Editor’s Letter
June Although this is not the way we expected to begin our summer, it has been nice to see more people venturing farther out these days and businesses beginning to open up again. I love the creativity people have displayed in times of quarantine. The stories and photos of people making the best of a bad situation are priceless. It can’t go without mentioning the graduating class of 2020. The end of their high school careers wasn’t what they were expecting, but they’ve been surrounded by family, friends, teachers and staff who love them and who did everything possible to make this a special time for them. Gotta love the human spirit! This month’s Business Profile introduces you to Right at Home - In Home Care & Assistance. Sloane and Jim Wendell have found their niche and are providing an invaluable service to many of our ’09 families. Families near and far are finding a great peace of mind with Right at Home providing care for their loved ones. Jake & Lisa Obriotti have lived in Alamo Heights for nearly forty years. Their lives changed when Lisa’s mother retired and they took over her business. Now their hard work has paid off as they have expanded Fickle Pickles by three more locations and ship their pickles all over the country. As we begin to see our community re-open, some churches are meeting again while some are still providing on-line services only. Some restaurants are now open for dine-in, but because the list changes by the day, it’s recommended that you call or check websites before you venture out for church, dinner or to your favorite store. As we all rush to return to normal, it’s important to think about which parts of normal are worth rushing back to. Time spent with the people we love is invaluable. Wishing a very happy Father’s Day to all of you dads. I hope you feel celebrated and loved!

Happenings In ‘09 The Pool Ready for Summer 2020 BY RON AARON EISENBERG
Alamo Heights Swimming Pool operator, Rick Shaw is excited to open the pool for the summer. But, he faces some difficult decisions in adjusting to operational guidelines for public swimming pools set by the State of Texas in the wake of COVID-19 the coronavirus pandemic. The pool, built in 1947, has been Shaw’s baby since 1990 when he took over operation and management of the facility. The City of Alamo Heights recently spent $1.19 million to address a number of issues that threatened the life of the complex. But now, all is good with the physical structure. What’s needed is less virus. When I visited the pool in midMay, it sparkled in afternoon sunshine. Hundreds of seasonal flowers patiently waited transplantation into the pool’s many flower beds and containers. Shaw explained, “The flowers are her jewelry. She’s ready to dance.”
Papouli’s Closed Permanently in Quarry Market 14 JUNE 2020 | 78209magazine.com
Papouli’s founder and CEO Nick Anthony told 78209 Magazine he had hoped to keep Papouli’s at the Quarry Market open. “Our lease expired In March and we were working toward a five-year extension,” Anthony explained. He said the landlord was accommodating and we thought we’d get it done. “But, in mid-march, COVID-19 hit, and with it our customer base disappeared overnight. Our other two stores are going great, but not at Quarry Market.” With no lease, Anthony was able to close the Quarry Market location. His other two locations are at the Forum Shopping Center I-35 at 1604 and at I-10 at Huebner in City View. The company offered all of its Quarry Market employees opportunities to move to the two other stores. “We’re climbing back to a somewhat sustainable level,” Anthony said. He added, “Our landlords have been phenomenal --they are working with us. We are locally owned. We’re not done yet – we have too much passion for the business. We want to be here for a long, long time,” he said.
Alamo Heights Christian Brothers Automotive Store Offers Special Program For First Responders An area auto repair firm recently announced, “As area first responders continue to devote their full attention and support to the community during this trying time, Christian Brothers Automotive aims to ensure that all first responders in need of vehicle repairs and services will be attended to quickly, effectively and safely through streamlined services that prioritize their vehicles first. “Through the VIP-style priority program, first responders can quickly return to their duties of protecting the community without the hassle of having to wait,” for their vehicle to be repaired. Donnie Carr, president of Christian Brothers Automotive added, “First responders are putting themselves at risk for the safety of the community, so prioritizing their vehicles is the least we can do to express our sincere gratitude for their commitment.” “First responders can take advantage of immediate diagnostics and quick lane services and free pick-up and delivery of the vehicle, regardless of work being performed. Participating area locations include Alamo Heights, Helotes, Hill Country Village and Schertz.
COVID-19 Shutdown Gives Hangar Bar & Grill Time for Remodel
A few photos on its Facebook page confirm the Hangar is remodeling its dining areas and perhaps more. Unlike some competitors, it has not offered curbside service but rather shutdown to spruce up. The company did not return phone calls or emails asking for details on the remodel, but its Facebook page promises, “Big changes happening at The Hangar!! We are changing up a lot of things! Stay tuned for our big reveal!”

loane Wendell has a doctorate in environmental engineering and was living the corporate America life for a long time before she had an ah-ha moment and realized she needed to change paths.
“I didn’t feel fulfilled,” she said. “I was recovering from back surgery and had a lot of time to think and realized I wanted to be an entrepreneur and have my own home health business.” After bringing a business plan to her husband, Jim, the couple decided to take over the Right at Home InHome Care and Assistance franchise in San Antonio and have been the owners for the past three years. “I took care of my grandparents for many years, and we took care of Jim’s mother from afar,” Sloane said. “I’ve always enjoyed our older population.” Right at Home, located in ‘09, provides a variety of care levels to seniors in the area who need extra assistance but want to remain in their homes. It can be something as simple as companionship and helping run errands, or it can go all the way up to 24-hour in-home care, helping with meal prep, hygiene, medication reminders, and more. The Wendells have 35 clients currently receiving services, and their private, online family portal allows loved ones near and far to check in on their elder family members. “Twenty-five percent of our clients don’t have any family in town, so the portal allows those from afar to check in on daily schedules, see the things that were done on the prior shift and ask for tasks to be done,” Sloane said. “It allows them to be involved. They can log in 24 hours a day and know what’s going on with mom and dad.” Those looking for someone to watch after their loved one
can have someone come as little as four hours a week, and Sloane said it gives their clients and their families comfort knowing they can stay in their own homes. “For most people, their home is their comfort zone,” she said. “Oftentimes, when you move someone with Alzheimer’s out of their home, it fast forwards the disease.” Since the Coronavirus pandemic began in March, Sloane and Jim have taken several extra precautions with their staff to ensure the safety of their clients. Scheduling changes have been made to limit the number of people coming into contact with their clients, each visitor has their temperature taken, and staff wear personal protective equipment. “Our caregivers have done a beautiful job,” Jim said. “They’ve been very understanding.” Those who visit the Right at Home office will meet the business’s mascot, Salty Bacon, a French bulldog. He attends many marketing events with the Wendells and is loved by their staff. “He greets new employees on their first day and goes out into the community with me and does pet therapy,” Sloane said. When asked what makes this line of work more fulfilling than working in corporate America, Sloane said it’s simple – the thank yous from clients. “They are so thankful to be able to stay in their own homes, and it makes them so happy,” she said.

isa Obriotti grew up an only child, so when she married her husband Jake, who came from a large Italian family, it was a huge blessing to be welcomed.
“Both of my parents passed away really close to the time we got married,” she said. “God works in mysterious ways. I now have all these brothers and sisters, nieces and greatnieces that I love. We enjoy each other so much.” Lisa and Jake met when she was 19, and he was 21, but they didn’t become serious until later in life, well into their late 30s. They both grew up in San Antonio, and Jake’s family had started a wholesale grocery business in the early 1900s. While their business today takes them to the hill country during the weekdays, they have no intention of ever leaving ‘09. “We often laugh when we tell our family members ‘we’ll be there in a minute,’ because it’s true,” Lisa said. “We are literally within a three-minute drive of each other here. It’s so nice.” Throughout the workweek, Jake and Lisa dedicate their time to their business that was originally started by her mother 40 years ago – Fickle Pickles. When her mother, Billie Shaw, decided to retire from running her antique store and pickle business in Boerne, Lisa and Jake took over, growing it to three more locations in Bandera, New Braunfels, and Gruene, and shipping all over the country. Back in the day, the pickles were made in the back room of the original Boerne storefront, but the business grew so much that they have built their own processing facility. “When my mother was alive, we purchased a duplex behind Sunset Ridge Shopping Center, and my mom lived on the bottom, and we lived on the top,” Lisa said. “We’d come
home every day and share with her the new developments and the sales, and it really made her day to hear all about it. She was just amazed. I think of her every day and how proud she would be of all of the growth.” In 2007, Lisa appeared on the Martha Stewart Show discussing the pickles. Her mother had been featured in every magazine imaginable – including Southern Living and Texas Monthly. Friends have questioned Lisa and Jake in the past about why they don’t move out to the hill country, given their businesses are there. But Lisa says, ‘09 has all the comforts of home and brings them so much joy, they could never leave. “It’s comforting to have the same familiar faces in our neighborhood that I’ve seen for almost 40 years,” she said. “I think about my coffee guy down the street and the folks at Sunset Ridge, and it just brings me comfort.” When the Obriottis aren’t busy with their business, they enjoy traveling overseas and spending time on the coast in Port Aransas. Jake also enjoys riding motorcycles, and Lisa relaxes with gardening. But their favorite thing to do always comes back to gathering with family. “We get together with the entire family for Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and when we’re all here, it’s up to 24 people,” Lisa said. “We all just really enjoy each other’s company so much. And when we’re together, it’s all about the food.”
It’s comforting to have the same familiar faces in our neighborhood that I’ve seen for almost 40 years. 78209magazine.com | JUNE 2020 19

Garage Door Safety Garages play many roles in the home. In addition to being one of the most frequently used entry points for most homeowners, they also serve as storage areas, workshops, even man caves. That’s why it’s so important to pay special attention to the garage door and

its opening system. Garage doors are the largest, heaviest moving device in most homes, but most people don’t think about them until something goes wrong. “An annual inspection by a professional can help identify a small problem and fix it before it turns
into a bigger problem,” according to Randy Oliver, president of president of Hollywood-Crawford Door Company. “Just as other systems in your home are serviced annually, garage doors should be inspected each year as well, even if they appear to be working well.”
To help San Antonio homeowners make sure their doors are in top working condition, Hollywood-Crawford Door Company is offering free, no-obligation residential garage door inspections during Garage Door Safety month this June throughout the company’s service area, which includes San Antonio, Boerne, Bulverde and New Braunfels. GARAGE DOOR SAFETY ADVICE FOR HOMEOWNERS • Remind children that the garage door and opener are not toys. This is especially important since bicycles and other larger toys are commonly stored in the garage. • Never try to “race” under a garage door that’s opening or closing. • A garage door’s springs and cables are under extreme tension and can cause severe injury or even death if handled improperly. These should be repaired only by a trained service technician.

A New Normal Emerges from Pandemic BY EDMOND ORTIZ
A
26 JUNE 2020 | 78209magazine.com
s of mid-May, select businesses have been reopening following a weeks-long lock-down caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
While businesses and cultural institutions struggle to resume services, schools and colleges remain closed, and San Antonio and Bexar County continue sticking with face masks and social distancing requirements. Alamo Heights Mayor Bobby Rosenthal said many businesses in Alamo Heights city limits had reopened with occupancy limits throughout May. “Alamo Heights has been utilizing social media reminding residents to support theses restaurants and businesses so they can survive this troubling period,” Rosenthal said. But Rosenthal added that some local businesses have chosen to remain entirely closed indefinitely because occupancy limits do not give those business owners any assurance of being able to operate profitably.
The Bark Park of Alamo Heights reopened, and the city was expected to reopen the swimming pool with limited capacity and new rules by May 30. Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills each maintained limited public access to their respective city facilities. The same goes for the city of San Antonio, which along with the county, has been criticized by state officials for imposing face mask requirements on employers and certain other public places. But San Antonio and county leaders have said they are complying with state orders and federal guidelines regarding safety measures during the outbreak. San Antonio received $270 million in federal emergency funds to offset its costs in responding locally to the pandemic. San Antonio has also set aside a $25 million program providing emergency aid to renters, homeowners, and those who need help with groceries, fuel, or utilities. “There are difficult days ahead of us, but I remain confident that we will get through this together,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said in a press release. Schools and colleges were ordered to stay closed through the end of the spring semester. Those same educational institutions are mulling how best to operate this fall. Dana Bashara, Alamo Heights Independent School District (AHISD) superintendent, praised educators, students, and parents for adapting to distance learning that all students and teachers have had to use since the abrupt closure of campuses around spring break. AHISD had not yet finalized a campus reopening plan by mid-May — that is, if the state decides to reopen schools to on-site classes. “Some of the things we’ll need to consider are alternative
scheduling to promote social distancing, as well as the set-up of classroom facilities,” Bashara said. “We’ll need to consider options around blended learning, and continued distance learning efforts to support our students. And, we will definitely be planning for the cleaning and sanitation efforts in our buildings.” The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) had disbursed more than $2 million in funds from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act by midMay to more than 4,500 current eligible students. The funds are part of the $2.6 million received by UIW from the CARES Act for direct student grants. “UIW is committed to the success of our students and recognized the opportunity to support our students financially by participating in the CARES Act,” Chief Financial Officer and Vice-President for Administrative Services Darrell Haydon said in a statement. Cultural recreational organizations in the Alamo Heights area have been re-opening or planning to re-open their doors to the public. The Witte Museum was expected to give members early access beginning May 27 and then fully reopen by May 30. San Antonio Botanical Garden reopened in early May, using a ticket reservation system to help ensure visitors’ limited capacity. Elsewhere in the area, construction projects and public assistance initiatives have been proceeding relatively unaffected by the outbreak. Cypress Real Estate Advisors have progressed with the building of the Magnolia Heights apartments at Austin Highway and Broadway. Additionally, the city’s Austin Highway/Harry Wurzbach intersection project has remained on schedule.
Some of the things we’ll need to consider are alternative scheduling to promote social distancing, as well as the set-up of classroom facilities,

CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 2020 SENIORS Living in Gratitude The spring was nothing like any of us could have ever imagined. We’ve all had to adjust to a different way of life in every aspect of our lives; how we work, how we learn, how we interact with those we care about. It’s been full of challenges and opportunities for growth for all of us. I hope that of the many things we take away from this experience, gratitude for the opportunities we have is at the top of our list. I am grateful for the plan our district put into place for our children, both the typical and neurotypical ones. I am grateful for good health. I am grateful for the dedicated teachers that provided lessons, checked in and cheered us on, students and parents alike, and encouraged us, sharing that we could do this hard work. I am most grateful for the opportunity to have a clearer view of my own children’s strengths and their areas for growth. Our kids are capable of (and do) amazing things. I appreciate the wonderful humans my children are, and are becoming. As I look around our community, I see similar strengths and growth. I am grateful for the way both our students and teachers have embraced this time of challenge to seek and craft opportunities for growth. I want each of them to know that their AH family is proud of them. —AHISD Parent, Michelle Harrison 28 JUNE 2020 | 78209magazine.com

The Class of 2020 Set to Achieve Greatness Beyond SMH Though this school year has been a challenging one for our seniors, our Saint Mary’s Hall (SMH) graduates are now off on a journey toward success in college and fulfillment in life. While it’s always difficult to say farewell, we’re excited to see our graduates go out into the world to pursue their destiny of achievement and accomplishment. In an effort to celebrate our seniors, SMH delivered specially made Class of 2020 signs and delivered one to each senior to place proudly in their yard. On May 20, the school held a parade (practicing safe social distancing) for the graduates. Seniors were invited to drive around the SMH campus for a
senior send-off from their beloved Upper School faculty, staff, and coaches. On May 24, a total of 88 seniors graduated in a very special virtual Commencement Ceremony. These exemplary students earned more than $10.5 million in merit scholarships. The class had a 100 percent acceptance rate and will attend 52 different colleges and programs across the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Just some of the impressive colleges and universities our graduates will attend include Harvard, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, New York University, Georgetown, The University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M, and Notre Dame.
SMH ensures all graduates are well prepared by familiarizing students to the college admissions process starting in Form 9. With extensive experience and a plethora of resources, the school’s dedicated, full-time college counselors helped the Class of 2020 assess their academic and personal strengths, as well as their goals and desires, to identify colleges that match their needs and are a right fit. The Class of 2020 leave SMH as articulate, confident, and perseverant young adults prepared for the next chapter in their lives. We are so proud of our graduates and look forward to their many successes in college and beyond.

Presidential Award Explore: Alamo Heights High School senior Christopher Lloyd has been named a US Presidential Scholar. One of 5,600 students that submitted the rigorous application, Lloyd was one of 161 students selected for this recognition nationally, and one of only four distinguished in Texas. The application is by invitation only. Students are invited to apply by the head of their state’s Department of Education. Lloyd, an outstanding student in his class, is ranked #2. He has been an active member of the National Honor Society, National Hispanic Honor Society, AH Rocketry , Young Men’s Service League , AHHS Tennis Team, AHHS Class Officers, AHHS Student Council, Young Republicans Club, and Young Engineers Club. Honors and awards include; National Hispanic Scholar, Presidential Volunteer Service Award, Rensselaer Medal Recipient, National Spanish Exam Gold Medal, AP Scholar with Distinction, Princeton Book Club Nominee, Young Men’s Service League Senior Leadership Award, Mission San Juan Award, Mission Concepcion Award, and the Mission Espada Award. He has gained valuable work experience alongside his diverse academic and extracurricular activities, working as an intern with the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, coauthoring and publishing an article in the journal Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, as well as serving as an AP/GT Chemistry Tutor. Lloyd will attend Duke University in the fall and plans to study and launch a career in Biomedical Engineering. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is a recognition program. Students chosen as U.S. Presidential Scholars receive an expense-paid trip to Washington, D. C. in June and are presented the U.S. Presidential Scholars medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House, in commemoration of their achievements. During their visit to Washington, Scholars have access to important national and international figures, including government officials, educators, authors, musicians, scientists and other accomplished people. Scholars are provided opportunities to: wrestle with issues that concern America and the world; attend recitals, receptions and ceremonies held in their honor; and visit area museums and monuments. But perhaps the greatest benefit to the Scholars, and the one they most often remark on, is the chance to exchange ideas with similarly motivated and accomplished peers, and to forge friendships that last a lifetime.

National certification is the highest level of distinction bestowed by Character.org. Schools receiving this designation have demonstrated excellence in establishing a school culture that exemplifies and brings to life The 11 Principles Framework for Schools: A Guide to Cultivating a Culture of Character. “We are pleased to announce and celebrate the schools and school districts who have earned this national recognition,” said Dr. Arthur Schwartz, President of Character. org. “Each of these schools and school districts has put in place a comprehensive approach to help their students understand, care about, and consistently practice the core values that will enable them to flourish in school, in relationships, in the workplace, and as citizens.” Since its inception, the National Schools of Character program has impacted nearly 3 million students, staff, parents, and community members. The schools and school districts who apply must meet the rigorous standards articulated in Character.org’s 11 Principles Framework for Schools. Each school is evaluated by a team of trained educators and includes a site visit to assess how a school’s “shared values” are motivating students to do the right thing. “These schools and school districts serve as an exemplary model for all schools and districts across the nation,” adds Lori Soifer, who directs the Schools of Character program. “The educators at these schools are inspiring their students to treat all people with respect and dignity. They are teaching their students to be honest and trustworthy, to contribute their time and talents to the common good, and when necessary, to show the courage to stand up for what is right.”

We just have a conversation!” Bella and Bonnie are a volunteer team with Pups n' Planes, where “comfort” dogs and their owners offer distressed travelers a little sugar. “People are waiting, their flight has been canceled, or they may have a four-hour wait, and they are upset.” “One time, two little girls stopped to pet the dog, and I looked up, and the mother was crying. Her husband was being deployed. I spent probably a half-hour with them, and the dad thanked me so many times because it got them thinking about other things,” Bonnie says. Airport staffers implemented the idea after learning how well it worked at the Los Angeles International Airport. Pups n' Planes has been reducing blood pressure and turning frowns upside down for six years. “In the car, she knows that we are almost at the airport. She gets so excited! Her job is to make people smile. She does that job.” And if you saw Bella, you would smile, too. The girl team also spends time at the airport USO, softening the loneliness and longing of our troops, so familiar to military life. While Bella offers kisses, Canine Explosive Detection Supervisor Sgt. Andres Lopez, and his police dog Keyno, provide safety and security. “We are there to make sure that the traveling public is safe, the dog makes that any threats associated with aviation there aren’t real threats,” says the airport K9 police officer. Lopez and Keyno “nose around," sniffing out threats that could come from a parked car, a suitcase, or a person. “Dogs are about as mobile as you can get,” says Lopez. He means the nose is mobile.
Bella is a volunteer with Pups n' Planes, the airport greeting committee. She wears her little pink coat, cheering up tired travelers at the San Antonio International Airport.

roadsides, finding them forever homes. “Although, many rescue organizations have also seen an increase in their adoption numbers, we screen adopters carefully, to ensure that we do not end up with dogs being returned after COVID-19, or worse, dumped on the streets, again,” says Juan Vasquez with Responsible Pet Owners Alliance. “We’ve adopted out puppies to families that never wanted a puppy before, because there was no time to potty train. Since they’re at home, they have time to potty train.” Vasquez also operates VUN-VEQ Rescue, an “all species” rescue, adopting out rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, cats and dogs. “Since the stay at home order came into place, we Airport therapy dogs help soothe people who may be upset because of a have had an increase of request smallflight. animals. Parents long wait, delayed orfor cancelled let their children have a guinea pig, hamster or bunny, so they can learn responsibility in caring for pets.”
San Antonio Pets Alive! has 710 animals now in foster care, a 22% increase, since last year. Olivia Schneider says it is an amazing turn of events. “Comparing adoptions from January April 2019, 2020 shows a 37.7% increase, in adoptions.” That is a lot! SAPA also added a “Cuddle Shuttle Program,” pairing fosters and volunteers, the volunteers delivering the animals, and their food to the foster’s doorstep, to avoid contact. Executive Director of the Animal Defense League of Texas San Antonio Joel McLellan reports not one case of COVID-19, among their staff. “On March 13th, we enacted our ADL shelter preparedness plan, to continue our operations, in some capacity.” They’ve been following City of San Antonio pandemic guidelines, to a T. “We increased reserves of things such as latex gloves, syringes, and bolstered our inventory for a three months supply,” says McLellan, who has worked in large volume food retail management. “We did not access those reserves, and we continued ordering, in anticipation of a supply chain disruption.” While we ran around looking for toilet paper, they had tons of paper towels, vital to operations their size. Being prepared means that the shelter has been able to do its job: offer healthy pets to those who want them. “We also suspended foot traffic, but you can view the animals online. Then, you can make an online appointment, to come see an animal at our campus.” “We know that the community is moving towards e-commerce.” Pets are inputted into their database, which is linked to their website. Website traffic has doubled. “We take two appointments an hour,” he says. “We have a 12-acre open-air campus.” New owners and pups meet in the great, safe, outdoors. Such an overabundance of caution means a 20% increase in adoptions at the Animal Defense League, in March and April. Not one worker, has been let go. But why else, aside from being at home, are more people becoming pet parents? McLellan and pet market analysts agree: in this time of emotional need, with self-isolation and social distancing, animals fill a void. “In time of crisis, people ask: who is caring for the animals? Who is taking care of the animals, in all of this uncertainty? And people found the need for something positive in their life,” he says. But if adoption rates are up, dollars are down, as fundraisers go dark. “We had to postpone our annual gala, at the end of March.” So, they collected a few bucks, from a vast pool of supporters. ADL also helps other shelters, taking in their overflow, getting those pets adopted. The shelter’s pandemic preparedness plan is available to all shelters, to help them manage, in this “Love in the Time of COVID-19.”

New Alamo Heights High School Principal, Cory Smith is looking forward to coming home.

AHISD Welcomes New High School Principal Cory Smith Returns Home to Texas BY: RON EISENBERG
lamo Heights newly appointed high school principal, Cory Smith, is coming home to Texas. She was born in San Antonio in 1976 but moved to South Florida with her family when she was five-years-old. And that’s where she grew up and went on to embrace a career in teaching. But like many Texans before her, she’s coming home to the Lone Star State. And she told 78209 Magazine she is very excited about that. For those who may be wondering, Smith is bilingual. There’s just a slight hint of an accent as she speaks, but she proudly told me she considers herself part Mexican and Peruvian. And now, all Texan. Unfortunately, her mom died on February 26, 2020. Her dad is living in San Antonio, along with some family members. She says, “I went to the memorial service and reconnected with family; we’re a huge family. “It felt like it was time for me to come home, to come back home to family.” She learned there was an opening for the high school principal. A firm believer in how everything happens for a reason, Smith applied for the position. 38 JUNE 2020 | 78209magazine.com
“I’d worked in the high school world for 16 years as a teacher and administrator. It was as if my mom was looking out for me – helping to bring me home to Texas. She would have wanted me there with family.” Perhaps her desire to come home to Texas was also a reaction to the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. On February 14, 2018, a gunman opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle killing 17 people and injuring 17 others. Witnesses identified the gunman as a 19-yearold former student at the school. Smith had taught at the school. Her husband, who was also a teacher, knew several of those killed. Neither was on campus the day of the shooting. “The MSD tragedy forever changed our district, our
community, and the way we as leaders think about school safety. I was not there when it happened; I was already a principal at Ramblewood Middle School, but because I worked there for seven years and my school is less than 5 miles away, it was all too close to home. My husband taught elementary PE at two of MSD’s feeder schools, so he had taught 5 of the 17 victims, from kindergarten through 5th grade. “I had also worked with Aaron Feis, the MSD assistant football coach, who was shot and killed that awful day while he protected and saved the lives of many students. Attending his funeral was very emotional.” Smith says, “I immediately felt a tremendous sense of responsibility to keep my students and my school community safe. While there have been safety and security measures taken district-wide, I made a few changes right away, including adding a buzzer system with cameras to enter through our single point of entry, window coverings around campus so students can see out but others cannot see into the school, and additional security posts for our staff, to ensure we had eyes and ears in as many spots on campus as possible. “Safety is definitely a high priority for me as a school leader. Our students, families, and staff deserve to feel safe coming to our schools. I will certainly bring what I have learned from this tragedy as well as from my experiences as a school leader in a large district to Alamo Heights so that we, as a school community, can work together for the collective safety and security of all.” AHISD Superintendent Dr. Dana Bashara told 78209 Magazine, “Cory places a high priority on building and nurturing strong relationships with her students and staff, and she is an exceptional instructional leader with expertise in secondary curriculum and instruction. Her leadership will have such a positive impact at AHHS.” “Her energy is contagious- and her passion for education and her love of all- things high school will make such a difference for our students.” Bashara added, “I love that she is coming back home to Texas to serve our AHISD community.” Smith earned her Master of Education (M.Ed.), Educational Leadership and Administration from Florida Atlantic University and her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), English Literature from Florida State University. She and her husband, David Antonio Smith, were married in 1999. They met as students at FSU. They have two children – Cole, 10 years old, and David, 16, as well as a 6-year-old male Shihtzu, named Chewy. “He’s a rescue that we adopted two years ago because my boys really wanted a dog, and my younger son Cole has always been a dog whisperer! He loves dogs, and they love him, although Chewy is very attached to my husband and me.” Smith is hoping students and teachers can return to their classrooms when school begins again in August. But she notes we’re preparing for whatever contingencies occur, including virtual, distance learning. “We’ve gone from the Flintstones to the Jetsons overnight. And we can do it again if need be.” “Whatever happens, I am thrilled to be joining the AHISD community, and I am beyond excited to be the new principal of Alamo Heights High School. I look forward to meeting our students and families, faculty and staff, and community of stakeholders. Together, we will take AHHS to new heights! I cannot wait to “Throw My Mules Up” with our entire school and community!”

“L&L Brings the Luau to ‘09” BY MEREDITH KAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY AL RENDON
46 JUNE 2020 | 78209magazine.com
I
f you have ever been to an authentic Hawaiian luau, you know what a grand spectacle it is. You will be enchanted by the dancing, island music, and theatrics, but the star of the show is always the food. Hawaiian cuisine is a unique fusion of the flavors of Asia, the Pacific Islands, and America. Now you can satisfy your island cravings with authentic Hawaiian food at L&L Hawaiian Grill, located on Austin Highway at Vandiver. Sarah Yee, a native of Guam, decided to open L&L Hawaiian Grill on the advice of her family, who had come to San Antonio many years ago. They were unable to find great island food, so they convinced her to combine her years of restaurant experience with the love of her culture and open a neighborhood place, unlike any other. Although Yee has an extensive background running corporate restaurant chains, now all of her energy is focused on bringing the delicious cuisine of the Pacific Islands to Alamo Heights. The origin of Hawaiian cuisine can be traced to the sugar cane plantations in Hawaii, where migrant workers from Asia, America, and other cultures would come together for shared lunches. Each family would bring foods of their native lands and share them with the others, blending the flavors and using the ingredients on hand to create meals that would feed many people. This history also embodies the true “aloha” spirit of community and kindness. Aloha translates to “the breath of life,” and it is in this spirit that Yee and her dynamic staff will welcome you to L&L Hawaiian Grill with their friendly and gracious service. You will find quite a diverse menu at L&L, and they are well known for their Hawaiian barbecue, featuring “sweet soy marinated meats grilled to perfection and cooked to order.” The portions are very large, and the menu features everything from traditional Hawaiian grilled meat platters served with white rice and macaroni salad, to rice bowls with pulled Kalua pork. You will also find a selection of burgers and ramen bowls. There is even a Ramen Burger with grilled ramen noodles that make up the bun. However, one of the most unique items served is the L&L Musubi.
Musubi is a Hawaiian staple and comfort food made up of grilled SPAM and white rice wrapped in seaweed, a sort of Hawaiian sushi. The menu offers many breaded and fried entrées, like their extremely popular Chicken Katsu and fish and shrimp plates. If you are craving a large dish of pure protein, then I dare you to challenge yourself to order the Loco Moco Plate. It features two quarter-pound beef hamburger patties slathered in a savory brown gravy and topped with two fried eggs, and is served with a heaping portion of white rice and macaroni salad. The restaurant offers catering, take-out, and delivery, and once a month on a Friday, from February through October, L&L hosts their “Luau Friday” events in their parking lot. These are family-friendly events featuring traditional Hawaiian music, hula dancing, and much aloha spirit. Guests are invited to bring their lawn chairs and enjoy the entertainment while dining on authentic Hawaiian favorites. You won’t be able to experience the breeze blowing off the Pacific Ocean, and palm trees swaying to the ukulele music, but with a little imagination, you can get a feel for the island life. Sarah states that she doesn’t hire just anyone to work at L&L Hawaiian Grill and that she is grateful for her team. Each employee must embody that friendly, welcoming hospitality that it is uniquely Hawaiian. She says, “We work hard to serve the aloha spirit at L&L. It is a lifestyle where you love yourself so that it overflows into all aspects of life, and how you treat others.” This feeling is evident when you walk through the door, and you are greeted with a warm, “Aloha” and a smile, as the intoxicating aromas of Hawaiian barbecue assault your senses, drawing you in further for a one of a kind culinary experience.
