which essentially means he is a freelance writer, creator, storyteller, voice over talent, and multimedia producer. PaddyO believes in the power of storytelling as a vehicle for connection and positive change. Much of his work and his every day reflects the theory that laughter is the soundtrack to a happy life. He loves to use humor to arrive at poignancy in his work, while also focusing on cause-based storytelling and reporting, most notably and personal to him are suicide prevention and mental health, addiction, alcoholism, and recovery, equity and inclusion, and stories of a dark past being transformed into a hopeful future. When he’s not practicing Footloose inspired dance moves, Patrick Swayze-esque hair flips, and grooming his mustache to resemble Tom Selleck’s lip caterpillar, PaddyO can be found in the mountains— mostly likely being a bit loud and doing something a lot weird. He is based out of Carbondale, Colorado. Check out his latest work and current haps at www.paddyroc.com.

He is Executive Editor of Wilderness Magazine. He is also co-founder of Byta, a travel mug designed to promote a reusable economy.

DANI REYESACOSTA

Once Dani left cushy corporate life to find her way back to her Latina-AAPI roots, she ticked rock climbs and ski lines across Argentina, Chile, Canada, and the USA on a circuitous path to self-determination—finding, in the process, her calling to advocate for a just transition and “everyone outside.” As a storyteller, professional athlete, and strategic advisor, she’s rewriting the narrative of who plays outside and how we build community with others on this planet. ABOUT THE FESTIVAL ARTIST LINDSAY JONES Lindsay is a Carbondale based artist, originally from the metro area of Kansas City, MO. Her whimsical drawings and paintings move fluidly between artwork you can hold in your hand, to images and animations that only exist in the digital world. She has a hunter/gatherer approach to her creative process, often collaging together ideas and making work out of discarded, or salvaged materials. Lindsay’s art thrives on her experiences spent in the outdoors; exploring new places, and taking the time to slowly absorb her natural surroundings. Her work frequently unites the cynical with the phenomenal, transforming those ideas into playfully charming images, with an ominous undertone. For the return of this year’s in-person festival, Lindsay focused the official artwork on our beloved Mt. Sopris, and the dark night sky that we are lucky enough to see here in Carbondale. The artwork repeats the highest peaks of Sopris fifteen times, in honor of this year’s 15th flagship festival. na j o n aya n
