INTRODUCTION

Some people say tsunamis are tidal waves. Tsunami comes from two Japanese words, (TSU) means harbor and (NAMI) means wave. So tsunami means harbor wave.

HOW IS TSUNAMI FORMED Waves are formed differently than tsunamis because, when the wind blows the water it only affects the upper layer. But tsunamis are formed deep under water, so if it affects the bottom layer, all of the layer is effected. Tsunami is mostly affected by earthquakes or under water earthquakes, but some times landslides and volcanic eruptions can also cause deadly tsunamis. The under water earth quake in the subduction zones are most common. When an oceanic plate hits a continental plate, eventually the heavy oceanic plate, pushes and goes under the continental plate. The earthquake lifts the part of the ocean floor up and parts down, what happens with the ocean floor is mirrored with the water surface. But gravity evens out the water surface. Even though you think the water surface is flat, but actually under the water, they are really fast waves. Tsunami extends 16 thousand km long! When the tsunami arrivers to the shore they don’t have enough space to go, so they slow down and pack together. The water swells and forms a wall of water with a whole lot of energy inside. The water force can break houses. The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, at the Indian Ocean, the earth quake magnitude was 9.0. Tsunamis
