Editor’s Letter

August Back to School August is here and that means back to school or off to college for many and lots of new beginnings. My favorite part as a child and as a mom was back to school shopping for new clothes, shoes and school supplies. For some lucky kids, back to school means opening their first bank account and learning how to manage their money. There’s a local bank that has been helping people do just that for 80 years. Broadway Bank opened its doors in February, 1941 at the corner of Broadway and Cleveland. In 1968 they relocated and opened the main branch at Nacogdoches and Loop 410. This year, with 60 branches in central Texas, they are celebrating their 80th anniversary of focusing on and serving the community. Their hometown hospitality and customer service has been a major reason for their success through the years. Sometimes our friends know us better than we know ourselves and this was the case for John & Margo McCaleb. Their friends who knew them, thought they’d be a perfect match and they were right. Now more than 41 years later they’ve built a wonderful life together with two more generations coming up behind them. Raising their children in Terrell Hills, they have experienced the blessings of living in such a supportive community. We’d be hard pressed to find many people in 78209 who haven’t eaten at Twin Sisters Bakery & Café in Sunset Ridge Shopping Center. They have customers who have eaten with them since they opened. The sisters attribute their longevity to an excellent location and consistent food. I was there not too long ago and the chicken salad tasted exactly the same as it did 30 years ago, delicious! For many, September means back to crazy schedules with lots of extra-curricular activities, car pools, and homework. If we learned anything from this last year and a half, it is the importance of slowing down and “taking time to smell the roses.” Commit to doing one thing per day as a family; something as simple as everyone sitting down to have a meal together. There’s no time like family time and that’s what your kids will remember most!

In 1909, before the existence of Cambridge Elementary School, a two-room wooden frame building was built on Townsend Avenue as part of a rural county district. A new school building of masonry was later constructed on the site that is now Cambridge Elementary School. In 1923, just one year after the high school building was added to the growing campus, the Alamo Heights system became an independent school district of 300 students. While the hub of activity for Alamo Heights students centered at Cambridge until the 1950’s, the district branched out into the neighboring community at the former cement plant near Jones-Maltsberger Road, also called “Cementville.” Known as the “Bluebonnet School, “ the Alamo Heights School served children whose parents worked at the plant. Today, Alamo Heights Independent School District covers 9.4 square miles and serves students from Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, Olmos Park, and a portion of north San Antonio.

In the Loop Botanical Garden to Unveil Magical Light Display BY RON AARON EISENBERG

It’s called Lightscape, and it will be San Antonio’s newest holiday event beginning November 19, 2021, at the San Antonio Botanical Garden. Guests will experience magical light displays set along a beautifully illuminated one-mile path. The show will include installations unique to Texas, created by local and international artists. Emily Knapp, marketing director at the Garden, told 78209 Magazine, “We wanted to bring in the event because of the high production values. Plus,” she added, “It’s an honor to be chosen to work with Sony Productions. We were one of only four gardens chosen this year for this display. The others are the LA Arboretum, Houston Botanical Gardens, and The Brooklyn Botanical Garden.” The light trail will feature a oneof-a-kind experience blending new works, including a field of Texas bluebonnets and the remarkable Cathedral of Light, an impressive towering cathedral arch tunnel sparkling with 100,000 lights. In addition to the captivating light displays, guests will have an opportunity to enjoy festive food and drinks, including roasting s’mores. The trail has been designed to keep guest safety in mind and will include limited capacity per timeslot and a one-way path with a separate entrance and exit. Lightscape runs until January 2, 2022. Knapp said, “This event routinely sells out in other cities, so guests are encouraged to purchase tickets early. The event is generously sponsored by the John R. and Greli N. Less Charitable Trust. It is produced in association with Sony Music and WAD Entertainment, creatively produced by Culture Creative. 14 AUGUST 2021 | 78209magazine.com

Zoo Welcomes Baby Blue Duiker San Antonio Zoo Animal Care Specialists recently welcomed a baby blue duiker to the Big Cat Valley area of the zoo. Animal Care Specialists named the baby Viazi, otherwise known as “potato” in Swahili. Blue duikers are a small species of forest-dwelling antelopes found in central, eastern, and southern Africa. The calf is the fourth born to parents, Stumpy and Kate, who previously had calves in 2014, 2015, and 2017. Blue duikers weigh up to 20 pounds as full-grown adults. The blue is named for the color their fur appears in the dense forest shade, and duiker is an Afrikaans word for “diving buck,” which describes its behavior in the forest as it dives into bush and brush undergrowth. Blue duikers are on the Species Survival Plan and have a conservation status listed as Least Concern. San Antonio Zoo says it has a long history of working to preserve species worldwide.

In the Loop New Museum Townhomes Offer Urban Living

Nine new townhomes by developer Victor Andonie are nestled behind Chipotle Grille, across from the Witte Museum, at the corner of Carnahan and Catalpa in 78209. Andonie told 78209 Magazine, “We had owned that land for some time before we decided what we wanted to do with the property.” The answer – build nine one-bedroom, one-anda-half-bath townhomes with adjacent covered parking. Rather than a garage, the homes feature a “flex-space,” which could be used as a gym, bedroom, office, or family room. The 1,240 square foot homes are priced at $345,000. Andonie said he is looking for young professionals and some investors who could rent to students at UIW, Trinity, and other area colleges and universities. As of this writing, four of the units have already been sold. Among his other projects in San Antonio, Andonie developed Green Heights behind the Home Depot on Sandalwood with home builder Juan Fernandez. 16 AUGUST 2021 | 78209magazine.com

any people don’t give much thought to the bank they entrust to safeguard their hard-earned money. It’s a relationship that some of us just take for granted. We expect that the financial institutions we choose to do business with will always be solid, and for the most part, that is true. However, most of us don’t know how our banks came to be the trusted community partners they strive to be. Do you know the history behind your bank? Do you entrust your income, investments, and savings to a local institution, or do you bank with a national company because they happen to have a branch on the corner in your neighborhood?

There are several banks that originated right here in San Antonio. A House Full of Happy Chaos BY MEREDITH KAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY AL RENDON 22 AUGUST 2021 | 78209magazine.com

Y

ou can hear the happy chaos at the McCaleb house even as you enter the gate to the front yard. There are loud voices, laughter, and children’s squeals, along with the excited barking of Jack, the newest member of the McCaleb clan.

Inside, the large family occupies every inch of their beautiful Terrell Hills home. It’s a little overwhelming at first, but once the introductions are complete, the personalities start to unfold. John McCaleb is the very friendly and outgoing patriarch of the family, and his beautiful wife Margo is quite the interior decorator. She tells me that the house is undergoing a redecorating project, and there are several unique art pieces scattered about, just waiting for Margo to find them a new home. John is a Partner Emeritus and founder at Catto & Catto, offering risk management, insurance solutions, and benefits packages to businesses and individuals. This San Antonio-based company has grown substantially over the past 30 years, and it is well respected in the industry. John was born and raised in San Antonio and graduated from Alamo Heights High School. Margo was born in Illinois but moved to town when she was only two years old and eventually attended McArthur High School. The two met through mutual friends who thought they would be perfect for each other, and it turns out that their friends were right. They have been married for 41 years, and together they have four children and six grandchildren, and they have lived in their current home on Garraty Road for over 32 years. Their oldest son, Chad, runs a multi-family telecommunications consulting firm, and he is married to Amanda, who works as a realtor locally. Chad and Amanda live in San Antonio and have two children. Their son Vaden is a rambunctious 2-year-old, and their daughter, Olivia, is nine months old. Their daughter, Julie Friedman, and her husband, Kerr, have four children, Evie (8), Kerr (6), Rhett (4), and the baby, Sadler, is also nine months old. The family lives in Houston, where Kerr works in oil and gas investments. Julie is quite the entrepreneur and runs a unique company called Young + Wild & Friedman. When their oldest child, Evie, was diagnosed at an early age with a speech disorder and anxiety, Julie started a blog to offer advice to other parents struggling to find ways to calm their children’s anxiety and encourage language development. This blog then turned into a dynamic company that now sells sensory toy kits and sensory playdough for children with speech disorders and anxiety. John and Margo’s younger son, Jeffrey, is a Doctor of

Physical Therapy, and he is married to Amber, a child psychologist. They live in San Antonio as well. Rounding out the McCaleb tribe is the youngest daughter, Terrell. She lives in Austin, where she runs a luxury event company called Elle Fête with a partner. The company offers event planning and design for events in San Antonio and Austin. Her fiancé, Connor Flanigan, is an account manager for General Mills working with HEB. They are planning to get married this fall. The family loves their Terrell Hills community, and Margo states, “This is such a loving and supportive community, where neighbors come together to celebrate one another and to be there for each other.” Since the couple has lived in the same house for so long, they have become very entrenched in the community. Margo tells the story of how her neighbors, and the community, rallied around them when Jeffrey was just three years old and diagnosed with Leukemia. She says, “We had neighbors who would mow our yard for us and bring us dinner while we cared for our son. This community really comes to the rescue for each other when you need them. Whether times are good or bad, everyone here will celebrate with you and also mourn with you. We feel very blessed to live here.” As the family moved about during their photoshoot, babies were passed around, children chased each other through the house, brothers teased each other, and the puppy made himself comfortable wherever he went. Still, even amidst the chaos, you could feel the love in the house. John and Margo McCaleb have been blessed with a beautiful life, and together they have created a legacy that will continue for many generations to come.

This community really comes to the rescue for each other when you need them.

Neighborhood News Local Communities and Neighborhood Association Host July 4th Celebrations BY RON AARON EISENBERG

26 AUGUST 2021 | 78209magazine.com

Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, and Olmos Park all hosted July 4th parades and celebrations to mark the nation’s birthday. The Terrell Hills and Alamo Heights parades took place on Saturday, July 3. Olmos Park’s community parade was held on Sunday, July 4. Terrell Hills police chief Roger Mangum told 78209 Magazine, “Despite a five-minute rain delay, the 2021 Terrell Hills 4th of July parade got off to a great start, marking the first time since the pandemic that the festivities were held. The crowd was estimated to be 700-800 people. It appeared that everyone was glad to have some normalcy. Added to the festivities this year were live music performances.” The popular Oak Park Northwood Neighborhood Association July 4th parade returned this year after a COVID-19 pandemic hiatus last year. As always, the parade began at the Northwood Presbyterian Church on Pike. It wound its way through the adjoining neighborhood and then back to the church. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar and his Mounted Deputies joined in this year’s parade, as did Bexar County Precinct 3 Commissioner Trish DeBerry, State Representative Steve Allison, San Antonio City Councilman Clayton Perry, and Pct. 3 Constable Mark Vojvodich. An estimated 700 people turned out for the parade. Similarly, the 51st annual Alamo Heights July 4th parade was well attended, with an estimated 900 people spread along the parade route. The parade kicked off at 10:00 a.m. and began at Estes & Patterson. It ended at the Cathedral Park, 111 Torcido Drive, 78209, a nineteenacre property which was the former estate of San Antonio businessman Godchaeux Halff, who died in 1950. The park is currently the home of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas.

Neighborhood News Alamo Heights Names Two New Senior Execs

Alamo Heights City Manager Buddy Kuhn recently filled two top jobs with the city. Kuhn appointed Phil Laney Assistant City Manager and Lety Hernandez Director of Community Development Services. As the new Assistant City Manager, Laney oversees the Public Works, Community Development, and Human Resources departments. He is 36-years old. Before joining the City of Alamo Heights, Laney served the City of San Antonio for over ten years. Most recently, he served as a senior projects manager with Development Services - Code Enforcement section. He oversaw program development & execution for citywide inspection programs for mobile living parks, boarding homes, emergency declaration enforcement related to COVID-19 mitigation measures, and graffiti abatement. He earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of Kansas and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Central Arkansas. Laney and his wife Amy, a kindergarten teacher, have two young daughters, Caroline and Hazel. He spends his free time hiking, running, being outdoors, and sharing those passions with his family. When asked why he chose public service as a career, Laney explained, “Public service is the ability to make a positive impact on individual people’s lives. My parents are both retired teachers, and my wife is a teacher. I saw and see the difference that they could make on people directly and indirectly. The experience I had as a summer camp counselor in college helping kids with disabilities see a world where they can do just as much as their peers influenced me significantly. The local government felt like the most direct and effective way to share that public service value while also seeing and feeling the difference it can make in a community, a neighborhood, and an individual. “He added, “The move to Alamo Heights offered me an opportunity to expand how I can contribute to a professional organization and serve the community.” 28 AUGUST 2021 | 78209magazine.com

In her role as director of community development services, Lety Hernandez is primarily responsible for managing the building process for projects from the beginning (preliminary plan review meetings, plats, rezoning, variances, ARB and City Council review), through development (plan review and permitting), and completion (all inspections, including finals and certificates of occupancy). In addition, her department is responsible for code compliance and enforcement of building and related codes. Hernandez, 46, attended San Antonio and St. Phillip’s Colleges. She started her career in public service with the city of San Antonio in 2003. She has been with the City of Alamo Heights for 17 years. Hernandez told 78209 Magazine, “I feel as if I was meant to be here. It is where I belong.” She wasn’t sure she was qualified to oversee community development services when the director position opened up. The city manager Buddy Kuhn asked her about the job opening. She said, “If Buddy had not approached me, I’m not sure I would have applied for the position. But his thinking I was capable is what probably put me here. Once Buddy talked to me about it, I figured I could learn what I didn’t know.” Hernandez has that can-do attitude and is one of those people who is not afraid to tackle new responsibilities. She knows she can learn whatever it is she needs to know to do the job right. She is also committed to delivering excellent customer service. Hernandez says, “I’ve always enjoyed working with the public. When you come here, I want it to be a positive experience.” When not at work, she enjoys singing. She also likes to embroider. “During the summers, that’s what I would do with my mom.” She enjoys drawing. Hernandez has two daughters, Aimeé (18) and Celeste (12). She also has two sons and, she’s a grandmother. Her sons are Oswaldo (27), father to Noah, and Omar (25), father to twin girls Marley & Malory.

Spotlight On Fannie Thomas

Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend BY SALLIE LEWIS Fannie Thomas

S

an Antonio designer Fannie Thomas knows a thing or two about jewelry. After graduating from Texas Christian University with a degree in Advertising and Graphic Design, she pursued her passion of jewelry design at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in New York City. There, she completed the institution’s prestigious Graduate Gemologist Program.

While living in New York, Fannie worked under the tutelage of renowned jewelry atelier Julius Cohen, where she fell in love with the art of fine jewelry making. From polishing to carving and cleaning castings, she learned many of her skills from the brightest in the industry while working on the atelier’s revered benches. These days, in a market where mass-produced, machine-made goods seem increasingly commonplace, Fannie’s commitment to the handmade and quality craftsmanship is a welcome change of pace. She keeps that tradition alive at Fannie Thomas Fine Jewelry, which she first founded in 2013 under the name of Lewis & Heard Designs. Today, the designer runs her growing business from her hometown of San Antonio, where she lives with her husband, Clayton, her two young sons, Wells and Charlie, and their Labrador Retriever, Indigo. Last year, she launched a complete rebrand, unveiling a new logo, an updated website, and fresh packaging. Furthermore, she continues to offer both an affordable, every day fashion line and a fine jewelry collection filled with specially made investment pieces. The former is comprised of natural elements, like horn, bone, and sterling silver, with sweet motifs inspired by nature, be it ceramic ladybugs or gilded honeybees, for example. The designer believes

jewelry should be personal, and she has enjoyed customizing these pieces over the years with ranch brands and monograms along with meaningful motifs that reflect the client’s unique story. Most recently, Fannie has been focused on expanding her fine jewelry collection which is both polished and playful. The designer draws inspiration from the ancient symbolism of gemstones and her extensive travels abroad, along with Mother Nature, whose shapes and colors are reflected in her designs, be it leaves carved of lavender amethyst or slices of dendritic agate paired with South Sea pearls. Since founding her collection eight years ago, the San Antonio native has grown her brand and expanded her reach, and she has no plans of slowing down. In addition to raising her family and running her business, she continues to help her clientele with wide-ranging needs, from making custom engagement rings to reworking and creating priceless heirlooms for generations to come. “This industry is so special because it allows you to be a part of such intimate moments in people’s lives,” said Fannie. “To be able to do that in my hometown is a dream come true.” Shop online at https://www. fanniethomas.com/ and follow Fannie on Instagram at @fannie_thomas_ fine_jewelry

Building From God’s Blueprints Our world, our nation needs rebuilding.

A great builder builds from the blueprints designed by a great architect. God is the universal architect who entrusts us with His blueprints by which we can build our lives and the world we live in. We forget this truth at our own peril. So it was that the prophet Ezekiel (587+ B.C.) was called to stand in the gap when his world was in a similar crisis as ours. God then spoke to him in various ways, including visions. What God showed Ezekiel became the blueprints by which the future could be spiritually and physically rebuilt. Ezekiel stood in the gap to reconnect people with a heartfelt desire to build with God’s blueprints. PRAYER: Lord, what is our gap to close? Show us where we can stand for You. Keep us open to messages from You, the Architect of our life. Above all, shape our hearts so that our lives will honor You. Amen. Les Hollon, PhD Senior Pastor

SMH BIOLOGY STUDENTS EXPERIENCE TRIP OF A LIFETIME AND EARN CREDIT

This summer, Saint Mary’s Hall (SMH) biology students had the opportunity to participate in the 2021 Marine Science Trip, which led them to the picturesque Big Island of Hawaii. A total of 28 seniors and 13 juniors spent two weeks on the island after completing 80 academic hours of Marine Science as well as four hours of Hawaiian Studies. Not only does the trip, offered every two years, involve enriching, fun activities and excursions, students also receive a semester’s worth of Macrobiology credit. The students stayed in dorms at Hawaii Preparatory Academy in Waimea, Hawaii, while being taught by local Marine Science teachers. They received instruction in the classroom and then headed out to do their labs. Labs consisted of snorkeling/diving to identify coral and fish, fish feeding, marine organisms, identifying dangerous organisms, getting into tidal pools, and examining beaches and waves. Though scuba dives will not be a part of future trips to Hawaii, this year, 22 of the SMH students who attended 32 AUGUST 2021 | 78209magazine.com

the trip are PADI Certified Divers; these students were able to conduct some of their labs during four dive trips. Divers participated in the Manta Ray Night Dive (listed as the #6 dive in the world) while snorkelers experienced a Night Manta Ray Snorkel. The learning opportunity also involved Hawaiian Studies, including Hawaiian history, myths, and legends; learning the hula, and making leis, taught by a local Hawaiian instructor. The group toured many places on the island, such as Mo’okini Heiau (Hawaiian temple), Hapuna Beach, Waipio Valley Overlook, Laupahoehoe Point, Akaka & Rainbow Falls, and Volcano National Park. “Having the opportunity to take a Marine Biology course in Hawaii where I could see firsthand the animals that we were studying through the course truly enriched my experience because I was genuinely studying organisms in the field to earn a credit, instead of just taking another class,” said Patrick Lang, an SMH junior.

School News AHHS’S 2020 ROCKET CLEARED FOR LAUNCH

Alamo Heights High School rocketry students were excited to have the opportunity to launch their 2020 rocket at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) at the end of June. Their rocket, weighing in at 390 pounds, one of the lightest vehicles ever built at AHHS. The team shared that they took the body down from 10 diameters to a trim eight and loaded a payload of a petri dish containing penicillin in the nose cone to test how atmospheric pressure affects it. The students were beyond excited, and their teacher, Colin Lang, shared just how amazing it was to complete a rocket of this size and capacity in a year of a pandemic. Fittingly, the

students have named the rocket the “Lone Survivor” as it was the only rocket to be completed in 2020. The team departed June 24, with a launch window of June 26-27. Along with only two other Texas high school teams participating in the highest level of SystemsGo rocketry, the team successfully launched their rocket on June 26. Lang, shared, “The Alamo Heights vehicle had a successful launch off the rail, but at ignition, the fuel grain dropped out of the bottom of the rocket. The vehicle went up to about 500 feet, but with no fuel, it could not travel much further.” The crew shared it was an easy recovery that would allow continued learning in 2021.

MEALS FOR SHIELDS Alamo Heights ISD continues the Meals for Shields program during the 2021-2022 school year. This program provides a free, nutritious meal to any officer willing to sit down and eat lunch with students while visiting district elementary schools. The program is designed to allow students to see officers as role models, offer students early relationships with police, and let them get to know officers as people. It also helps that more officers on campuses will act as a deterrent, which improves school safety. 34 AUGUST 2021 | 78209magazine.com

“The kids need to know that the officers are their friends. We want to make them feel safe, and we want them to come to us when they have a question or a problem,” said one Alamo Heights police officer. If an officer wants to participate, they must be in uniform when they check in at the front office. After that, they will head to the cafeteria, enter the lunch line with the students and eat with them.

their phone. We just have a conversation!” Bella and Bonnie are a volunteer team with Pups n' Planes, where “comfort” dogs and their owners offer distressed travelers a little sugar. “People are waiting, their flight has been canceled, or they may have a four-hour wait, and they are upset.” “One time, two little girls stopped to pet the dog, and I looked up, and the mother was crying. Her husband was being deployed. I spent probably a half-hour with them, and the dad thanked me so many times because it got them thinking about other things,” Bonnie says. Airport staffers implemented the idea after learning how well it worked at the Los Angeles International Airport. Pups n' Planes has been reducing blood pressure and turning frowns upside down for six years. “In the car, she knows that we are almost at the airport. She gets so excited! Her job is to make people smile. She does that job.” And if you saw Bella, you would smile, too. The girl team also spends time at the airport USO, softening the loneliness and longing of our troops, so familiar to military life. While Bella offers kisses, Canine Explosive Detection Supervisor Sgt. Andres Lopez, and his police dog Keyno, provide safety and security. “We are there to make sure that the traveling public is safe, the dog makes that any threats associated with aviation there aren’t real threats,” says the airport K9 police officer. Lopez and Keyno “nose around," sniffing out threats that could come from a parked car, a suitcase, or a person. “Dogs are about as mobile as you can get,” says Lopez. He means the nose is mobile.

ODD COUPLES! Bella is a volunteer with Pups n' Planes, the airport greeting committee. She wears her little pink coat, cheering up tired travelers at the San Antonio International Airport.

BEHIND THE SHIELD

Serving San Antonio since 1889

Every day, many live at or below the poverty line to make ends meet. A thin line of almost enough and nothing at all can disappear overnight. We are here for the most vulnerable in our community. Thanks to you when you give to The Salvation Army. Your donation helps fund programs that provide basic necessities such as food, safe shelter, hot meals, warm beds, rent, utility assistance, and so much more.

The PBS Nature documentary, ”Animal Odd Couples” quoted zoologists who noted that: “Endearing interactions between a cheetah and a retriever, a lion and a coyote, a dog and a deer, a goat and a horse, and even a tortoise and a goose offer captivating glimpses of supportive connections in the animal world.” They observed that in the animal kingdom, there exists compassion, and compassion exists because it brings creatures together to support one another’s survival. “Each interspecies pair challenges the conventional wisdom that humans are the only species capable of feeling compassion and forming long-lasting friendships,” said the zoologists. Richardson says this compassion is evident among animals, for example, when chimps assist each other with babysitting and grooming. I saw a documentary where a mother tiger still hunted to feed her two teenage sons, though they were as big and strong as she was! So, complex emotions belong to other mammals, and not just humans. Richardson adds that many animals also enjoy playing together, batting about balls, or roughhousing. “I saw a show with an icebreaking ship down in Antarctica. A seal jumped into the water and swam to the boat. Some guys threw a ball, and the seal swam to it, retrieved it, and threw it back to them. All it wanted to do was interact and play, even though it probably had never even seen a human before. This has to be innate.” “We live in a time when we realize how important animals are to our physical and mental well-being,” says Richardson. And those odd animal couples also seem to realize how important that they are to each other. Until next month! Woof, woof, Roxie

Iconic Bakery Café’s Success is All in the Family BY MEREDITH KAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY AL RENDON

46 AUGUST 2021 | 78209magazine.com

S

tatistically, nearly 80% of restaurants fail within the first five years of business. It is one of the most challenging industries to succeed in, and there are so many factors that determine that success. However, for one area restaurant, success has been a way of life for a pair of sisters for 40 years now.

Twin Sisters Bakery + Café is located in the Sunset Ridge Shopping Center on North New Braunfels. It still serves delicious, homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, and baked goods to loyal customers every day. Carol Pearcy and her sister, Pat Stein have called San Antonio home for most of their lives, and they are at the helm of this successful neighborhood restaurant. The name comes from Pat and her twin sister, Priscilla, who opened the café in Olmos Park 40 years ago. They were both working in the foodservice industry and decided that they wanted to open a friendly café serving healthy menu options. Priscilla now lives in Arkansas, but this cozy café still operates on the same principles that have made it a neighborhood staple for so many years. Carol runs the Front of the House, welcoming guests and serving customers at the counter. Pat mainly stays in the kitchen, cooking, baking, and ensuring the food maintains the same delicious consistency for which Twin Sisters has always been known. The family grew up on the Northwest side of town, and the girls attended Holmes High School. But, they believed that location would be the secret to the restaurant’s success, so they decided to set their culinary sights on the Alamo Heights area, where neighbors are loyal to their local establishments. When Carol was asked what she feels is the secret to staying in business for 40 years, she states, “The key is having a great location and serving dishes that stay consistent. Customers know what to expect when they come here, and we have customers that still come in who have been with us since we opened.” Today, both Carol and Pat live in the neighborhood as well, and together they strive to continue

their Twin Sisters legacy with the freshest food made in-house. The menu features healthy and delicious options like their very popular Tortilla Soup and their salad selections customized with toppers and homemade dressings. The restaurant is also known for its variety of vegetarian options, like their huge Vegetable Sauté, served with seasonal vegetables sautéed with minced ginger over natural brown rice, and their flavorful Black Bean Chalupas served on whole wheat flour tortillas. Twin Sisters is a neighborhood favorite for their sandwiches as well. One of their most popular menu items is the BAT. It’s a turbocharged BLT with bacon, avocado, tomato, and leaf lettuce served on Bakery Lorraine stoneground whole wheat or parmesan cheese toast. They also offer gluten-free bread on request. All of their sandwiches can be ordered as a half or a whole, and they are served with potato chips. The restaurant is open seven days a week, serving breakfast, lunch, and brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Takeout orders are big business here, and so are their outstanding baked goods, especially their sweet potato muffins and their very popular Spanish almond cake, which is made with almond flour and is naturally gluten-free. Pair this with some fresh-squeezed lemonade, and you’ve got the perfect afternoon snack to round out a healthy lunch. The restaurant has a cozy and eclectic vibe with funky artwork and Kilroy”esque” pictures of the Beatles staring at you.
