Editor’s Letter
September Who would’ve ever thought we’d be back to wearing masks and have so many concerns and questions about COVID? It seems we have to look a little harder these days to find the good things, but really, they’re all around us! I love it that some people wear masks and some don’t, yet people seem to respect one another for their personal decisions. One aversion that I have to masks, though, is that they hide people’s smiles. Smiles are usually the first thing we notice when we see a person. Dr. Devin Cochran has spent his entire adult life making people’s smiles beautiful. After working as a dentist for seven years, he decided he wanted to pursue a career in orthodontics. He went back to school and then returned to San Antonio to open Cochran Orthodontics. Today he has three offices in San Antonio, including one in Lincoln Heights. Kirk and Mary Waibel and their two children love to travel but they all agree, “there’s no place like home.” A tight knit family, Kirk and Mary have always been very active in their children’s schools and other activities. They love spending time together as a family and also appreciate and enjoy being part of such a close community in 78209. I remember it like it was yesterday, my mom and daddy took me to the Barn Door for my birthday and when we drove into the parking lot I saw my name on the marquis, “Happy Birthday Susan.” I’ll bet at one time or another most of you have had that same experience. The Barn Door has been a staple for not just ‘09ers but for people from all over the city since 1953. Known for their delicious steaks and friendly atmosphere, it is their consistency and great customer service that keep people coming back. My personal favorite is the Chateaubriand with a Tasso’s potato. With so many uncertainties in our world right now, it’s nice to know that 78209 is such a tight knit community where neighbors truly care about one another. If you are lucky enough to live in 78209, you are lucky enough!

Casa Azul, the captivating rendition of artist Frida Kahlo’s iconic blue home is part of the Frida Kahlo Oasis at the San Antonio Botanical Garden. Her home and lush green sanctuary had a profound influence on her timeless art. This uniquely curated exhibition uncovers Kahlo’s deep connection with Mexican native vegetation and the natural world. Nestled in the heart of the Botanical Garden and occupying 2,100 square feet, it is shaded by giant oak trees, and overflowing with Mexican native plants, and a mixture of tropical foliage and desert plants, including elephant ears, bougainvillea, agave, and marigolds. Included are the famous landmarks of Kahlo’s garden at Casa Azul such as the pyramid that displayed Diego Rivera’s pre-Colombian artifacts collection, the frog-themed fountain, and Kahlo’s desk and easel. The exhibition features six monumental animals throughout the lush garden grounds – a dog, monkey, deer, butterfly, parrot, and hummingbird – which often appear in Kahlo’s artworks as a testimonial to her passion for Mexican Arte Popular.

In the Loop Nowhere Bookshop BY RON AARON EISENBERG
If a bookshop can be a magical place, then Nowhere Bookshop is it. Filled with beautifully displayed books and gift items, with many nooks and crannies to sit and leaf through a book or two, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened best-selling author Jenny Lawson’s new store is a must-visit for children and adults. Nowhere recently opened its doors to the public. It has offered curbside and online sales for many months. The shop is located at 5154 Broadway in 78209. As described on its website, the store features new books, author events, unique gifts, and a coffee, wine, and beer bar planned for the near future (when COVID-19 infection rates go down in San Antonio). Nowhere Bookshop aims to be a space for folks to gather to share their passion for the written word. The website commentary continues, “Nowhere Bookshop’s name is inspired by that feeling you get when lost in a good book.” According to Jenny, “Growing up, I spent more time in the land of books than I did in real life. I lived in those neverlands that you can only visit in stories. The places you grew up in that never actually existed. The ones 14 SEPTEMBER 2021 | 78209magazine.com
you got lost in and the ones where you found yourself. Those strange countries that are real and important, even though they exist nowhere at all but inside you.” The bookshop is open for in-store shopping Monday Saturday 10 am to 6 pm. It is Closed on Sundays. For more information, check out NOWHERE’s website, nowherebookshop.com or call 210-640-7260.
Local Author to Launch New Novel at The Twig San Antonio author Alda Dobbs was born in Mexico but moved to San Antonio when she was just a baby. Dobbs, 45, graduated from Brackenridge High School and was not sure what she wanted to do. So, she joined the Air Force, where she did a three-year enlistment. Dobbs then studied physics at UTSA and went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from U.T. Austin. She told me she loves physics and would have pursued a career in the field, but it was difficult to find work as a physicist when she was ready to enter the workforce. Despite her love of science, physics, and engineering, Dobbs said, “I always had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to be a writer. Her debut novel -- Barefoot Dreams Of Petra Luna – follows the journey of a young Mexican girl to the United States and the challenges she faced. Dobbs said her grandmother and mother provided much of the inspiration for her novel, which is set around the Mexican Revolution in 1913. The Twig Book Shop is hosting the launch party for
Dobbs in honor of her debut novel on Saturday, September 18, from 6:30–8:30 pm. The event is free. The Twig is located at 306 Pearl Pkwy, Unit 106. Dobbs will read from her book, followed by a book signing after the presentation. Mariachi Azul de San Antonio will kick off the evening with traditional polka-corridos from that era. Food and refreshments will be served. The Scooby Van will be present as well.

In the Loop New Vet Clinic Opening on Broadway in September A new veterinary clinic is coming to Alamo Heights at the intersection of Austin Highway and Broadway. The clinic is part of a network of veterinary-owned practices, offering comprehensive pet care, including grooming and boarding, in addition to balanced puppy/kitten and senior pet wellness care, surgery, dental care, and other veterinary services. The building at 5421 Broadway previously housed the NIX Health Sleep Center. Nichole D’Intino, DVM, will lead CityVet-Alamo Heights. “I am excited to embark on this adventure with CityVet. Opening a veterinary clinic has been a life-long dream, and I am looking forward to serving the people and pets of Alamo Heights,” she said. D’Intino says she loves the challenge of treating a wide variety of medical conditions. She graduated from Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2018. Walk-ins will be welcome at the new clinic, but appointments are recommended. CityVet has 20 locations in Texas, including fourteen in Dallas. The Alamo Heights clinic is the company’s first location in San Antonio.
Materials Marking Breathes New Life into Iconic Building at Broadway & Austin Highway The former Mobil station on the corner of Broadway and Austin Highway has always been a landmark. It was one of four built north, east, west, and south of downtown by the Magnolia Oil Company. When the gas station went out of business, the famous Flying Horse was saved. The location has been leased by several different businesses over the years, including a florist, a realtor, an interior design company, and an upscale ladies clothing store. Now, Materials Marketing is taking over the space at 5424 Broadway to serve as a showroom for its stone products. John Keedy, content marketing manager for the company, told 78209 Magazine, “We are so excited to be part of the Alamo Heights community. The iconic history of the building attracted us to it and its location. The building seemed to line up with our core values. The products that we sell have a thousand years of history in them which mirrors the history of the Mobile gas station that stood at that intersection.” Keedy added, “Whether exteriors or interiors, we take natural stone to enhance people’s homes. And what we 16 SEPTEMBER 2021 | 78209magazine.com
do customizes the home for generations to come. “Our surfaces are natural stone – we have a wide range of ceramic and glass tiles as well. Our main emphasis is our ability to custom carve any kind of stone. All of the stone we work with is natural. And, the majority of our limestone is from our quarry in Texas. The company plans to host a series of special shows featuring well-known artists who work with stone, the Denise McGaha Collection (launching September 2021) and the Donna Mondi Collection (launching November 2021). Materials Marketing has been in business for 68 years and is headquartered in San Antonio. On its website, the company says, “Since 1965, our passion has been bringing your design dreams to life through the singular, timeless beauty of natural stone. We quarry, cut, carve, polish, and make mosaics and other custom pieces from stone—the earth’s oldest and most durable building material. By embracing the striations and color variations that naturally occur in stone, we make each piece a unique product.”

Cult-Favorite Yuengling Beer Now in ‘09 Like Shiner Bock Beer in the 1980s, Yuengling is one of those beers that was hard to find and perhaps contributed to its cult following and devotion. People clamored for it in Alamo Heights and elsewhere. But for beer lovers, the wait is over. Yuengling has landed and is available in nearly all local bars and restaurants, including The Barn Door, The Winchester, The Broadway 5050, Stone Werks Big Rock Grille (Lincoln Heights), Rebar, Betos, and most likely every other bar and restaurant in ’09 and across San Antonio. Yuengling is the country’s oldest brewery, established in 1829 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. According to the Pennsylvania Center for the Book, beer has been around a long, long time. “The history of beer can be traced back to as early as 4300 B.C. in Babylonian, Egyptian, and even Incan cultures.” 18 SEPTEMBER 2021 | 78209magazine.com

rom the minute someone comments on a missing front tooth when we are children, we become aware of the impact our smiles can have on others. Our teeth are very important and taking care of them is essential to maintaining our health. Dr. Devin Cochran understands this as an experienced orthodontist and has been correcting dental problems and straightening teeth since 1985.
Cochran Orthodontics has three San Antonio locations, and his Alamo Heights location is located next door to HEB in the Lincoln Heights Shopping Center. Along with his talented and professional staff, Dr. Cochran specializes in correcting overcrowding, spacing issues, as well as over and underbite problems. He also offers discreet treatment options such as Invisalign®, clear aligners, and lingual braces, which are installed behind the teeth. Dr. Cochran completed his undergraduate studies at The University of Texas in Austin and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at U.T. Health Science Center. He initially began his dentistry practice in general dentistry, but after seven years, he decided to pursue his desire to specialize in orthodontics and went back to school, attending the U.T. Dental Branch in Houston. Upon returning to San Antonio, Dr. Cochran opened his first office near Bitters and Blanco and began building his patient clientele, treating children, teenagers and adults. Devin Cochran was born in Oklahoma, but he was raised in San Antonio and graduated from Churchill High School. He has been married to his wife, Eileen, for nearly 40 years, and together, the couple has three sons, ages 32, 30, and 19. They support numerous charities in the community, and he even mentors students from elementary school, through high school, with the ACTS Mission organization. As a member of The San Antonio Dental Society, Dr. Cochran also mentors dental students in their freshman and sophomore years of college, helping them navigate their courses and preparing them for the transition from student to doctor. The team at Cochran Orthodontics has extensive experience
diagnosing and treating a variety of dental problems and aesthetic issues. They will develop a customized treatment plan based on the patient’s needs, desired outcomes, and budget and will work with each individual every step of the way until the perfect smile or dental outcome is achieved. Dr. Cochran has created a unique publication to educate patients and walk them through the process of orthodontic procedures. You can access “The Top 10 Things You Must Know Before Choosing Your Orthodontist” on their website. It’s full of information about the practice itself, its philosophies, and patient promise, along with descriptions of the types of procedures and treatments available. Although 30% of Dr. Cochran’s patients are adults, the practice begins to see patients as young as seven years old, as dental problems are diagnosed. The majority of adolescent patients will begin their orthodontic treatment around 12 or 13. The average time it takes to correct dental problems and straighten teeth is 20 to 24 months, with monthly visits to adjust hardware and assess treatment progress. Cochran Orthodontics offers affordable payment options and convenient appointment times, including Saturdays when needed, at their three locations across town. Every new potential patient will receive a complimentary New Patient Assessment appointment, and every treatment plan is backed by the Cochran Orthodontics satisfaction guarantee. You only need to read the testimonials on their website to know that Dr. Cochran and his staff genuinely care about their patients, and their award-winning focus on individual treatment programs will leave you with the most beautiful smile in the room. 78209magazine.com | SEPTEMBER 2021 21

ost of us are allergic to something, whether it’s seasonal or something we need to steer clear of to avoid a trigger, but for one local doctor, finding cures and treatments for the allergies plaguing his fellow San Antonians has become a way of life. Dr. Kirk Waibel and his wife, Dr. Mary Waibel, claim to be just a typical Alamo Heights family. Their daughter, Catherine (18), is studying Cyber Security at U.T.S.A., and their son, Jack (17), is embarking upon his senior year as a mule at Alamo Heights High School. Kirk Waibel comes from a military family. He was born in Maryland but spent his childhood in San Antonio, where his father was stationed throughout his elementary and middle school years. He lived on the Presidio in San Francisco before returning to San Antonio to attend Trinity University for his undergraduate studies. When he chose to specialize in allergies and immunology, he decided to pursue his medical education at the U.T. Health Science Center, which is where he met his wife. Dr. Mary Waibel was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and she was studying to become a family practitioner when they met. They have been married for 22 years and don’t have any plans to leave their beloved Alamo Heights community anytime soon. Kirk spent the first half of his career as an Army physician and was the Chief Physician of the allergy clinic at B.A.M.C. when he retired from the military in 2019. He recently began his second career as an allergy specialist at Aspire Allergy & Sinus on Broadway. Dr. Waibel is also one of the few physicians who specializes in the ExACT Immunoplasty treatment. Patients who qualify for this treatment receive lymph node injections for a period of time, and the treatment has been shown to have an 87% long-term success rate. It’s a game-changer for allergy sufferers. Together, the Waibel family has traveled extensively, and they even spent five years in Ramstein, Germany, where Kirk was stationed from 2013 to 2018. They purchased their Alamo Heights home in 2006 and kept the house while overseas, knowing that they would eventually return to retire. They love the close-knit community they live in, and they have been very active within their children’s schools and other local clubs. Both Catherine and Jack spent years competing with the Alamo Area Aquatics Association in Alamo Heights and spent their summers working with younger kids in the summer camp swim program. Swimming is definitely a family sport. Kirk is also a U.S.A. swim official, and he still officiates swim meets throughout the area.
Living here always feels like you are a part of a special and exclusive neighborhood, although you are in the middle of such a big city. When asked what they love most about their community, both Mary and Kirk agree that “Living here always feels like you are a part of a special and exclusive neighborhood, although you are in the middle of such a big city.” The family has an annual membership to the San Antonio Botanical Gardens, and they support their local Salvation Army as well. In their spare time, they enjoy simple things like going to the movies and playing miniature golf together. Although they will tell you that they are pretty dull compared to other families, their beautiful home, full of eclectic antiques and unique décor, along with the loving and respectful way they interact with one another, shows visitors that they are indeed an extraordinary family that sticks together, even when the world seems to be going insane. 78209magazine.com | SEPTEMBER 2021 23

Neighborhood News Masks, Vaccines Optional for Area City Employees, Except EMS BY RON AARON EISENBERG
With discussions running rampant across the state of Texas on mandating COVID-19 vaccines and mask-wearing and COVID-19 infection rates surging, I asked Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, and Olmos Park’s city managers their policy on masks and vaccinations. All said there was no mandate in their communities. In response to the question, Alamo Heights city manager Buddy Kuhn said, “No, we are not at this time requiring masks and vaccinations due to all of the court battles. Most employees are voluntarily wearing them in city hall and other confined areas.” Kuhn added, “We have suggested that they wear masks; however, Governor Abbott pre-empted municipalities from requiring masks for visitors or employees based on interpretation by our attorney.” “The same applies to vaccines at this time. To my 26 SEPTEMBER 2021 | 78209magazine.com
knowledge, that is not part of what the lawsuits are challenging – just the mask mandates.” “First responders making patient contacts are required to wear PPE while executing their duties, but this was already addressed by policy and DSHS requirements. Until all of this is settled in court, we will not be testing the legality of it,” Kuhn said. Terrell Hills City Manager William Foley echoed Kuhn’s comments, “Both masks and vaccinations are offered but optional.” And Olmos Park city manager Celia Deleon also told 78209 Magazine there was no requirement for mask-wearing or vaccinations in her community. Depending on the outcome of court suits, those policies could change.

Despite COVID-19, Alamo Heights Rotary is Rocking and Rolling In July 2021, Alamo Heights Rotary members constructed and put in three mini-library boxes on three Alamo Heights ISD school campuses, Woodridge Elementary, Howard Early Childhood, and Cambridge Elementary. The library boxes are available for anyone, kids through adults, to borrow and return books. Alamo Heights Rotary past-secretary Richard Berchin told 78209 Magazine, “So far, this has been very successful. Some people are not only taking out books to read but also placing some of their own for others to borrow. The stock of books is continually being reviewed and renewed by our club members.” And Berchin added, “Related to but separate from the mini-libraries, we continue to collect and donate books to a variety of the local military support activities like the USO, Warrior and Family Support Center, and Fisher Houses.” Rotary club members also volunteer to deliver meals to the homebound supported by the Meals on Wheels program. Because of the significant increase in needs due to COVID-19, Rotary members recently began providing drivers to Jefferson Outreach to deliver food and other items to homebound seniors. BACK TO SCHOOL!
After a great summer for our extraordinary Alamo Heights ISD families and staff, everyone was reunited on August 16 for our first day of the 2021-2022 school year! The lead-up, however, felt like more of an extended festivity, especially for our new Mules and younger kiddos. This year, Howard, Woodridge, and Cambridge celebrated their own Meet the Teacher events, billed as Mulefest. Expectedly, the youngsters were plenty excited to meet the new, friendly faces but our teachers and staff might have been even more elated. “We’ve waited all summer for the kiddos, and we’re super ready and excited to get back to work.” exclaimed Howard teacher Adrienna Huizar. 30 SEPTEMBER 2021 | 78209magazine.com
Woodridge principal Salena Valdes matched the feeling. “So ready, this is exciting seeing all the faces,” Valdes said. Woodridge strings teacher Joshua Younke can’t wait to share some of the new creativity he has planned out all summer. “We know what to expect this year. There are a lot of new ideas that are coming, and we’re excited about that,” he said. Most importantly, the end result is what matters to him and his colleagues. “It’s all about the kids. The kids are going to be excited, and we’re excited to teach them all the things they need to learn.”

ALAMO HEIGHTS MULES CYCLING TEAM The Alamo Heights Mules Cycling Team is ready to roll this school year and is open to all students in grades 6 - 12 who want to be part of an inclusive group interested in learning about and competing in the sport of mountain biking. Cycling encompasses many developmental attributes, including improving self-confidence, learning and maintaining physical activity for a healthy lifestyle, developing friendships, and providing positive role models in the lives of student-athletes. Founded in December 2018, the team had a stellar first season with 12 trailblazing student-athletes, and in the second season, we doubled the size of the group. The third season brought a
triple-sized team, and we are expecting even more growth this coming season. Student-athletes compete against teams from across Texas as part of the Texas Interscholastic Mountain Bike Team, organized by the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). For the past 2021 season, the Mules Cycling team finished in 3rd place out of 25 teams—incredible success—lifted by high school podium finishers Aidan Kane, Cohen Kinsey, Joshua Murguia, and Caroline Daskevich. The team is open to females and males at AHJS and AHHS this Fall 2021/Spring 2022. their phone. We just have a conversation!” Bella and Bonnie are a volunteer team with Pups n' Planes, where “comfort” dogs and their owners offer distressed travelers a little sugar. “People are waiting, their flight has been canceled, or they may have a four-hour wait, and they are upset.” “One time, two little girls stopped to pet the dog, and I looked up, and the mother was crying. Her husband was being deployed. I spent probably a half-hour with them, and the dad thanked me so many times because it got them thinking about other things,” Bonnie says. Airport staffers implemented the idea after learning how well it worked at the Los Angeles International Airport. Pups n' Planes has been reducing blood pressure and turning frowns upside down for six years. “In the car, she knows that we are almost at the airport. She gets so excited! Her job is to make people smile. She does that job.” And if you saw Bella, you would smile, too. The girl team also spends time at the airport USO, softening the loneliness and longing of our troops, so familiar to military life. While Bella offers kisses, Canine Explosive Detection Supervisor Sgt. Andres Lopez, and his police dog Keyno, provide safety and security. “We are there to make sure that the traveling public is safe, the dog makes that any threats associated with aviation there aren’t real threats,” says the airport K9 police officer. Lopez and Keyno “nose around," sniffing out threats that could come from a parked car, a suitcase, or a person. “Dogs are about as mobile as you can get,” says Lopez. He means the nose is mobile.
Bella is a volunteer with Pups n' Planes, the airport greeting committee. She wears her little pink coat, cheering up tired travelers at the San Antonio International Airport.
CATS AND THEIR CARE

People who Jobs want a cat might think, “Oh, I will get a cat, Dogs with food, and kitty litter, and I’m done.” BYKiss BERITcat MASON and pet cat, end of story. But their independent nature belies the fact that cats require medical and healthcare, too. Theexample, San Antonio For CatsInternational need dentalAirport care. is HUGE! It recently broke a record, flying some 15,000 people A DAY, Alamo Heights Pet Clinic writes that “Plaque builds up on for a total of 10.36 million passengers in 2019. your pet’s teeth.” Passengers most certainly frequent the airport, but pups do too. But, like people, overweight cats are more likely to develop 34 APRIL 2020 | 78209magazine.com 38 SEPTEMBER 2021 | 78209magazine.com
diabetes, arthritis, gastrointestinal problems, and liver disease. San Antonio cat medical foster Susan Schmahlenberger says, “If your cat is getting chunky, feed twice a day instead of free feeding.” This means don’t keep a full bowl of food always on offer. The Alamo Heights Pet Clinic says, “Although topping off the bowl may seem harmless, it could increase your pet’s risk of becoming overweight or obese.” Art illustrations show lovely pictures of sweet little kitties lapping milk from a bowl. But in reality, veterinarians say cats can suffer lactose intolerance. Kittens need mama’s milk, but if your adult cat exhibits ana Airport therapy dogs help soothe people who may be upset because of upset stomach, vomiting, abdominal pain, flight. or diarrhea, milk long wait, delayed or cancelled might be to blame. Did you know that cats also need identification?
Outdoor cats certainly need an I.D., but even indoor cats may imagine themselves escape artists, darting out to explore the great unknown. “Animal Care Services on Highway 151 provides free microchipping,” says foster cat mama, Schmahlenberger. Many states make it a crime if a motorist hits a dog or cat and drives on without reporting it or stopping to render aid. But, how can an owner be notified unless the cat has I.D.? I know several people who rescued kittens this year. They were lucky to find them homes because, as usual, there are too many cats and not enough owners to care for them. Spay and neuter your cats! If feral cats are regulars at your house, ask Animal Care Services at Alamo Heights City Hall about Trap, Neuter, and Return (T.N.R). “The surgery helps female cats avoid breast cancer and uterine infections and prevents or reduces the risk of prostate gland enlargement and testicular cancer in males,” cites the American Veterinary Medical Association. “Un-neutered males fight with each other spreading feline aids and feline leukemia,” adds Schmahlenberger. Cats also need routine vet visits, where docs may observe with a knowing eye early signs of illness. Early detection saves lives. And cats require vaccinations for rabies and distemper. Visits offer the perfect opportunity to monitor your pet’s weight and discuss any health or behavioral concerns you may have,” says the clinic. “Be mindful of how many cats you have in your home! Too many can cause stress which can bring on illnesses likes upper respiratory disease and may elicit infighting and territorial marking with urine. Some experts recommend no more than one cat for every room in your house,” says Schmahlenberger. A few other rules: Cats prefer clean litter boxes every day. Some experts suggest that each cat has its own box. If the cat spends too much time in the litter box, it might have an infection. New cats should have their own room for about two weeks to allow them to adjust to your other cats. Switch around their bedding when bringing in a newcomer because that lets them familiarize themselves with one another through smell. Until next month! Woof, woof! Roxie

A Faith For All Seasons Life is meaningful as we know and trust God. For God possesses the ultimate power to transform: the ordinary into the extraordinary, the daily into the eternal, the mistake into redemption. Otherwise we are left to our own devices, resulting in a world of hurt. So the author of Ecclesiastes wrote, “There is a time and there is a way to know how to do what needs to be done in life” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8). Discerning the “what & when” requires a faith-filled wisdom gained from sweaty human experience of trusting God equally during the easy and hard times. ery few restaurants can claim that they have been serving loyal customers for nearly 70 years. Most restaurants statistically fail within the first five years of business. It is an incredibly difficult industry, but one area restaurant has withstood the test of time and has stood as one of our city’s most iconic establishments for many years.
The Barn Door Restaurant & Meat Market opened their doors in 1953, and they are still serving up perfectly grilled steaks and the freshest seafood today. The restaurant has become an icon in the Alamo Heights area, and they have served many generations of San Antonians over the years. Everything at The Barn Door is made fresh and in-house. The steaks are wet-aged in-house, and their delicious salad dressings are made fresh daily. The restaurant prides itself on producing consistent quality each and every day, and the amazing staff works hard to uphold those values that have allowed the restaurant to not only survive the ups and downs of the economy but to thrive, even during the pandemic. From the friendly greetings when you walk through the door to the immaculately clean interior, it is evident that The Barn Door is a family business that cares about the customers’ experience. Randy Stokes bought the restaurant in 2011, and he can still be seen greeting customers every day. The restaurant was remodeled in 2013 due to a devastating fire that took out the grilling station, but the changes were needed to inject new life into the business. Stokes says, “You don’t have to change, but you do have to evolve.” He spent the first 16 years of his professional career in the wholesale bakery business and jumped at the opportunity to purchase The Barn Door when he was approached by David Strauss, one of the original partners. When asked what he feels is the biggest reason the restaurant continues to succeed, Stokes says, “It is the customer’s restaurant. I just manage the experience so that they want to come back.” Since the restaurant opened, their delicious steaks have always been cooked on a grill over mesquite and charcoal. There isn’t
even a gas line in the restaurant. The coals are kept alive every day, and even during the pandemic, which forced them to shut down for two months, Randy and his loyal team took turns keeping the fire burning, like the Olympic torch. In fact, the current grill master, Robert Cochran, has been manning the flames for over 35 years, and it was his uncle, Sonny, who lit the first coals when the restaurant opened in 1953. The restaurant staff considers itself family. Many of the employees have been there for over 20 years, including the restaurant manager, Trish Walls, who still keeps everyone in line after 24 years. The restaurant seats 450 people, and there is always a party in one of the private dining rooms. It’s the perfect place for holiday and corporate gatherings, and it can accommodate up to 150 people for a private event. The menu features only the highest quality prime cuts of beef, along with an impressive selection of appetizers, burgers and sandwiches, salads, and specialty dishes, like their Sirloin Con Queso and their Grilled Quail. The steaks are grilled to perfection, and there are so many cuts to select from. They even feature Chateaubriand that can be cut for any number of guests. If you can’t find something on this menu, then you just aren’t hungry. As a legacy restaurant, The Barn Door has a reputation to maintain, and you can feel the hospitality the minute you walk through the front door. The food is delicious, the service is stellar, and the atmosphere makes you feel like you’re dining with friends. Randy Stokes is very proud of his staff and what they have built together, and it shows. He beams when he introduces his employees to new people, and he lives by his motto, “At the end of the day, it’s a passion, and we are here for our customers.” 78209magazine.com | SEPTEMBER 2021 47
