WE DIVE INTO SUMMER ATHENS AGAIN THIS YEAR We are so glad to publish this annual summer issue not only because we are so proud of the beauty of our capital city, but also because we are able to share our city experiences and suggestions with you. In the following pages you can have a taste of what life in Athens means. A vivid amalgam of culture and history, activities and interesting sights. We encourage you to live in Athens like a local. In fact, visiting Athens is like you enter a vast museum; full of historic traces in every corner, full of exhibitions, and full of fun activities to do. Don’t hesitate to stand at every spot that catches your interest, look around you and discover the real centre of Athens. Athens is the place where real life meets history. A place that jumbles some statues, easily found in the city, with some Athenian people, who share their experience in their beloved capital city. Also, we don’t miss to introduce you to the traditional Greek music, so that you get in touch with some ordinary music instruments. Watch out! We present to you two types of tourists and two types of local people you have to avoid, so that you don’t get on your nerves! Visit the athenian markets, mix with the locals and live your dream holidays in Greece! Summer in Athens means strong sun -even heatwaves!- long nights that keep you awake till the first morning hours, with the taste of the alcohol -probably because of the wine- on your lips. INSCRIPTIONS OF ANCIENT GREECE

EPIGRAPHIC MUSEUM Epigraphic Museum of Athens houses the largest collection of ancient inscriptions, the primary historical sources that provide valuable information for all aspects of public and private life of antiquity. Most of the inscriptions derive from Attica, the birth place of democracy, but also from other areas of the ancient Greek world. Dating from the 8th cent. B.C. until Byzantine, Post Byzantine and later times, the 14078 inscriptions on stone are written mainly in ancient Greek language. A smaller number of inscriptions are written in Latin as well as in other languages (Phoenician, Hebrew and Ottoman).

THE BEST MUSEUM OF ALL IS... ...ATHENS! Can you imagine a museum in which the entrance is free? In which you can speak as loudly as you want, drink and eat whatever you want? A museum that never closes its doors? Oh, that would be awesome if it was real… And, hopefully, it is. This magical museum is the city of Athens. Even if you have no time to spend in an official museum, you can smell the history in every street of this city. Ancient walls and big stones, where a great philosopher may standed one day, streets that have been walked by warriors or famous politicians, such as Periklis or Eleftherios Venizelos. Try to understand that Athenian history didn’t end with the ancient Greeks. The continuation is even more fascinating: Romans, Byzantine Empire and of course modern greek history. In addition, during all those years many artists lived and created in Athens, such as famous architects, poets and musicians. Can you discover their masterpieces spread all over the city? Can you recognize some statues? Are you familiar with names such as Kostis Palamas, Alekos Fasianos, Dimitris Fotiadis, Melina Merkouri? Can you see the signs that lead to the most strategic points of Athens? Religion has played an important role in the evolution of our history. Beautiful Christian orthodox churches are located everywhere and they are so different from the catholic ones, which also exist in Athens but they aren’t so many. What about mosques? Our city is the only European capital in which there aren’t official mosques and the ones in function are… illegal and/or unofficial. Regarding the modern, political and social history of Athens, this can be read on the walls. Mottos and graffiti show the difficult economic situation of our country or shout for freedom, equality and love. History in Athens, and to be honest in every city as vivid as the capital of Greece, is written every day!

4, Korai St. MEMORIAL SITE 1941-1944 The building which is placed at 4, Korai St. was built in 1938 by Ethniki Insurance Company. Immediately after the invasion of German troops in Athens, in 1941, it was commanded by the German administration. The basements of the building were used during the German occupation as the Kommandatur detention facility. In the detention chambers, a large number of spike scriptures and inscriptions of people who passed through these spaces in the period 1941-1944 are preserved, and through their “narrations”, they have bequeathed an important part of modern history of Greece to the next generations. The “Memorial Site 1941-1944” functions as a Monument open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday, during the hours: 9:00-14:00. It is closed in August.

The “Memorial Site 1941-1944” and the Art Space “STOart KORAI” at 4, Korai St., operate within the framework of the Corporate Social Responsibility of Ethniki Insurance Company, the largest and the longer-lasting insurance company in Greece. These areas reflect company’s beliefs in the values of art and culture.

INTERESTING MUSEUMS! In Athens, you won’t miss two things: food and history. Both of them are everywhere! Both of them are precious, but not expensive! The numerous museums, in almost every corner of this city, prove that, if you love expanding your knowledge while vacationing, you are in the right place! Except for the museums already known to you, such as the one of Acropolis, there are many others that can really surprise you! Nowadays, the philosophy of museums in the whole world, and for sure in the Greek capital city, has changed: they are more interactive, thanks to new technologies. Some of them have free entrance for some days of the month or of the week. Stay informed about the special exhibitions of your favourite museums and give a chance to places that even Greeks don’t know very well: These little spaces reveal interesting stories about the greek society, gastronomy, education, as well as everything else you can imagine. Don’t forget that Greek history goes really deep and far into the centuries, while Greek people have been mixed throughout the years with different and numerous populations of other countries and cultures. The beauty of our country and, of course, of our colourful capital hides in the fact that we are a spicy and at the same time unique mixture of elements that can be found almost all over the world! Get to know us better; there are a lot of ways! One of them, maybe one of the best ways, is a walk to what is dramatically changing day by day. Plan to visit the places you want, but also relax and enjoy what your own spontaneous steps in the city will reveal to your eyes! Surprises of knowledge and discovery will be waiting for you…

SIGNS OF THE GERMAN OCCUPATION IN ATHENS (WORLD WAR II) Athens and its inhabitants lived under German occupation from 1941 to 1944. The material signs of this occupation appear in various parts of the city. And even if there are no tangible ones, the memories are preserved and excavated every October (October 28th when Greece entered the war).

MEMORIAL SITE 1941-1944 / 4, ST. KORAI (KOMMANDATUR DETENTION CENTRES DURING THE GERMAN OCCUPATION)

In August 1894, the newly-founded “ETHNIKI” General Insurance Company purchases the Rossels mansion at 4 Korai Street in order to house its head offices there. Following its establishment at Korai 4, Ethniki Insurance was making preparations to celebrate its 50th anniversary since foundation, in 1941. Shortly after war was declared, the Ministers of Interior, Press and Tourism, leased per force a large part of the new building. On 27 April 1941, the German occupation troops entered Athens and, a few days later, requisitioned the building of Korai Street and its entire furnishings. The requisition order had to be obeyed within a day. The building now housed various agencies of the German occupation troops and the Kommandatur. On the top, there was the waving swastika flag whereas the underground bomb shelters were converted into prisons. The detention centres served mainly as transfer centres. Detainees

The Special State Security Directorate (also known as Special Security or simply "The Special") was a special unit of the Greek Gendarmerie created in 1929 to persecute communist organizations and arrest communists throughout Greece. During the German occupation, this unit cooperated directly with the occupying forces. During the Occupation 1941-44 the Special Security, working closely with the Germans, was the strike line against the resistance. The "responsibilities" of the Special Security were upgraded, so the extensions to branches, behind the main building of the 3rd of September, on Elpidos Street 3 (Hotel Krystal). ROCK OF ACROPOLIS

The rock of the Acropolis has "seen" images from almost all the historical moments of the city. So it was with the German Occupation. It was May 1941. Manolis Glezos and Apostolis Santas, both students of the Athens University of Economics and Business, were looking at the Holy Rock of the Acropolis and were saddened to see the flag of the conqueror waving. Then the daring plan came to mind. In the National Library they found everything related to the Holy Rock, the caves and the paths of the area. They set up their plan and on the night of May 30, Glezos and Santas decided to act: They jumped the wires, crawled to the cave of Pandrosios Andros and climbed the scaffolding of the archaeologists. The guards did not notice them. With quick movements they removed the symbol of Nazism from the web. The two young men took the flag with them and walked away from the same route. The Athenians who woke up early that day looked towards the Acropolis and saw only the Greek flag waving!

SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

SEAWOLF For lovers of tasty fish, Athens has its own place where creativity and imagination are combined with the seasonality and freshness of the ingredients. Elias Balaskas and Anestis Gabesis attach great importance to the quality of the raw material and cook everyday according to the fresh products they find in the organic flea markets creating imaginative proposals based on fish and seafood. Hospitable atmosphere, urban aesthetics and love for good food; these are the three elements that compose this ideal choice. / / / /

JOHN CRAXTON: AN UNCONVENTIONAL PAINTER WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH GREEK MENTALITY He was born on October 3, 1922, in St. John's, London. He lived through World War II and at the end of it, he didn’t want to live anymore in the dark and suffocating England. He started traveling at a very young age, until on one of his travels he discovered Greece, where he found what he lacked from his homeland: light, clear sky, kind-hearted people, wild landscape. He lived in Poros, where he had the chance to meet the poet George Seferis; He lived in Hydra too, at the house of the great painter Nikos Hatzikyriakos-Gikas and finally, he bought his own house in Chania in 1963. Craxton fell madly in love with Crete, its wild landscape and its history, the vast sea horizon, the passion and stubbornness of the Cretans. He adopted the traditional clothes, the mediterranean diet; he was drinking raki and wine, he was eating with friends and locals. He spent many hours in cafes and taverns talking - in fluent Greek with a pinch of Cretan dialect - and always in his hands a drawing block so that he could paint at any time these scenes of the daily life of the island: the dishes, the tables, the musicians, the dances. The beautiful paradox about Craxton's choices is that, while his natural surroundings were luxurious lounges, galleries, intellectuals, famous painters, he felt at home when he was surrounded by the ordinary people of daily toil. He was a free spirit who believed in friendship and in contiguity. He had unlimited appreciation for the people he met. He stated that "the most wonderful sound in the world is people talking over a good meal". Before he discovered Greece, Craxton's role models were Pablo Picasso and Juan Miró, but next to Hadjikyriakos-Gikas discovered that the hard, stony and indomitable Greek landscape with its sharp lines and volumes could give cubism a new perspective. Craxton never stopped painting. Until the end, he believed that his life in Greece was the highest form of art and that the happiness he experienced in a unique way in Greece and especially in Crete, was what gave him all the strength he needed as an artist. It was the experience that defined his whole life. The last time he visited Chania was in 2006. He died in London in 2009, at the age of 87, while he was planning to return to Chania to find his friends again and sit with them at a table overlooking the sea and the blue sky.

*You can visit the exhibition about “Joh Craxton: The Greek Soul” in Benaki Museum (138 Pireos & Andronikou St., 118 54 Athens) till 11/09/22.

UNDER THE ACROPOLIS Monastiraki, Plaka and Koukaki are Acropolis’ best friends. From special points of those neighborhoods you can see the famous Athenian hill with Parthenon, shining like a rare stone in the night. But, the value of those blocks is not only relevant to the historical monument. Quality, smiley faces and a variety of choices have led those spots in the city to be the most famous not only for tourists and visitors, but also for Greeks and Athenians. People who come to shop, to drink coffee or to eat the best souvlaki in Athens are exactly in front of your eyes. Ice cream and frozen yogurt shops, as well as fresh juice points, are always in fashion and offer a great break for the “hard walkers” of the city.

MONASTIRAKI FOR EVER!

Monastiraki means in Greek “little church” and is worldwide known for its flea market. It is a major tourist attraction in Athens for bargain shopping. Enjoy the African parties in the square with their traditional instruments giving a rhythm in everyone’s steps. Enjoy, as well, the surprises! History is written here in every corner. Keep your eyes open, because this very history is more interesting than its museum edition.

PLAKA, THE QUEEN OF ATHENS

Stairs, cats, old, greek-style cafes, the best selfies ever and, above all, this light from the sky which fits so much with the white houses. Plaka has always been synonymous with Athens by itself. Walk around the shops and tavernas, smell the pink and red flowers from the yards of the old Athenians who still live there and feel like you are in any greek island. Oh, this is happiness.

KOUKAKI, THE SUPER STAR…

Creative, youthful and hippie Koukaki captures, and not without reason, the attention of all. Bars and restaurant masterpieces, small galleries and streets to walk like a hero of a romantic greek movie. Modern, but still traditional, this aristocratically minimal neighborhood of Athens is maybe the reason why you could fall in love with this city.

Tips for Acropolis lovers If you are walking from Plaka, near the end of Adrianou street you will come to a small square, every inch of which has been taken over by fancy tourist restaurants and cafes. Hurry through it until you come face to face with Hadrian’s wall. You can’t miss it.

Don’t lose the chance to see the famous Tower of the Winds in Plaka. This monument is located only a block up from Adrianou, on Aiolou street and it is a part of the ancient Roman Agora. It was believed to be a place of great magic, but, in fact, it was a meteorological station from the first century, built by the Syrian Astronomer Andronikos Kyrrhestes.

In Koukaki, do not miss the chance to walk through Tsami Karatasou Street and admire the neoclassical mansions. One will surely stand out from the rest; it is the home of artist Margarita Theodorakis, daughter of Zorba the Greek composer, Mikis Theodorakis.

The whole process can be described as an experience since you will learn to walk and move with the steps the locals do it and you will notice details that you will hardly find in a tourist guide. The real Athens is here and is waiting for you to experience it! To book your place on the city streets visit their website.

THE REAL CENTER OF ATHENS The most beautiful thing when you visit a foreign country is that you come in touch with an entire culture - historical, linguistic, architectural, everything that composes an experience of meeting, acquaintance and contact. Of course, it is not the easiest thing in the world to visit a country and manage to live as a local. We know this and that is why you are holding this magazine in your hands. And for all the reasons above, we will introduce you the real center of Athens in the following pages. The center of Athens is not a place for the Athenians, it is something like an... idea. While formally, Omonia, Monastiraki, Syntagma, Thissio, Exarchia are considered as the center, for the Athenians the center includes also Kerameikos, Psyrri, Pagrati, Mets, Ilisia, Kypseli, Gyzi and a bunch of large or smaller neighborhoods. Each of them has its own color and character. However, they are a part of what composes the idea of the center of Athens. Common elements you will observe; narrow streets and small sidewalks, bitter-orange trees, small and large squares, narrow balconies with many pots, intense nightlife, bars that have become the hangouts of even of those who live in the suburbs, cars and motorbikes, groups, couples, the elderly. Real life in the center of Athens is filled with images that compose what we call "our place". Images of anxiety, images of carelessness, images of joy and sorrow are mixed between old and new apartment buildings, with the Athenian color as a background; this brick-red color that is visible even in works of art. In short, here we bring you real life images. Listen, observe, give time and importance to what is of value to us, the locals. Our history and archeological sites are, indeed, one of the most valuable sights in Europe. But real life cannot slip like the light from the cracks of the windows.

DANCING IN THE STREETS Off course it’s easy to watch a show in Monastiraki Square. Because, especially during summer, all kinds of groups are dancing in front of the metro station. Another hot-spot that you could find groups of people dancing is on the pedestrian street that connects Thissio and Gazi. While in Monastiraki rap and hip hop are the first choice, on this road you could watch tango or swing shows and join them.

STREET MUSICIANS Here, we do not miss the opportunity for fun. In addition, artists in this country –which has a long tradition in art though– suffer financially as they do not have support from the state, especially after the coronavirus crisis. The musicians found a way to make the city a stage and to match their musical notes. In every corner of the center, you will see a group playing music. Ermou, Thiseio, Monastiraki are the hotspots. Greek and foreign music is waiting for you to discover it on the streets of Athens. And if you want to give something to contribute, there is no price. Whatever you feel to support.

STREET VENDORS IN THISSIO In this corner of Athens, you can find a lot of benches with things. You go down Andrianou Street and walk towards Thiseio with the train lines on your left. Then, you go out to Agion Asomaton Street, which then it is called Apostolou Pavlou. Many street vendors are gathered on this neighborhood. Jewelry, decorations, handmade creations, works of art and various souvenirs from Greece are waiting for you to discover them.

SKATERS Yes, we have the skate madness here too. So, in many squares (because we do not have many specially designed spaces) you will see teenagers and young people doing their favorite sport. Recently, foot skates have also become fashionable. We reach our destination more easily.

Always using seasonal raw materials from every region of Greece, Svoura offers a great variety of high quality tastes in dishes that are prepared to be enjoyed as "mezze" (greek word for shared dishes). Also, don't forget to ask about the daily dishes. We suggest fried "gigantes" beans and garlic dip with tomato and samphire. EVZONES: CHANGE OF GUARD AT THE GREEK TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER On the upper side of Syntagma Square, the custom of changing the guard of the Evzoni, who wear the traditional uniform, still prevails. The Evzones or Evzonoi (Greek: Εύζωνες, Εύζωνοι, pronounced [evzones, evzoni]) were several historical elite light infantry and mountain units of the Greek Army, also known as Tsoliades (Greek: Τσολιάς; pl. Τσολιάδες, Tsoliádes). Through the historical action of the Evzoni battalions, the Evzoni are symbols of bravery for the Greek people. Today they perform more symbolic missions like this one. In addition, every Sunday the official raising and submission of the Greek flag takes place on the Holy Rock of the Acropolis and is performed by the Evzoni. In any case, the change of guard for the Athenians is a common sight, but it always attracts attention. In addition, it is useful to know the time without looking at a clock, since the change of guard takes place at exactly every hour.

ANTIQUE SHOPS IN MONASTIRAKI AND AVISSINIAS SQUARE

It is a habit for Athenians to walk among the second-hand shops in Monastiraki. In this place you can discover the most incredible things. Especially if you are a collector, here is your paradise. A journey through time in a neighborhood that keeps alive the color of old Athens.

JOGGING IN KIPSELI Although one of the most densely populated areas, the neighborhood of Kypseli is full of pets and people who are jogging! Pedion Areos is suitable for this, where people train even for the Marathon. However, you will also see runners among the narrow streets on a daily basis.

THE CROWD IN PAGRATI Pagrati is also a densely populated neighborhood but also one of the favorites of the Athenians. With endless entertainment options, in Pagrati the classic image is the one of many people to walk either for work or to go out at night. Therefore, you will often see people standing even outside the bar.

THE SQUARES IN THE REAL CENTER In Greek, the word for squares is “plateia” [platia]. Plateia denotes a wide part, the wideness, the openness. This is how we, Athenians, see through the squares. In this city, you will find all kinds of squares. Small, large, triangular, round or square. There are the big ones (Syntagma, Omonia, Klafthmonos) which have been connected with historical events and big changes in the development of the country and the city. The small ones that can have different sizes and are usually the trademark of a neighborhood (Kypseli, Monastiraki, Agia Irini) or can be just a small space in an anarchic shape that beautifies the openings between the cements. Usually, an entire daily life is formed around the squares. Metro and bus stations, cafes, restaurants, taverns, souvlaki restaurants, bars, schools for artists. And everything has as its center the “plateia”, which is the perfect setting either for work or for amusement.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR IN THE REAL CENTER: TRAPS AND SCAMS As in any capital, so in Athens, many aspects coexist. The bright and social, but also the dark and dangerous. Below you will find some things to watch out for if you find yourself in similar situations, directly from us locals.

1. PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Although we have better reputation than other cities, this does not mean that you will not meet thieves in subway trains or stops. So, take care of your belongings, do not leave things in the back pockets of the bag or in the pockets of your clothes and if you notice something strange, inform the security staff that exists at each station. In addition, many beggars enter the subway. Maybe some really need it, others don't. They are usually not dangerous, so if you want to help it is at your discretion.

& THE PEOPLE

PEOPLE AND STATUES GUIDE US TO ATHENS Who can give us information about a city? Definitely the people who live in it. Those who move, work, walk, think, act having Athens as a background, are suitable to convey experiences, images and emotions. They are the ones who give life and movement to the city. However, there are some other elements in Athens. Elements that have human shape, but stand lifeless and monumental. Marble or bronze, small and large, in overt places or in hidden ones, the statues of a city could say a lot, even if they have no speech. Talking statues and people give their own versions and stories about Athens; the city where they stand, live and see through their eyes –even if these eyes are real or pure white.

MICHALIS FROUSKLIAS

AN UNEXPECTED RIDE On a hot day of May, although it was only 10 in the morning, I went down to Piraeus to do some chores, riding my yellow Vespa due to the 24-hour means of transport strike. When I finally got rid of the chores, there was a crazy mess on the streets. Horns, voices, people everywhere... At some point, as I caught the right side of the road and I was taking my time, a young girl with a bouquet of colorful flowers was standing on the pavement and hitchhiked me. Comfortable and bold, as if she was on a Cycladic island! "Good morning! A friend of mine has his graduation at the Polytechnic School and I have half an hour to be there, could you give me a ride?”, she told me. “Of course!” I replied and like a yellow two-wheeled taxi, our Athenian ride-adventure began! Going up Piraeus street, we passed by the School of Fine Arts and in the background we glanced at the Acropolis. On the windows of the shops we could see the reflections of the yellow Vespa, the colorful flowers and her white summer dress. The last scene of Kiarostami's movie “Close-up” came to my mind, with a completely different scenario of course! The atmosphere was musky from the blooming sour orange trees and the flowers from the bouquet that was by my nose, all tangled up with the smells of the industrial exhausts of the fierce Greek drivers. In the end, we made it! We wished each other a good summer and a beautiful day. Before she left, she put a lively

In fact, it is used in the homeric poem, Iliad, to characterise the person who fights in the first line, but also as a main name: Promachos was a warrior who took part in Trojan war and was killed with a spear.

In the precinct of the Academy of Athens, based on a column of Ionian order at a height of 10 metres, we find the goddess Athena. Fully armed, as if she’s ready for battle, she holds her spear and shield raised. The model of this statue was the feudal Athena, a colossal sculpture placed in Acropolis, that was visible even by the ships, which were sailing offshore Sounion. On the left side of Athena Promachos, two 19th-century neoclassical mansions: the University of Athens and the National Library. Imposing and haughty, «dressed in» her waving marble tunic, she has been overlooking the Korai square, the Klafthmonos square, lots of passers-by, buses, stallholders, pigeons, and all the seasons passing by, in one of the most beautiful streets of the historical city-centre, the one of Panepistimiou Street. She has been hearing chatter for years and she knows all the secrets of the Athenians; but she reveals nothing. Maybe she shares some of them with her friend, Apollo the Guitarist, who’s standing next to her at about the same height. Rumour has it, you can hear whispers and a little lyre tune late at night, when the atmosphere is cleaned from noises and rush drivers’ horns

art critic & artistic director

Occupation:

MARIA MARAGOU Art chose me from a very young age. I couldn’t draw a line, but I was dazzled by the works of art and I could distinguish the good from the mediocrity using the instinct that follows me until today, in my opinion. My studies gave me the keys to think about what is art. I design exhibitions whose theme I’m interested in and I choose the works of art that I fall in love with.

ATHENS: LOVE AND TRAUMA Favourite walks during the quarantine due to covid-19, the beauty of the Lycabettus paths, the Roman Agora, Anafiotika neighbourhood, leisurely enjoyed without passersby. Athens without its hustle and bustle. The different sense of time, the thread of history and the cracks, social, economic, ideological, the manipulations of art in the global market condition, and us, in the first decades of the 21st century, following the ancient paths, listening to the whispers of the past. Modern streets with names dating back to antiquity, leading to the same destination as 25 centuries ago. Panathenaion Street, Tripodon Street, Leokoriou Street, Dipylou Street, Eidyllia Street. A passage to Piraeus, Elefsina, to the city’s outskirts, through the Hiera Pyle (Sacred Gate) or the Hierá Hodós (Sacred Way). Here, citizens and slaves carrying things walk and talk, mingling with animals and carts loaded with foods and clothing, trading goods stored in the ports waiting to be shipped. It was through these thoughts during my walks, I came up with the idea for an art exhibition entitled “Eidyllia”. “Eidyllia Odos” is built, once again, in utopia. Artists and works that can speak about the present of our past, without nostalgia, by manipulating the things they use as raw material. Things that have always existed and can be used in other ways for different needs. Soil, wool, thatch, fabrics, marble, straw, threads and needles, looms. “Eidyllia Odos” touches upon or at least wishes to touch upon a piece of history, people, and the past through time, irreplaceable material of history and memory. The city of Athens as a landmark and its long history are linked to a plethora of applied raw materials.

The exhibition “Eidyllia Odos” will be at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete from 14.5 to 30.10.22

EROS TOXOTHRAFSTIS Toxothrafstis: Compound word meaning “bow” and “break”. The one who breaks his own bow. The god Eros has been depicted countless times in art in many different forms. There are different versions of his birth: son of Aphrodite and Mars or son of Aphrodite and Uranus or without parents as a result of Chaos and Gaia or Night and Erebus.

Zappeion Megaron Garden Vasilissis Olgas Avenue 1, Athens

Sculptor:

George Vroutis (1843-1909)

“I AM MAGICAL AND THAT IS WHY YOU WILL NEVER INTERPRET ME” He stands alone in the flowery Zappeion. A winged fragment of love. Away from the other statues in the garden - which are admittedly numerous - Eros makes you wonder if he is alone by choice or if the other sculptures refuse his company. He doesn’t seem to care too much about his loneliness; he doesn’t care about passers-by and he is devoted to his work: to break his bow forever. A project that is doomed to remain unfinished. With stubbornness he destroys his own weapon; the weapon that was once responsible for the love between two people, since the legend says that the two people who were hit by Eros’ arrow fell in love instantly. According to Sophocles, love, Eros, is invincible. But here, do we see him in a moment of defeat? Has love been lost in modern times and is this the moment of his resignation from the earthly stuff? Is it the moment of absolute self-knowledge where he realizes the evil that he often causes and the troubles in which he puts his lovers? Is it just self-referential and reminds us of its often self-destructive dimension? Or, finally, it is a warning to the world: look what will happen if I break it and disappear! Either way, a lifelong picture of disaster can be for the better or for the worse. Depending on the angle from which you look at the sculpture!

Here, you can feel that you are in the heart of the facts. Moving in Patision Street, I wait for the traffic light to cross the street and the beauty comes to find me as my gaze is magnetised by the Parthenon. Next stop at Varvakios. The largest market in the centre of Athens. Fishermen, butchers and small sellers serve hundreds of people with a smile. In the afternoon, the people working in the market drink iced beers as they pick up their merchandise. Next stop Dimofontos street, a road leading to the enchanting neighbourhood of Petralona. On your way, you can see houses with courtyards full of fragrant flowers that remind of a village. You can also see children playing ball in the street or in the fields overlooking the port of Piraeus. After that, a refreshing drink at the friendly bars of the centre is required. KOSTIS PALAMAS A POINT OF SILENCE IN THE BUSTLING CITY. The poet in a meditative attitude invites you to

Kostis Palamas was a poet, novelist, playwright, historian and literary critic. He is considered one of the most important Greek poets with a significant contribution to the development and renewal of modern Greek poetry, but also of the Greek language in general.

er, a few yards from his now-demolished home, it is as if he stepped out onto the city balcony and stayed there forever; deep, inward, thoughtful and at the same time gentle; like another Rodin’s "Thinker". He looks like an image from a historical, melancholic and philosophical photo album. An image that, as much as it contradicts the frenetic rhythms of the big city, brings it closer to the feeling of loneliness of the man who tries to give time and place to himself in the crowd. Kostis Palamas continues to speak to us in various ways, through his writings and his marble depiction. We will never know what he might think. THE BLUE LADY. Mrs. Christin Roussi, Painter. Today, a while ago, under the trees and the straw umbrellas in the center of Athens... Yes, as unbelievable as it sounds... on Alexandras Avenue, at Panathenaea... I think that the park is called Argentina Square… We were a good group of friends… We were enjoying our juices, our coffees, our toasts... Around us there was the known world of our neighborhood... and suddenly our eyes lit up! A colorful lady appeared and sat next to us... her blue hair was in harmony with her lovely printed dress. Paintings on her legs and arms seemed like disposable tattoos with small well-designed patterns... She was eccentric without flagrancy, she was aristocratic, artistic, special… My eyes couldn’t snap out of her. Sometime, while we were leaving, I found the courage to talk to her and ask if I could have a photo with her. "But we are friends on Facebook, Mr.Papadimitriou", she told me, before I even had the time to introduce myself to her. A man is known by the company he keeps, I thought.

Musician, cinema, theater and television composer, but also playwright with studies in music and biology in Athens and Paris. Victoria & Alcazar in Diligianni street, Optasia in Psaron street and in the middle of them Finos Film in Chios street. The biggest film producing company was located between two summer cinemas and one winter cinema, in the Athenian center above the Larissa station. Childhood was full of cinema, football and of course a lot of music at the National Conservatory in Vathi Square. However, I had already touched the magic piano keys of Finos, when I first met my beloved George Chatzinassios. As I wander around my neighborhood, thinking

into Diligianni street, listening to the trains and wondering about every beauty I have experienced here. I refuse to accept that everything is well done. I approached "little Zappeion", as it was once called, the park opposite the police station and felt everything around me shouting: “Bring here Manolis Coupe to start Penanque in Greece”. So it happened in the "little Paris of Athens 2014" and we renamed the park to parc petanque. The view of the now closed Peloponnese station dominated. In 2016 and in 2017 the Peloponnese station hosted a large gallery and other activities for the festival.

A DISAPPOINTED LIEUTENANT GENERAL According to the rules of international sculptural language, when a sculpture depicts a man (usually a warrior) on a horse, the posture of the horse's legs reveals the manner in which the rider died. Specifically, when both front legs are in the air it means that the horseman was killed in battle. When one foot is in the air and the other is on the ground it means that he died later but from injuries sustained in battle. When

KOLOKOTRONIS Although Gordon’s activity in the Greek Revolution was short, he was the first English philhellene to join the Greek forces. He chartered and equipped at his own expense a ship in Marseilles, with which he transported fighters to Greece.

all four feet are on the ground it means that he died of natural causes. In the case of the sculpture of Theodoros Kolokotronis, one front leg of the horse and one back leg do not step on the ground. This should mean that the rider died in time after the battle, but due to battle wounds. However, this does not correspond to reality as it is known that Kolokotronis died many years later. He died of a stroke, two days after his son's wedding and after a big dance he attended at the palace. So all four horses' feet should be on the ground. The reason why the creator of the sculpture did not follow the rules is probably because he was not so much interested in showing how the general died, but to be able to

I want to study biology and do something that combines animals and nature. I want to travel around the world with my dog and write about my experiences.

As a child of the Athenian city center, my week begins by taking the bus to school, while it ends with my beloved friends in Kallimarmaro at the weekend. Unfortunately, here in Athens, we don’t wake up hearing the birds singing, but the alarm clock and mom's voice "Wake up honey, you will miss the bus again!". Then, I go to school and come back home by bus. I don’t complain, it’s pretty good. But I prefer moving by the railway, gazing at all the graffiti, which makes the city dirty, as a lot of people say. Gazing across the road and listening to music. I want, one day, to get in a wagon, put on my

THE CHILD WITH GRAPES According to Greek mythology, Stafylos was the son of the god Dionysus and Ariadne. In another legend, Staphylos was a shepherd of the king of Aetolia, Oeneas. As he was grazing his goats, he noticed that one of them, eating a certain fruit constantly, became fatter than the others. He then gathered several and offered them to his king. He made a juice which he called “oinos” (wine), and gave the fruit the name of his shepherd (stafyli which means grape).

Syntagma Square

A MOMENT OF INNOCENT PLEASURE A moment of enjoyment set in the upper left corner of Syntagma Square; a young naked boy sitting on a basket full of grapes prepares to eat a bunch. The result of a teenage scandal or the enjoyment of the fruits of his labor? Be that as it may, such an image in the heart of the city catches the eye because it brings the forgotten nature into the urban reality and the childish carelessness into a world of anxious adults. The grape, since ancient times, is full of symbolism.

bunch of grapes. A little modern Dionysus here too, a naughty and eternal teenager, one could say? The grape; the fruit of the transition: with one foot in late summer and with the other in autumn. Syntagma Square also symbolizes a transition: it took its name from the Constitution granted by King Otto to the Greek people after the Revolution of September 3rd, 1843, when the transition from absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy took place. Within this city everything is connected. As long as you have the desire to observe and think in the case of this particular sculpture, as much as the table seats allow, unfortunately.

DISCOVOLOS With this sculpture, Konstantinos Dimitriadis won the gold medal in sculpture at the Olympic Games in 1924, in Paris. It is a study of the famous work "Discovolos" by the ancient sculptor Myron, which remains lost to this day. Konstantinos Demitriadis's Discovolos (means discus thrower) was cast in three copies: the first was given by the sculptor to a friend in New York (today it adorns Randall’s Island Park). The second copy is located outside the Dijon Stadium in France and the third, with which the sculptor completed his study, is located directly opposite the entrance of the Panathenaic Stadium.

purpose. Discovolos is imposing because the sculpture captures the movement and the instant at the same time. In the maze of big cities, where you have to decide everything quickly and with anxiety, man needs a moment of concentration before the big step or the big decision. A moment full of energy but also calm. A moment that spreads to the eternal and keeps its meaning intact. What should Discovo-

Let's make an imaginary line and think about where the record might have landed: In the Stadium? Even further back, in the straits of the beautiful Mets area? Or did the athlete regret it and never throw it?

AWESOME ATHENS EXPERIENCES

KALLIOPI & THOMAS Hello everyone! We are Kalliopi and Thomas, the couple behind Awesome Athens Experiences. Our main activity and goal is the promotion of the wider area of Athens and its suburbs through contemporary urban art and more specifically street art.

We grew up in the neighborhoods of Chalandri and Virona, but for the last 8 years we have been living in the center of Athens and more specifically in the neighborhood of Kerameikos. Athens is for us everything that is said and heard and even more; wonderful and contradictory. Ancient but also modern, gray but also colorful, chaotic and artistic, dirty, noisy but also so authentic and lively. We also have favorite places in town. If we chose a square this would be Avdi Square, an oasis of coolness five minutes away from Omonia. If we chose a place for coffee this would be the Myller Coffeeshop in Psyrri, a relaxed urban choice with wonderful coffees and tea, everything you need to make this would definitely be Votanikos, an area with so many “rakadika” (places that oofers the traditional raki) that you do not know where to start. Let's say “Rafiki” with the handmade “pastourmadopitakia” (little pies made of cured beef), the gnocchi and the jungle mural of Wild Drawing that decorates the space. As far as street art and murals are concerned, Athens has nothing to envy from any city in the world, with so many Greek and foreign artists painting on the city walls for years – with permission or not, it does not matter. Psyrri, Metaxourgio, Kerameikos and Gazi, Monastiraki, Exarchia but also a little further: Vyronas, Ilioupoli, Nikaia, Korydallos, Rentis, Piraeus, Keratsini. Whether it is large murals for the neighborhoods they decorate or smaller works of more spontaneous and personal conception, there are diamonds everywhere ready to be discovered.

THE LITTLE HARVESTER [Greek: mikros theristis] In Greek “theristis” means he who harvests. We usually call theristi the month of June, because it is the month when we harvest the fields with the crops. Also, “theros” in Greek means summer.

A SCULPTURE SHOUTING “IT’S SUMMER” A little naked boy. A little naked boy with his hat. A little naked boy with his hat and a bunch of cobs between his hands. June: the month of harvest. June the harvester, the reaper. June the little reaper. The month when at noon the sun fills the streets with combs. The harvester made of marble who could be called June. The one who may have just picked the ears of corn, now he reverently leans over them and holds them gently, tenderly, almost embracing them, as if he is holding children or another body. He takes care of them by carefully tying the rope around them. It is his efforts on which he bends. We should love our efforts - as children or as other bodies. That makes sense. They will help us in difficult times. If we take care of them, we take care of ourselves. Maybe the little reaper wants to tell us something about it: about the children of the city who have lost touch with nature and its work, about the modern people who have learned to do everything easily and quickly, who want to exclude the toil from their daily life, which they expel as if it were an annoying summer fly or a foreign body. With this alienation, however, the psychological fatigue becomes much greater.

“THE CITY IS AN EERIE PLACE, PROFOUNDLY DUAL-NATURED” I love roaming around the Unknown City. There is a dark Unknown City, behind the glittering Known City. The Unknown City lurks behind every nook and cranny of the Known City’s Consensus Reality. It prowls behind closed doors and closed mouths; it shimmers in old and yellowed newspaper and magazine clippings of bygone years; it lies in narrations, testimonies and memories touching the boundary of the legend. The Unknown City is a pastiche of strange stories and amazing facts that cover the whole gamut –from the dreamy to the nightmarish. Semiotic ghosts creep around in dark alleys and closed apartments. I study the innumerable metallic lids with occult symbols that cover the pavements of the Known City. I search for strange stories regarding poltergeists. I visit old, derelict haunted houses that still stand in some neighborhoods. I investigate stories of strange crimes and macabre events. I unearth tales of phantom hitchhikers, eerie apparitions, uncanny accidents and synchronicity clusters. I compile the maps that can be used for the exploration of the network of Tunnels beneath the Known City. I am a wandering urbano-

A MELEE COMBAT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR 85 YEARS IN VICTORIA SQUARE

Victoria Square

It is located between the historic 3rd Septemvriou Street and Aristotelous, the sky above and the subway lines that connect underground squares, statues, neighborhoods and people. A wonderful moment of battle that, no matter how hard we try to represent today, we will fail miserably; even though such battles take place every day in our cities and often surpass art in dynamics. In a neighborhood whose physiognomy has changed a lot in recent years, such a sculpture forces you to think modern big city? And finally who are we with? With the prince who wants to save the beautiful Hippodameia for reasons of honor and bravery defending his king friend - or with the ambiguous creature who also claims his place in the world? With some violence, yes, but is his fight fair? The most permanent inhabitants of the square, the pigeons, also try to take a position by changing the balance of the sculpture visually and semantically; sometimes they stand by Theseus and sometimes by the Centaur. But we said, in life but also in art everything is a matter of perspective. After all, the creator never looks at his sculpture only from the front.

COEXISTING Almost five years later, I really have fond memories from my first days of leaving in Athens because I feel like I’ve always been there. It’s always on my mind like a chaotic place with many difficulties to deal with but at the same time a perfect one, that all of your dreams can come true. But the most unique feeling that this city always gives me is a bittersweet nostalgia about things and facts that are related with it, that I’ve never experienced. It makes me feel part of its history. There are plenty of different things in Athens that are coexisting in a strange, but very attractive, way. Like its own past, present and future at the same time. And I feel always free to choose my timeline!

In particular, the birth of new ideas, their implementation and the result printed on paper. I do not know if it is accidental, but 80% of the people who work and produce “The city lives” and “Free Athens” are women! We present them to you (3 are missing!) and thank them for their hard work! SAPPHO Sappho (also called “Sappho the Lesbian” from her place of origin) (~ 630 BC - 570 BC), was the most important lyric poet of antiquity, originating from Lesvos, especially known to this day for her poetic work. her name in modern times has been associated with lesbian love.

A LYRICAL REMINDER In times when the romantism and inspira-

tion of everyday life, Sappho’s sculpture looks like a lyrical reminder. Seemingly calm, but the movement resulting from the raised big toe and ending in her right hand creates a complex dynamism. Bent over her lyre - as if she is trying to feel it. The folds of her dress pulsate with her restless spirit - along with the strings of her lyre. Her muscular, strong and determined hands may comment on the great conversation that has arisen about her sexuality. If sculpture could take life for a while, what notes and lyrics would it give us? Would it be full of spontaneity, passion and strong emotions as her poems used to be in antiquity? Or will it have been drowned out by the exhaust gas and the tall buildings that hide the sun? What could be worse for an artist than to end up as a brass sculpture, unable to move, express and fall in love? The optimistic thing is that she gave her name to an asteroid discovered in 1864: 80 Sappho. So we can imagine that she continues to write love poems from somewhere more atmospheric than the

GREEK MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS Bouzouki, klarinet, lyre, daouli, sandouri: these are just 5 of the traditional musical instruments that you must definitely discover on your vacation in Greece to get a taste of tradition and Greek way of entertainment.

pg 83

FREE ATHENS

In Greece there are some traditional musical instruments that have defined its traditional music. Their sound is typical and awakens emotions and memories in Greeks. At the revelries that are very often organized, it is these instruments that are in the orchestra. But you will also find them on the street; outdoor musicians use these instruments and many restaurants or taverns with live music are flooded with the sounds of these instruments. This is the predominant way of entertaining for Greeks. Fairs are also a traditional way of entertaining and gatherings where music is the key element of get-together. Rebetikο, songs by the refugees of Minor Asia, folk songs from mainland and islands are some of these traditional types of music that have their own musical instruments to create emotions and memories.

GREEK TRADITIONAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS BOUZOUKI

Stringed musical instrument. It is said that its origins are from the ancient Greek musical instrument "Pandoura". It became known during the Ottoman Empire by the Greeks of Asia Minor and flourished after the Asia Minor catastrophe (1922). It has been widely used in rebetiko and folk music. In fact, it became synonymous (“let's go to bouzoukia”) of the great popular stages which were at the zenith in Greece since the 80's until the first years of 2000.

CLARINET

Wind instrument. As a folk musical instrument it appeared in Greece in the first decades of the 19th century and is now one of the main instruments of Greek traditional music and specifically the folk songs which it revives. It is the instrument that dominates the open-air festivals and has been associated with the Roma. The clarinetist in an orchestra is often the first name and it is a requirement of the audience to play his solo. That is

LYRE

According to mythology, the first lyre was made by the god Hermes as a gift to the god Apollo. In modern Greece, the Cretan lyre is very widespread, the lyre in various islands of the Dodecanese and Northern Greece. The Greeks of Constantinople had the political lyre. The Greeks of Cappadocia played a lyre called kemane. Also for the Greeks of Pontus, the Pontian lyre (kementzes) is their pre-eminent folk musical instrument. The lyre is played with a fiddle stick.

when dance and souls catch fire.

DAOULI

The daouli is a drum; a percussion instrument of Greek folk music. It often accompanies the clarinet in folk festivals. It also participates in many customs, mainly in Northern Greece. The sound is produced by the two wooden rods that the organist taps on the membranes of the instrument. The sound produced on the right side is heavier and on the left side sharper. Originally the membranes were made of animal skins. Over the years many membranes are plastic as they are more durable, easy to use and do not need much care. Its sound gives rhythm and is uplifting.

SANDOURI (ZITHER)

The sandouri is a stringed percussion musical instrument. The companies of Asia Minor musicians who settled in Greece after the Asia Minor catastrophe played a decisive role in its establishment. It participates mainly in the traditional music of Asia Minor and the islanders of Greece. It is an extremely melodic instrument with an airy sound that travels you. Also, its sound is distinctive and easily recognizable.

THE OUTSKIRTS OF ATHENS Athens is not only the center, the suburbs, the neighborhoods and the streets between the low and high buildings. This city, in addition to a rich history and a plethora of different images, also has a special geographical uniformity. As a fortress, it is surrounded by mountains and sea that symbolically define the city limits. And of course, this natural environment offers many activities that bring you closer to the coolness you need iduring summer. Get a backpack and get started. Mountain or sea? Diving or walking?

UTIES: SEASIDE BEA F THE COAST O S T R A P E E THE THR

From Alimos to Vouliagmeni The closest to Athens coastal part. It has very good access from the center of Athens, as buses, metro and trams approach this part. With the seafront promenade offering easy access by car, this sea corner of Athens is full of locals and tourists. So you will find food options or overnight and party options. Be sure to see the part of “Bolivar Beach Bar”. Plus, do not forget to dive in the natural harbors of Vouliagmeni.

From Varkiza to Sounio Here, the natural landscape is as if you travel somewhere far from Athens. Fewer settlements (with that of Varkiza being the most popular and cosmopolitan) and more natural beauties with rocks, stones, caves and natural bays. A very beautiful excursion is to make your dives in Lagonisi, Anavyssos or Sounio and then go up to the temple of Poseidon. If you are lucky and the sky is clear, you will see at the bottom of the horizon the temple of Aphaia in Aegina.

From Lavrio to Rafina The part that clearly sees the Aegean Sea. After Sounio, not many kilometers away, you will find the settlement of Lavrio. Lavrio can be characterized as a place with high historical and monumental density (it is known since classical antiquity for the mining of silver, which was one of the main sources of income of the city-state of Athens, for the production of coins and the financing of the Athenian fleet. Part of the city has been characterized as a traditional settlement). It is worth visiting for the clear sea as well as for the monuments and ancient ruins. If you continue the road to the north, you end up in Rafina, the second main port of the city after Piraeus. In between, there are many beaches organized or not, while the view to the Aegean is endless.

Parnitha It is the highest mountain in Attica. Its highest point reaches 1,413 m. It is full of pines at its lowest points, of firs to the highest, but also many other species of plants and flowers. Animals such as deer, birds, wolves, hares live in this mountain of special natural beauty that has joined the Natura 2000 network. The flora and fauna of Parnitha is truly amazing. Most of the winter is covered with snow. Suitable for nature walks and oxygen breaths. Unfortunately, although it is one of the last lungs of natural life for Attica, in recent summers it burns repeatedly with dramatic costs for the inhabitants of the city.

Hymettus Its highest peak reaches 1,026 m. It is directly connected with the history of ancient Athens: according to the findings and historical sources, sanctuaries were established in the area of the mountain in antiquity. On the west side of the mountain there were marble quarries, which were used to build monuments in Hellenistic and Roman times. Hymettus has also suffered catastrophic fires, but still endures and displays rich vegetation and fauna. It is one of the most popular destinations for Athenians for contact with nature. It is also a protected Natura 2000 habitat.

the statues that we find in the city. This fact causes international skepticism about how the workers in the pre-Christ era managed to transport the massive marbles at a distance of 12 km from Athens. It seems that the descent of the marbles from the mountain was done by the Road Lithagogias (which means stone+move), which, as its name suggests, was used to facilitate the process, while their subsequent transport was probably with cranes. Much of the mountain's natural wealth was also lost by fires but also by reckless housing intervention.

THE MOST ANNOYING TYPES OF TOURISTS

oh, no! The selfie-ish This is the sticky type. Sticky in terms of auxiliary devices for commemorating the same smiling version of themselves in front of different backgrounds. Even when not armed with sticks, they are still dangerous. They perceive the world through the lens of a camera and their worst nightmare is running out of battery. They don’t live, they document the life around them. Unfortunately, most of the time they miss the most juicy details of real life, because they are slightly out of focus. Take care: these individuals rarely notice physical obstacles and moving objects, so be gentle and cautious. Lastly, don’t forget to photobomb their selfies at every chance. At least, that way they will have some real life snapshots on their pictures.

The pedant That’s the type of knowledgeable traveler you encounter in front of every long and obscure historical note in the museum. They have done their research and know how everything SHOULD work. If the timetable of the archeological sites is slightly different from what is written in the tour guide, they make a point out of demonstrating it to every single person in their immediate reach. If by chance they weren’t able to visit every single landmark on their five-page list, the whole trip wouldn’t worth it. These scholarly fellows are good for getting precious historic data, so shadow them while sightseeing and then just wander off to live some real-life experiences.

Ευχαριστώ [Efharisto]: Καλημέρα/Καλησπέρα/Καληνύχτα [Kalimera/Kalispera/Kalinihta]:

Means “thank you”. As social butterflies, we are polite too. And the answer is “Parakalo”, which means something like “you are welcome”.

These words mean good morning, good evening and good night. In Greece, we are social butterflies so, we greet everyone. But, we have a different style of greeting. We say “good morning” all day –depends on when we are up!–, we say good evening after noon, when we arrive somewhere or on the phone and “good night” when we leave a place or a person, it is night and we go for sleep!

Μια μπίρα, παρακαλώ! [Mia bira, parakalo]: Πόσο κάνει; [Poso kani?]:

This phrase is the most useful for the summer. It means “One beer, please” and is the only phrase you need to know! If you want water, just say “Ena

an insult. It is accompanied by a gesture; a gesture with one or two hands together where the inside of the palm is shown to someone with all the fingers open, outstretched and at a distance from each other. This gesture is called “moutza” and it is a habit among Greeks.

We are sure you know this word but we have to explain; it is not always an insult. In our slang language, this word could be used among

Αράζω [Arazo]:

friends – men and women. However, the literal meaning is the one who masturbates.

A verb that means “relax” or “rest”. We use this verb when we stay for a long time in a cafe or in a restaurant. But also, this verb

Ένα τσιγάρο δρόμος [Ena tsigaro dromos]:

is used in other contexts too. For example, if someone is angry, you could just say “Araxe”!

A phrase that actually means “the distance is as long as a cigarette lasts”. We often use this phrase because we smoke a lot. Another phrase that could show that the distance is small is the “PagratiKoliatsou”, a phrase that its origins comes from the trolley-bus line 11, which used to connect the Athenian neighborhoods of Pagrati and Koliatsou in a few minutes.

Καβλαντίζω [kavlantizo] A new phrase for flirting. A verb that can be used when we flirt, but nothing serious; just small talk that could end up to hot nights! To be accurate, “kavla”, the noun that became a verb, means “sexual excitement”.

Ρε [Re]:

It's like an exclamation point that fits in every context. “Re malaka”, “Re, let me tell you this” etc. It is common among friends otherwise it indicates rudeness.

VINTAGE SHOPPING IN ATHENS Second-hand shopping can be your first choice when you visit Athens, as it has become a really popular activity during the recent years. Even if you aren’t into the vintage look, you can find a large variety of gently-used, brand-name items in the second-hand stores or thrift shops, as they are usually called. Although vintage shopping isn’t as common among the Greeks, as in other european cities, more and more greek people, and especially the younger ones, are embracing thrift shopping, as it isn’t only affordable, but also it’s a trendy and more environmentally friendly activity. In the city of Athens you can find original fashionable pieces, coming from the largest European cities of fashion. It’s a truth that nowadays you can find in vintage shops pieces that last during the times and can be worn by one generation to another. Stroll in the city centre and discover valuable pieces like jeans, accessories and bags. You can easily spot the vintage shops by their cute, well-dressed storefronts and their fine aesthetics!

HIDE AND SEEK IN ATHENS There are some neighbourhoods, so close to the city centre of Athens, but also not so well-known as the rest of the athenian neighbourhoods. Take the chance to play hide-and-seek in the “hidden” regions of Athens and give a try to the places below, if you want to experience a more local taste of the capital of Greece. Squeezed between the chaotic Syngrou Avenue and the hills of the Acropolis, Koukaki is one of the city’s most exciting neighbourhoods. Somewhere among the countless brunch restaurants and alternative bars, you will catch a glimpse of the authentic Athenian experience in an area that incorporates old times with modernity. Petralona is yet another one of those charming places that are mostly unaffected by tourism. The communal atmosphere that permeates Petralona attracts all sorts of creative types -from digital nomads to artists- who are quickly turning the neighbourhood into one of the coolest places to be in Athens. Near the centre of the city, Pangrati has a host of trendy shops, cool architecture, cafes, restaurants and interesting art galleries. It is a good place to get the local vibe and enjoy a few hours of relaxing roaming.
