lakes, float down the Manitowish River, or explore the Turtle Flambeau Flowage, a pristine 13,000 acre lake. Along the way, hop out for a rest, a swim, or a snack.

SummerSummer in the Northwoods is like nothing else on Earth. Manitowish Waters’ 10-lake chain offers fun for the whole family and a way to reconnect with nature, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Most people who visit the Northwoods have been doing so since they were a child. Fortunately, our area still has that nostalgic “up north” vibe today, except we now have some modern conveniences. One of the best new additions to the town is our beautiful, pristine paved bike trails.

No bike, no problem! Rent an e-bike at River’s Edge downtown kiosk, their main location right on the bike path, or Coontail in Boulder Junction.

Hop in a kayak or canoe and paddle the 40+ miles of waterways starting on the Manitowish Waters chain of

Enjoy weekly events such as the free Manitowish Waters Skiing Skeeters waterski show on Wednesday and Saturday nights. The Skiing Skeeters have been delighting guests since 1954 and continue to wow guests with their lively shows.

The Manitowish Waters Lions Club hosts bingo every Monday at the Community Center, where all are welcome. Doors open and concessions begin at 6pm with games starting at 7pm.

If you love live music, then you simply must walk, bike, boat, or drive to Music in the Park, held every Sunday from 4-6pm in Koller Park. In addition, numerous local restaurants and taverns bring in talented bands and musicians from surrounding communities, and you can find live music 4-5 nights a week throughout the summer.

FallFall is dominated by the most beautiful harvest in the world - cranberries! Deeply embedded in the history of Manitowish Waters, the cranberry harvest is one of the primary economic drivers of the area. Additionally, wildlife - and nature or wildlife photographers - flock to the cranberry marshes, which are especially magical in the morning.

Visit a working cranberry marsh to learn about the history, cultivation, and present impact of cranberries. Free weekly tours occur every Friday at 10am, from mid-August through early October at Cranberry Square Market on Alder Lake Road.

September and October are perfect for hiking, biking, paddling, and taking leisurely drives around the area. Fall colors are simply spectacular in Manitowish Waters, and everywhere you look there’s a vista prettier than the last one.

Watch out for wildlife! As the leaves begin to fall, the forest opens up to reveal vast areas previously hidden by foliage. Keep an eye out for white tailed deer, turkeys, red foxes, coyotes, muskrats, otters, beavers, bald eagles, sandhill cranes, loons, trumpeter swans, ducks, and more. If you’re lucky, you might even spy a black bear, a gray wolf, or an all-white albino deer.

Many people love to fish from opening day in early May throughout the summer, but muskie fishing is especially popular in the fall. Schedule a day with one of our experienced fishing guides and experience our lakes in a whole new way.

Families and friends have hunted in the Northwoods since the beginning of time, and the fall would not be complete without duck blinds, camouflage, and lots of blaze orange. With 43% of Vilas County designated as public lands, you have access to more than 240,000 acres of woods and wetlands to enjoy.

WinterWinter is a bit of a hidden gem because Manitowish Waters has a reputation for being cold and snowy. With the right gear, however, winter just might become your favorite season in the Northwoods.

The Sno-Skeeters Snowmobile Club grooms and maintains more than 25 miles of pristine snowmobile trails, which are part of a larger network of more than 1,600 miles of trails in the Northwoods.

To move at a slightly slower pace, you can cross-country ski, snowshoe, or fat tire bike every day for weeks and not cross the same path twice. Head to the North Lakeland Discovery Center, Mecca Trails, WinMan Trails, Powell Marsh Wildlife Area, North Lakeland School trails, Van Vliet Hemlocks, and a brand new interpretative trail at Camp Mercer CCC Camp, for miles and miles of fun.

For ice skating and hockey enthusiasts, the hockey rink at North Lakeland School is the perfect place to spend a few hours. Don’t have skates? No problem, simply borrow a pair from inside the warming hut, and warm up with a hot chocolate and a snack while you’re there.

Within about an hour’s drive, visitors to Manitowish Waters can access some of the best downhill skiing in the Midwest! You’ll be whooshing down your new favorite hill in no time.

Spring

As the snow melts and spring rains pass through, swollen rivers feed some of the most impressive waterfalls in the Midwest.

As lake ice begins to melt and rivers quicken their flow, paddling the Manitowish River is especially nice in the spring. Bugs and people are few and far between, making it an incredibly peaceful time of year to explore the waterways.

Spring is also a great time to enjoy our indoor spaces – do some shopping, grab a coffee or a meal at one of our wonderful restaurants, treat yourself at the salon or spa, and relax with a puzzle or game from Koller Memorial Library (available to anyone, no library card required).

New last year, Manitowish Waters now has an indoor youth recreation center with basketball, hockey, table games, and more. This new facility is located next to Koller Library in the old fire house.

History of Manitowish Waters

Manitowish Waters has a rich history from our early Indigenous People, the logging drives, the railroads, fishing, the cranberry bogs, the infamous John Dillinger and much more.

The first inhabitants arrived about 10,000 years ago, with numerous indigenous cultures calling this chain of lakes home. The Lake Superior Ojibwa won the region from the Dakota Sioux in battle around 1745 and sought comfort on the eastern shores of Manitowish and Rest lakes.

Next to settle in the area were loggers who used the chain of lakes to float logs to sawmills. By 1887, a dam was built to hold lake waters in place to assist in logging and river driving. Remnants of the logging era are discoverable today below Rest Lake Dam and at the bottom of our lakes.

Beginning early in the 20th century, vacationers began to discover what is today Manitowish Waters, drawn to the area by the serenity, abundant fish and game, and access to pristine lakes and streams. Lodges began popping up, and some of the original buildings are still standing today.

Manitowish Waters has always been a home to travelers yearning to escape the roaring city life. This year, we invite you to slow down and take in all the beauty life has to offer. Share moments, share your path, and come make your own history that will last a lifetime.

Explore on land

Trails, trails, and more trails. Within the boundaries of Manitowish Waters, there are countless miles of trails for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

The 52-mile Heart of Vilas Bike Trail goes right through downtown Manitowish Waters and connects a total of 5 towns: Mercer, Manitowish Waters, Boulder Junction, Sayner/Star Lake, and St. Germain.

These dedicated bike paths have become well-known in the biking community and attract visitors from all over the country. Riders flow in and out of the towering pine trees, skirting lakes and going over beautiful rivers. Recently designated as a National Recreation Trail, the Heart of Vilas Bike Trail continues to grow since the first mile was paved back in 1998.

Right off the paved bike trail on County W, the North Lakeland Discovery Center (NLDC) offers 12 miles of maintained trails for hiking, birding, snowshoeing, and off-road biking. Make plans to attend a naturalist-led program, or learn about the fascinating history of Manitowish Waters with a joint NLDC and Manitowish Waters Historical Society program.

Continue heading west on Hwy W and you’ll eventually reach WinMan Trails. With over 20 miles of mountain bike trails, hiking, snowshoe, and cross-country ski trails, you can spend days out at WinMan and always see something new. Well-behaved dogs are always welcome to enjoy the fresh air as well.

Last year, a new interpretive trail opened to visitors. Signs along the trail tell the story of the history of Camp Mercer, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp. The camp was built beginning in 1933, and today hikers or snowshoers can meander the 3.5-mile mowed trail, view ruins and remnants of old buildings, and discover something new about this fascinating time in the history of Manitowish Waters.

Winter Trail Experience

Winter brings a whole new experience to the trails. The Sno-Skeeters Snowmobile Club grooms and maintains more than 25 miles of pristine snowmobile trails, which are part of a larger network of more than 1,600 miles of trails in the Northwoods. The club promotes safety and trail enjoyment, and for all these reasons, Manitowish Waters is truly a snowmobiler’s paradise!

North Lakeland School offers 6 miles of flat, groomed ski and snowshoe trails. Park near the warming hut just off of Papoose Lake Road, and help yourself to a cup of coffee or hot chocolate.

Explore on water

One of the most important features of Manitowish Waters is, well, the water! Crystal clear lakes and pristine rivers form the foundation of the town’s identity. Bring your boat, or rent one when you get here and explore a different lake each day. Whatever vessel you choose, be sure to allocate plenty of time to cruise the 10 lakes of the Manitowish Chain.

Each lake has its own personality. The bustling energy on Rest Lake welcomes boaters to watch a Skiing Skeeter show on Wednesday and Saturday nights, or toodle over to Koller Park and listen to a Sunday afternoon concert at Music in the Park.

Manitowish Waters is home to a number of fine restaurantsfrom a coffee shop with a scenic view, to the lakeside patio atmosphere, to the classic Northwoods supper club. In the summer, enjoy a slow boat cruise to dinner on a lakeside patio. In the winter months, take a snowmobile ride over nicely groomed trails and frozen lakes to warm up with a bowl of chowder and a hot drink. And don’t leave town before enjoying the area’s classic Friday Fish Fry.

Before you go anywhere on the Chain, be sure to pick up a waterproof Water Safety Map at Waters Marine, Townline Sports, Dietz’s gas station, or the Chamber of Commerce.

22 ManitowishWaters.org

If you’re interested in exploring an area that’s a little less traveled, check out the Manitowish River, a wild and beautiful stretch that invites paddlers and floaters to relax and enjoy the view. Put in your kayaks, canoes, or tubes and go out for a few hours. Or, go for a few days and include a camping component in your adventure.

Several local outfitters have gear rentals and advice on where to put in, how far to go, and how to best shuttle your vehicle and/or stuff.

Connect with the outdoors

In the mood to connect with nature and wildlife? You’re in the right place. A primary reason visitors return to Manitowish Waters year after year, is that there is space to roam and plenty of room to stretch your legs.

Fishing

There are few activities more serene, and yet more exciting, than fishing our incredible waterways. It’s an all-season sport, drawing thousands of anglers to our pristine waters, chasing monster muskie, scoping out where the walleye are hitting, and hunkering down over an 8-inch hole drilled in the lake ice. You might even spot a slow-moving fisherperson, stealthily making their way along the water’s edge, hoping to not spook that record trout.

Scores of lakes, rivers, and streams await you—4,265 acres of water to be exact, including our “Legendary 10-Lake Chain.” Most lakes have either state- or town-owned public fishing piers and landings for easy access. Remember to purchase a fishing license before you hit the water and brush up on the rules and regulations for water safety.

If you’re fishing our waters for the first time, or if you’ve fished for some time and gotten skunked, chances are you might need a little help from an expert. Contact one of our experienced guides and let them do the heavy lifting for you.

Birding

One of the greatest things about Manitowish Waters is that you don’t have to go anywhere to spot a variety of birds — just sit quietly on your patio and listen carefully. Chances are you’ll be rewarded with the enjoyable sights and sounds of the Northwoods, right at home.

To increase your odds of spotting some iconic species such as eagles, ducks, cranes, and warblers, start at the North Lakeland Discovery Center. Twelve miles of wooded trails and a lake provide excellent birding habitat and views. Interpretive signs, a nature center, and naturalists on staff can help you learn about what you’re hearing and seeing.

South of town, Powell Marsh State Wildlife Area is an exceptional bird viewing area, and is unique in its wide open, wetland habitat. It’s a stark contrast to the towering pine trees of much of the rest of the area. North of town, the Van Vliet Hemlocks State Natural Area offers a beautiful and serene walk for birders and non-birders alike. Little Turtle Waterfowl Management Area is another good option for viewing.

All of these trails are easily hikeable during the summer, and are accessible during winter months with snowshoes or cross country skis.

Road Trips

While very few things are available 365 days a year, one exception is taking a road trip. Pack some snacks and plan to make a couple of stops along the way for photos, food, or beverages at a local watering hole. Driving the winding country roads is fun and beautiful any time of year, but is especially breathtaking during the fall. For peak color tours, plan a visit in late September or early October — you will not be disappointed!

Sample driving tour - 44 miles

From downtown Manitowish Waters, head north on County W through Winchester and into Presque Isle. When County W meets County B, turn right on B and travel to County M. Turn right (south) on M and travel into Boulder Junction to County K. Continue left on M if you wish to explore the community of Boulder Junction, or turn right on County K to return to Manitowish Waters. County K ends at County W. Turn left on W to return to downtown Manitowish Waters and US Hwy. 51.

Somewhere between relaxation and adventure is a must-do in the Northwoods — visiting some of the Midwest’s most beautiful waterfalls. Below are a few popular falls to get you started, but there are dozens more to explore within an hour or two of Manitowish Waters.

Biggest bang for your buck

The five waterfalls along the Black River near Bessemer, Michigan, are tough to beat. Ample parking and short trails (less than a mile) welcome visitors of all ages and abilities. While most access paths have quite a few stairs, Potawatomi Falls is stroller and wheelchair accessible. To get there, follow signs from Route 2 in Bessemer to the Black River Scenic Byway. The waterfalls and parking areas are well marked.

Biggest and wildest

Potato Falls in Gurney, Wisconsin, is huge and roaring, dropping a total of 90 feet into the Potato River. Visitors can explore the rapids from multiple viewpoints, and during times of lower flows, might even explore in the gorge itself. Gurney is on Hwy 169, about 12 miles northeast of Copper Falls State Park and about 3 miles south of US 2.

Fall color tour

Route #1 - Powell Marsh Loop:

Hwy. 51 south 2/10-mile to Powell Road and turn right. Powell Road extends 7 miles, ending at Hwy. 47. You will pass Alder Lake Road about 1.5 miles down on left (this road leads you to the cranberry marshes), and about 3 miles down encounter the scenic Powell Marsh Wildlife Area with its flocks of waterfowl, birds & other wildlife, cattails, marsh grasses and forest that turn colors of gold, red and yellow. About 6.5 miles down, you’ll notice the trailhead for the Powell trail system – deep woods trails for hiking and skiing in winter. At Hwy. 47, turn left and travel through the Native American Reservation of Lac du Flambeau. Continue through Lac du Flambeau on Hwy. 47 to County H. Turn left on H and follow to Hwy. 51. Turn left on Hwy. 51 and travel north back to Manitowish Waters.

Route #2 - Cranberry Loop:

Travel south on Hwy. 51 approximately 3.5 miles and turn right on South Townline Road. About 2 miles down, the road sharply curves right and becomes Alder Lake Road. Follow Alder Lake Road - the first marsh you’ll come to is Vilas Cranberry Co. and the Cranberry Square Gift Shop. (Stop in and say hello to Maria Winter! Daily through harvest, 104ish.) The remaining four local marshes (Bartling’s Manitowish Cranberry on Alder Lake Rd., and on Cranberry Blvd. off Alder Lake Road: Indermuehle’s Alder Lake Cranberry, Folsom Farm and Rayala Cranberry) do not accommodate drive-throughs. However, you can see some of the bogs as you drive along Alder Lake Rd.

At the end of Alder Lake Rd., turn right onto Powell Road to get back to Hwy. 51 or left to travel to Hwy. 47. As harvest goes into full swing (generally late-Sept. thru mid-Oct.), the bogs are flooded and become a sea of crimson red. This is truly a unique experience for all fall travelers. One cranberry marsh tour is conducted each Friday at 10 a.m., starting from the Manitowish Waters Community Center courtesy of the Manitowish Waters Chamber and Cranberry Growers Association (August 25 - October 6, 2023). Contact the Chamber or refer to ManitowishWaters.org for details. During our Cran-A-Rama celebration on October 7, free shuttle bus cranberry marsh tours are offered.

Route #3 - The Roads Less Traveled Loop:

Hwy. 51 North 1 mile to County W. Right on W through downtown Manitowish Waters. Continue down W through Winchester and into Presque Isle to County B (approximately 16 miles). Turn right on B and travel to County M. Continue on B past M if you wish to explore Land O’Lakes. Or, turn right on M and travel into Boulder Junction to County K. Continue left on M if you wish to explore the community of Boulder Junction, or turn right on CTH K to return to Manitowish Waters. County K ends at County W. Turn left on W to return to downtown Manitowish Waters and US Hwy. 51.

Route #4 - Peek at Fall Loop:

Hwy. 51 north 1 mile to County W. Right on W through downtown Manitowish Waters, through Winchester and Presque Isle to County P. Turn right on P and enjoy a winding 7-mile drive to County K. Turn right on K (North Lakeland School will be on your right) and follow back to County W. Left on W takes you back to downtown Manitowish Waters and Hwy. 51.

Route #5 - Western Loop:

Highway 51 North 1 mile to County W. Turn right on W and travel through downtown Manitowish Waters into Winchester to County O. Turn left on O and travel to County G. Turn left on G and travel to County H (which takes you to Mercer) and then to County J.

Turn left on J and travel about 5 miles to County W. Turn right on W to head back to downtown Manitowish Waters and Highway 51, OR

Turn right on J and travel to Highway 51; take a left onto Highway 51 and travel for about 10 miles back to Manitowish Waters.

Cranberry harvest

One of only three fruits native to North America, the cranberry is one amazing berry and an economic boon to the area. They were originally named “crane berries,” as their blossoms closely resemble the head of a Sandhill Crane.

Contrary to popular belief, cranberries grow on low, dry, woody plants. Water is used during harvest time to help float the hollow berries, making harvest much easier. The water used for harvest comes from nearby lakes, and is returned to the lake cleaner than when it started due to the natural filtering capabilities of the marshes.

What started with five families digging marshes and building roads in the mid-1940s has expanded into six farms totaling 650 acres of cranberries. This small but mighty industry in Manitowish Waters produces about 15,000,000 pounds annually, employs 30 full-time employees, and brings in an additional 50 employees for the harvest.

Fun Facts

Harvest lasts about 5-6 weeks from early September through mid-October. 95% of cranberries are used for juice or sweet and dried cranberries, leaving roughly 5% harvested for fresh fruit.

Wisconsin growers account for 60% of the world’s cranberry harvest and contribute $3 billion annually to the state’s economy.

Eat & Drink

Your travels have taken you this far, and exploring our pristine woods and water has filled your day. Now it’s time to gather around for dinner at a local restaurant to connect with friends and family. The possibilities are many!

Veteran visitors to Manitowish Waters know this community is home to not only the Manitowish Waters’ Legendary Chain of 10 Lakes, but also home to a number of fine restaurants from a quiet coffee shop with a scenic view, to the lakeside patio atmosphere, to the classic Northwoods supper club. Sit back and enjoy as the local cuisine will reward you with a delightful evening that will have them sighing with satisfaction.

Enjoy our wide array of dining experiences, like one of our traditional Wisconsin supper clubs featuring an appetizer tray, slow roasted prime rib and old-fashioned cocktail. Come as you are for a casual, relaxed lunch at one of our family friendly restaurants for a tasty burger and fries or delicious pizza at Rustic Roadhaus. Celebrate a milestone over a five-course meal beginning with a champagne toast and ending with bananas foster prepared tableside. And don’t leave Manitowish Waters without enjoying the classic Friday Night Fish Fry.

We have more than 10 lakes in our township, so it’s quite possible to travel by water to some of our restaurants and taverns. In the summer, enjoy a slow boat cruise to dinner on a lakeside patio. In the winter months, add a few more layers for a snowmobile ride over nicely groomed trails and frozen lakes to warm up with a bowl of chowder and a hot drink.

Bon appétit.
