ON THE ROAD: PHOTOGRAPHY + ART EXHIBIT by Carl Zoch and Sarah Uhl It turns out life can be pretty rich while you’re living out of a Honda Element and traveling across the Wild West. Sarah and Carl will never forget the people they met along the way, all the odd places they slept or the taste of tailgate burritos made ten paces from the Oregon Coast. These photographs, paintings, and sketches are remnants of the journey, inspired by the same beauty but captured through different eyes. For a deeper look, please visit carlzoch.com + sarahuhl.com. Bonfire Coffee Free entry
DREAM ON ART EXHIBITION Dream On is an art exhibition featuring artists whose work illuminates and manifests all facets of the dream spectrum, from imaginative and fantastical imagery, to subconscious and dreamlike explorations, to soul-searching and soul-finding revelations. The whole idea of dreaming (sleeping or not) is often about questioning concepts of “reality,” pushing boundaries, and opening up a deeper conversation about our day-to-day existence. PARTICIPATE + GET INVOLVED
Participation and involvement are two things we believe in; two things that make a community strong and vibrant. When you can inspire someone to get outdoors, experience their place through their passions, they will naturally want to protect this experience and get involved. We are helping our audiences not only become inspired for their own adventure, but encouraging and connecting them with opportunities in their communities to get involved. More information and sign ups (for select activities) available at the Patagonia booth at the Carbondale Rec Center starting Thursday 4/24 and before each program through Saturday. WELCOME OUR 5 POINTS The 5Point Film Festival is built on five guiding principles: respect, commitment, humility, purpose, and balance. We believe these same principles also form the foundation for individuals who lead lives of adventure and connect all of us who share an elemental passion to explore and expand our boundaries.
LETTER FROM THE 5POINT CREW Welcome to the 7th annual 5Point Film Festival. We are stoked you are joining us for four days of inspiring stories and engaging conversation. 5Point continues to grow and evolve and it is our aim to continue to push you to your edges, help you find the horizon line, and give you the throttle to blow past it. Through thought-provoking films, presentations, and special guests that embody our 5 Guiding Principles, we will help you discover what adventure means to you, connect you with opportunities to get involved in the things you care about most, and move you in ways you never thought possible. Are you ready? Last year was filled with new characters and new adventures. 5Point hit the road over the summer, producing outdoor film events in Bellingham, Bozeman, Boise, Bend, Boston, Steamboat Springs, and Fort Collins. What amazing communities to introduce the 5Point experience to! We hope that some of those folks have journeyed here to enjoy the real thing.
RESPECT For each other, for the environment, for the experience and for the knowledge we inherit from those who inspire and teach us.
COMMITMENT To overcome fear and give ourselves completely to the challenge at hand while leading a vital existence and never allowing ourselves to become complacent.
HUMILITY To assume the courage and the discipline to listen to our intuition and not our egos, always mindful of our place in the natural order.
PURPOSE To muster the motivation and conviction necessary to pursue our highest aspirations in the face of adversity.
BALANCE To maintain our focus and energy in life, in nature and on the journeys we undertake while things we cannot control shift around us.
OUR MISSION The 5Point Film Festival inspires adventure of all kinds, connects generations through shared experience and respect, engages passion with a conscience and educates through film. On the edge between desire and fear, between the known and unknown, is a place deep inside us all where the spirit is transformed—pushed beyond its limit by our deliberate commitment to usher in something new and original. In this soulful place we are catalyzed to learn, expand and engender newfound understanding to inspire others on their journeys. It is this spirit, this thirst for adventure, that the 5Point Film festival celebrates and shares with the community and filmmakers that gather for its annual Festival in Carbondale.
This year we have over 50 short films and 35 special guests in attendance from all over the world. It takes more hours than the days allow and an army of volunteers to bring this incredible weekend together, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the support of our partners, friends, and community. Thank you. There are some new facets to the Festival this year. Inspired by last year’s collaboration between Wade Newsom and Jeremy Collins on the spoken word performance Participate, we’ve organized a new series of activities throughout the weekend. The Participate activities are recreational in nature—running, biking, skiing, getting out there. The Get Involved activities are ways for our local community and guests to connect their passions with action through our local and national non-profit community. All activities are free—more information can be found on page 5 of this program. Don’t miss our community parties throughout the weekend starting with the Kick-Off Party and Van Life Rally on Thursday, April 24, at 5 pm. Each of these gatherings—on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday—are free at the Carbondale Rec Center. Local food and Sierra Nevada brews will be available for purchase. Along with yard games, live music, and art demonstrations, these gatherings are a way to connect our community, greet our neighbors, and meet the special guests and visitors. Let’s show these folks how Carbondale does community! As the 5Point Crew put all the pieces and films together for the festival this year, we couldn’t help but feel the word intuition creeping up in conversation. We climb mountains and rock faces, descend unknown cascading rivers, and ultimately guide our exploration and lives with our intuitive self. The little voice, the uneasy feeling, the guttural communication that keeps us safe—we don’t always give intuition enough credit. Sometimes we choose not to listen to it at all, and that can lead to some compromising moments out there. The stories that emerge from this festival weave a thread of intuitive exploration. Our hope is that this example inspires a discovery of your own intuition and perhaps, even, that you uncover your next adventure with us. Cheers, The 5Point Film Crew Julie Kennedy Sarah Wood Anders Nordblom Sarah Uhl Jake Marty + Tracy Wilson
We are all ambassadors of the environment. 5Point FIlm Festival inspires us to explore wild places and to return with a renewed vigor and responsibility to protect our natural world. 5Point Film Festival is a 501(c)3 non-profit and is a proud member of 1% for the Planet.

2014 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS JULIETTE MOFFROID Juliette, a senior at the Colorado Rocky Mountain School, will be backpacking the John Muir Trail, capturing the inspiration she finds along the way by making art prints. In an effort to give back, Juliette plans to sell these prints and donate the money to trail convervation organizations that are dedicated to preserving these wild places.
FIONA LAIRD Fiona, a sophomore at Roaring Fork High School, wants to create an outdoor courtyard at her high school. Her goal is to use this space, which will include an area with plants, trees and tables, as a place where students and faculty can enjoy the outdoors while also connecting with each other.
LIAM KELLY Liam, a senior at Bridges High School, is an Eagle Scout who is seeking ways to give back to his community. He plans to support the greater Carbondale area by fulfilling his dream of purchasing and training himself on amateur radio emergency communications systems. He will also be building and installing a solar array in order to power his radio system, making it self sufficient.
NIC REITMAN Nic, a senior at Colorado Rocky Mountain School, a native Russian speaker, and aspiring alpinist, is going to the country of Georgia to work on a trail conservation crew. While he is there he plans to climb the majestic Mt. Kazbek, among others, with the support of a local guide service.
ROTCEH VAZQUEZ Rotceh, a junior at Colorado Rocky Mountain School, is starting a deaf camp for local kids. Her goal is to become fluent in American sign language, and use this to bridge the gap between the deaf and non-hearing impaired communities of the Roaring Fork Valley.

T H E 2 0 1 3 D R E A M P R O J E C T R E C I P I E N T S …W H E R E A R E T H E Y N O W ? ? DIANA BANKS Last summer Diana traveled to Luang Prabang, Laos to serve as an English teacher for Novice Monks—in return, she was able to observe and experience the lifestyle of the novices living in the temples, all with the hopes of applying their ideals to how she manages and values her own life. While on a search for a different kind of balance, Diana found a drastically different perspective that now lets her see her world with a new appreciation and attitude for the kind of motivation, ease, and mindfulness that the novices showed her. Diana is wrapping up her first year at Washington and Lee University in Virginia. WILL SARDINSKY After graduating from CRMS last spring, Will spent his summer shooting photos of the Thompson Divide area outside of Carbondale. He captured compelling images of the local wilderness to fight against the development of this beautiful landscape. Not only did Will showcase this area, he gained valuable experience about the major pros and cons of seriously pursuing a career in photography. Currently Will is attending Colorado College in Colorado Springs and is still deeply passionate about issues surrounding the development of the Thompson Divide area.
ANNE MARIE LEWIS Anne-Marie travelled to the Bolivian Amazon where she joined the Shoulder-To-Shoulder program and worked alongside local communities to help establish clean water systems. Her trip opened her eyes to the imbalance of wealth in the communities she worked in. Her biggest life lesson was the realization that though these communities were struggling due to their impoverished lifestyle, happiness still prevailed in the faces of the kids she met. Her Dream Project continues to effect how she views the world and her own privileges. WILL MASTERS Will attended Alfred University’s renewable engineering camp in New York City. There he had the opportunity to learn alongside likeminded, engaged peers from experienced and leading industry professionals. With a balance of classroom presentations and hands-on design, building and testing, he worked in a team to create a wind turbine and a small PV-powered car from their own designs. With his Dream Project concluded, Will now has the knowledge to give his passion for renewable energy a real driving force and direction.
GRIFFEN ROWE-GADDIS With a passion for helping others in need and for the Portuguese language, Griffen travelled to Sao Paulo, Brazil, and worked with underprivileged youth in Favelas. He made a direct connection with a small youth center that helps children develop academically and as individuals. During his time in Sao Paulo, Griffen was also fortunate enough to stay with a high income family. From this perspective, he was able to see two sides of the socioeconomic spectrum that he had never seen before, enabling him to “finally comprehend the true meaning of economic inequality” and to appreciate his life.

Ben Knight, Travis Rummel + Matt Stoecker This powerful film odyssey across America explores the sea change in our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to the growing awareness that our own future is bound to the life and health of our rivers. Where obsolete dams come down, rivers bound back to life, giving salmon and other wild fish the right of return to primeval spawning grounds, after decades without access. DamNation’s majestic cinematography and unexpected discoveries move through rivers and landscapes altered by dams, but also through a metamorphosis in values, from conquest of the natural world to knowing ourselves as part of nature. F E AT U R E D O U T D O O R P H OTO G R A P H E R S GARRETT GROVE
During his first summit up Mt. Baker in college seeing the sun rise after an alpine start and all the color and fear that goes with it, Garret Grove captures the moment with his Canon Rebel 35mm film camera...the photos kind of sucked, but he has kept them all these years. To Garrett, they were meaningful shots because they represent the start of an all encompassing passion. Those photos were the first time he realized the power that capturing those moments can have on the people he shares them with. Now, flash forward 11 years and he is lucky enough to have photography as his profession and bases much of his life around the outdoors and the people who love it. garretgrove.com
CARL ZOCH Carl once lived in Hood River, Oregon until he got the bright idea to get rid of his things and live out of his Honda Element. Traveling around the Western US and Canada, Carl photographs various assignments and partakes in adventurous shenanigans along the way. He photographs anything and everything that fits into the context of this life being enjoyed. See more at carlzoch.com
F E AT U R E D A R T I STS TRINA ORTEGA A native of Colorado, Trina has been playing in the dirt of the Centennial State since she was a kid. When she’s not fulfilling her duties as the managing editor of Mountain Flyer magazine, she is always on the make for the next challenging creative endeavor.
MICHAEL LINDSAY Michael Lindsay plays and works in Carbondale, Colorado. The mountains are his constant source of humbling inspiration. Michael is committed to contributing sculpture to his community that tells the story of the experience of life in the mountain west. BEN KNIGHT Ben likes cats, sugar, bikes, cameras, trucks, bacon, ketchup, sleep, friends, and Japanese mayonnaise. He makes little movies sometimes because it feels right and lives in a small mountain town because that feels right too. He hates flossing, but is trying to embrace its importance.
BEN MOON Ben Moon is a self-taught adventure, lifestyle, and music photographer and filmmaker. Surviving cancer at a young age instilled a deep appreciation for every moment and allowed for greater connection with the inspiring individuals he documents, and the beauty of the environment around him.

His true passion is being in the outdoors with friends and sharing motivation to see others succeed, but at the same time he loves the competitions. With countless national and international titles, Daniel has just scratched the surface with where his climbing achievements will go.
GEORGE KNOWLES When George isn’t riding the deep pow in Hokkaido, or tromping around remote places in Chile with his camera, he is at home in Denver with his dirt bike and computer, editing together all the amazing footage he captured into story. George grew up in Telluride and in addition to freelance work, and Goodie Pocket Projects, George also is a filmer/editor for SixEleven Productions.

JOEY SCHUSLER Joey Schusler grew up as a professional mountain bike racer and has matured into an accomplished filmmaker. His experience on both sides of the lens enables him to understand the point of view of the filmmaker and the subject like few others. His love for filmmaking spurred his desire to share stories and adventure with others—and continues to motivate his work. Where’s Joey? Look for the big yellow school bus.
KAI LIGHTNER In 2006, six-year-old Kai Lightner walked into The Climbing Place in Fayetteville, NC and discovered the world of rockclimbing. That year he began competing in the USA Climbing organization, and attended his first Sport Climbing Series National Competition in 2007. In August 2013, he competed in his first IFSC Youth World championship against the top climbers from around the globe, placing 4th in his age category (14-15).
KATIE LEE Katie Lee is one of the Southwest’s most outspoken environmental activists. Like David Brower and Ed Abbey, Katie has taken up the torch they left burning—to sing, write and lecture about the importance of preserving and restoring wilderness refuges; the lonesome characters the West still breeds; and the histories of ancient races embedded in its sinuous sandstone canyons. Today, her unwavering commitment to her principles and feisty eloquence are primarily directed at draining Powell Reservoir and letting the Colorado River once again run free.
KELLY CORDES Adhering to a life-long avoidance of full-time work, Kelly specializes in margaritas, maximizing outdoor time and climbing alpine-style routes. This minimalism influences his climbing, which includes the first ascent of the Azeem Ridge in “disaster style.” Professionally, a stint at Pizza Hut (flexible hours, free leftovers) led to years of shack dwelling, which, somehow, led to a living climbing and writing.
MIKAL JAKUBAL Mikal Jakubal is an avid river runner and outdoor enthusiast, first-time documentary filmmaker, former ski bum and mountaineer, and lover of all things internet. Mikal lives in Humboldt County, California, and is known for humorous activism and dams with paint phrase.

He has also worked for Smithsonian, Outside, Esquire, and many others including commercial clients such as Casio, Bose, and Patagonia.
RICKEY GATES Professional runner, published writer and photographer, Rickey Gates has spent the past decade exploring the planet on two wheels and two feet. The Roaring Fork Valley native has ridden a motorcycle from Alaska to Patagonia, pedaled across Europe, run on every continent ... ever in search of the answer to the question: “What makes us happy?”
SKIP ARMSTORNG Skip Armstrong’s eyes will melt your soul, his editing will jumpstart your heart, and his voice would draw wayward ships to crash along the rocky shores of Baja, California. Did we mention he can dance? Skip is an award-winning director and cinematographer and founder of Wazee Motion Pictures. His passion is wild and creative short films and advertising.
TRAVIS RUMMEL Despite being a co-founder of Felt Soul Media, Travis Rummel never planned on becoming a filmmaker. However, storytelling ran in his family and soaked in for good. When Travis and Ben Knight witnessed the true power of film at Telluride Mountainfilm Festival, they decided on a partnership centered around creating documentaries that they believed in. DamNation is their most recent story, told through incredible interviews and cinematography.

PENN NEWHARD Penn Newhard’s decision to leave his Wall Street bond trader job in 1989 and relocate to Colorado led him to a renaissance ski bum lifestyle. This, in turn, led him to his next job as the Advertising Director at Climbing Magazine in 1992. Just five years later, Penn founded Backbone Media, which specializes in social media, PR, and media planning. Most recently, Penn co-authored 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America with Chris Davenport and Art Burrows. Penn now lives in a log cabin in Aspen, Colorado, with his wife, Kirsten, and four tow-head kids.
RICHARD FULLER Richard Fuller is the President of the Alpine Bank in Carbondale, and has been for the past 13 years. While he enjoys all outdoor activities, he spends most of his time on a mountain bike, road bike, or dirt bike during the summer months. In the winter, he splits his time between a snowboard and a pair of cross-country skis. Richard is passionate about landscape photography, and would always prefer to be behind the lens as opposed to behind the desk.
JEANNE MACKOWSKI With more than 18 years of experience in the ski/ outdoor industry, Jeanne Mackowski recently traded her dream job as Vice President of Marketing at Aspen Skiing Company for a more balanced life of skiing, riding, running, and playing with her children, Grace and Curtis, and her husband, Len. BRIAN EMERSON Brian has worked in television for nearly 20 years focusing on action and adventure sports. He has traveled extensively while creating content, eating weird food, and participating in activities that seemed like a good idea at the time. He is currently a producer at Outside Television where he brings the world’s most inspiring adventure documentaries to the network’s audience. He has a passion for being in the mountains, chewing up single track, and life in Maine.
JOHN DICUOLLO John earned his BA in communications from the School of Media at Temple University and specialized in film production, but only after a purple-haired stint racking up ski credits in Colorado and time in art school in the south of France. Upon graduating, John worked on several independent films and was contracted by the Banff Festival of Mountain Films to serve as promoter for its North American tour in Philadelphia. After moving back to Colorado, John served as Petzl America’s athlete/event manager and Climbing Magazine’s advertising director before joining Backbone Media in 2007. ALYSSA FIRMIN
Michael Kennedy has spent most of his 62 years drawing inspiration from his time in the mountains and is still an active rock climber, backcountry skier, and cyclist. An accomplished photographer and writer, Michael worked as the editor and publisher of Climbing Magazine from 1974 to 1998. He served on the Board of Directors of the Access Fund, a climbers’ advocacy group based in Boulder, Colorado, and the Colorado Rocky Mountain School, a respected private high school in Carbondale, Colorado, and continues to volunteer with various national and local organizations. Michael lives in Carbondale, Colorado, with his wife and festival founder, Julie; they are visited occasionally by their 24-year-old son, Hayden, who is also an accomplished climber.
Alyssa spent her post-college years wandering the west in her Westfalia. After two seasons guiding sea kayaking trips in Baja she took a job at Patagonia. She lived in her van in the parking lot for the first four months, thinking that she’d be moving on again, but 17 years later she still punches the time clock in Ventura. For the past decade she has been writing and producing videos for the company. She has managed the video team the past two years. And though her VW still pulls in to work every day–she sold it to a friend–Alyssa now boasts a physical address.
NIKO JÄGER Long term Creative Director of the European Outdoor Film Tour and accomplished filmmaker of the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg, Germany, Niko Jaeger focuses on the fascinating theme of outdoor sports and adventure. The unique characters he encounters and what motivates their actions is especially important in his film making in order to capture authentic portrayals from the world of the great outdoors. His work as director of adventure documentaries has won him awards in major mountain film festivals worldwide.
