tand on your own two… go it alone… show your individuality… free your mind and free yourself

These are the quotes that came to mind when I thought about a subject that’s close to my heart… Independence. Releasing issue 2 on the 4th of July wasn’t planned; it just fell into the pattern of printing cycles; however it feels right to talk about independence on a day that’s renowned for breaking away and establishing your own identity. From starting new jobs to starting new relationships, pursuing dreams to embarking on new ventures this issue is about making a choice that is right for you and seeing through to the end! It’s been a hectic three months since Issue 1, it wouldn’t be Seventy2Minutes if it hadn’t, and I’ve been lucky enough to cross paths with some good people who have helped bring issue 2 together. This Issue features an interview with Judi Shekoni and she gives us some insight into her wonderful ability to will her dreams into being, her business savvy and her role in Twilight: Breaking Dawn. Finding myself intrigued by the cornucopia of talent behind what

most would dismiss as a ‘pretty face’ in ‘I’m not just a pretty face’ I learn, from the models themselves, that what you see is not always what you get… even if it does make you ever so slightly jealous that these beauties have brains too! I indulge my love for business with a conversation with James Utt, co-founder of Svica jeans. I love innovation and when I stumbled across Svica I pounced on the chance to talk to James and share his story. It’s on page 7 and a must for denim lovers and red carpet diva’s alike!

prototype to our family and close friends. The reception was immediate and overwhelming. SVICA Jeans was finally a reality! At that point, all we had left to do was take our inspiration, duplicate it hundreds of thousands of times and market the concept across the planet. Our plan was to revolutionize the way jeans are worn. Question: How on earth do you do something like that?

Inspiration Meets Opportunity At 72mespecially ones

that are fashionable and time saving, so imagine the frenzy when we stumbled across SVICA Jeans!

At first, we thought our idea was so momentous that we spoke about it only in private. Jeans wearers needed choices that allowed them to express themselves.

Jeans that let you switch up your style to match your mood and cause a stir? Yes please! We’re ready for the next big thing in denim wear and James Utt, Co-Founder of SVICA, tells us exactly why we should be excited.

It was crazy and cool and unheard of in the industry. We knew that the designer jeans market was ready for a new idea – something cut from whole cloth and stamped with brazen individuality.

James Utt: It was in Newport Beach, California three years ago when the idea for what would eventually become SVICA Jeans struck cofounder Dianna Smith and me. We were in the middle of dinner and the scribbled ideas on the napkin between us quickly became more important than the meals left cooling on our plates. It was a strange but compelling vision of a line of designer jeans with interchangeable side inserts (we call them Links now) that allowed the wearer to customize each pair of jeans with luxurious fabrics in a variety of colors, patterns and prints that suited their specific need – and lifestyle.

In our spare hours, we gathered denim and fabric samples and spent more late nights than I can count – stitching and sewing and ripping seams and doing it all over again. It was frustrating at times but exciting and certainly worth it. When the first pair finally came together – and we were pleased with the outcome – Dianna and I knew that we held something of great value and consequence in our hands.

we love innovation,

I remembered an old Chinese proverb that stated “the journey of thousand miles begins with a single step.” I sat down at my desk, picked up my cell phone and turned on my computer.

In the end, the answer was as simple and faultless as the breaking dawn. You make a lot of phone calls, send countless e-mails, and begin to rally people in marketing and fabrication and distribution and advertising and retail to your cause. We quickly found that the best people in the industry will rush to aid and support your discovery if they think it’s worthy enough. We’ve had a phenomenal outpouring of support and demand for SVICA. We can’t wait to see you sparkle and captivate in a pair of SVICA Jeans soon!

ask Alex I read your last response in 72m’s first issue and I really liked what you had to say so I just wanted to know your take on my problem.

I’m studyin g for a Masters, have a child with special needs (from a previou s relatio nship) and also work full time.

I have an on-off boyfrie nd that I really love. He’s exactly what I want in a man and eventua lly I’d like us to live together.

I’ve noticed that he gets really annoyed with me when I have a lot on and can’t pay him much attention and this always leads to arguments about me ‘not caring enough’. After our last argument he wouldn’t speak to me for three days and this

We’ve had our ups and downs and he says he loves me too but recently things have been hard.

T

really stressed me out. I know his behavio ur sounds childish but when we last separated, it was for around 6 months, it really hurt, I missed him quite badly and just wanted to get things back together again. I don’t want to give up on everyth ing I’m working towards but I don’t want to lose my man either! What do you think?

The Alex Experience

here is a well worn saying that it takes many people to make a world and I try to believe that the myriad of possibilities is always going to bring to you someone totally new and different who will make you experience the world in a whole new way perhaps to astound you with what you never before believed is possible.

Before reading your letter I had never directly known of a person who had found contentment in an on-off relationship. A relationship with a person defined by arguments, by their need for attention and by the resulting psychological and emotional cruelty when you do not measure up to his expectations. Who could fail to be convinced of your connection by this yearning to have more whenever you are apart? Would anybody need to ask whether an unswerving loyalty to this kind of relationship might be at the least questionable? Another thing I have learned is that one of the many products of our technological and economically driven culture is the increasing disappearance of the genuinely mature. It does not appear to be favoured that we grow to our full potential, and this includes a full transition from girls to women, from boys to men. Many ‘adults’ bear all the hallmarks of their un-evolved child-like thought processes and subsequent behaviour and in most cases this is not purposeful or intentional. They are merely behaving as they have been taught or as they have been allowed to. In the majority we subconsciously attract people who enable, or at least do not significantly challenge our way of doing things in order for us to maintain what we believe to be our ‘reality’, even if this is little more than to facilitate an ongoing ‘high chair tyranny’. This unwitting existence may even be handed down whole generations unchecked, as cycles of behaviour are repeated by observance, direct imitation, rebellion or instruction, none of which is assisted by the media, peer pressure or the ‘herd mentality’.

This in turn makes it extremely difficult to arrive at the possibility of a genuine moment to stop and be aware that a process of unlearning or re-learning may be necessary for our future growth, development, fulfilment and for the benefit of those we care for and who depend on us. One thing is for certain, you cannot change a person who is not themselves willing to seriously self reflect and consider a genuine attempt to do so. Too many new dawns founder on the rocks of lip service to change while actions continue unchecked to ongoing, even greater misery. So what now? Well, first you must excuse me as I descend into sentiment and admit my love for the voice of the great Nat King Cole, and to one of his greatest laments in the Eden Ahbez penned ‘Nature Boy’ …”the greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return”.

Yes, yes I hear you, the simplicity of a perfect pop ballad lyric is not real life. But what is the greatest art if not truth? You have described in yourself a person of resilience, diversity, drive, commitment and resourcefulness. Someone not shy of challenge, who is prepared to dig in, a person of concern, of intelligence and of talent. I would add to that a quality that we all possess although many have been convinced to deny this in themselves, a quality that exists in women’s very biochemistry that they can bear for the world the joy of children. Creativity. So which would you choose? To abdicate this power of creativity to the control and manipulation of others, both personal and social so that your life is lived, but you don’t live your life? Or that you allow the abundance of possibility within you to flow and begin to build from the inside out an experience of synchronicity and oneness that begins with not just liking who you are, but really loving who you are that will mean, inevitably, that you be loved in return Ready to experience the insights of Alex? I’m not just a pretty face

1. I model because… 2. Women treat me like… 3. Men often think… 4. There’s more to me than what you see…

Beauty or Brains? 72m talks to some pretty faces and poses 4 questions The world has always been fascinated, if not a little obsessed, with beauty. A pretty face, in the right place at the right time, can bring its owner wealth and adulation. A pretty face in the wrong place can find itself blamed for the downfall of empires (Ask Helen of Troy), the undoing of Governments and the ‘irreconcilable difference’ in divorce! Thanks to global media the world has grown accustomed to a conveyor belt of pretty faces with little more to offer than a cheeky attitude and a flirty smile. We accept that, eventually, they’ll be cheated on by a footballer or end up as ‘lad’s mag’ fodder so we’re over it already, right? Then why is it hard to imagine anyone, choosing a vocation based purely on how they look, having more to offer? Of all the quintessential decisions a person has to make (think life/death, good/ evil) clearly beauty/brains is the final frontier because you can’t have it both ways now, can you? 72m

I had never considered the possibility of becoming a model or any other profession related to my physicality. I started modelling because of an intuition, some years ago. I actually enjoy modelling so much because I relate to the best professionals who have intelligent proposals in their lives. Keeping your goals in this business is so difficult because when you get to be a known face everybody tries to seduce you with proposals to get more famous or to be a “star of something”. When it happens and you don’t decide your own life you become the puppet of an agency

2

On the issue of ‘the treatment I receive from women’, I try to relate to people of many worlds because it enriches the soul and mind and helps me learn about life. I’ve never felt the envy of other

“What Men usually think of me?” I am extremely sensitive. I’ve paid “the price” of extreme sensitivity several times. Sensitivity + seriousness +confidence = femme fatale! I am also a Pisces so I think my future husband will have to deal with the two sides of me: very sweet in addition to a tough and independent girl… and how confusing they are!

4

Of course there is more to me than what you see! The body is a shell for the soul and it keeps holding us back while the soul helps us to dream and project ourselves to extraordinary levels. I’m introverted and do not always show what I feel but I do not always allow my eyes to conceal the truth…

I’m not just a pretty face I model because… I love the fact, that I break the mould. I have freckles and I’m 5’5”. Women treat me like… they are surprised, that I am a model. Men often think… I am very young. There’s more to me than what you see… because I’ve been married for nearly 10 years and I used to be a student Irish Dancing teacher, to the wee ones (beginners). Currently, I’m also studying photography and writing.

I love to read about anything beneficial and proactive. Politics is one of the main subjects that makes me tick. I am also in the process of obtaining my Law Degree, all while being an international model.

I’m not just a pretty face I model because… I love fashion and I like to try on different outfits and to wear pretty clothes. I am very personable and I enjoy going to different places and meeting new people. I am very comfortable in front of the camera. Women treat me like… I am egocentric. That is not true. One time I was in a beauty pageant and a girl said “Look at her. She’s so stuck up.” that is so unfair to think that someone is stuck up because they are pretty. There are things about my looks that I am self-conscious about.

Men often think… I am too pretty, and therefore unapproachable but that’s not true. No one should be afraid to approach another person because they feel that the person is too good- looking and will reject them. There’s more to me than what you see… because I am very into art and my schoolwork at Christ the King HS. I take art classes there, I maintain a 90 average and I plan to attend the Art Institute of Manhattan when I graduate.

S

ome people would find interviewing a vampire a scary prospect! Throw in ‘Amazonian illusionist’ and most would run for the hills, but 72m has wanted to catch up with Judi Shekoni ever since we discovered that there’s more to this 6ft stunner than Precious from Eastenders… Hi Judi, thanks for speaking with 72m. We’re hugely grateful for your time; we know how busy you are. Just to give you a little background about us; 72m is the magazine for busy people. It’s about balancing a busy life, following your ambitions, chasing your dreams all whilst looking amazing and making it seem effortless! I’ve been told you fit the bill perfectly! 72m: So, first thing first, tell us about you. How do you describe yourself and what you do when you meet someone new?

JS: I would describe myself as eclectic… I don’t particularly follow the rules and as life goes on I follow my own truth more and more versus what you are supposed to do with your life, say or be. Right now I would say I am an actress, that is my first love and because of Twilight I have been working on it primarily for the last 6 months. The “title” I assign myself normally depends on where the majority of my time is spent during that present time, so you may find it changes throughout the year. It also can change depending on what company I am with – just, essentially, what part of me is at the forefront at that particular time. Let’s talk about ‘model’ Judi. Was this your first ambition? Being tall, slim and pretty did people automatically presume that you were destined to be a model? 72m:

“Pretty much anything I have decided to do has come about – thus I am a strong believer in the power of the human mind…” aged about 9 I decided I was going to model on that show. I wasn’t tall as a child but there was a girl I knew who was 6ft and every day I imagined growing up to be six feet tall. I am exactly 6 feet tall and 7 years later I became their (This Morning’s) regular model. Pretty much anything I have decided to do has come about – thus I am a strong believer in the power of the human mind!

JS: I watched television there was a show called ‘This Morning,’ and 20

seventy2minutes.com  Summer 2011

72m: How long did you model before you felt you wanted/needed more?

JS: I had a desire to act too – but opportunities were limited in Manchester. But I did apply for auditions for Rada etc however I never actually took them, as a moment of doubt crept it – ‘Why would I think I could do that’ I try and fight them now. There is no specific time that I modelled for everything just flowed into everything else, and I still do shoots now… modelling can be very fun and creative experience in the right circumstances.

seventy2minutes with:  Judi Shekoni 72m: Judi the ‘actress’. Eastenders, Casualty, Hollyoaks, Navy NCIS, King of Queens; to name a few and now ‘Twilight; Breaking dawn’… you’re playing Zafrina, an Amazonian vampire that’s quite pivotal to the love shared between Edward and Bella, two of the main characters…

JS: Yes. I read the books and fell in love with the story! It makes you believe in love again. 72m: Does that make you Team Edward?

JS: I’m Team Zafrina! (Laughs) seriously I loved the Edward character from the books so that decision had already been made before I even arrived on set. Unfortunately I’m not as attracted to the nice guys! 72m: The vibe from the Twilight fans is that the casting is spot on and I have to agree. I read Breaking Dawn after I knew you’d been cast and when I reached ‘Zafrina’ I thought “wow, Judi!” How does that make you feel?

JS: Awesome!!! I think that’s 50% of the is work done, if I am right physically for the character… and now I just pray that all the other parts that were within the director, the writer and my power also come together to deepen the character and allow the fans to understand and relate to her even more. 72m: I’m sure all the Twilight fans are dying to know how it was; the filming, the crew, the cast… how was the entire experience?

JS: A dream, an absolute dream. Working with Bill Condon blew my mind… I loved DreamGirls, Chicago, Kinsey… basically everything he has ever done, and I just felt so blessed to be there. There was such a family feel on set, and I felt comfortable from the start. All the past cast looked after us, and I feel like I got to know everyone in a special way.

72m: Judi, the ‘business woman’. Extension Evolution. Tell us more

72m: Finally; the best 72 minutes of your life has been, or will be…

JS: I own the hair extension company www.ExtensionEvolution.com which launched this year. We provide premium quality hair extensions around the world. Hair has always been my problem and so I wanted to turn these problems into a passion and eventually profit …and so Extension Evolution was born. Its also a chance for me to try and run a business the way I think one should be run with ethics, and responsibility to the customers… its such a joy to have in my life. I was studying for an MBA [Masters in Business Administration] but half way through it suddenly struck me that I just wanted to do it, I wanted to run my own business and not just read about it!

JS: I think they are coming up… I am going to Khanna Vision Institute in Westlake to have Lasik Surgery this morning. And apparently in less that 72 minutes I will have my sight back..

Zafrina’s hair, in Twilight: Breaking Dawn, is actually one of my products so my work also helps me to promote my business too! 72m: That’s a lot of strings to your bow and some that people aren’t even aware of! What next for Judi? Where do you imagine yourself in 5 years time?

JS: I would like to do more films, I would love to feel comfortable with my film career that I knew I was in a place of having great opportunities to play different roles, and work with some of my heroes.

Working with Bill Condon blew my mind… I loved DreamGirls, Chicago, Kinsey… basically everything he has ever done, and I just felt so blessed to be there.

I have a few ambitions but I hold them close to my chest so I’m not one of those people who talk, but someone who does. I hope to extend www.ExtensionEvolution.com and also pass on any lessons I have learnt with my other company www.ActorsEvolution.com which helps actors build their careers.

There’s no doubt that the incredible intensity of the highest grossing film of all time, Avatar, inspired countless fashion runway trends (take a nostalgic look to Jean Paul Gaultier Couture Spring 2010 collection), but the Na’vi aren’t contributing to 2011. These people of whom I speak inspired the very creation of James Cameron’s blockbuster, attributing to the emotion, plot, and thus, the loss to ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow’s Hurt Locker for Original Screenplay. Why? Cameron’s storyline isn’t original at all. It’s history. These people aren’t blue, ten feet tall, or bioluminescent at night. However, they do wear feathered and beaded necklaces, and once upon a time shot

One of Columbus’ many colossal mistakes included referring to the natives of this afore-uncharted land as Indians, thinking that he’d landed in charted India. For the lack of a known unifying word of all the great nations, I’ll continue to be ‘politically correct’—a euphemism for politically insufficient— and address them, with the utmost respect, as Native Americans. The industry—with ‘Navajo-inspired’ fashion and pieces like the Pendleton Meets Opening Ceremony Jean Mini Skirt—is literally skirting around the fact that these native muses are, unlike the Mayans or Aztecs, an existing people. They exist beyond the museum displays and the inaccurate (though well-intentioned) Twilight series. What I’m trying to say is that though they inspire designs for the well-known designers like Adam Lippes and Roberto Cavalli, they go unrecognized, as if the Native-Americans are only in Lippes’ smart plaid patterns and full-length ponchos or Cavalli’s subtly beautiful men’s neckpieces. What is lost in translation from culture to fashion is how the Native American cultures

are powerful and significant; they are far beyond a mere fashion focus. According to Style.com, Marant’s Fall 2011 Ready to Wear Collection’s message was: ‘Go Navajo,’ which, in my opinion, is a good piece of advice. However, though this may seem like an unmistakable gesture towards one of the most well known Native American nations (among, most likely, only two others made famous by modern-day media—The Quileute tribe featured in the Twilight series and Powhatan, home to Disney’s Pocahontas), it may not be enough. What does it mean to ‘Go Navajo,’ exactly? Do Marant’s single-feathered earrings, fringed mile-high boots, and gorgeous knit sweaters, in themselves, give meaning to ‘going Navajo?’ Perhaps going Navajo means something deeper, such as understanding the creation story, ‘The Glittering or White World,’ or knowing that they like best to be called who they are: the Diné people. Designers interpret inspirations, emote these interpretations through their designs, and display them on runways across the globe. They are impressive, intelligent, and skilled beyond belief. What I’m asking further of them isn’t too large of a request, and it may purely be observational. How can designers truly commit to the culture and translate its essence to the rest of the world, especially since it is in their power to give power to the once powerful nations native to this land? Ray Onzuka is a short Hawaiian, Black, and Japanese young woman from O’ahu’s west coast, recently culture-shocked in her college move to Seattle’s rainy, cloudy, and fashionable city. She grew up without changing seasons, without fashion runways, and without fashion blogs—but she grew up with a mother who’s quoted for “no matter where you go, you always gotta look good.”

health, wealth & wisdom

Whisper it quietly, but there has never been a better time to have a mental illness.

N

ot that there’s ever a ‘Good’ time as such, but in 21st century society, sufferers have plenty in their favour. **Celebrities and sports stars revealing how inner demons have affected their lives. **The recently updated (UK) Disability and the Equality Act of 2010 which is designed to do more to protect, amongst others, people with a mental illness in the workplace . **The fact that, even in Britain, we now live in a confessional culture where feelings aren’t frowned upon, and it seems half of Joe Public has a blog expressing their thoughts. And yet, there is still a large percentage of sufferers forced to adopt a Painted Smile, a mask saying ‘I’m alright’, for fear of being seen as vulnerable. With 1 in 6 workers experiencing depression and anxiety and stress costing the UK economy £26 billion pounds a year, and 70 million working days, it’s easy to see why businesses still take a dim view. However, over half of the economic cost and a seventh of the working days go down the drain because employers fail to give their staff the correct support and assistance with work related problems – which in turn leads to £2.4 billion worth of staff leaving due to mental ill health. My own experiences have, on the whole, been positive with employers. When I worked as a breakfast radio presenter, my boss was happy for me to move to a more palatable mid

morning shift when the stress of early starts was making me worse. Similarly when I planned a mid twenties career break to go to University, my employer at the time allowed me a swift departure to deal with issues relating to that step (which I had put off due to school and college bullying in my teens) with no hard feelings and continued freelance employment that carried on throughout my studies. So is honesty the best policy? Well certainly in those two instances and definitely in my current situation. After being offered the job, I was faced with the standard medical form and decided to be up front about my illness, even going into the detail of the level of medication I was taking, an amount that ironically doubled due to the stress of waiting for confirmation that I had the post. What I’d put on the form required a medical and it was more than seventy days later that I was finally sent written confirmation. Within those seventy days there were many when I feared I’d lost the job, many when I was being pushed to and fro by recruitment companies who weren’t sure what medical I was due to have, or even where. In the end I had a 600 mile round trip for a thirty minute check up which confirmed I passed with flying colours.

Many people lose their employment due to lack of understanding and support available to employees and or employers…

www.jobsinmind-worksolutions.org.uk

Thanks to my honesty instead of it being a total shock, she was able to deal with my revelations in a considered way and, I like to think, respected me for being so open.

Since then we have been able to build strategies into my routine, most of which I haven’t needed, and I have become an important part of the team, even earning a pay rise. So currently a happy ending for me, but there are enough scares stories out there to remind me that I’m one of the lucky ones.

Life interrupted

Sometimes in life the big proverbial stuff happens. And you know that in that split second that life will simply never, ever, EVER be the same again. Somehow you seem to have been awarded a new label that you didn’t ask for – divorcee, widow(er), cancer, breakdown ??? And it hurts beyond a hot poker in the eye and I am one of the many others to respectfully tip my hat to your journey and send you only good wishes. However hard – Please trust that where ever you might be, you are in exactly the place you were meant.

When we acknowledge that changes, challenges and hardships are there to deepen us – to remind us that we DO get second chances and that we are each made up of love, compassion and healing – Something simply extraordinary happens.

I

recall a time in my own life that I found myself curled up in a Therapists chair crying “I’m broken – everything is so broken and I don’t know which bit to fix first” Looking back some 15 years on and with a wealth of hindsight it is easy to see that I always knew I would “fix” myself – I just needed to prioritise the order to do it in! And find the hope, strength and stamina to hang in there. Recently I had dinner with someone whom I hadn’t seen since this big proverbial stuff happened. He openly marvelled at how different I and my lifestyle was post “brokenness”. I confessed that whilst undoubtedly that was the single, hardest time in my life what I did get in return was a brilliant opportunity. An opportunity to feel so broken that I could / had to rebuild myself again – only this time with the bricks of my choosing. Each personality trait, daily habit and label was for me to decide to include, or not. Slowly and with great care I did rebuild me, the me of my choice. I’m reminded of a quote “when you strip away all the labels, what you have left is infinite” and for me that’s the deciding point. That spirit, soul, spark that can only be you, you at your single most unique and infinite best and pure you. Isn’t it great to be living as you?

A new chapter of you Your wellbeing – It all starts with self love and nurturing. Build a self care routine that is respectful to your mind and body. Eat good, fresh and nutritious food. Your 5 a day is a minimum guideline, exceed it. Be active – Take time out to move more. Walking or running can be hugely therapeutic, gifting you the time and space to think alone or maybe team up with a buddy for support and a chit chat. Quieten your mind – Relaxation and breathing techniques are divine self care. I always open coaching sessions with a breathing exercise. It lays a foundation for clarity and gets us in the perfect mindset for a brilliant hour of self discovery. The local leisure centre might hold yoga or Pilates classes. Try one out, find what works for you. Once you have moved into acceptance of your life, you can begin to focus on the creation of the next chapter. Taking the time to consider the life that you want to live and going forwards. This stage is about going inward, finding some peace and gaining a vision on what it is that you do want. And then paving the way and making the new you, your way. Working with a life coach can help you tap into this and drill down to the uniqueness and purpose and passion that is you and the life that you want to live. Uncover your passions. What is your thing? Our only motive is to your own personal and brilliant successes. When you know where you want to go in life and have a clear plan, it becomes a whole lot easier. Face the right direction and it doesn’t matter what speed you go- all you need is to keep going, building positive focus, step by step.

I

t maybe a while since you last went to work and you’re now about to take your first steps back into the working world. Well, as the maxim goes, proper preparation prevents poor presentation, so start putting the time in to developing who you are and who you want to be. How you decide to style yourself will play a huge part in how you feel, how you are received and therefore will contribute to whether you’ll be a run away success or not. Firstly the reason for your absence is irrelevant. What is important is that you accept who you are today. So whether you’re a yummy mummy and have found that your breast no longer sit where they used to or, perhaps, your hips never quite recovered after pushing past the shoulders, the woman you are today is gorgeous. Giving birth in itself is a beautiful thing and a wonderful part of life. I encourage you to start there and appreciate the significant achievements in your life. You may possibly be returning to work because of an illness; a severely broken limb, heart trouble or even cancer. You too deserve an award because anyone who has gone through such trauma to emerge victorious on the other side is a real champion. And let’s face it, some of you whilst having overcome the worst of it may have to continue living with the effects for years to come. Does that make you any less of a woman? Most certainly not! Many have fallen for far less. Les Brown has said “when you get knocked to the ground, try to land on your back because if you can look up, you can get up!” Now that you feel the part, the next step is to marry your feeling with looking the part. With a few simple tips, tricks and techniques you can fake it until you make it. Firstly, there is only a small window in which a first impression can be made, a maximum of 7 seconds to be precise, as outlined

Life interrupted in my workshop and audio set. After that time judgments are made based on your education level, delivery when speaking, personality and a number of other factors. This may seem daunting, however you can make it easier for yourself to win an audience by doing a bit of research and looking the part. Whenever you go out try to remember that you are not only a person but also a brand. Upon entering a room something communicates before you open your mouth, it’s your style. I call it your style talk. It can cause you to win or loose your potential job/ customer. My mantra, “let your style be your microphone” is especially key at this time because your style becomes the amplifier of your voice. It is very important that your voice and style are congruent so here are some style tips taken from my book Styling Stripped Bare to help you make a great first impression when returning to work and capture your audience’s attention. Always wear your correct size underwear – This is the second most important layer of clothing after putting on confidence. Pay keen attention to your colours – Avoid wearing a white bra underneath a white or light coloured shirt as this may send the wrong signal to your future employer/ customer. At work underwear should remain invisible. To add charisma and energy to your outfit add a yellow corsage or replace the white shirt with a red one. Blue is a very harmonious colour that works well for job interviews as it symbolizes loyalty and intelligence – A navy blue suit will work better than black on most skin tones as it’s not as harsh on the skin and is still a good base colour that works well with most others. Always create a waistline using a fitted jacket or waist belt

Styling Says Find your confidence and make a personal statement through style, with advice and support from founder of ‘Styling Says’, author of ‘Styling Stripped Bare’ and Image Consultant Tanesha Westcarr www.stylingstrippedbare.com www.stylingsays.com www.stylingsays.com/style-talk If you are a fuller figure avoid bulky fabrics or oversized clothes – Wear structured pieces that sculpt your body. Lastly, a pair of heels will give your legs a better shape and improve your posture – The higher the heel the better but always stay within your comfort zone as a wobbly woman is very unattractive!

However you choose to get back on track don’t feel that one solution will fix everything. As the editor of 72m approached ‘Styling Says’ and MoodBoost because I believe in the benefits of NLP and I’ve experienced, first hand, how changing your outer image can impact on your mood and outlook on life. If asking for help is outside of your comfort zone start small; keep a diary, write a private or anonymous blog and build your trust in yourself to express your hurt, loneliness or fear. When you’re ready find the support that best suits you and plan your way back to a life of your choosing.

veryone wants the secret to great abs!

They’re looking for the magic formula and the quick fix to fabulous looking abs. Well, I can tell you it’s an open secret and if you stick to it you will keep them looking great. This is the important bit; you have to watch your calorie intake! Make sure you’re not putting in more calories than you’re burning off during your workouts because too much calories and your body will store it as fat around your middle.

Increase your corr power!

Too much fat around you midriff will hide all your ab workout efforts. So keeping a healthy eating routine and watching the calories is step 1.

Step 2 is the exercises themselves… Below I’ve chosen some of my favourite and most effective. I’m presuming you have no back or neck issues that prevent you from performing these exercises, if you do consult your physician first! I’ve outlined the reps/sets you should aim

Sit ups (bent leg/straight leg) Cross your straight leg on your bent leg and lift and turn your shoulder towards the crossed knee. Again aiming for 20 - 30 repetitions, repeat on your other side.

for but start small and work your way up! It doesn’t take much if you follow the simple rules and you’ll have the sexy abs you’ve always wanted in no time at all!

Modified oblique crunches Cross your straight leg on your bent leg and lift and turn your shoulder towards the crossed knee. Again aiming for 20 - 30 repetitions, repeat on your other side. Reverse Ab Crunches Place both knees in the air and roll your knees into your stomach for 20 -25 repetitions. This is great for hitting the lower ab area.

TIP: Ab work outs are hard and you’ll soon feel them burn no matter your fitness level! If you’re a beginner reduce the reps to 12 and do 1 set of these exercises. Intermediates go for the 20 – 30 repeating once or twice. If you feel like you want the challenge maintain your reps at 20 – 30 but push for 3 – 4 sets! seventy2minutes.com  Summer 2011

Ab crunches Keeping both knees in the air lift your chest towards your knees. Keep your hands behind your head. Remember to look at the ceiling/sky so you don’t strain your neck! Go for 20 - 30 repetitions. Leg/knee circles Lay on your back with your legs bent or, for a more challenging position, keep your legs straight. Circle your knees/legs 10 - 15 times one way and then the same reps the other direction! The bigger the circle the more challenging the exercise!

Mon£y Matter$ To buy or not to buy? D.E Sackey

T

hat is the question! In times of economic and financial instability the answer becomes quite contentious; not just of a simple choice of tenure but the difference between being the ‘King of your own castle’ or being at the mercy of an ‘over [land]lord’.

There are few, recent studies, into internationally comparative home ownership as cultural differences impact on the definition of ‘home owner’ but studies into 1998-2002 statistics show that, on average, over 60% of people around the world own their own property (as a percentage of the total population). This may seem like an indication of the prevailing desire to own a piece of

the planet for yourself but research shows that respective Governments have much to do with encouraging residents to invest in property! Unsurprisingly after the populary known ‘credit crunch’ (reported to have started as early as 2004, BBC News, 2009) home ownership declined. The reduction in affordable mortgages and the introduction of deposits of as high as 40% meant that few could afford the best rates available.

RENT IT! Renting has, in the past, been considered the poor persons option, with some believing that rental money is dead money. The financial crisis has forced a re-think and renting is making a comeback.

For those who are able to choose we looked into some of the popular drivers of deciding to rent or buy!

BUY IT! Consider it an investment, inheritance stock or the mark of adult independance, it’s undeniable that owning your own property remains the dominant choice. However, mortgages come with great responsibilities.

The good…

The good…

1. Flexibility. Most rental agreements can be negotiated to allow the tenant the flexibility needed to extend or reduce a rental contract. Perfect if your work demands you travel a lot or if your life circumstances change unexpectedly.

1. One day… all this could be yours. Mortgages can last up to 30 years but at the end, if you’ve played ball, your home is your own. Sell and downsize, pass on to your children or, simply, enjoy.

2. Affordability; Most people are better able to afford 3 months rental deposit than they are the 10%-40% needed for a mortgage and that deposit is refundable when you’re ready to move on.

2. Stability; As long as you’ve done all the math and you can comfortably afford the repayments buying allows you to stay within an area and, effectively, set down roots. Ideal if you’re starting/growing a family or are intent on being part of a given community.

3. More choice: With fewer barriers than buying you could find yourself renting that 4 bedroom house in the country far easier than trying to save up the £50k+ deposit to buy it And the bad… Landlords from hell can make a rental experience… well… hellish! Cheeky reasons for witholding your deposit, ignoring that dodgy boiler and turning up unexpectedly for ‘inspections’… arrrrrghh!

32

With no definitive data, readily available, on the percentage of people (per relevant population) renting it’s difficult to make international comparisons but one emerging theme is the sharp increase in the availability of rental property coupled with a sharp increase in rental costs. The Uk reports a 40% rise in people choosing to rent; equalling 15.6% of the relevant population in privately rented homes. Throw in social housing, homelessness and multiple occupancy homes and you begin to build a varied, and often unclear, picture of how we live today.

seventy2minutes.com  Summer 2011

3. Freedom of choice: Pink walls, yellow carpet and artex on the cieling? Your house, and to some extent, your choice! And the bad… House prices can go down, as sharply as they can rise, selling can be stressful and costs can mount over time. Buying does not gurantee ownership and the bank is your landlord until that final payment is made!

O

h so the song goes, and whilst many a diva may (or not) stomp defiantly at the rousing bay of Bey it seems like it’s still, very much, a man’s world.

It’s not difficult to Google stats about women over the world, there’s tons of it. For a start there are 3.4 Billion of us women in the world, according to UN records and around half of us live in China, India, USA, Indonesia, Brazil and Pakistan (listed in order from highest). The other 1.7 Billion populate the remaining 225, UN designated, areas/Countries of the world. When it comes to work we make up 40.4% of the employed population with most of us either preferring to work, or predominantly employed, in the service industry (think waitressing, call centres). In developing countries like SubSaharan Africa and South Asia we’re more likely to ‘work the land’, with about 60% of us, in these regions, working in agriculture. We’re also more likely to be the ‘employee’ rather than the ‘employer’ but when it comes to working for ourselves we’re quite happy to have a go with over 19% of us working women claiming to be self-employed. If you want to be involved in decisions that shape the country you live in head on over to Bermuda or the Philippines. 55% of their

On average we bear 2.7 children and are likely to call them Aidan or Sophia

When it comes to life and other things if you fancy a long life Japan is the place for you. At birth the average woman lives to 85 years old compared to 45 years old in Afghanistan. Globally women still live about 5 years longer than men, and although some men may believe this has something to do with hard work, we say poppycock! In the home, whether a woman works full-time or not, she still has to take care of the cooking, cleaning, dependents (old and young) and household shopping. So there we have it. In a nutshell the more things change the more they seem to stay the same!

legislators and senior officials are women. You may want to avoid Yemen, Pakistan and Algeria with less than 5% of their movers and shakers being of the female persuasion! If you’ve ever yearned to be a supermodel and cursed your, seemingly, inferior stature, fear not, the average woman is about 5’ 4” and weighs in at 164lbs. If the domestic life is for you take note; the youngest age we can get married without consent from a parent is 12 years old, Equatorial Guinea, compared to 9 years old, Lebanon, if our parents grant us the permission. On average we bear 2.7 children and are likely to call them Aidan or Sophia

Play the hand you’re dealt? Tarot cards were not originally intended for divination and it’s documented that their use was largely recreational, much like ordinary card decks used for Poker. It’s unclear as to where the word originated from, some say the Egyptians, others believe in it’s Islamic roots. One thing that is clear is that Tarot cards for ‘fortune telling’, has eclipsed the original intended use! TAROT READING refers to the use of Tarot cards to determine the answer to a question or, simply, to shed light on a given situation. A tarot reading cannot predict the lottery numbers but the intention is to provide a person with some insights about themselves, their current situations and their potential future state. Readings can be open, where no specific questions are asked or focused on a specific area of a persons life.

It’s all about S

Before you scoff wait a minute! We’re going to test drive a few of these for you. Over the coming issues we’ll take a closer look at everything

The Major Arcana

Before a reading takes place the Tarot cards are shuffled by the person asking the question. The belief is that by touching the cards the person transfers their energy, and the will behind the question, into the cards allowing for a more accurate and personal reading. Any cards that ‘jump’ out of the deck are treated as important ; a potential message that needs to be shared or insight that should not be ignored. SPREAD’EM The ‘spread’ refers to the way the cards are laid out once the person has finished shuffling. There are many spreads that use anything from 1 to all 78 cards but each position in a spread has a meaning. The most popular spread is the ‘Celtic Cross’, often used to answer specific questions, but there are countless others designed with various topics in mind like love, creativity or business. THE DECK Generally a deck of Tarot cards will have 78 cards divided into 4 suits of 14 (named ‘The Minor Arcana’) and 22 un-numbered cards (named ‘The Major Arcana’). As expected, each card has a meaning..

seventy2minutes.com revealed! To put my money where my mouth is I thought I’d better get a ‘real’ reading before touting the values of Tarot so I paid a visit to Sue, a tarot reader, psychic and palm reader in Bedford, England Tarot readings are available on line but like any art, or skill, it takes time to learn how to read the cards fluidly so

visiting a professional reader could save you from misinterpreting a spread! SpellboundSue was recommended by a close friend and after several key aspects of her own reading came to pass I thought ‘yes please’. My initial impression of Sue was that I could trust her, courtesy of my spidey

sense (as I refer to my instinct). The first thing that really threw me was the accuracy of her description of someone very close to my heart; the way the thought and the things they believed in. Thereafter it was difficult not to accept predictions of future children, transatlantic moves and business success! Sue can be contacted through; www.spellboundsue.com
