The 5Point Film Festival is built on five guiding principles: respect, commitment, humility, purpose and balance. We believe these same principles also form the foundation for individuals who lead lives of adventure and connect all of us who share an elemental passion to explore and expand our boundaries.

Oh, the places we will go... From the Valley of Keketuohai to the Canadian Arctic to the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, the fourth annual 5Point Film Festival will take you there. Prepare to visit wild, wondrous places, through the lens and through the imaginations of our talented filmmakers.

An unprecedented level of collaboration, connection and creativity provide the fuel for this year’s festival. The power of story is revealed in Jeremy Collins’ The Wolf and the Medallion on Saturday night, our keynote presentation and world premiere scored to live music (with an encore screening on Sunday). Renowned artist Vik Muniz paints a moving picture in Waste Land, and three very brave Scandinavians, the Baffin Babes, tell tall tales of 80 days in the Arctic. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg... Throughout the festival, you will be transported to new places in unexpected ways. The 5Point Gallery Show continues this spring with “the more i see...” exhibit by our featured photographer, Cory Richards, on display at Phat Thai on Main Street, April 6 − May 1. Don’t pass up the chance to gather ‘round the proverbial campfire during our first-ever Campfire Stories event on Saturday for intimate “Adventures From the Edge and Back” shared by some of our festival guests. 5Point’s inaugural Dream Project scholarship winners will also be on hand. A real dream of mine since the beginning, the Dream Project enables Valley youth to follow their outdoor passions. Three outstanding high school recipients will soon embark on adventures around the world.

On the edge between desire and fear, between the known and unknown, is a place deep inside us all where the spirit is transformed — pushed beyond its limit by our deliberate commitment to usher in something new and original. In this soulful place we are catalyzed to learn, expand and engender newfound understanding to inspire others on their journeys. It is this spirit, this thirst for adventure that the 5Point Film Festival celebrates and shares with the community and filmmakers that gather for its annual Festival in Carbondale.

This year, and every year, the 5Point Film Festival would not be possible without the shared vision of Patagonia. The 5Point Film Festival is proud to announce the 5Point Dream Project, a scholarship program to support and encourage Roaring Fork Valley youth to explore the outdoors and live a life of passion. In this inaugural year, we have chosen three outstanding recipients, high school students who best exemplify 5Point’s guiding principles. Within the next year they will embark on adventures around the world with the financial and moral support of the 5Point Film Festival and our sponsors. Special thanks to

2011 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS Weaver Froelicher Weaver is a student at the Colorado Rocky Mountain School and his passion is whitewater kayaking. His application was full of spirit and so with his Dream Project funds he will travel to Uganda to conduct malaria education and teach local villagers how to kayak. JJ Worley JJ is a senior at the Colorado Rocky Mountain School and her passion is giving back and connecting with different cultures. Her “Dream Project” will be for her to travel to Costa Rica, live with a family, coach soccer and learn indigenous farming and cooking techniques. Her humility and gratitude for life is why she was chosen as a Dream Project winner. Andrew Bair Andrew a student at Bridges High School, is a 7th generation Basalt native with outdoor living in his heritage. His “Dream Project” is to establish an outdoor program for other students at his school and spread the impact of the wilderness to those who have not had the opportunity. Andrew showed deep respect for nature and maturity in thinking of others, which is why we chose him as a scholarship winner. the more i see...is a collection of Tibetan Buddhist portraits which attempts to tell a simple story. Captured by this year’s featured photographer, Cory Richards, these works engage the viewer at an intersection of truth and imperfection, where truth exists only so far as one is willing to engage his/her imagination. It’s where the more you see, the less you know.

Life Cycles tells a spectacular story that celebrates the life and times of the bicycle. Using Ultra HD cameras and experimental film techniques, filmmakers Ryan Gibb and Derek Frankowski spent three years documenting stories surrounding the mountain bike and its culture. In 2009, four Scandinavian girls experienced an extraordinary winter adventure on Baffin Island located in the Canadian Arctic. The girls, who call themselves the Baffin Babes, spent a quarter of a year travelling 1,200 km on skis and pulling sleds weighing 120 kg. All the way from Scandinavia, the girls are here at 5Point to share their memories from this remarkable trip. Academy Award nominee for Best Feature Documentary Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they create photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. special guest highlights SKIP ARMSTRONG Skip is an award-winning filmmaker who has created for National Geographic, The Associated Press, Patagonia and more. In 2011 he won Best Short Film at the National Paddling Film Festival, the Reel Paddling Film Festival and the Portland Whitewater Film Festival.

BAFFIN BABES: Vera, Emma + Ingebjoerg Vera, Emma and Inga are coming to Carbondale from Norway and Sweden to share their hilarious and extreme stories from 80 days spent touring across Baffin Island. Vera is a true outdoor enthusiast who spends most of her days guiding under the open sky. Emma is the most socially engaged in the bunch and leads the ladies with her mediator skills. Ingebjoerg is also a lover of outdoors and is the highly organized and efficient one of the group.

FITZ CAHALL Fitz is a man of many talents and deep connection to nature. He is also the outdoor industry’s storyteller. Fitz, who brought us The Season: Jonaven’s Close Call in 2010, produces a weekly podcast entitled The Dirtbag Diaries.

original scraper bike king Legendary East Oakland native as well as founder, CEO and program director of the world famous Original Scraper Bike Movement, Baybe Champ (Tyrone Stevenson, Jr.) is the Original Scraper Bike King. He started a member organization/non-profit that supports youth in his neighborhood to fix up and ride bicycles instead of getting involved with gangs and drugs.

JEREMY COLLINS Jeremy is an artist with a vertical perspective. At the forefront of climbing-inspired art for the last twelve years, his work is seen in every issue of Rock & Ice and Alpinist magazines. With five co-authored books to his credit, he penned his first solo book, INTUT10N, in 2009. Collins’ editorial illustrations and animations have been seen in the Wall Street Journal , MSNBC.com, and Forbes, among others.

AARON GARLAND A notable high school teacher in the Roaring Fork Valley, Aaron approaches the classroom every day with a belief in creativity, adventure and following one’s heart. He has inspired many in our community and continues to bring humor and soul to any room he enters.

RYAN GIBB A filmmaker who loves the outdoors, Ryan Gibb would like nothing more than to ride his bike in the summer and snoodle (ski) in the winter. Film school educated, he hopes to bring something a little different to his film, Life Cycles.

BEN KNIGHT + TRAVIS RUMMEL Ben Knight and Travis Rummel are the masterminds behind the films from Felt Soul Media (2009 Best of the Festival winner Red Gold; 2010 Best Cinematography winner Scattered Flurries). Both Knight and Rummel have achieved amazing success for their respected eye for beautiful shots and for finding stories with a depth rarely found in most adventure films.

PETER MCBRIDE Born and raised in the Roaring Fork Valley, Peter McBride is an awardwinning photojournalist and now, a filmmaker. His work has been in such publications as National Geographic, Men’s Journal, Sports Illustrated, Outside, The New York Times, Skiing and many others.

TIMMY O’NEILL Timmy O’Neill is best known for his irreverent humor and quick wit, along with being America’s most outrageous climber. He has set “gob-smacking” speed climbing records from Yosemite to Patagonia, and has been at the cutting-edge of the sport for over 15 years.

RENAN OZTURK As a professional climber, artist and filmmaker, Renan brings depth and soul to the climbing community. Renan lives in Boulder, Colorado, and travels around the world in pursuit of his climbing and filming adventures.

RYAN PETTERSON When Ryan was a kid, adults would ask him what he wanted to do when he grew up. As a joke he would answer, “Get paid to travel around the world and go fishing.” Now that pretty much describes what he does. He is dreading the day when dark suited men in sunglasses knock on his door and say, “Son, we figured out your scam. You need to come with us.”

CORY RICHARDS Based in Boulder, Colorado, Cory is dedicated to the creation of the most gripping, engaging and exciting imagery for outdoor advertising and editorial applications. Cory’s philosophy—for the company and his photography—is simple: be inspired by what you see, and share it. His photos are about being in the moment, living life to its fullest, and inspiring others to do the same.

NICK ROSEN Nick is the voice of Sender Films, the creators of 5Point favorites like The Sharp End and First Ascent. He is a partner, writer, producer and secretly a film star (check out the documentary Enlighten Up!).

JAKE SAKSON Jake grew up in the Roaring Fork Valley. Childhood summers were spent kayaking, climbing and mountain biking around the West with the Kennedy family. An enthralled telemark skier, he spent this last winter living out of a backpack and ski bag chasing powder. As long as snow continues to fall and he can find a somewhat level place to rest his bones, that’s not going to change anytime soon.

FRANK SMETHERHURST A pillar of the fly fishing world, Frank is a man of many talents, keeper of many jobs and chock full of humor. He has hosted fly fishing television shows, guided rivers around the world, and now is more domesticated living with his wife and daughter in Boulder. He is sure to have you rolling on the floor laughing.

MICKEY SMITH Dark Side of the Lens has been dubbed “the best thing on the internet” and seen over one million times. Mickey’s vision for this film was “to create something that would give insight into what it takes to grind out a living as a water-based photographer, to provide a short, experimental glimpse into life lived in the shadow of what is, for me, an obsessive pursuit.”

ANSON FOGEL Hailing from Carbondale, Colorado, Anson is quickly becoming a decorated adventure filmmaker. Since shooting stills and motion as a child, his interest was initially sparked by his godfather’s darkroom, his family’s love of wild places, and the overwhelming effect film has for a kid in a small rural western town.

NICK WAGGONER Nick was born in a back-alley dumpster in New York City and quickly learned how to talk himself out of arrest and into opportunity. Shyness and modesty were not rewarded in the big city, so Nick lends his urban-tempered initiative to Sweetgrass Productions as director/producer. Behind the lens, Nick uses his Colorado College BA in Documentary Film to tell stories through poetic rhythm and soulful narrative.

t h e JU RY LAUREN CERRE Lauren is an Emmy Award nominated producer. Her news documentaries for Current TV’s “Vanguard Journalism Series” have covered topics including the growing neoNazi movement in Russia, deforestation in Madagascar and the billion dollar blue fin tuna trade in Japan. Her work has also won her Columbia Journalism School’s prestigious Alfred l. DuPont Award, a National Headliner Award and a Webby Award.

KENT HARVEY Kent is a cinematographer and director/cameraman with a specialty in shooting action and lifestyle. His work includes shooting action sequences on major Hollywood feature films to filming commercials, documentaries and branding campaigns on the world’s highest mountains.

CICI KINNEY Cici’s growing years were spent skiing in Aspen every day in the winter and running around the mountains during the summer. After college, she returned to the slopes, worked in local restaurants, skied every day and worked at night. Then, she made a break working with a professional photographer and became coordinating manager for many national campaigns for 25 years. In between, she had two beautiful children. Her passion is the outdoors, and she continues to be in awe of the mountains that remain her home.

JAKE NORTON Jake is a climber, photographer, and speaker as well as a husband and father of two children. He’s climbed and shot around the world, from the summit of Everest and other high Himalayan peaks to the deserts of Africa and the glaciers of South Georgia. Jake is also a mountain historian, having made discoveries on Everest as part of the 1999, 2001 and 2004 Mallory & Irvine Research Expeditions and working closely with the American Mountaineering Museum. Jake and his family live in Golden, Colorado.
