THANK YOU TO OUR 605 MAGAZINE ISSUE SPONSOR:
As this is my first issue being a full-time part of the team, I’ve gotten the chance to experience even more of this month’s content than ever before. These are the highlights: The Greenhouse (page 36) was an incredible inspiration for my future kitchen dreams, Convolo (page 48) will be added to my wedding Pinterest board, and I can’t wait to get my hands on every pastry at Ruby’s Roost Bakery & Coffee (page 24) next time I’m in the Black Hills!

Dakota Resources written by Dawn Geertsema + photos by Alana Snyder “We are a nonprofit that works with rural leaders to help grow their capacity and help their community thrive,” said Dakota Resources president Joe Bartmann. Working with primarily economic development organizations and directors, Dakota Resources helps to foster growth in rural communities across the nation from South Dakota to Georgia and even Alaska.
14 |
“There’s a great opportunity for rural communities that’s been accelerated since COVID to really make themselves a place where people who can work remotely and choose to live anywhere can decide to live,” said Bartmann. To achieve this rural growth, they build leadership and the financial resources to empower the vibrant future that particular place strives for.

“The only ‘should’ we give communities is that they should get together as a community and decide what the future they want to create is,” said Bartmann. “It’s different in Wagner versus Faulkton versus Sturgis.” The Dakota Resources team uses their own office relations to get into the mindset of a rural community in order to better help them reach their goals “We operate in a distributed power structure because that’s how communities operate,” Bartmann explained. “We’re trying to learn how to help communities by operating that way ourselves and seeing what’s hard about it and what needs more clarity.” People live in different areas for different reasons. Because every community is different in their goals, interests, and developmental desires, the organization offers different outlets for each to reach their goals. “We have five different programs for people to raise their hands in different ways,” said Bartmann. The five programs are Community Development Loans, Community Coaching, Rural X, Learning Network, and New Markets Tax Credits.

Rural X Art During a past Rural X event, one of the keynote speakers worked with over 100 people within a community to create an eight-foot by fourfoot mural that was then brought around to banks that had sponsored the event. With the artist’s permission, the team cut three pieces from the art, and they are displayed in the Dakota Resources office.

Community Development Loans

The main role of Dakota Resources is to help finance economic development organizations in various rural communities. “Our work there is to help them make projects happen, but also to help them build their financial capacity so that organization can last generations,” said Bartmann.

Participants of the first Rural X Summit co-created this piece of woven artwork.
Community Coaching “With Community Coaching, we go out into their community and show them,” said Bartmann. This, too, looks different for each client. “It could be anywhere from a one-time community listening session to a strategic planning retreat with the board to a two-or three-year intensive process where we’re there working with different teams on different projects and anything in between,” explained Bartmann. Typically the small group they work with is either the chamber of commerce, a development corporation, or from the city’s employees.
“We don’t lend money to projects. We lend money to an organization and let the community decide what to do with that money. We’re helping them identify their strategies more instead of telling them what they should be.”
-Joe Bartmann

Rural X Rural X is an event that encourages anyone to join. “That is more about connecting individuals of any background who want to learn about community development, connect with other people, and steal their ideas for their communities,” said Bartmann. “It’s focused around a one-to-two-day event.” This is a conference-like experience with more people than the other programs.
Learning Network Dakota Resources has an online platform called Thriverr, in which community leaders can grow their own network as well as manage their own tasks. “They can do their own thing, but they can also connect with each other and share research, ideas, and questions,” said Bartmann. He adds that many of these leaders are the only people paid to think about the future for their communities. “We get together in person once a quarter, so they can build that confidence and those bonds with each other. So they can lean on and trust each other,” said Bartmann.

New Markets Tax Credits
Executive leadership coordinator Misty Cordell and director of community impact Ellie Naasz gather around a meeting table.
New Market Tax Credits is a federal program. Bartmann explained, “We apply every year for an allocation from the federal government that allows us to award tax credits to investors for projects that are in high poverty places—in areas where those projects might not happen and investors may not come in. We manage that whole project.”

Bakery & Coffee
written by Dawn Geertsema + photos by Alana & John Snyder
It all started with homeschooling and a hen. “We had the idea to start a family business after we’d been homeschooling for about four years,” said Linnéa Boyd. “I think it helps our daughters to learn how to be part of society and get to know people.” Linnéa and her husband, Bob, first opened Ruby’s Roost Bakery & Coffee west of Minneapolis seven years ago. The shop was lovingly named after one of their five backyard chickens.

“I love to bake, and we mutually love coffee. So the family business that our daughters can grow up in is a coffee shop and a bakery,” explained Linnéa. “Our kids are such a big part of it. They’re very dedicated and hard working for our business.” After relocating once further into the city, the family decided to take the leap and move somewhere more fit to their preferred activities of biking, hiking, and horseback riding. “We’ve been coming to the Black Hills for a family vacation every year ever since we were married there 21 years ago,” she said. “When we were thinking of where we would want to move our family and our business to, the Black Hills became the first choice.”

Linnéa says she didn’t want to be in a tourist trap town, but rather be part of a community. “I wanted it to be home,” said Linnéa. “We thought that Spearfish would be the perfect place for us and our daughters.” Together, the couple and their daughters, Adda (17) and Lucia (12), bring scratch-made pastries and specialty lattes to the Spearfish community. From the pastry case, there’s a wide variety of freshly made goods that are often rotating from French baguettes and pretzels to muffins, cookies, and brownies. “The Caramel Roll has always been our big draw,” said Linnéa. “I make it like Grandma used to make it with all organic ingredients. Everything is made from scratch, fresh every day.” Another variation of the roll comes with pecans scattered on top. Trailing behind the Caramel and Cinnamon Rolls, Linnéa says her Chocolate Babka Roll has a lot more popularity in South Dakota than it did in Minnesota. “It’s not quite as sweet as a caramel roll,” she said. “I make a dark chocolate ganache for the filling. In Minnesota people were kind of afraid of it. Here, everybody wants to try that chocolate roll.”

“My biggest compliment is when someone in maybe their 60s says, ‘This tastes like my mom used to make.’” –Linnéa Boyd When the doors open each morning, there’s a selection of four scones. Each day there is a fruit flavor, a gluten-free option, a savory choice, and the signature recipe. The Ruby Scone is a staple of the bakery, made with dark chocolate, white chocolate, coconut, and oatmeal and topped with a cinnamon glaze. “A customer way back said we should make a latte to go with the Ruby Scone, since that scone is so delicious. Sure enough, we started the Ruby Latte,” said Linnéa, explaining that the drink is quite sweet, as it has the same flavors as the scone. The Boyds’ favorite lattes include specialties like Cherry Almond, Lavender Vanilla, and Toffeenut Mocha. The signature loose leaf latte is the Spearfish Fog, a cardamom cinnamon tea with vanilla. For the love-oriented month of February, Linnéa says she hopes to bring back an old menu staple, the Raspberry Rose latte. “It’s a nice Valentine's Day drink,” she said. “It’s white chocolate with a little bit of raspberry and a little bit of rose.” Linnéa adds that she typically brings in more cookies and cupcakes for Valentine's Day. To pair with the Raspberry Rose latte, she plans to introduce a chocolate cupcake with raspberry frosting.

When the 605 team first delved into Misten Langenfeld’s journey running Airbnbs, she had two downtown Sioux Falls homes listed on the website. “My husband kind of thought I was crazy right out of the gates because there were under 50 Airbnbs in Sioux Falls when I started,” said Langenfeld. Sioux Falls has over 300 listings on Airbnb today, six of which Langenfeld owns.

“My realtor Emily Eisenhauer, who is a friend of mine, knows my style. I’ve been wanting to get into All Saints from the get go,” said Langenfeld about the neighborhood of one of her houses, The Greenhouse. “Emily knew the character of this house.”
The Uncommons Boutique Airbnbs
When her realtor insisted she see the house, she physically was unable to leave her work party for her business, Ripple Marketing. The next morning, there were five offers on the house, but they got it with their last-minute offer. “I fell in love with the wood floors, the woodwork, and the high ceilings,” she said.
*All of the houses have one bathroom, a full kitchen, free parking, internet, a washer and dryer, a patio, and a backyard. Each is also within minutes of downtown Sioux Falls.

Site unseen, Langenfeld purchased the home and added the vintage-inspired remodel to The Uncommons Boutique Airbnbs lineup of houses that are located just minutes from downtown. The Greenhouse is a two-bedroom, one-bathroom home with a large living space, a sizable backyard, and a couple places perfect for Langenfeld’s love of plants. “I go into each house and get a feel for them. I theme them all,” said Langenfeld. “This one has a sunroom and an arboretum, so I knew plants were the theme.”

Leaning into that theme, Langenfeld painted the walls of most of the house and the ceilings in the living and dining rooms a deep green. She paired the green with accents of black, white, pink, and gold. “They might not necessarily do this in their own house, but when they’re on vacation, I feel like they might want something different than just the crisp sheets of a hotel room,” said Langenfeld. Her favorite furniture in the home is the couch and chair in the living room. “I found a green couch with leaves on it from Urban Archeology and about died,” said Langenfeld with a laugh. Both are made of the same green fabric with spatterings of leaves. When she first began looking for pieces to include in the design, she stumbled across them in downtown Sioux Falls. “That is from the 1960s,” explained Langenfeld. “It came out of a woman’s house in Sioux City that had meticulously cared for it. I had to have it. It had the matching chair.” Throughout the house are other vintage items like a record player in the dining room, a large sign reading “Spirit of the West” in the kitchen, and even a rack of old postcards in the front sunroom.
Perfect Paint Langenfeld swears by Benjamin Moore and C2 paints. The main shade throughout the Greenhouse is a deep green called Salamander, which is part of the Color Preview collection.

“These two light fixtures came from a train station in Chicago at the turn of the century,” Langenfeld said about the matching pair of fixtures placed in the hallway and the sunroom. “I found them on Facebook Marketplace, and I drove to the middle of nowhere to get them.” She chose many items for this home from antique shops and flea markets but mixed within the vintage glamour are new pieces from Anthropologie, IKEA, Target, World Market, and more.
The kitchen has freshly painted cabinets with gold hardware, deeptoned butcher block counters, and a farmhouse sink. One of the proudest parts of the remodel for Langenfeld was the hand-painted kitchen backsplash tiles depicting leaves and flowers. “The tiles are one of my favorite things. I wanted them in my house for so long,” she said. “I still don’t have them in my own house.” These Airbnbs are labors of love for Langenfeld, who spends most of her time in the marketing world. “People get really pigeon holed into this is what you do,” she said. “People should realize that you can do more than you think.”

When looking for the perfect place to host an event, consider Convolo in downtown Sioux Falls. The 1,750-squarefoot event space can entertain 75 standing guests and 60 seated. Amy Boes was searching for a small-scale venue to celebrate her husband’s 30th birthday, but nothing was quite right. “We thought downtown could probably use something like this,” said Boes. “There’s not a lot of smaller spaces to choose from.” Angela Merritt, co-owner and Boes’s sister, added, “The East Bank area is really growing. We want to be on the forefront of that growth.” The sisters decided to open their own venue in this flatiron historic building for anyone looking to host events of any variety, such as showers, rehearsal dinners, reunions, business gatherings, weddings, and styled shoots with vendors.

FACT Convolo’s dried florals are from The Flower Mill.
The space is light and airy from the white ceilings to the lightstained floorboards, a blank canvas to create a perfect backdrop for any event. The structure was built in 1918 as a bank. Many business changes later, the sisters began transforming the building into a dream event space. “The ceilings were black, and it was dark and gritty. The floors were in rough shape. We spent October and November renovating,” explained Boes.
54 |
They redid the hardwood floors to a lighter stain, painted the ceiling white to open up the space, added a new quartz countertop to the bar, installed custom fluting around the base of the bar, lime washed the walls, and more. “The goal is to cater to all of the different kinds of celebrations that people host,” said Boes. To do this, they designed the space with classic neutral colors and little touches of character in the details like asymmetrical fixtures, hammered brass dome lights, and gold finishes.

The suite will double as a bridal suite or conference room when the furnishing is arranged differently.
“We do have additional items like décor and platters that people can rent out so they can have the most seamless experience possible,” said Boes.
For anyone who is hoping to have a microwedding, the suite upstairs offers the space to get ready onsite with other members of the wedding party.

If guests would like a bartender, that can be arranged. “We have an on-site bartender that we partner with from With a Twist. He’s kind of like a bartender on wheels,” explained Boes. Among the sisters’ growing list of preferred vendors is catering from the new authentic Brazilian cuisine next door. “Roots of Brasil next door is opening in the next couple of months, and they would do catering. The former owners of Kaladi’s Bistro and their family are starting it,” said Boes. She adds that the restaurant will offer many different menu options for catering to Convolo events.

Running has always been an important part of life for Wire Design Company founder Kristi Wire. “I used to run competitively,” said Wire. “About 10 years ago, I actually fell down a flight of stairs, which caused me to have to go through all sorts of physical therapy.”
66 |
Unsure if she would be able to run again because of lingering nerve pain, Wire jumped at the opportunity to stay involved by designing merchandise for the Sioux Falls Area Running Club two years ago. “They just happened to know me from the advertising world,” said Wire. “And I just started to think, ‘If I’m ever going to run again, if I’m ever going to try and get over this pain and whatnot, let’s do it. Let’s just dive in, start running again, design for them.’”

Familiar Details The running club logo that Wire designed pays homage to the club’s previous logo and the Sioux Falls city flag.
The initial task of creating mascots for the Trail Series of races in Union Grove State Park, Newton Hills State Park, and Tuthill Park brought an influx of attention to Wire’s designs. Inspired by the public’s interest and the running club’s suggestion to open a store selling her works, Wire turned her new design work into an online shop, which launched in August. “All of the designs were sketched by hand, then created digitally, and then basically printed through Printful. The designs are local,” said Wire.
70 |
Now the shop has more than 50 products available, with clothing options ranging from toddlers to adults and a variety of other products. Wire says her store caters specifically to athletes and animal lovers. One of the most popular items is the jackalope gold shirt, designed as a mascot for Newton Hills. Wire attributes its popularity to the connections it inspires to local colleges. “You could take that association with [South Dakota State University], yet that was not the intent,” said Wire.

The thing that I find fascinating is how people decide how to buy because, jumping in, I really didn’t know what people were going to buy.” -Kristi Wire
The other animal brands she created include an eagle for Tuthill Park, a fox for Union Grove, and a bear as a generic addition. She also designed a new logo for the Sioux Falls Area Running Club, found on her shop, and 10 percent of profits from the store go back to the club to help with events, marketing, and other expenses. When not working on the online shop, Wire also works with different companies, helping them shape their brand identity and doing design work for them on logos, labels, marketing campaigns, and other projects. “I like to work with companies that are trying to solve a problem or have a challenge, and I come in and help them visually figure that out,” said Wire. Wire has plans in store for next year involving adding more mascots to represent other parks in the Sioux Falls area. In the meantime, she continues to set up pop-up shops during the fall at various races.
The bear design is not affiliated with a specific race, but is part of Wire’s Animal Lover collection.

Erica Locke has been designing spaces for 11 years, and in January of 2020, she started Articulate LLC, a boutique interior design studio based in downtown Sioux Falls.
She says she is a registered designer with the National Council of Interior Design Qualification, one of only 30 South Dakotan designers with such recognition. Working both commercial and residential projects, clients have implemented Locke’s expertise for a range of projects from 1,000 square feet to 46,000 square feet.

“We collaborate on the possible finishes and solutions that fit the project style, budget, and timeline,” said Locke. “The greatest thing I can do is give clients ownership in the process, and they are even more proud of the end result.” As her portfolio shows, Locke works to be accommodating to each client’s preferences. “The inspiration for my work is based on so many factors, such as brand values, existing architecture, location, style preference, and the context,” she said. Locke shares more about the blueprint of her life.
I started Articulate because… I believed in
myself. Operating my own business was always my dream. My dad started his magazine publishing company at our kitchen table with a polaroid camera and X-ACTO knife. I witnessed how hard my parents worked, the sacrifices, and the ups and downs of business ownership. I knew that was going to be me someday, but I wouldn’t be where I am now without all of my past experiences.
I wouldn't have started my own business without... courage or the positive support I
received from previous clients, employers, mentors, co-workers, and my closest family and friends. Being a business owner has given me more creative freedom, but also more flexibility with my busy family of five and my own 1970s house renovation project.
Putting the “Art” in Articulate Since she was young, Erica Locke has been drawing and painting. She’s excited to be sharing a custom piece of art with clients after they’ve worked with her to “give a little something meaningful back after completion.”

Sawyer Brewing Co. saw yerbrewingco.com “Every year has surprises, but 2021 didn’t deliver anything too crazy,” said Lee Eddy, co-owner of Sawyer Brewing Co. “Spearfish saw a busy summer of travelers and tourism, so we were excited to capitalize on that.” The remote location of the brewery has brought a lot of traffic since 2020. “It seems everyone is escaping to the ‘wide open spaces’ since the pandemic,” said Ali Eddy, co-owner. “The Black Hills have seen an influx in vacationers, but also new residents, which in turn helps us to grow our customer base.” Lee says that recently Sawyer began distributing their products in northern Wyoming.
writ ten by Dawn Geertsema + photo by John Snyder “Customers have requested our beer in all of the surrounding states, but we are sticking close to home for the time being,” said Ali.
“You won’t find any TVs in our taproom, and we’ve received many, many compliments on this decision,” said Ali.
And close to home, they offer a cozy spot to enjoy their menu.
Customers, new and otherwise, can pick from various craft beers on tap at the raw-edge wood bar top and a slew of signature wood-fired pizzas.
“Our taproom has tons of wood and natural accents with warm lights—it makes people feel comfortable and hunker down to enjoy some craft beers and great conversation,” said Ali. “People comment on our design all of the time, and really dig the fact that we completed the build-out ourselves.” The atmosphere at Sawyer nurtures a calm hang out spot and focuses on human interaction rather than sports or other standard taproom features.
Pizzas include specialties like Mediterranean, Prosciutto & Arugula, and Popper, along with a few more traditional options.+

written by Dawn Geertsema + photos by Sarah Grassel “We started Side Hustle Moto to combine our love for all things motorcycle and high quality goods and design,” said co-owner Shawna Prugh, co-owner of Side Hustle Moto and Prugh Design. Shawna and her husband Michael opened the shop in Rapid City for the first time in December of 2019. Due to the pandemic, they had to close their doors again after only a few months.
The Black Hills motorcycle store reopened again in June 2020. “It’s a passion project for both of us, and it’s not just for motorcycle enthusiasts,” said Shawna. “We have something for everyone.” The Prughs sell many of their own products in their storefront. Items their brands carry include everything from apparel and stickers to coffee and mugs.

Michael Prugh Tuesday Tastings
At food truck Tuesdays at Canyon Lake Park in the summers, I always enjoy the different cuisine that comes out of a vehicle.
Summer Rush We try to hike as much as we can in the summer, but that’s our busy time so we squeeze it in when we can.
Black Hills Bites Anytime I can go out and get a good burger in the hills, I am a happy guy. Sugar Shack and Lewie’s Burgers & Brews are pretty high on the list.
Better Together We thankfully enjoy spending as much time together as possible, so our favorite things are the same—except for maybe Hallmark Christmas movies and football. That’s where we differ. Guess amongst yourselves who is who..

Kattie Lail
Reach Out for Help Call/Text: (855) 539-9375 Email: care@wefaceittogether.org Website: wefaceittogether.org
written by Dawn Geertsema + photos by Jordan Cushman
5 Questions with Lail WHAT METHODS WERE MOST EFFECTIVE FOR YOU WHEN YOU WERE OVERCOMING YOUR ADDICTION? For me it was all about the support. I had tried to get to a place of wellness before, but only made it so far relying on my own skills and thinking. I opened myself up to what advice people were offering me. Some of the things they suggested weren’t for me, but some of them changed my life.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST THING TO OVERCOME IN RECOVERY? The hardest thing to overcome was the shame. While I was using, I became a person that I never wanted to be and never thought that I could be. I had to reconcile that with the person that I truly was. For me, that is a huge part of the reason I coach: being able to let that person know that they are worth it, even when they feel like they aren’t.
Addiction comes in all shapes and sizes. For Kattie Lail, hers began at 15. “I had no idea how to live life without chemically altering my brain. I couldn’t make it stop,” explained Lail. “I decided that I wanted to quit when I was 19, but struggled getting it right until I was 29.” In July 2021, she became a peer coach at Face It TOGETHER, where she hopes to help people get back on their feet. “Face It TOGETHER peer coaching is evidence-based, confidential and available to anyone impacted by addiction, including loved ones,” said Ally Krupinsky, director of communications. Lail explains that because each coach has experience with addiction themselves, they recognize that each case is different. “A one-size-fits-all approach takes out the value of the individual. I think it’s so important to treat the person struggling with addiction as the expert on their life, rather than trying to usher everyone down the same path,” said Lail.
DO YOU HAVE ADVICE FOR THOSE STRUGGLING WITH ADDICTIONS OF THEIR OWN? Reach out for help! Struggling with addiction is one of the most isolated and lonely places to be. When you develop a sense of support and find people that you can share your thoughts and struggles with, things start to change. Find out how they did it, ask questions, and trust yourself.
HOW SHOULD PEOPLE KNOW WHEN TO COME TO COACHING? It’s not about us or our agenda, it’s about how we can help you get to the place that you would like to be. There is no judgement here. We have been there, we get it, and we care.
HOW DO PEOPLE GET STARTED? Face It TOGETHER has a great onboarding team that really works to meet people where they are. We figure out what works best for you. You’ll take our assessments and get paired with a coach who’s a good fit for you and your needs.
Take a closer look at Lail’s journey and mission.
