Riddle's Jewelry Riddle's Jewelry

Since 1959, Riddle’s Jewelry has been dedicated to helping customers celebrate life’s important relationships and events.
Founder Jesse Riddle was an entrepreneur at heart and held a love for jewelry. To fuel his passion, he worked in a local jewelry store and attended jewelry school before continuing to earn his business degree from the University of South Dakota
Jesse combined his long-time love for jewelry and entrepreneurial spirit when he opened the first Riddle’s Jewelry store in Webster.
As the company began to expand, Jesse sought help and formed a partnership with his brother, Bob Riddle. Soon after, more family members joined the business, and the rest is history with second and third-generation Riddles taking the helm.

Sixty-four years later, Riddle’s Jewelry remains a family-owned business, with 65 stores across South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Colorado, and counting.
Brett Riddle, current president and CEO, says his father was always passionate about his work and therefore never worked a day in his life.
“He worked incredibly hard, but to him, it wasn’t work,” recalled Brett. “He loved what he did and his family.”

At a young age Brett and his sister Tamara Riddle-Schumacher, board chair of manufacturing, dipped their toes into the jewelry business. After college, the siblings entered the family business as full-time employees in 1991.
Brett began his career hands-on in the stores as a regional manager, but quickly shifted gears into purchasing merchandise and property for the company.
“I worked and traveled to our various locations in the beginning, while my sister started more in the diamond buying and design,” explained Brett.
As Riddle’s Jewelry continued to rise rapidly in retail, the company decided to expand in a new direction and enter the manufacturing world. In 1980, the company opened a factory in Rapid City to produce Black Hills Gold and create its own diamond and gemstone jewelry.

In an effort to expand within the manufacturing business, the family began to purchase properties and other jewelry manufacturers.
“We were always Mount Rushmore Gold , but we continued to grow by purchasing Rushmore Gold , South Dakota Gold , Landstroms Black Hills Gold Company, and Black Hills Gold by Coleman,” said Brett.
With recently purchasing a diamond wholesale company, Brett also spoke of their growth within the wholesale industry.
“We currently have 15 representatives that work with over 1,200 different jewelry companies to sell diamonds, gemstones, silver, charms, and our Black Hills Gold,” he explained.
Brett reflects while building and expanding a business can be difficult, the Riddle family ensures they work closely with one another to achieve their goals.
“We couldn’t have done it without the great people who work with us and our amazing customers,” said Brett.
Riddle’s Jewelry strives to serve its customers in whatever way possible, whether it be through in-house jewelry repairs, or stone setting, and selling them beautiful jewelry.

Overall, the family’s favorite part of working in what they call "the love business" is being able to share special moments with their customers.
From engagements and anniversaries to holidays like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Christmas, Riddle’s Jewelry is devoted to serving its customer's unique needs and sense of style.
Brett describes the joy in helping to create and share those precious moments in someone's life and make people’s dreams come true.
“We remember those moments and our customers remember those moments they spend with us picking out that special piece of jewelry for their loved one,” said Brett.
Those shared moments are cherished in households for generations.

“We have people coming in telling stories about my dad from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s that are still shopping with us,” said Brett.
Brett continued, “We want to be that generational jeweler, we were here for your grandparents, we were here for your parents, and now we are here for you. When the next generation comes along, we hope that families say, ‘Well you better go to Riddle’s.’”

As the third generation of the Riddle’s family continues to move into the business, Brett explains that it is his generation's goal to help keep the family legacy alive.

“It’ll be my sister’s and my job to prepare them to learn and understand the business,” said Brett. “They’ll be the ones managing the business down the road.”
Brett continues on to say how important it is for the upcoming generations to experience the same opportunities the second generation did.
“We aim to pass down the vision and teachings from the first generation and what we’ve learned over the years as well,” said Brett.
Brett shares his simple advice for future generations to always care for their family members in the business and to always think of the good in everyone.

When Sarah Grassel began pursuing a career in photography, she never anticipated starting her own business.
“I thought I wanted to be a photojournalist for National Geographic,” said Grassel. “Then I started college and everything changed.
Upon meeting her husband, Isaac, Grassel was taken on a new path in life, but she never lost sight of her dream. Grassel says he inspired her to discover a new love for photography and what she wanted out of life.
“Issac helped me discover my passion for telling stories as a whole and helping those who don’t have the voice to share their stories,” said Grassel. As a result, Wandering Wilde Media LLC was created.

QBIC LUXURY PICNICS
High school sweethearts Sabena and Isaac Carter take celebrations to the next level. On the couple’s second wedding anniversary, Sabena was looking for a special way to celebrate when she saw luxury picnics all over Pinterest.
“That would be kind of cute in a Sioux Falls park,” she thought.
With a picnic table already at her disposal, Sabena went thrifting, picked up food from Olive Garden, and told Isaac to meet her at McKennan Park .
The surprise luxury picnic was a success for the couple, and quickly became something they wanted to provide for others in the city.
A self described planner, Sabena has been organizing gatherings for years.
“Back in high school I used to throw themed dance parties,” she said, “so I was very complex with my planning, even at that time.”

After graduating from Southeast Technical College with a degree in entrepreneurship and business administration, Sabena was equipped with the skills to start a business of her own.
Isaac’s role in the business? “I’m definitely a support player,” he said. “She’s got a very entrepreneurial spirit, and I assist in any way I can. I’ve always got her back.”
In addition to supporting, Isaac came up with the name for the business by combining two sets of initials.
“I’ve always called her Queen Bean, that’s like my nickname for her,” said Isaac.
Those initials, Q.B., combined with Isaac’s own initials, I.C., forms QBIC

Together, the Carters form a team to personalize every picnic. Clients get their own colors, letterboard message, tablescape, and charcuterie board. There is no singular template for a picnic, so the results are always different and customized to the picnickers.

During one picnic, Isaac remembered, a yellow rose was significant to a couple celebrating 49 years together, so the Carters included the rose and other special touches.
In their first year of business, QBIC organized around 100 picnics for the Sioux Falls area.
Though the majority of the picnics are for couples, birthdays, surprise parties, anniversaries, and date nights, all special occasions are welcome.

Isaac and Sabena both have other jobs, but they agree that QBIC is a fulfilling side hustle and make sure they are available to provide as many picnics as possible.
“We make it available for anyone to have a picnic from 5-10 p.m. on weekdays and noon-10 p.m. on weekends,” said Sabena.
The Carters find that it is a very gratifying service to provide.
“You can see the excitement in their eyes,” Sabena said of her clients. The picnics are often a surprise for one or more of the guests.
Isaac agrees: he loves to see guest’s reactions to “the excitement, the happiness, and the unique memory we brought them.”
The Carters always offer to take a photo for their clients before cleaning up the picnic, and have had the ability to witness more than a few proposals.


“It just makes me happy,” said Sabena.

CASETTA

Amy Boes and Angela MerriTt, owners of the Convolo event Venue, found they were receiving more rental requests than they could book.
“Our first year of business with Convolo was very fruitful, and we were humbled by the feedback from the community,” said Boes. “We were turning renters away because they were wanting to book a time or day that was already unavailable.”
In an effort to avoid turning potential renters away, the pair opened their sister event space, Casetta
“Casetta” is the Italian word for “little house,” which was inspired by the building's exterior and location in Sioux Falls.
“We highlighted the gable-style house that it’s in,” said Boes. “It’s a very quaint structure near residential areas. It feels like a cozy home and is very welcoming.”

Previously home to the interior design firm, Houndstooth House, Boes explains the building's established features were the perfect fit for their new event space.

With bright white walls, white shiplap ceilings, black interior accents, Cambria black quartz backsplash, and an electric fireplace, Casetta offers a clean and modern look.
Boes states that she and Merritt added their own personal touches to match their brand, making the building truly their own.
The 1,792-square-foot building can entertain 50 guests seated and 65 standing. Merritt describes Casetta as the perfect space for smaller, more intimate gatherings such as rehearsal dinners, showers, and celebrations.
Boes adds that a special aspect of Casetta is the convenient and smooth rental process.

“We wanted to make sure our venue offered a seamless experience,” explained Boes. “It’s like an Airbnb event space and a self-hosted process.”
Renters are able to rent the space online and will be given instructions and a code to access the building for their event time frame. Tables and chairs are included in the rental, but if renters require additional seating, the sisters say they recommend their neighboring business, ABC Rentals Special Events
Boes adds that setup and tear-down services are available to help with convenience.
Décor items such as linens, platters, vases, and centerpieces are also available for rent.










They explain that it was important for Casetta to have a conference room available for various business ventures.
“We get a lot of corporate bookings at Convolo and we wanted something that was truly built for conferences,” said Boes.
The conference room can accommodate various business events such as off-site meetings, corporate events, and business anniversary celebrations.
Those who would like extra space for their event are able to rent out both spaces.
Casetta offers no limitations on catering. Boes explains that their renters are allowed to bring their own food, beer, wine, or caterers.
With the conference room hosting a kitchenette and refrigerator, Boes mentions that it’s the perfect preparation station for caterers.
The sisters expressed that, just like Convolo, they wanted to create a neutral event space for their renters.

“The design for both of our spaces was to be design forward, thoughtful, and intentional,” said Boes.

The duo asked themselves what they woud like to see in an event space to create an area where everyone’s theme can speak loudly.
“Not everyone’s style is the same,” said Boes. “We wanted people to be inspired when they're in this space.”
With unique staple pieces throughout the venue, it’s still subtle yet versatile enough that guests can still make the event their own, adds Merritt.

“We’re very passionate about events and hosting, and it’s been fun to see how people make use of the venue. They’ve gotten very creative,” said Boes.
Boes expressed that through their event spaces, she and Merritt have been able to reach the community outside of their rentals.
“ I love the opportunity to work closely with my sister & meet so many new people during a really exciting time for them. ”






“One of the best parts about working in the event world has been getting to know and working with all of the talented vendors in Sioux Falls,” said Boes. “We’ve been working with small businesses to see what other types of events we can bring to the community.”
As the sisters begin to transition into the event world fulltime, they share what plans they have in store for 2023. Convolo and Casetta are expanding with a larger-scale wedding venue, Monick Yards

“We’re partnering with the owners of Highball Bar, The Treasury at Hotel On Phillips, and Carpenter Bar to open a downtown venue,” said Boes.

The new 12,000-square-foot space will offer an urban experience for any occasion with an industrial ambiance and thoughtful finishes.
Monick Yards will have a capacity of up to 400 people and will be located near Convolo, on 8th Street.


After seeing specialty soda shops popping up in places like Arizona and Utah (where she was visiting family), Katy Rees wanted to kick sodas up a notch in Sioux Falls.
“A gal decided that she was going to start making flavored sodas at a little drive thru in St. George, Utah and the concept took off out there,” said Katy. “So we were like, ‘Oh we’ve heard about it, let’s try it.’”
The concept came to fruition, and her business SoDak Soda Gourmet Soda Bar opened its doors early this past July in a retail center on West Trevi Place off of 85th Street. Katy says the family looked for almost a year for the right location.

“It was a combination of things, like finding something available with a drive thru (because that was really important to us), finding something that was affordable for a new business, and wanting to find a location where there would be families and a variety of population coming through,” she explained.
Patrons can go through the drive thru or go inside to choose from a variety of soda add-ins, like syrups, purée and cream, and fruit. Sodas include go-tos like Coke and Pepsi products, ginger ale, lemonade, and root beer, and come in 44 ounce, 32 ounce, 24 ounce, or 16 ounce cups.

All about the base

Along with the soda base, customers can also add a still Base, sparkling water base, or an energy base.

Not sure what to pick for an add-on?
Try choosing from the Favorites menu with over 20 options. A few include the Sweetheart with Crush soda , strawberry purée, and pineapple, and the Sunrise with Mountain Dew, orange, and vanilla.


“We created the Favorites menu along with using some favorites from other places, so we usually recommend that they start with that and then expand,” said Katy.
One of the most ordered drinks is the Abby Lou , which was named and created by Katy’s daughter.
“My daughter Abigail created the Abby Lou on the menu and she put it with Diet Coke, but she combined French vanilla and salted caramel syrups,” she recalled. “That has been one of our really popular ones.”

Abby also works at SoDak Soda part time, while Katy's son is one of the shop’s regulars.
“My son is a paying customer on a regular basis,” said Katy. “He will come through the drive thru and I won’t even know it’s him because sometimes I don’t recognize his voice on the speaker.”
" On a drive home from Yellowstone, we started talking with the kids & thought it would be so fun to start our own business.
Of course at that time we were really just talking, but then we came up with a name & we had the idea. next thing you know two years later we have a soda shop.

There is a lot that we didn't realize we were going to deal with that was overwhelming, and that has been difficult. But if you don’t give it a try you don’t know if you can do it or not, so we just went for it.

The company strives to be a family friendly place for people to relax, have fun, and enjoy a soda and a snack.

Snacks include Cookies, Rice Krispie Bars, Scotcharoos, Chips & Salsa , and Pretzels with Cheese Sauce.
“We see all kinds of people in here,” said Katy. “We see older people, high schoolers, families, and moms coming through during the day for a break from their kids.”
She continued, “And that was really our goal. We want this to be a place where anyone feels comfortable coming and can come and get a fun treat.”

With Hanzlik listing her previously owned photography studio along the busy street, the two began to conjure ideas of what the property could become.
“I remember us saying how someone should put in a kitchen store and Angi said, ‘Well, we should do it,’” said Peterson.
As Chamberlain residents traveled to Mitchell, Sioux Falls, or Rapid City to purchase quality kitchenware and gourmet foods, the friends acknowledged a desire for such items.
“We wanted to bring our small town a store where our customers can feel like they’re in a big town with quality items,” said Peterson.
With the help of their husbands, the pair began to transform the brick-and-mortar location into Berry + Basil.
“We wanted to create a space that we wanted to spend our days in and hopefully others would like to come in and hang out with us,” said Peterson.

Berry + Basil offers free in-store pick-up for locals.

Opening in the midst of the pandemic, the pair didn’t see it as an obstacle, but rather the perfect opportunity for the Chamberlain community.
“At the time, everyone began to appreciate family meals,” said Peterson. “Everyone began to cook and bake more.”
According to Peterson and Hanzlik, opening during this time didn’t come without its challenges. Neither of them could attend kitchenware expositions or meet with distributors to handle and test potential products.

“We depended heavily on products and brands that we loved and had in our very own kitchens,” explained Peterson. “We also had a lot of guidance from other kitchen store owners and sales representatives who have become our family and mentors.”
“They have all been very kind and helpful, and that was something we are grateful for,” added Hanzlik.

As self-titled "Curators of Joy", the pair's goal for Berry + Basil was simple: to bring joy back into the kitchen.
“We wanted to bring the joy back into the kitchen and family gatherings, as well as to bring back traditions and cultivate a feeling of togetherness,” said Hanzlik.
Hanzlik and Peterson believe that the art of cooking should be enjoyed and cherished with tools that make lives easier.
“My grandma always said that the kitchen should be the one place that brings us joy, and if a tool frustrates us, it shouldn’t be in our kitchen,” reflected Peterson.
In response, the two believe that every kitchen should be filled with beautiful things that make people smile. They laugh as they say that pretty things make everyone happy. Kitchenware items can go beyond their simple purpose to spark inspiration.
“It could be something as simple as a dishtowel in our favorite color,” said Peterson. “It’s not that it just does its job, it's an item that when we’re using it, it makes us feel something.”






When customers walk into Berry + Basil, they can expect to feel welcomed and inspired.
“We want the store to be an experience and hope that everything we’ve curated makes it an uplifting experience,” said Hanzlik.
The kitchenware haven carries a variety of primary and specialty kitchen items and gourmet foods.
Hanzlik adds that they carry anything anyone would need in the kitchen from staple necessities like pots, pans, bakeware, utensils, and knives to specialty olive oils, seasonings, vinegar, coffee, tea, and wine.

The duo works to continually search for and curate beautiful, high-quality, functional, and fair-priced must haves.
Berry + Basil also carries a signature line of lotion, hand soap, and air fresheners. The pair worked with Prairie Artisan Fragrances to create two signature scents.

Berry + Basil has been able to serve the Chamberlain community in more ways than one.
The store is able to transform into a space to host various events from wine tastings, to meat-and-cheese tastings, private parties, and bridal showers.

“It’s a fun space, while yes there’s shopping but it ultimately comes back to why we created the space, —a place where people want to hang out,” said Peterson.
Hanzlik and Peterson explain that their dreams could not have come true without the support from their family, community, and each other.
“Our dream evolved to more than what we thought it could be, and to have it come to life has been a tribute to our partnership,” said Peterson.
The pair share that their goals remain consistent in providing and helping create memorable experiences for their area.
“A day doesn’t go by where someone comes in and thanks us for being here, and that makes Angi and I feel very special,” said Peterson.










CENTRAL PLAINS BAT REMOVAL CENTRAL PLAINS BAT REMOVAL

“Rebranding our company is something we’re very excited about, and with the success we have had over the years, the demand for our services continues to expand,” said co-owner, Jill Kolb
“We want our company name to be more applicable to serving our customers in the Midwest but also in the South, East Coast, and West.”
CP Bat Mitigation is a family-owned and operated business whose mission is to safely remove bats from homes, businesses, schools, and churches.
While employed in the roofing industry, owner John Kolb developed an interest in bat removal. His concern about the process grew after he realized bats could enter homes directly through roof crevices.

“I knew there was an issue but didn’t know the extent of bat removal issues,” said John.
The Sioux Falls-based company opened its doors in 2017, and since then has provided bat mitigation services throughout South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, western Minnesota, and eastern Wyoming in commercial and residential entities.

The Little Brown Bat is the most common bat species in South Dakota.
BAT REMOVAL VS. ANIMAL CONTROL
Location, location, location!
The best way to remove bats from your attic or walls is by hiring a bat removal company.

In the event that bats are flying around your home/business or roosting outdoors, it’s best to contact Animal Control.
As bats are able to fit through holes only a quarter inch wide, they’re able to sneak into homes and businesses in stealthy ways.
Jill says bats commonly enter homes through small holes in attics, cracks in bricks, and chimneys, or simply by leaving a garage or back door open overnight.
Jill explains that their bat removal experts have built a removal process that provides a smooth experience for customers.
“It’s a two-step process,” said Jill. “We go out and check customers' properties and identify where the bats are coming from.”
During an initial consultation, the team will take the time to explain exactly how the bats enter and exit the property.
Jill says that their team will offer a complimentary quote based on the property's structure, and customers can set an installation date to begin the removal process.

A senior installer comes to the property and identifies the most frequented entries and exits, also known as the “honey holes.” When the holes are discovered, a bat cone is placed at the point of entry, acting as a slide, preventing the bats from returning. Jill explains that this is an important step due to bats being creatures of habit.
“They will recognize your home as their home,” said Jill. “However when the bats leave to feed, they’ll figure out they can’t come back in.”
After ensuring all the bats are gone, the senior installer will come back to the home or business and apply a sealant
permanently cover the previous entryway.
Jill adds that their team will return to the property at a later date to evaluate if the mitigation process was a success. If on a rare occasion bats return, CP Bat Mitigation will resume their services until all the bats are removed.
“We’re always going to come back and take care of our customers till the very end,” said Jill.
While bats can become the upfront problem, it is important to understand the damage they can cause, too.

DID YOU KNOW?
Little brown bats only have a few natural predators, like owls or raccoons.
Unfortunately, most of their mortality is caused by parasites or white-nose syndrome.
White-nose syndrome is the result of a fungus that invades and ingests hibernating bats' wings and muzzles. This causes the bats to wake up more frequently during the winter, which rapidly uses up their limited fat reserves.

FUN FACT:
A bat’s lifespan ranges from 25 to 40 years. The little brown bat only ranges from 6 to 10 years.
Bat feces (also known as guano) and urine can lead to structural damage. The high levels of uric acid in bat guano is able to erode metal, clay, and wood structures with time. Jill states that it's more common to see the damages when a large colony of bats inhabits an attic.
“If that's the case, our team will come in and do an attic restoration,” said Jill.
Aside from structural damages, the guano and urine can also cause health issues to the building's inhabitants.
“Anytime you disturb guano, you’re allowing those spores to open up, and that’s when it becomes a health hazard,” said Jill.
Inhaling the spores will cause an infection called Histoplasmosis. This infection can go unnoticed by many, but identifying factors include fever, chills, headache, and chest pain.
Jill adds that if someone is willing to take a quick look into their attic, it’s important for them to wear the proper respirator.
In case a bat or bat guano is found anywhere in one's home or business, she advises against attempting to remove it by yourself out of concern for exposure to illness or disease.

“We have the proper removal process, and the experts who know what to do,” said Jill. “Don’t take the chance of putting yourself at risk.”
Bats don’t always cause harm, and Kolb expresses that due to cartoons and Halloween, people typically have a misconception about them.
“Bats will not suck your blood or dive down at you,” said Jill. “They’re not intentionally trying to come after you. They’re more scared of you than you are scared of them.”
Bats play an essential role in the environment but have been at risk of extinction and must remain protected.

I have three children, ages 23, 17, and 11.
When I was 14, my twin sister and I took over our older brother’s garbagehauling business.

I was Miss Huron in 1992, and in that same year I was in the Miss South Dakota Pageant. Because of that honor, I was able to meet Garth Brooks at the South Dakota State Fair.
We buy the finest corn-fed angus and age it on premise for a minimum of 28 days before cutting. From our rustic, comfortable, cowboy atmospshere to our special hi-temp infrared broiler to sear in juices, Dakotah Steakhouse was built to serve steak.







Summertime Bliss
Platte Creek Campground is one of my favorite places to be in the summer, from sitting around the campfire to boating on the Missouri River - I have no complaints.

Whether it’s summer or winter, I love going to my brother-in-law’s hunting lodge, Dakota Wild Wings in Miller. Spending time in the snow, on the pickleball court, or practicing shooting are some of my favorite things to do there.

Mitchell’s Go-To
The Depot Pub & Grill is one of my all-time favorite spots to hang out, from the food to the service, it’s an amazing place. It’s my go-to for hosting events, celebrating family, and unwinding with friends.

5 Questions with Murdy
What drew you into the banking industry?
As a young professional, I found myself getting more and more interested in the numbers side of business. It was at that point I decided to go back to school for my MBA and, not long after, an opportunity to get into the financial industry presented itself. I started off in consumer banking, but when I moved to the business side, I never looked back.

The better question is what isn’t covered by a business loan? That’s why I encourage people to just start that conversation. It all depends on the business and the purpose of the loan. It can range from start-up funds, working capital, operating lines, and capital expenditures, to business expansion, real estate acquisition, construction projects, to refinancing.
If you were to start a business on your own, what Steps would you take?
To start, I would research to understand where there are market opportunities, who my competition is, and how I would differentiate myself, then it’s time to business plan. This would be overwhelming on my own, so next, I would reach out to my nearest Small Business Development Center to formalize my plan. During the business planning process, I would want to understand my break-even points, projected income, and how much market share is needed to be profitable to make my dream business a reality.
What piece of advice would you give to someone starting a business?
Make sure you’re passionate about whatever it is you’re starting, staff and customers will take notice. It takes time, energy, and effort to grow a business, that’s why it’s equally as important to have a good team behind you. You’re required to wear numerous hats and working with a business lender helps are a couple of those. We’re here to be the encouraging voice in your ear and remind you that slow and steady wins the race.
