o u r 5 points The 5Point Film Festival is built on five guiding principles: respect, commitment, humility, purpose and balance. We believe these same principles also form the foundation for individuals who lead lives of adventure and connect all of us who share an elemental passion to explore and expand our boundaries.

R E S P E C T

For each other, for the environment, for the experience and for the knowledge we inherit from those who inspire and teach us.

letter from the 5point crew This festival is all about our community. We are thrilled you are here to join us for four days of inspiring adventure films. Welcome. If you‘ve traveled from afar, we are excited to show you our amazing Roaring Fork Valley. Be sure to get out during the day and enjoy some great hiking, fishing, biking, climbing… the choices are endless. 5Point Film is growing and we welcomed some new members to the crew this year. Sarah Wood came on board as our new Executive Director and Crosby Nordblom as the Dream Project Coordinator and Festival Manager. Jake Marty continues as Program Director, and Julie Kennedy, our founder, remains the driving force behind all we do. As we explore the potential for how 5Point Film can impact and inspire people, we are working on future events and building an engaging online presence for you—our audience, our family and our community—all year round.

C O M M I T M E N T

5Point Film brings you together with our filmmakers, special guests and volunteers in a unique experience over these four days. We hope you are moved by the stories told through the films you see this weekend and by the people you meet. The films that we have curated and the special guests we have gathered embody our five guiding principles, our 5Points: Balance. Commitment. Humility. Purpose. Respect.

HU M I L I T Y

Putting together the sixth year of 5Point we have worked to push our boundaries, stretch the definition of adventure in the stories being told, and bring you another evolution of the 5Point Film Festival experience. We have an ever-growing cadre of filmmakers and guests we are bringing together for this event and are thrilled to welcome new and old back to Carbondale.

To overcome fear and give ourselves completely to the challenge at hand while leading a vital existence and never allowing ourselves to become complacent.

To assume the courage and the discipline to listen to our intuition and not our egos, always mindful of our place in the natural order.

P UR P O S E

To muster the motivation and conviction necessary to pursue our highest aspirations in the face of adversity.

B A L A N C E

To maintain our focus and energy in life, in nature and on the journeys we undertake while things we cannot control shift around us.

our MISSION The 5Point Film Festival inspires adventure of all kinds, connects generations through shared experience and respect, engages passion with a conscience and educates through film. On the edge between desire and fear, between the known and unknown, is a place deep inside us all where the spirit is transformed—pushed beyond its limit by our deliberate commitment to usher in something new and original. In this soulful place we are catalyzed to learn, expand and engender newfound understanding to inspire others on their journeys. It is this spirit, this thirst for adventure, that the 5Point Film festival celebrates and shares with the community and filmmakers that gather for its annual Festival in Carbondale.

We reflect on putting this event together with a heightened sense of community and place, and are feeling an itch to get out and “Participate.” This is what we wish for you as you walk away from 5Point after hearing stories of adversity, triumph, new perspectives, and wonder. As always we can’t pull this kind of fun off without a lot of help. Help from you, help from our filmmakers and guests, help from our amazing volunteers, and help from our very generous partners. We have an amazing family of partners and we are so very fortunate to have them on board. Please help us thank all of them this weekend as you meet and greet around town. From comebacks to underdogs, skiers, kayakers, artists, bikers, photographers, and climbers, this year we are bringing you inspiration on all levels. Sit back, grab a pint, soak in the 5 points, and enjoy a 5Point Film Festival sure to leave you inspired to find your next adventure…whatever adventure means to YOU. Let’s hit it. Cheers, 5Point Film Crew Julie Kennedy Sarah Wood Jake Marty Crosby Nordblom

We are all ambassadors of the environment. The 5Point Film Festival inspires us to explore wild places and to return with a renewed vigor to protect our natural world. Proceeds from the 5Point Film Festival, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, benefit 1% for the Planet, the 5Point Dream Project and other non-profits throughout the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond.

2 0 1 3 S CH O L A R S H I P W I N N E R S William Sardinsky William, a senior at CRMS, brought two of his passions together in his application: photography and his love for the Carbondale community. Seeing the current debate regarding the Thompson Divide, he decided to capture compelling images of the local wilderness to fight against the development of this beautiful land. Working with numerous local photographers and organizations, William aims to create a photo collection that showcases the uses, importance, and raw beauty of Thompson Divide. He will then display this work throughout the Roaring Fork Valley to raise awareness. Griffen Rowe-Gaddis Griffen, a senior at Glenwood Springs High School, came to us with a deep desire to help those in need and an almost abnormal love for Portuguese. As a result, he will be heading to Brazil this summer to assist with the education and development of underprivileged children. He will join a small, local program in Sao Paulo that works with children from favelas who have been victims of drug violence. Offering an escape from crime and an opportunity to focus on their education and important life-skills, Griffen hopes to have a powerful, and tangible impact on their lives. With a good heart and a drive to help, we know he will have an incredible experience! Diana Banks Diana, a senior at Glenwood Springs High School, came to us with a very unique and meaningful project. Having already accomplished much through her schoolwork, she decided to explore what it means to live a “well-lived” life through proper purpose and balance. Traveling with a group to Laos, she will spend her time immersed in a reflective, perspective-altering culture, while participating in an array of community service projects. Living with monks, practicing and studying their pursuit of wellbeing, and working with impoverished children, Diana hopes to not only have a positive impact on the places and people she encounters, but to also learn much about herself through these experiences.

Anne-Marie Lewis Anne-Marie, a freshman at CRMS, is embarking on a project where she combines her love for helping others with her passion for photography and writing. Joining the Shoulder-To-Shoulder program, she will work alongside local communities within the Bolivian Amazon helping them access clean water. In addition, Anne-Marie will be documenting her work and interactions, and she has plans to speak at several venues throughout the US to spread awareness of deforestation and water quality issues in the Amazon. Will Masters Will, a junior at Roaring Fork High School, clearly seeks out ways to not only challenge himself, but also make the world around him a better place. Having developed a real drive and passion to innovate and construct, he created a project to attend a renewable engineering camp at Alfred University this summer. Learning various aspects of renewable energy, particle physics, economics of energy, and social and environmental factors, Will hopes to further his efforts to continue his education and provide better, greener living for everyone.

T h e 2 0 1 2 D r eam P r o j e c t Re c ipients …W h e r e a r e t h e y no w ? ? Lucien Blakemore Lucien went to South America to pursue his passion for telemark skiing and community service. Working with a group of philanthropic skiers, he traveled to the small community of Amaru to build a recycling center. Graduating from CRMS this year, Lucien will embark with a “new drive to improve other’s lives and lead a more passionate life of my own.”

Maggie Deveny Maggie volunteered at a clinic in Kenya, working to increase transparency for its education program. Blown away by the “absence of self-serving ways throughout their village…this was a very powerful trip that gave me an insight into who I have become and what I want to do.” Maggie graduated from CRMS last year and is currently studying at Denver University.

Claire Woolcott Wanting to become more than just a citizen of Glenwood Springs, Claire volunteered her time at a Quebec community for mentally challenged individuals. Persevering through challenging moments, she came out of her project with some incredible life lessons and insights. Claire says it best: “My hope is to follow my passions to different parts of the world, gaining knowledge, understanding, and maturity, while finding some small ways to care and give to others.”

Anabolena Mendoza Upon returning to Ecuador, where she was born, Anabolena learned about the Por Amor Orphanage and was immediately committed to helping those children by starting a new club in New Castle and raising funds for them. For her project, Anabolena returned in early 2013 to work with the kids, install solar panels and start a sustainable garden.

Casey Hynes Casey volunteered in an orphanage in Haiti last summer. Not only focusing on creating a positive and healthy environment for the children, she also strived to understand the perspectives of the Haitians and the context of the work. Upon finishing, Casey found that leaving Haiti and the children “didn’t even seem possible.” Casey graduated from Glenwood Springs High School last year and plans on returning to Haiti after college.

Featured Photographer At 17, Tim came bombing into Carbondale, fresh off the plane from his home in southern New Hampshire and straight to Rifle Canyon State Park for a month. It wasn’t glamorous by any means, but it defined the essence of what it means to live solely with passion and purpose. A couple years after his trip to Rifle, he landed his first cover image in Climbing Magazine and later went on to become their first Senior Contributing Photographer. Since then he has worked with other magazines such as Men’s Journal, Outside, and Popular Photography. He has won 6 PDN ‘Best of’ Awards for photography, and his commercial clients include The State of Colorado, The North Face, Eastern Mountain Sports, and Phase One. A lot has changed over the years, but he still loves sleeping in the dirt and getting his butt kicked on steep limestone.

Showcased Photographer Chris Burkard’s photography has the capacity to catapult the viewer into whatever moment he has captured. He is well known for having his own unique and visionary style and composition that leaves many to immediately recognize a “Burkard photograph.” Rather than simply photographing an event or sport, Chris strives to showcase the lifestyle that surrounds the sport and to capture the moments in between. Chris has served as a freelance photogpraher for numerous pubications including Surfline.com and Water magazine, and continues to travel the world seeking to experience the most remote, rugged and untouched destinations that exist.

Local Showcased Photographer Draper White credits his passion for the outdoors for giving him the fuel to do his work as a photographer. After graduating from the Hallmark Institute of Photography in 2004, Draper pursued his dream by moving to Colorado to assist award-winning photographer and director Tyler Stableford. In recent years, with the introduction of the DSLR camera, which shoots both stills and video, Draper found the opportunity to work as a cinematographer and still photographer. Although Draper’s work takes him around the world, he calls Carbondale, Colorado home.

After 30 years of this, along with false starts, an avalanche, and the increasing challenges of owning a ski area, it’s time for Anton to decide whether to see his father’s dream through or end it altogether. James Aikman

Chris Malloy A coast in peril requires an ambassador who knows its environment intimately, which makes filmmaker/Patagonia surf ambassador Chris Malloy the perfect agent to fight for the threatened coast of British Columbia. In a seamless effort, the Rainforest Conservation Foundation and Chris argue against the Enbridge Northern Gateway project, which would pipe tar sands oil from Alberta to the B.C. coast and wreak havoc on the area. In this film, Chris embarks on a surf trip along the now-unspoiled coast, highlighting all that’s at stake and all that’s worth fighting for.

Justin Jones An impromptu race begins when explorers Justin Jones and James Castrission set out to make the world’s first attempt at an unassisted round-trip expedition from the Antarctic to the South Pole. As fate would have it, someone far more experienced has just begun the same journey, aiming for the same record—and he’s got a head start. What ensues is more than just the race, but a battle against failure, whiteouts, frostbite and hypothermia that showcases the limits of the human spirit and what some people will do to challenge those very bounds.

The isolated and entirely uninhabited bay of a remote Arctic island near the coast of Northern Norway offers little respite from the cold Norwegian winter. Nonetheless, surfers Inge Wegge and Jørn Ranum spent nine months living on this island in a cabin built of driftwood, eating expired food that would have otherwise been tossed out. Why live like this, you ask? Because this very remote bay has one thing that, for Inge and Jørn, far outweighs its otherwise meager offerings: some of the world’s finest waves.

Chris works with some of the top climbers in the world and focuses on a wide range of subjects from first ascent alpine climbs in the Himalayas to conservationist groups in the United States. Whether he’s crafting a threeminute web short or a film festival full feature, Chris loves making films.

Skip Armstrong Skip Armstrong’s eyes will melt your soul, his editing will jumpstart your heart, and his voice would draw wayward ships to crash along the rocky shores of Baja California. Did we mention he can dance? ASPEN HIGH SCHOOL KIDS Three Aspen, Coloradobased high school students—Ross Pingatore, Wyatt Young, and Arthur Kelso—are pursuing their passion for film by squeezing in as much time as possible to shoot and edit in between the demands of school, homework and the like. Focusing on topics that vary from hockey to depression in teenagers, this trio is already creating some great films.

Aaron Baker Professional motocross racer Aaron Baker broke three cervical vertebrae in his neck in a crash in 1999. Aaron remembers becoming instantly aware of the new path his life would take. He would no longer be able to race professionally, skate, surf, snowboard, mountain bike, or fish as he always had. But instead of letting this bring him down, he recognized that he was destined for far greater things; namely, he saw a newfound ability to bring hope and inspiration to people of all kinds through his own experience with adversity.

Jeremy Collins Jeremy Collins is an artist with a vertical perspective. He has been at the forefront of climbinginspired art for the last twelve years, and his work has been seen in every issue of Rock & Ice and Alpinist magazines.

Among his ski mountaineering achievements, Chris became the first person to ski all of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks in less than one year. When not traveling the globe, Chris resides in Aspen with his wife and three boys.

Kyle Dempster Kyle Dempster began climbing at the age of 12, and has gone through what he labels an “organic revolution” in his climbing. He’s dabbled in all of the various disciplines but is most efficient in the alpine climbing arena. Despite this fact, he still “loves to flail miserably on boulder problems.” Kyle makes his way through life with the belief that being dedicated to a passion— while both accepting and actively pursuing the unknown—are the key ingredients for human expansion and growth.

Anson Fogel Anson Fogel’s childhood, spent in the rural mountain west devouring books, music, and movies, led to a lifelong passion for film. Today, he is known as a director with over 20 major film festival awards, including the Grand Prize and three separate awards from Banff 2011, Grand Prize at New Zealand, The Fowler Award at Telluride, The Camera prizes at Tento and Gratz and many more. Anson’s style is known for being emotive and ephemeral while firmly rooted in the natural world.

Alex Honnold Alex Honnold started climbing a r o u n d a g e 11 a n d , a f t er climbing primarily indoors until the age of 18, he dropped out of college to pursue climbing outdoors full time. Though he likes climbing of any kind, Alex explains that he really likes the big, tall routes, and that “the more committing it is the better the overall experience.”

Hayden Kennedy Hayden Kennedy was introduced to his first multi-pitch climb (the Kor-Ingalls route on Castleton Tower) at the age of 13. The experience as he remembers it was petrifying the entire time, but rather than deter him, it merely solidified his obsession with climbing. To this day, Hayden still revels in the most challenging climbs; he draws inspiration from the struggle of a hard redpoint or the mental effort a dicey alpine lead requires. Hayden aspires every day to master all aspects of climbing.

Brendan Leonard Brendan Leonard is a climber and freelance writer whose w o r k a p p ea r s i n Climbing , Backpacker, Adventure Journal, Mountain Gazette, the Dirtbag Diaries and other publications. His love for filmmaking spurred his desire to share stories and adventure with others—and continues to motivate his work to this day. Keep an eye for him at the festival—look for the big yellow school bus.

Nick Waggoner Nick Waggoner is the Director/ Producer of Sweetgrass Productions, and he tells stories through a poetic rhythm and soulful narrative. Nick has a BA in Documentary Film from Colorado College, as well as a childhood worthy of a story itself. Born in a back-alley dumpster in New York City, Nick first and foremost learned that shyness and modesty were not rewarded in the big city—and quickly learned how to talk himself out of an arrest and into an opportunity.

James Walsh James Walsh began his professional career by cutting his teeth as a management consultant. Then he moved on to set up a renewable energy company, but grew frustrated with his lack of involvement in the outdoors. In May 2010, James took off on his own and set up Sinamatella Productions, an independent film production and distribution company based in Cape Town, South Africa. Through film, the company aims to celebrate the outdoors and inspire people to get back outside, whether in their own backyard or on a different continent.
