GREETINGS!

On behalf of the City of Columbus, I am proud to welcome runners, walkers, family and friends to Downtown Columbus for the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon.

I am delighted to welcome you to our community. We are “America’s Opportunity City” – rich in history and poised for continued growth well into the future. We are a welcoming community, too, a place that draws people from all over the country to meet, compete and visit. We have dynamic entertainment districts and friendly neighborhoods, many of which you will discover during the Half Marathon, OhioHealth Quarter Marathon and the new Columbus Promise 5K.

Columbus is among the top sports destinations in the United States. In fact, just last month, we again hosted March Madness and the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball and Division I Women’s Basketball Championships, which brought a tremendous amount of energy, excitement and national attention to our city. In recent years, we’ve also hosted the NCAA Division I Volleyball Championships, the NCAA Women’s Final Four and the NHL AllStar Weekend.

While you are here, we invite you to explore the many things we love about our community: the world-class Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Franklin Park Conservatory, COSI, and fantastic shopping, restaurants and nightlife in the Arena District, Short North, German Village, Easton Town Center and dozens of other charming neighborhoods.

Good luck – and thank you for supporting the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon!

Sincerely,

WELCOME!

Thank you for joining us for this very special day. It’s a day that you are challenging yourself, meeting a goal and crossing the finish line.

It’s also a day that marks the 20th anniversary of the OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon. That’s twenty years of runners and walkers — from all experience levels — lacing up together in celebration of healthy active lifestyles.

As central Ohio’s largest health system and second largest employer, we are proud to be your partner today and are excited to share that we have renewed our title partner commitment for another five years.

Whether you’re among the 12,000 participants off to the races or here cheering on friends and family, I ask that you take a moment to practice gratitude and recognize your personal achievements.

There’s no denying we’re living through trying times, but today, you are here. You are part of a community that takes challenges in stride and believes in the power of putting one foot in front of the other.

On behalf of the 35,000 OhioHealth associates, physicians and volunteers who care for you on race day and every day, we wish you a great run.

Dear Friends, Participants and Partners:

Welcome to Columbus – my hometown – for the 20th Anniversary Edition of the OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon and brand-new Columbus Promise 5K.

We are thrilled to CELEBRATE YOU and 20 YEARS at this year’s OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon. This year’s CELEBRATION of the Healthy Active Lifestyle will be our biggest and best yet. Cap City is YOUR RACE in YOUR CITY and we THANK YOU for your never-ending support over the past two decades.

Since 2004, the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon has focused on the CELEBRATION and PARTICIPATION of our runners and walkers. Our goal is to provide the ultimate experience for our participants, partners and the community.

We thank Mayor Andrew J. Ginther, the City of Columbus, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners, the Greater

Columbus Sports Commission, the Columbus Police and Fire divisions and all of the other local support agencies for their support.

This year we have two new, exciting partnerships to share with our participants. The Cap City 5K is now the Columbus Promise 5K and we are proud to work with the City of Columbus, Columbus State Community College, I Know I Can and Columbus City Schools to promote and support the Columbus Promise program that guarantees a tuition-free college education for all Columbus City Schools graduates at Columbus State.

We also worked with the Columbus Fashion Alliance on the design of this year’s 20th Anniversary event shirt. The Columbus Fashion Alliance is a collective that promotes the growth of the local fashion industry and independent designers.

The OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon would not be possible without the remarkable support of our corporate partners led by our world-class title partner OhioHealth. OhioHealth is a nationally recognized healthcare organization based in Columbus and among the top five large health systems in the United States. OhioHealth shares our passion of promoting fitness and celebrating the active healthy lifestyle. We are proud to have the OhioHealth Foundation as the official benefiting charity of the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon.

We also thank the 1,500 volunteers who donate countless hours to guarantee your success on Event Day. We could not produce the CELEBRATION without them.

Thank you again for your support of the 20th Anniversary Edition of the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon. I can’t wait to Greet YOU at the Start Line and Celebrate YOU at the Finish Line!

RUNNERS & WALKERS:

On behalf of Franklin County and all of our residents, welcome to the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the 2023 OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon.

Half marathons are as much about competing as they are about exercise and promoting a healthy lifestyle. Franklin County is leading the way in supporting our community to stay active and committed to their health and wellness and we know that a strong community requires a healthy one.

We are indeed a destination on the rise because of our diverse and accessible blend of urban, suburban and rural attractions. Through our community’s infrastructure, amenities, convenience and affordability, Columbus annually hosts a variety of professional, collegiate, amateur and youth sports events, including the OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon each year since 2004.

I congratulate the OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon on 20 years of success in Central Ohio. The event has become a spring celebration of the healthy and active lifestyle in Columbus and I am proud to say that I have run with you in this event several times!

WELCOME!

On behalf of my colleagues on City Council and all residents of our city, welcome to Columbus for the 20th Anniversary OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon.

This year we are proud to announce the creation of the Columbus Promise 5K, a unique partnership with the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon and M3S Sports that will raise awareness and opportunities for the Columbus Promise Program. The Columbus Promise is a guarantee to new Columbus City School graduates that if they graduate and fill out the FAFSA, then they can attend Columbus State Community College tuition-free. The Columbus Promise’s simple guarantee doubled new Columbus City School enrollment at Columbus State Community College, allowing more than 600 students to attend college with free tuition, support services, and a stipend. We’re excited to serve even more families through the Columbus Promise 5K.

Beyond this new partnership, the Capital City Half Marathon is a special event for residents and visitors alike because it takes participants on an incredible tour through some of our city’s unique areas and entertainment districts. Participants will see distinct neighborhoods such as Downtown, German Village, the Short North Arts District, The Ohio State University campus, Italian Village and the Arena District.

Hosting events such as the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon keeps our city moving forward. Cap City brings 12,000 runners and walkers, along with more than 25,000 friends and family, to our city on Race Day. Events like Cap City energize our city and carry tremendous economic impact.

Thank you for supporting the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon and the City of Columbus. Whether a long-time resident or first-time visitor, we hope you enjoy your time in downtown Columbus and come back again soon!

Sincerely,

Cap City, Columbus Promise Program Team Up To Create Columbus Promise 5K

The OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon renamed its popular 5K running and walking event the Columbus Promise 5K this year as part of a unique partnership between M3S Sports and the new Columbus Promise program that provides free tuition to new Columbus City Schools (CCS) graduates attending Columbus State Community College (CSCC).

“This new partnership with M3S Sports is a tremendous way to amplify awareness and opportunity for Columbus kids,” said Columbus City Council President Shannon G. Hardin. “The Columbus Promise’s simple guarantee doubled new CCS enrollment at CSCC, allowing more than 600 students to attend college with free tuition, support services, and a stipend. We’re excited to serve even more families through the Columbus Promise 5K.”

The Columbus Promise was announced in November 2021 and provides tuition-free education at Columbus State Community College for new Columbus City School graduates. The City of Columbus, Columbus State Community College, I Know I Can and Columbus City Schools developed the program based on the national College Promise model used in other cities and states.

“We are thrilled to work with Council President Shannon Hardin, Mayor Andrew J. Ginther, Columbus State, I Know I Can, and Columbus City Schools to support the Columbus Promise program and help guarantee that every high-school graduate in our city can go to college,” Race Director David Babner said. “M3S Sports and the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon prides itself in supporting our community over the past two decades and there is no better way to do that than to send high school graduates to Columbus State.”

The Columbus Promise 5K is open to all Columbus Promise scholars thanks to the support of the Columbus State Foundation. M3S Sports will donate a portion of the proceeds from the 5K to The Columbus Promise Fund.

“This is an awesome opportunity for central Ohio to celebrate and support Columbus Promise alongside some of the students benefitting from the program,” said Columbus State President Dr. David Harrison. “Thanks to everyone running, walking and otherwise supporting opportunities for students to earn their college degrees.”

The City of Columbus serves as the overall program champion and invested the initial $4 million to seed The Columbus Promise Fund. The remaining $5.5 million for phase one of the program is split between public and private funders, including OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon Official Partners OhioHealth and PNC.

PATH TO ACHIEVEMENT

Joanie Wilson was 58 years old and had recently been diagnosed with a bone disease when she heard then-10TV anchor Andrea Cambern talking about the inaugural Capital City Half Marathon.

“I decided right then and there that I was not going to let (osteoporosis) get to me,” Wilson recalled. “So, I called my twin sister and we decided to sign up, even if we had to crawl across the finish line.

“The race was only three weeks away and we really had no training, but we did it and I have been doing it every year since.”

Wilson, 78, will cross the finish line at the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon for the 20th straight year when she finishes the Half Marathon holding hands with her granddaughter, Liza Cooper, 24 and grandson, Jaxon Wilson, 19.

“I had never run anything before Cap City and I really haven’t run anything since,” Wilson said. “I was hooked on Cap City after the first year and I figured I might as well keep it up. It was good for me.”

Race day

+ Preview the race route. Knowing the route ahead of time allows you to prepare mentally and physically for your race. Take note of medical and refueling stations, and drink options along the course.

+ Be prepared. Lay out your gear the night before and fill out the details on your race bib. Make sure all of your devices (watch, phone, headphones) are charged up and ready to go.

+ Wear layers. Choose items to stay warm and dry with layers of clothing you aren’t afraid to toss.

+ Follow the 15-degree rule: Dress for your run like it’s 15 degrees warmer than the current temperature.

+ Fuel up! Eat breakfast before arriving at the race. Choose easy-to-digest carb-rich foods with a little protein and choose foods you’ve eaten while training. Eat a simple-carb snack 15-30 minutes before the race gun goes off. While in the corral, sip on a sports drink and get some final fuel with graham crackers, a banana, or sports gel. Again, stick with what you’ve trained with.

Before After RUN TIPS the race the race

+ Race day isn’t the time to try something new. Stick with the clothes, shoes and foods you know.

+ Pick a parking lot or bus route. There’s a map on the race website

+ Relax, stretch and smile! It took a lot of hard work to get here today. Enjoy the moment!

+ Pace yourself. Designated runners will maintain consistent minutes-per-mile paces to help keep you on track. Or, use a smart watch or other device to help set your pace and stick with the tempo at which you have been training.

+ Use adhesive bandages or balm to prevent chafing. The medical stations will have petroleum jelly.

+ Stay hydrated. Refueling stations are designed to move runners along quickly.

+ If you see a runner in distress, alert medical personnel along the course.

+ Warning flags will be flying at each refueling station. If they’re not green, stay alert and follow instructions.

+ Clear the chute. Keeping the finish line clear keeps your fellow runners safe.

+ Keep moving. A “warm down” after your race is a really good idea to help with soreness and recovery. A slow walk or really light jog can go a long way!

+ Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Drinking water or sports drinks will help you recover.

+ Take a victory stretch! Proper stretching will help with your recovery. OhioHealth personnel at the stretching and cooling tent are ready to help.

+ Listen to your body. If you have pain that won’t go away, talk to a sports medicine doctor or call the OhioHealth Sports Medicine Helpline at (614) 566-GAME (4263)

+ Recap, review, reset. Think about what you did well on race day and goal set for your next race. Need tips for staying healthy, getting faster, or setting training plans to meet your goals? Call the experts at the OhioHealth Runner’s Clinic, (614) 566-1RUN.

The best thing you can do leading up to race day is stick to your training plan. Continue to hydrate well and eat whole foods while minimizing junk foods and fast foods as much as you can. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, seeds, and nuts are great sources of protein and fiber that will give you plenty of energy on race day. Also, one of my favorite things about a long run is a great playlist! Don’t forget to choose songs with high “beats per minute” along with any other songs that get you pumped up! Good luck on race day!

OhioHealth Cold Cap Therapy Program

A portion of race registration for the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon will go to the OhioHealth Foundation. The Foundation will use those dollars to provide funding for OhioHealth’s Cold Cap Therapy program, an innovative cancer care treatment that can help prevent or minimize hair loss from chemotherapy. Most traditional insurance plans do not cover costs associated with cold capping, so this philanthropic support means cancer patients can retain a sense of dignity and control during their treatment journey.

“It essentially freezes patients’ scalps in order to save their hair during some chemotherapy treatments,” said Bethany Golden, president of the Over My Head Boutique at the OhioHealth Bing Cancer Center and the Dublin Cancer Center. Patients wear their cold caps before, during and after treatment and they, along with a support person, are trained in how to use them by the team at Over My Head.

Jen Ernst is a four-time Cap City participant. She’s also a breast cancer survivor, who chose to utilize cold capping during her treatment.

“When I was told I had cancer and would undergo chemotherapy, my biggest fear was losing my hair,” Jen said. “I dreaded the thought of receiving looks of pity or encountering unsolicited conversations from strangers. I was thrilled when I learned that cold cap therapy was a service offered through the Over My Head Boutique at OhioHealth.”

So far, more than 130 patients have been able to receive cold cap therapy, thanks to donor support of the OhioHealth Foundation. Based on the average out-of-pocket cost per patient for cold cap therapy, the OhioHealth Foundation has been able to cover about 75 percent of that cost. Additional funding is vital to sustain and grow OhioHealth’s Cold Cap Therapy program and defray direct costs to patients on their cancer treatment journey.

Jen is thankful to this year’s participants for helping to support cold cap therapy through their registration.

“Cold cap therapy is an out-of-pocket expense and may not be an option for everyone,” Jen said. “Not only will the philanthropic support increase the accessibility to patients, but I believe it will help raise awareness about cold capping. Battling cancer is hard and everyone should have access to a therapy that can help maintain their confidence and dignity, provide hope and give them the strength they need to fight.”
