Hang Curtains With Ease

Q: The windows in my new apartment have curtain brackets installed on either side of all the windows, but they are either warped or broken. I’m not very confident that I can put up new brackets. Any tips? -- Sarah, via email A: Sure. Tip one: don’t be nervous about placing new brackets. Tip two: measure twice, cut (or drill) once.

Putting up outside-mounted curtains can seem difficult, but it’s a great home-improvement project for beginners that can boost confidence while making your apartment considerably more awesome.

You’ll need a few simple tools: a tape measure (one of the big locking ones is ideal) and a level (very inexpensive, but indispensible for getting the brackets set up in line). Buy a corded power drill, or borrow one from a friend, along with a set of drill bits. And keep one flat-head and one Phillips-head screwdriver on hand, too.

You’ll also need a small ladder or stepladder to work safely.

Measure the height that the curtains must reach. If you want floor-length curtains, measure from the floor to the top of the window molding (the wooden “frame” around the window opening). Add about 4-6 inches to that measurement to get the correct height of curtains you need. (Most ready-made curtains come in standard sizes, with 84 inches the norm for floor-length.)

Measure the width of the window from one side of the molding to the other.

Next, buy new brackets and curtain rods (and curtains, if you don’t have them already). The rods should be long enough to extend 3-6 inches past the window on each side. The brackets need to be tough enough to hold up heavy curtains (that’s part of the reason why your old brackets are partially torn out of the wall). You also may want to buy plastic wall anchors; bracket screws go through these to better hold the brackets in place.

Really long curtain rods often come with an additional bracket placed at the center of the rod to keep it from warping downward. Take the hint and install this center bracket if it’s included.

To set up the new brackets, measure and mark a point 6 inches above the window molding and another one 3-6 inches past the molding, on both sides of the window. Use the level to ensure that the points are in line with each other. Make sure the new brackets aren’t placed in the same spot as the old ones.

Place the new bracket so the top part touches the outer mark you just made. Use a pencil and mark the drill holes for the bracket. Do the same on the other side. Re-measure and level the two points. Then, pre-drill guide holes for the bracket, using a drill bit one size smaller than the bracket’s screws.

Hold the bracket in place over the pre-drilled holes, and place the screws, using the screwdriver to handtighten. If using a screw anchor, screw that into the wall first, then hold the bracket in place and thread the screw into the plastic anchor. (The anchor will pop open on the backside of the wallboard.)

Double-check the placement of the second bracket one last time, then screw it into the wall. If a center bracket is needed, add that as well.

Now, all that’s left is to put the curtains onto the rod, and lift the rod into place on the brackets. An easy task!

Hello All! Hope you are doing well!

So... the high hopes for an "after" picture of the garage cleaning project fell through this week. I did spend a couple evenings of quality time last week basically moving things around. You know how the mess seems to get bigger before you get a handle on it... I guess you'll have to settle for a "during" picture this week.

My wife, Lynette, and I talk a lot about the first "domino" that each project has.

The first domino is the one thing that leads to the next level of completion. For example, I have to move the stereo that is under the work bench in the garage. Now, of course, I can't just grab it and go... well not in my a garage anyway... so, in order to get to it I have to move the boxes of canning jars, but the canning jars need to go to the basement. The spot for the jars is currently occupied by several stacks of books that need to be put in boxes. The boxes I need to use have recycling in them.

So... by way of the "garage domino effect", if I need to get the stereo out, the first thing I have to do is take the recycling in... makes sense, right?

We did get a bit more canning done this week... beans mostly. Nice to have them on the shelves. We hope everyone's gardening adventures have been good this summer!

In 1956, he was drinking at a bar in New York City when a rather boisterous argument ensued regarding his flying ability. Pork and Stuffing Bake This filling entree won’t add any heat to the kitchen.

6 slices reduced-calorie white bread, toasted and cut into cubes 1/2 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup finely chopped celery 3/4 cup water 1 teaspoon meat seasoning 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 4 (4-ounce) lean tenderized pork tenderloins or cutlets 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can reduced-fat cream of chicken soup 1. In a large bowl, combine bread cubes, onion and celery. Add water, meat seasoning and parsley flakes. Mix well to combine.

2. Pat mixture into an 8-by-8-inch microwaveable glass baking dish. Evenly arrange pork tenderloins over stuffing. Spoon chicken soup evenly over top.

3. Cover and microwave on HIGH (100 percent power) for 25 minutes or until meat is tender, turning dish after 15 minutes. Let set for 2 to 3 minutes.

Divide into four servings.

Royal Ruby Glass

Q: I have four saucers, four teacups and a sugar and creamer in Royal Ruby glass. It has such a beautiful color, I am curious about how it was made. -- Raynette, Springdale, Ark. A: Although the ancient Egyptians were known to make red glass, most of the pieces seen in American shops and antiques malls are of fairly recent vintage. The 1920s and ‘30s saw pieces being manufactured, and after a lull, production picked up again during the 1940s when Anchor Hocking introduced its pattern of Royal Ruby. The company used copper to achieve its rich color.

Some of this type of glass used gold, but its use was, of course, much more expensive to produce. This glass was made in a variety of hues, from the deep-red colors of ruby to the lighter shades of cranberry.

The Royal Ruby glass produced by Anchor Hocking is plentiful and fairly inexpensive. Most collectors are especially interested in the pre-World War II pieces. Prices vary, but I would think your teacups and saucers are worth about $35 for the set, the sugar and creamer about half that amount. continued on page 12

Make Kale Chips With Kids

Hail to kale! I’m not sure what brought the green, leafy, good-foryou veggie into such renown, but try to open a foodie magazine or blog without some recipe bowing to its virtues. I’ve been following the trend and now dutifully toss it into stir fries and salads, and even let it stand alone all spiced up in our family’s most recent obsession -- kale chips.

While kale chip recipes abound, I found the best, foolproof technique from Tricia Cornell, mom of two, freelance writer and author of the book “Eat More Vegetables: Making the Most of Your Seasonal Produce” (Minnesota Historical Society Press).

The cookbook is chock full of easy-to-follow “family friendly, get kids involved” veggie recipes such as her tasty take on “Squash Chili” and “Soupe au Pistou.” True to form, she has the kale-chipmaking technique down to a science. “When my kids clamor for kale chips, who am I to refuse?” she said as her 7-year-old old son Arlo chopped up the kale, and 9-year-old Nora grated Parmesan for the chips that would accompany their hamburger sliders supper. “I want the chips to be tasty and crispy every time we make them,” she said.

Pick up a bunch at your local market and enjoy making and tasting these light, crunchy treats with your kids.

CHEESY KALE CHIPS Makes 4 cups

1 large bunch kale (12 ounces) both Lacinato and curly kale work well.

1 tablespoon olive or canola oil 1/4 cup finely grated Parmesan 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper or 1/2 teaspoon pepper flakes Here’s the fun:

1. Heat oven to 400 degrees F. 2. Trim off the long, tough center stems from kale and discard.

Slice leaves into 1- to 2-inch pieces and place in a large bowl. Pour oil, cheese, salt and pepper over kale, and massage kale well with your hands, making sure every piece is covered, but not dripping with oil.

3. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and spread kale in a single layer. Place in oven and immediately reduce heat to 250 F. 4. Bake about 20 minutes, until crisp, stirring kale and turning pans halfway through. It’s important to keep an eagle eye toward the end; you want crisp, not brown.

5. When completely cool, serve. If there are any leftovers, store in airtight container up to three days.

Variation: Barbecue Kale Chips Omit Parmesan and pepper. Stir 1 teaspoon pimenton de la vera (smoked Spanish paprika) and 1/2 teaspoon sugar into the salt before adding.
