Mies was criticized by lots of people because of the house's privacy, icluding Farnsworth herself. The privacy problem bothered her when she lived in the house. But when I studied this case, I had different thinking. The site was surrounded with trees and river that gived Mies some space to do this. In this tiny house, Mies put two bathroom in it. ( ) I thinked he wanted to separate the private and public space and it clearly showed that mies was care about privacy. So I start to study the privacy of Farnsworth house.

In the top of rigth data, connecting the private space from four viewpoints with daily timeline. In the bottom part, I use left data and overlap private space of this four view point, so I can classify the space into four level in privacy. Then connect it with timeline data too.

In left data, I pick four viewpoints in the circle which is 30m away from the center of the house. Trying to find where is the private space (or called comfort zone) in the house. I also analyze what makes the privacy in the house. Is furniture? Is fixed? And which part I can use or move so that I can create more private space?

STAGE 3 At this stage, what I want to do is to represent the embarrassment of living in Farnsworth house. Image that now is a cold winter night. You only have a quilt smaller than what you have as usual. You try hard to let it cover all of your body, and if you make it, the quilt becomes thinner, and not heavy enough to make you warm. The fabric of soft machine is just like your quilt. Try to cover something we do not want strangers see. With more watchers, thinner the fabric is. Finally, it is too thin to block the sight of strangers.

STAGE 4 Stage 4, go back to the site. Connecting preceding stage1 to stage3. I try to solve the privacy problem of Farnsworth house. Because that Farnsworth house is a summer house. In winter is too cold to live. I want to solve this problem at the same time.

I put two curved glass wall in the site that the curve is based on the dataof stage1(how we get into Farnsworth) and Stage2 (which part in the house has more utilization rate and how easily watched by strangers it is).

The wall is also a container of water. When winter is coming, the temperature of water rise and reduce the temperature in summer. In that way, the temperature can be balanced. At the same time, because of the temperature difference between inside and outside of glass wall, some change of the wall show up. In summer, hotter vapor condense on the outside surface; In winter, hotter vapor condense on the inside surface. T(。C)

The wall not only creates more private space but also balances the temperature in the site.
