Editor’s Letter
March Happy Spring! Some years the seasons don’t seem to change, but this year I think we’ll all agree we had a winter! The unexpected snow was a nice surprise until our water and power went out. Someone coined the perfect term for this winter and that was SNOVID. Thanks to those of you who provided fun snow pictures for this issue. This month’s Business Profile is about two men who met as teenagers at Central Catholic High School. Twenty years later, they reconnected and started a small business that has become one of the most soughtafter cyber security and IT document handlers in the country. And their headquarters is right here in the neighborhood. Brad and Addie Bowen are the neighbors I want you to meet. Both Trinity grads, they married and moved away for a time but decided that San Antonio was where they wanted to be. Now with three sons and their own business, they live in Alamo Heights and spend as much time as possible outdoors. Who loves chocolate chip cookies? Order Up in Lincoln Heights has become famous for theirs. I am a connoisseur of chocolate chip cookies and I can attest to the fact that they are the best I’ve ever eaten. They now ship them all over the country. But, that’s not all they have. The best way to describe the Order Up menu is that they have options. Delicious burgers, pizzas and tacos are their specialties. They serve breakfast tacos and breakfast pizzas that are out of this world. The burgers are my personal favorite. I try a different one every time I go and I haven’t been disappointed yet! Now that Governor Abbott has opened up the state and lifted the mask mandate, it’ll be interesting to see where that takes us. While we’re still in the midst of everything, kindness and understanding will take us a long way, recognizing that some of us will still want to wear a mask and some won’t and that’s ok. We’re all in this together and there is light at the end of the tunnel.

The Saunders family has enjoyed the Judson Nature Trails for three generations. Pictured on the cover, William Preston “Dos” Saunders II, his grandfather Bill Saunders and Cuttlas (the dog). They walk the Judson nature Trails at least once a week and are grateful of all the clean-up efforts and the recent improvements that have been made to the trails. The canopy of large cottonwood, oak, hackberry, elm and pecan trees provide a shaded nature trail that is enjoyed by many who walk, jog, or ride their bikes. The trails are designated as “easy walking” so they are perfect for entire family. The woodland trails allow for wildlife viewing year-round. Local scouts have worked to improve the trails. At the entrance to the trails, there is a small pavilion with window displays and a bird checklist for posting current sightings. Red-shouldered Hawk, Barred Owl, Downy and Golden-fronted Woodpeckers, Black-crested Titmouse and Northern Cardinal are common residents along this wooded floodplain. Dragonflies such as Widow Skimmer and Eastern Ringtail flit through the woodlands. Migrating warblers can be spotted in the spring and fall, and White-throated and Lincoln’s Sparrows, Hermit Thrush, Winter Wren and Red-breasted Nuthatch can be seen in the winter. Barred Owls and Red-shouldered Hawks nest in and around the trails and can be found there year-round. Guided tours are available by request. The Jack Judson Nature Trails are maintained by the San Antonio Audubon Society. They are located inside the Olmos Flood Basin in Alamo Heights along Hondo and Olmos creeks and at the intersection of Viesca and Greely.

In the Loop Four-Story Office Building at 200 Austin Highway Ready for Tenants BY RON AARON EISENBERG
A new addition to Austin Highway has office space for area businesses, which is exactly what Ridgemont Properties Inc. wanted to do when it planned the new structure at 200 Austin Highway. “Our goal was to attract local, small businesses looking for space in Alamo Heights,” Ridgemont Properties VP Trebes Sasser, Jr. told 78209 Magazine. The 28,000-square foot building has several completed spec suites, plus additional space for businesses to build out to accommodate their needs. Sasser said, “We like the space so much we are moving our offices from Broadway to the new building. We are taking over a portion of the third floor.” “The project follows the completion of Magnolia Heights, the high-end luxury apartment development next door at Broadway and Austin Highway. It has 150 residential units and two groundfloor retail spaces,” he told 78209. The new four-story building sits on the site of a Bank of America branch which was demolished in November 2019. Construction of the new facility began in 2020. Sasser explained, “With the absence of high end new office space in AH proper, we felt there was a need to
serve the local community; a chance to have space in AH without having to travel to downtown San Antonio. “We think we have a competitive edge over other office buildings in the area because we offer free parking for tenants and visitors.” The property is being marketed by Christi Griggs of CBRE Group Inc.

Leija Opens New Fitness Gym Two-time world boxing champion Jesse James Leija recently opened a new fitness gym at 8418 Broadway, close to Loop 410. Access is off Greenbrier near Broadway. With the new facility, Leija closed his gym on San Pedro, where he had trained clients for over seventeen years. James and his older son, James II, train people who come to Leija Boxing + Fitness. Why the new location? Leija says, “While our clients come from all over the city and county, we had many from the Alamo Heights community.” With such close access to Loop 410, he figured the new site was a perfect location for his fitness facility. “Our clients range in age from six to seeventy-eight,” Leija told 78209 Magazine. And he added, “Our goal is to give people a workout they’re not accustomed to, plus, we teach them self-defense. “We have many women and families and business executives who come to our gym to get into shape,” he said. According to Newsweek.com, Boxing 1is 5/30/19 a complete WaterGardenGemsJune2019.qxp_Layout 1:06 fitness PM Page 1
system. It stimulates muscle growth, enhances muscle endurance, and provides good cardio to strengthen your heart and give you more energy. And because boxing utilizes practically the entire body in various movements, your body becomes a calorie-burning machine. Leija said, “We like to tell people, we will help them box themselves into shape.”

In the Loop Zoo Hosting Monarch Festival in Late March This year’s Monarch Festival is happening March 27 – 28, 2021, at the SA Zoo. It’s a two-day event celebrating all things monarchs, milkweed, and migration! Attendees will receive free native milkweed and native nectar plant seeds, participate in fun games and crafts, and learn how you can help end the extinction of the monarch butterfly. In 2017 San Antonio was named the first Monarch Champion City by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). As a Monarch Champion City, COSA is dedicated to adopting 24 recommended actions cited by the NWF. One of those happens to be hosting a festival dedicated to the Monarch butterfly. San Antonio Zoo is a member of the Alamo Area Monarch Collaborative, a city initiative to conserve the monarch in San Antonio, Texas, and surrounding areas.
Taco Garage Shutters Doors, But Baby Taco Garage Remains Open Taco Garage, which began life as a service station, later converted into a restaurant, is closed after 15 years, The restaurant was at 8403 Broadway, 78209, just inside Loop 410. Owner Lee Beekly told 78209 Magazine he plans to devote more time to his other restaurants -- the downtown Burleson Yard Beer Garden, Hops and Hounds, near McAllister Park, and the sister property next to Taco Garage, Baby Taco Garage, 8343 Broadway, 78209. All three establishments are open. He added, “I like the carryout only concept like we have at Baby Taco Garage.” Beekly also said he’s renting out Taco Garage as a “ghost
kitchen” for some friends. According to webstaurantstore. com, “A ghost restaurant, also known as a virtual restaurant or cloud kitchen, is a food service establishment that offers takeout only. These ‘ghostly’ eateries don’t have a storefront, so customers can’t come to pick up their food. Ghost restaurants deliver food directly to their patrons, often through third-party delivery services, like Uber Eats, Grub Hub, and Door Dash. In an Instagram post announcing the closing of Taco Garage, Beekly stated, “It’s been a great run y’all,” But it may not be over for the Taco Garage site. Beekly explained, “I’ll probably re-brand, but right now, I’m in a holding pattern because of other projects.

residents Jay Uribe and Junab Ali met back when they were just teenagers at Central Catholic High School. They had no idea back then they’d eventually reconnect later in life, start a small business together and 20 years later would become one of the most sought-after cyber security and IT document handlers in the country. Ron was eventually re-stationed at Randolph Air Base, where he retired from the Air Force. He and Helene settled in the Alamo Heights area, where they began to make friends and started a family. Helene began to put together simple flower arrangements for friends when they hosted parties. She would also do a holiday show displaying her creations where friends could buy her arrangements and place orders for holiday gatherings. Word of her talent spread quickly, and Helene found herself in need of a larger space. She found an empty storefront in the Arcadia Grove Shopping Center and negotiated a three-month lease that year to host her holiday shop, and she has occupied the same location for over 30 years. Today, Helene works alongside her daughter, Janice Baldassari, at Creative Floral Designs by Helene. Together, they continue the same level of customer service, offering unique and one-of-a-kind arrangements for their beloved clientele. Janice has worked with her mom for 20 years, and they still serve some of the very same customers that helped Helene get the business going all those years ago. The flower shop has never been associated with a wire service, and they only recently had a website built. They focus on customer service and personal attention for their bouquet recipients. They make sure to contact their delivery recipients so that each delivery is hand-delivered and never left on the
porch. They also ensure that they include descriptions and instructions with each delivery so that the happy recipients know how to take care of their special gift. Their quaint boutique offers flower arrangements and plants, as well as unique gifts from a carefully curated selection of artisans from around the country. This dynamic mother-daughter duo is also very careful about the vendors that they use. Helene states, “After 911, we wanted to move toward a more environmentally friendly and local approach to how we do business.” They source most of their plants and flowers from fair trade companies that work to keep their own communities safe and sustainable. Helene continues to emphasize that, “We want to support local growers and distributors as much as we can. We want to support companies that support their own people.” This little flower shop has become a heritage business in Alamo Heights and has even made the list of the best florists in town by the media. Helene and Janice care about the community that has helped them thrive over the years, and they have set out to give back themselves by hosting monthly pop-up markets every first Sunday of the month, bringing in local artisans to share and sell their creations. Look for their Sunday Pop-Up Markets this spring, beginning on February 7 and continuing throughout the year.
From big companies to small, Mobius Partners has played a huge role in getting businesses in San Antonio and all over the country operating successfully since the pandemic began in March 2020.

or Brad and Addie Bowen, raising their three little boys on Cloverleaf Drive is what they have always dreamt of.
“We have pizza night with our neighbors on Fridays, and the kids can just run around and be kids,” Addie said. “When I was growing up in Fort Worth, the neighborhood kids became some of my very best friends, so I love that my kids are getting to experience that as well.” The couple met in college at Trinity Christian University and married right after graduation. After spending time in Fort Worth, they moved to the area in 2014 with 7-month-old twins, Will and Jack. They spent a few years in Monte Vista before buying their current home in Alamo Heights in 2017. “We always knew we wanted to be in Alamo Heights before the boys started school, and I’m one of those people who when I find a house that I love, I tell Brad, “make an offer right now, this has to be ours,’” Addie said with a laugh. “I have no patience with homes. If it’s meant to be, it has to be. When we walked in to see this home, the little girl who lived there was named Adelaide, and her name was painted on the wall. That’s my name too, so at that moment, I just knew.” Their location in ‘09 means a quick jaunt to most hot spots, and the now 7-year-old twins attend first grade at The Cambridge School. Their little brother, 2-year-old Tripp, attends Alamo Heights United Methodist Preschool. Having three boys means loads of energy, laundry, and, most importantly, outdoor time together as a family for the Bowens. “They’ve become masters on their scooters, and we love taking them to the park to play,” Addie said. “We like to go spend time down at the Pearl too. Anything to be outdoors.”
During the summertime, the Bowens can be found on the water at Canyon Lake, and the boys also love exploring Brad’s family’s ranch outside of Victoria, where he grew up. While the couple was settled initially in Forth Worth, where Addie’s family resides, they moved to San Antonio for business. Originally working in banking, Brad saw entrepreneurial opportunities in San Antonio, and in 2014 purchased Texas Medical Screening, which distributes and manages health kiosks in places like HEB. In 2018, he also purchased CSI Health. “I began to see a need for improved point-of-care provided during a telemedicine session,” Brad said. “Ever since then, we have been designing and manufacturing a variety of diagnostic and screening systems to address this problem and improve healthcare not only in San Antonio but around the world.” With her two oldest now in school, Addie has found herself pursuing new professional goals as well. “I’ve always loved interior design, and a friend of mine recently asked me to help with her home,” Addie said. “My style is pretty traditional. To me, the details make all the difference.” Throughout the ups and downs the last year of the pandemic has thrown at the Bowens and all Americans, Addie feels blessed to call ‘09 home. “It has made us all value what’s truly important,” she said. “We’re so lucky to be here and have such wonderful, supportive friends and neighbors.”
We always knew we wanted to be in Alamo Heights before the boys started school, and I’m one of those people who when I find a house that I love, I tell Brad, “make an offer right now, this has to be ours.’

Neighborhood News AH Council Picks Site for New, Permanent Bike Park, Extends Temporary Park So Kids Can Ride BY RON AARON EISENBERG
At the February 8 meeting, the Alamo Heights City Council unanimously voted to establish a bike park on property in the general area of the Alamo Heights High School baseball field, the Bark Park, and Alamo Heights Blvd. The decision also includes a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Alamo Heights Independent School District, a property survey, land clearing, and any other necessary costs within budget. The Council also approved extending the lease for the Alamo Heights temporary bike park through March 19, 2021. Elizabeth Cox, Vice-President of Development for the Bike Park Association, told 78209 Magazine, “We are pleased to see the temporary location extended through Spring Break and appreciate all the collaboration with the city leadership thus far. We look forward to continuing our work to find a permanent place for the Bike Park.” 24 MARCH 2021 | 78209magazine.com
Cox noted, “My fifteen-year-old son, Weston, surveyed the neighborhood and found 150 kids who said they would like to use the bike park. We have all levels of riders – from 4-years old and up. “It is very cool to watch how the kids mentor each other.” The aerial view shows the three parcels identified as possible sites for the Bike Park. Council members chose the site outlined in Teal -- light blue. The area will be widened and lengthened, per the council directive. The area outlined in yellow is the temporary bike park. Aerial photo courtesy of AH City Council. Bike park Viable Locations: Location 1: NW portion of Hondondo Trails; Location 2: N of Bark Park, S of Corona; Location 3: Between Bark Park & AH BB Field. No date has been announced for opening the permanent park.
Big Changes on the Way for Olmos Park Construction will soon change the look of the main thoroughfare through Olmos Park, thanks to the Olmos Park City Council’s authorizing the EDC to spend $506,510 on new curbs, sidewalk repairs, landscaping, driveways, and lighting on McCullough from the railroad tracks — Olmos Park’s northern city limits — to Clarence Street. In the works since 2018, the project is now rolling out to upgrade the primary thoroughfare through the city. Other work includes enhancing bicycle-lane markings, re-striping, and the installation of raised pavement buttons on McCullough from Clarence to Ridgewood Court. There will be some other surface upgrades on McCullough, too. In addition, crack filling, resurfacing, and re-striping around the Cowboy Kennels parking lot will be done. This measure involves increasing safety at the pet-boarding facility by adding slanted parking spaces, so visitors don’t have to back onto the road at a wrong angle. City officials and business owners along McCullough agree the project will significantly enhance McCullough’s look and welcoming feel. They say it will be good for business.

Neighborhood News AH Council Says No to a Tornado Warning Siren
After weeks of debating whether a city-wide tornado warning siren was needed to alert residents to imminent danger, the Alamo Heights City Council listened to neighbors who had complained about noise and voted instead to reimburse residents who purchase tornado warning devices. The reimbursement was capped at $50.00.
The Council also noted smartphones are nearly all equipped to receive weather alerts. Fire Chief Michael Gdovin shared photos and information about dozens of tornado warning devices residents can purchase at various prices. He also shared with Council how smartphones can alert residents to dangerous weather.

IT SNOWED IN SAN ANTONIO! It is rare for students and teachers in San Antonio to have school cancelled for a Snow Day! In mid-February, schools were closed for more than one day, as temperatures dropped well below freezing and snow began to fall across Texas! Our Alamo Heights students, staff and families, made the best of the closure, marking the historic event creating moments and making memories!
#REMOTEREADIN
Snowed in? Alamo Heights ISD found creative ways to encourage reading among students and staff during time away from schools. The district launched a Remote Read In, asking students and teachers to share photos of themselves reading remotely during the coldest and most significant snowfall in decades in the San Antonio area and across Texas. Students and staff alike shared their favorite books, what they were currently reading, and their cozy reading spots while snowed in! Some students shared how their reading of recipes crafted delicious outcomes, while others took reading and applied a little science to discover new knowledge about the snow and ice surrounding us all! 30 MARCH 2021 | 78209magazine.com

citywide sustainability issue. Future City prepares student participants to be citizens of today’s complex and technical world and to conquer the problems of the future. The 2020-2021 theme is Living on the Moon, with teams designing futuristic lunar cities and providing examples of how the city will use Moon resources to keep its residents safe and healthy. Circle School students developed a lunar settlement model, Jemison City, named in honor of trailblazing astronaut Mae Jemison, the first Black woman in space. Students led their essay this year with the inspiring words of Mae Jemison: “Never limit yourself because of others’ limited imagination; never limit others because of your own limited imagination.” Their design’s key features include the innovative location in the subterranean lava tubes, supported by mines on the Moon’s surface that gather anorthite. This essential resource is processed into oxygen and elements, including calcium, silicon, and aluminum. Past teams have won numerous honors in this competition, including placing first in Regionals in 20182019 and moving forward to compete in Nationals in Washington, D.C.

We just have a conversation!” Bella and Bonnie are a volunteer team with Pups n' Planes, where “comfort” dogs and their owners offer distressed travelers a little sugar. “People are waiting, their flight has been canceled, or they may have a four-hour wait, and they are upset.” “One time, two little girls stopped to pet the dog, and I looked up, and the mother was crying. Her husband was being deployed. I spent probably a half-hour with them, and the dad thanked me so many times because it got them thinking about other things,” Bonnie says. Airport staffers implemented the idea after learning how well it worked at the Los Angeles International Airport. Pups n' Planes has been reducing blood pressure and turning frowns upside down for six years. “In the car, she knows that we are almost at the airport. She gets so excited! Her job is to make people smile. She does that job.” And if you saw Bella, you would smile, too. The girl team also spends time at the airport USO, softening the loneliness and longing of our troops, so familiar to military life. While Bella offers kisses, Canine Explosive Detection Supervisor Sgt. Andres Lopez, and his police dog Keyno, provide safety and security. “We are there to make sure that the traveling public is safe, the dog makes that any threats associated with aviation there aren’t real threats,” says the airport K9 police officer. Lopez and Keyno “nose around," sniffing out threats that could come from a parked car, a suitcase, or a person. “Dogs are about as mobile as you can get,” says Lopez. He means the nose is mobile.
Bella is a volunteer with Pups n' Planes, the airport greeting committee. She wears her little pink coat, cheering up tired travelers at the San Antonio International Airport.

After checking in at home, it was off to Memphis, Tennessee, to deliver nine dogs. “Somebody says: Let’s go somewhere. I say: How far? I am ready.” This volunteer job means going in all directions at once! A widow with two married daughters, her time is her own, so the intrepid 70-year-old rolls onto another off-the-beaten-path to collect more abandoned pups. Before they’re even loaded, here comes another email or voicemail, with instructions for her next run. “It is all different rescues, from Canada, from Michigan, New York, Connecticut, from right here in San Antonio.” Grants, foundations, and philanthropists fund many opera-tions. Airport therapy dogs help soothe people who may be upset because of a “Since there is such a stray problem in San Antonio and the long wait, delayed or cancelled flight. valley, a lot of dogs would be euthanized if rescues did not pick them up.”
But in northern states, stray dogs are rare and, therefore, pre-cious. “I have one lady in Connecticut who cannot get enough dogs. We just transported ten to her on Wednesday. They have no difficulty having them adopted them out.” Why does Texas have a problem and Connecticut does not? “People here don’t have money for spay and neuter, or they breed them.” Quarantine is the first order of business to ensure that the an-imals don’t have distemper or another transmittable disease. Many of them are very scared because all they have known is street life or shelter life. Some are older dogs that owners have surrendered. They get a new puppy, and they get rid of the old.” Ageism is a problem in my world too. It’s become prevalent to transport pets. Some transporters are big operations, with trailers or vans to ferry 50 to 60 homeless hounds. Some programs fly dogs to their new owner, courtesy of volunteer pilots. Mary Kay does pick-ups and deliveries about five days a week, but most of her trips are just half a day or so, which still al-lows her to foster. “The foster dog I had recently had seizures and needed medi-cine three times a day, once at midnight. No one is in the kennel then.” True dedication! “It fills me with happiness because many dogs won’t be eu-thanized and will have found a home to lead a happy life the rest of their days. Sometimes, they come to give me a lick, telling me that they are glad for me to be there.”
Glorifying God and sharing the teachings of Jesus Christ, we build a community of hope and wholeness through worship, education, service and fellowship.

San Antonio, Your Order is Up BY MEREDITH KAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY AL RENDON
46 MARCH 2021 | 78209magazine.com
W
e’ve all been there. We’re in a hurry, and we’re starving, but the thought of driving through to grab another generic fast food meal almost kills our appetite. We crave something simple but fresh and delicious. We need to make it fast, but we want it to be satisfying, and often there simply aren’t any options that we can think of, so we settle for mediocre food again.
It’s time to stop settling and start ordering up. Order Up has been a staple in The Lincoln Heights Shopping Center on Basse Road since 2004, but tucked in the back, facing the HEB, it’s easy to forget that this little neighborhood gem is there. Specializing in three iconic food categories, you’ll find the freshest and tastiest burgers, tacos, and pizzas in San Antonio. Everything is made to order and made inhouse from scratch. The owner, David Galbreath, states, “We try to make everything from scratch. Nothing is frozen or pre-made. Our cooks work hard. There is a lot of prep work to do because it’s all fresh. We even make our own hamburger buns and pizza dough.” The restaurant is focused on doing a few great items in creative ways. There are 14 different burger choices, 14 taco options, and 15 creative ways to order a pizza. They also offer several healthy options for those adhering to special diets, including glutenfree options, paleo recipes, and more. Order any burger or taco served in a fresh green leaf lettuce wrap, and you can also get your delicious pizza on a gluten-free crust. Order Up also serves some of the best French fries and nachos in town, and you can get a sampler to try all of their sauces and dips. Try the Order Up Fry Sampler, which comes with both their original potato and sweet potato fries, along with a taste of each of their signature condiments and quesos: chipotle mayo, serrano ketchup, Caesar dressing, serrano sour cream queso, and chipotle chorizo queso. Their Brisket Nachos are outstanding as well. The restaurant hand cuts and fries all of their own tortilla chips, and they top them with slow-cooked brisket, barbecue sauce, queso, fresh house-made guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, and jalapeños. It honestly doesn’t get more San Antonio than this. Other delicious twists on iconic classics include their Cheeseburger Pizza, and their
incredibly popular San Antonio Bean Burger, featuring a thick ground beef patty, chipotle mayo, pico de gallo, black beans, queso, and of course, fresh tortilla chip strips for that extra crunch. Breakfast tacos are a beloved staple of our San Antonio diet, and Order Up makes some of the tastiest tacos in town. Although Austin has tried to claim the credit for creating these morning necessities, we all know that San Antonio holds that title. Come on in any morning from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and start your day with any of their breakfast tacos, pizzas, bagels, or breakfast “boats.” The Green Machine Taco features scrambled eggs, avocado, cilantro, serrano sour cream, and jack cheese. It’s perfect when you need a spicy eye-opener. You should also try the Whole Hog Breakfast Pizza with chorizo, bacon, scrambled eggs, cheddar, and jack cheese. It will definitely fill you up and keep you going all morning long. Order Up is also becoming very famous for its delicious and unique CH2 Double Chocolate Chip Cookies. They’ve become so popular that they even have their own website, and they ship their cookies all over the country. There are ten pounds of chocolate chips in every batch that they bake, and they are made with real butter, which makes them extra chewy. They are delicious mounds of decadency and will definitely become your new favorite craving. In a world where it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find a fast and fresh option when you’re looking for something simple but delicious, it’s great to know that we still have a few local alternatives out there. Order Up is the type of establishment that we love to frequent and patronize because it supports local business driving our communities, and they offer fantastic food at affordable prices. Their dining room is open, but they also offer curbside and real tequila margaritas to go to serve you like great neighbors.

YOUR PPP QUESTIONS ANSWERED “Kim Ford and theKFORDgroup team have been instrumental in keeping our agency abreast of the ongoing changes regarding the Paycheck Protection Program. They also designed an Excel spreadsheet specific to tracking the company’s payroll and expenses for this program. Without their continuous guidance, our agency would have had to spend hours reading the continuous revisions of the bill and try to understand all the provisions. We are so appreciative of their knowledge and ongoing explanation of the revisions.” – Shirley Crandall, President of Crandall & Associates Insurance
