When it comes to jewelry, sometimes the best things are found in the smallest packages. The same could be said for jewelers. While the large chain establishments have their place, there is something to be said for the smaller, familyowned-and-operated neighborhood gems like C. Aaron Peñaloza Jewelers in the Shops at Lincoln Heights. Attention to detail, personalized service and the expertise of owners Aaron and Mary Peñaloza are just a few of the reasons that generations of the same families have counted on the Peñaloza name for their jewelry needs. “I am now seeing the grandchildren of people who bought their engagement rings from my dad’s shop in the 1970s,” says Aaron, who worked alongside his father for nearly 17 years.“It’s really cool to see someone still wearing and enjoying an old piece that I designed.” FAMILY JEWELS The oldest of four children, Aaron Peñaloza is a descendant of jewelry royalty. Both his father and grandfather were employed by Hertzberg Jewelers, which was arguably one of the best-known jewelry stores of its time. His father left Hertzberg and embarked on a partnership with George Dennis before opening Peñaloza and Sons, primarily a wholesale business, in downtown San Antonio. Aaron cut his teeth at his father’s side, working summers polishing, injecting waxes and delivering jewelry all over town. Over the years, however, Aaron became fascinated with the retail aspect, and he began to focus on building that component of the family business. In 1990, Aaron realized his dream of owning his own retail shop when he and his wife, Mary, opened the doors of C. Aaron Peñaloza Jewelers in the Sunset Ridge shopping center, where they remained for 20 years. In 2011, they relocated to the Shops at Lincoln Heights. “We originally selected Alamo Heights for our business because we thought it was a great part of town that, at the time, was underserved by jewelry businesses,” explains Aaron. “Also, when I left my dad’s business, many of those customers lived in ’09, and Mary and I lived in Olmos Park, so it just seemed natural to keep our business here.”

EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW Aaron and Mary set out to fill a niche in Alamo Heights by offering an impressive selection of fine and custom jewelry, a signature bridal line (named after Aaron’s grandfather, Rafael) and an array of services ranging from repairs to appraisals. But what really sets this neighborhood gem apart is the focus on estate jewelry. “Estate really is our specialty,” says Aaron. “I’ve always enjoyed it because of its ties to the past, the craftsmanship and the different design sensibility.” Once a year, Aaron and Mary clear out all the jewelry from the cases and fill the store with nothing but estate pieces for the annual estate jewelry sale. Now in its eighth year, the estate sale will take place Nov. 3-15 and will feature pieces ranging from the Victorian to retro eras, many of which have been consigned from customers. “The advantages to buying estate pieces are that they are usually less expensive and they are unique,” explains Mary, adding that estate doesn’t have to be a period piece. “It simply means pre-owned,” she says. “We have some pieces that are very contemporary.” Buying estate pieces, as with buying any piece of fine jewelry, should always be done carefully and from a trustworthy jeweler. Part of what keeps the Peñaloza customers loyal is the knowledge that they can always deal directly with Aaron or Mary. Aaron, who holds credentials from the Gemologist Association of America, is a registered jeweler with the American Gemologist Society and a charter senior member of the National Gem and Jewelry Appraisal Association. He always enjoys sharing his expertise and broad knowledge with his customers. “You get experience, continuity and traditions when you work with a small jeweler for many years,” says Mary. “And you want someone that you can trust who has credentials,

longevity and involvement in the community.” THE PERFECT SETTING Community involvement is important to the Peñalozas. Not only is C. Aaron Peñaloza Jewelers a fixture in Alamo Heights, so are the owners. Mary and Aaron have spent all 43 years of their marriage living and working in this neighborhood that they love. Their two children (now grown) attended Alamo Heights schools, and Mary has served on several committees and boards that benefit the community over the years. “We love it here, and we love the old neighborhoods,” says Aaron. “The convenience factor is huge. It is so centrally located, I can ride my bike to work.” To say that Aaron enjoys biking is an understatement. An avid cyclist in college, he picked the habit up again several years ago after learning that he suffered from high blood pressure and high cholesterol. “I was a couch potato for 20 years,” he admits. “I started riding again to address these health issues.” Today, Aaron rides at least 20 to 40 miles two times a week and 40 to 60 miles on the weekends. Weekends are also a time for family and friends. The couple enjoys spending time with their two grandchildren, and Mary in particular relishes what she calls the “envelopment” of a small community like Alamo Heights. “It’s fun to live in a neighborhood for years and get to know all the kids and grandkids,” she says happily. “The world is a big, scary place, and being in a neighborhood like this where you see people you know all the time is wonderful.”

ALAMO HEIGHTS COACH TACKLES LIFE IN ‘ O9 THE ENTIRE FAMILY IS INVOLVED By BONNY OSTERHAGE

To say that high school football in Texas is just another sport is like saying the Pope is just another Catholic. There are few things that Texans love more than a good high school football game, and there are few things ‘09 residents love more than to watch the Alamo Heights Mules take to the football field. As offensive coordinator for the football team, coach Randy Osborne has been a part of the Mules football fever since 1998 and was part of the state championship win of 2006. “I will never forget Broadway being lined with thousands of people from 12 | September 2014

Alamo Heights after we won the game, “ he reminisces. “Receiving phone calls, emails and letters from Alamo Heights alumni, some who had graduated more than 40 years ago, was an unbelievable experience that I will cherish forever.” The son of the head football coach at MacArthur High School, Randy has football in his blood. After graduating from MacArthur in 1988, he played the sport for four years while earning his undergraduate degree from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M Commerce) and stayed and coached as a graduate assistant for another year before moving back to San

Antonio to accept a coaching position with Bradley Middle School. While at Bradley, he worked with Mike Norment, now the head coach at Alamo Heights. It was Norment who encouraged him to apply for his current coaching position, and he has never looked back. “The thing I like most about living and working in this community is the convenience of big city living with a small town feel,” he says. “I love the fact that we have two elementary schools, one junior high and one high school. I think this creates a close-knit environment unlike any other in San Antonio.”

Randy, who also teaches math and is the head coach for the boys’ track team, is not the only one who has embraced the Alamo Heights lifestyle. His wife, Nicole, also a MacArthur graduate, is an English teacher at the Junior School and coaches the tennis team. The Osborne sons, Jake and Colton, transferred to the Alamo Heights schools when they were in seventh and fourth grades, and both have followed in their father’s cleats by playing football and running track. Jake, the older, graduated from Alamo Heights in May of 2014 and was an all-district receiver for the Regional Finalist football team. He now attends Texas Tech, while Colton is beginning his sophomore year at Alamo Heights. “Having my entire family in the Alamo Heights school system has truly been a blessing,” says Randy. “It has allowed my wife and me to be much more involved in the boys’ academic and extracurricular activities.” Those extracurricular activities extend beyond the doors of the Alamo Heights School District to include involvement in the community at large. The Osbornes are active members of the New Heights services at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church, and Colton is a member of the Young Men’s Service League, a mother/son volunteer organization. Randy is a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association, while Nicole just completed her service as the president of the local chapter of the Texas High School Coaches Wives Association. They are both on the American Cancer Society’s Cattle Baron Gala Committee, a cause that hits close to home for Nicole, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 32. She has been cancer-free for 12 years, but the ordeal was an eye-opener. “Although it was a very traumatic experience, it has made us closer and stronger as a family,” says Randy. “It has helped us strive to live every day to its fullest and appreciate the wonderful life God has given us.” 14 | September 2014

SMOKE SHACK BBQ & SOUTHERN KITCHEN

FOOD TRUCK ADDS NEW LOCATION By RON BECHTOL

It’s a risky business transitioning from a food truck to a fixed address. There’s always something a little renegade about the truck; we’re willing to forgive the absence of (some) niceties, the obligation to sit (or stand) in surroundings that are frequently less than tranquil. And then there’s the immediacy of having your plate or wrap handed down to you from the window — often from the cook him (or her)self. This is how Smoke Shack made its enviable barbecue reputation, operating out of a truck at the intersection of Nacogdoches and Loop 410. It’s still there and it’s still good. But inevitably, there’s also the urge to settle down. Smoke Shack’s owners found a place to do just that on Broadway near the Witte, taking over the former location of a Mexican restaurant and cleaning it up a tad. There are light fixtures fashioned from Mason jars. And there are lines. For the most part, Smoke Shack II manages to deal with them, and any delays seem to be tolerated by a midday audience blending families (with remarkably well-behaved kids) and other diners apparently not in much of a hurry. Also, for the most part the barbecue 16 | September 2014

passes muster. The brisket is still some of the best to be had in a town lying just to the west of Texas’ true BBQ belt, but it can also be inconsistent: moist, smoky and sporting that desirable rosy ring on one occasion; soggy and sadly without either bark or bite on another. (The good news is that the best plate was the most recent — maybe the pit just needed breaking in.) The sausage is good, the pulled pork less so — though it, too, has improved from the early days. The ribs are meaty, tender and sweetly glazed. The sauce also sports a little sweetness. But we would go to Smoke Shack for the fried okra alone, were smitten by the cheesy-chunky mashed potatoes and found the vinegar slaw with crumbled feta oddly appealing. Sandwiches, sliders and fried chicken justify the Southern Kitchen part of the name — that and the okra. If you were to ask us, though, we’d go back to the truck, even if it meant sacrificing some variety and eating faceto-grille with a Suburban. Happily, both establishments are in ’09, so one can rotate.

For a couple with sons soon leaving for college, downsizing to a home with potential for outdoor entertaining was paradise found. The family was not in a hurry to find a suitable home, but a cottage on a quiet street was a charmer that sealed the deal. A family room with vaulted ceiling and an open-concept kitchen with large, expansive windows that brought the outdoors into the gathering spaces enticed the couple. The back yard was small, but offered great opportunity for a pool and landscaping. In addition, a former detached garage situated in a corner of the property had been enclosed. It held great promise as guest quarters for family and friends. The homeowners enjoy gardening and began a full landscape restoration to the property. Flagstone steps descend from a wide-planked upper deck to a lower flagstone patio that is shaded by the wooden overhang. Matching flagstone decking surrounds a tropical pool that nests among clusters of ginger, Japanese blueberry, xylosma, philodendron, ferns and stately queen palms. A path meandering past the azure blue pool leads to a charming casita that beckons with its handmade red clay tile roof and whitewashed glass-paned French doors. www.78209magazine.com | 19

A KEEN SENSE OF STYLE AND ECLECTIC TASTES DRAW GUESTS TO THE CASUALLY ELEGANT INDOORS

Transporting fortunate guests to an oasis of comfort, the couple did extensive renovation to the former detached garage and storage area. The ceiling height was raised and clad in bead board set with exposed beams, giving the diminutive dwelling a handmade quality in every detail. Furnished with a luxurious bed covered in off-white and neutral linens, cozy upholstered chairs and scored cement flooring, the interiors are serene. By contrast, the spectacular view from the expansive French doors frames the sky, pool and lush vegetation. With such an alluring retreat only steps from the main house, the couple’s keen sense of style and eclectic tastes draw guests to the casually elegant indoors. A bespoke dining table with matching chairs, given to the couple by the husband’s family, is hand-carved with the homeowner’s three-letter monogram. “I was the only one in the family eligible to get them,” says the husband, who has the same initials as the family member for whom they were created. A dining alcove centered with a round table draped in a floor-length paisley cloth is paired with vintage dining chairs upholstered in dark green leather. A large Moroccan lantern and Brunschwig & Fils grasscloth with red background add drama to the setting. Keeping the vibrant tone moving through the home, a small space was transformed into a library. “I’ve always wanted a red library,” the homeowner states. She painted the walls red and decorated with family pieces and personal purchases. “We have picked up pieces over the years,” she says. “If we find something that we like, we find a place for it.”

MARCHING TO BEAT THE HEAT

THE ALAMO HEIGHTS BAND GEARS UP FOR THEIR FALL HALF-TIME SHOWS IN THE HEAT OF SUMMER

With extended periods of rehearsal in preparation for the upcoming competitive marching and football seasons, musicians spent time rehearsing marching and music fundamentals as well as learning the material for the 2014 field and football shows during the annual Summer Band Camp. Beyond rehearsals, Band Camp serves as an opportunity for the students to come together to get to know the other members of the Alamo Heights Band family. Bonding opportunities take place throughout the week, as sections spend time eating together, gathering at one anothers’ houses for social events and ultimately performing together for the first time as members of an outstanding band program. See the efforts of these summer musicians come to life during halftime under the Friday Night Lights!

‘09 CHEERS FOR CHEF DELLA CASA

Sometimes you win, and sometimes you claim second place! Congrats to executive chef Luca Della Casa of Silo and Nosh, who has kept us on the edge of our seats as we followed, cheered, voted and waited impatiently to see who would be crowned the next Food Network Star. Chef Luca Della Casa was born in Torino, Italy (we love the accent), and has a passion for cuisine and cooking, entertaining, teaching how to cook and sharing recipes inspired from his grandmother. Fans had a few words to share in their disbelief in his coming in as runner-up. Regardless, don’t look for chef Luca to slow down. He recently created the concept for Panzanella Pizzeria, serving artisan-style pizza and seasonal salads and wine and beer to go. Check for locations and opening dates at 111 W. Crockett St. on the River Walk, adjacent to Swig Martini Bar, and 401 Pearl Parkway. Despite all the cheers and tears, the rest of America is now discovering what we here in SA already knew — you are our CULINARY STAR in SA! Bravo!

More headaches in store if you live on Ivy Lane, Elmcourt or South Vandiver Road. Road construction will begin in the fall — basic upkeep and maintenance. Brace yourself for yet more detours and delays. Good news: After nearly one and a half years, much anticipated and traveled Hildebrand Avenue returned to a two-way street with improvements. Here’s what’s buzzing in 78209 this month.

GOINGS-ON IN 78209

ALTER’D STATE BOUTIQUE GIVES BACK

While dad is relaxing, mom can head a few doors down to score some fall finds at Alter’d State. Also located in the Alamo Quarry Crossing, this unique boutique has everything you need to look chic from head to toe. Clothes, shoes, accessories and cute gift items are all available at really good prices. But what we like even more than the on-trend fashions is the company’s commitment to giving back. According to their website, the company has donated more than $700,000 to various charities and sponsored more than 925 employee volunteer hours, and they consciously partner with companies like TOMS who support their efforts. The only thing better than shopping is shopping with a purpose. Visit www.altardstate.com for more information — and to check out the cute clothes!

IS PUBLIC SMOKING BAN IN ORDER?

Alamo Heights is considering the pros and cons of a public smoking ban. The city of San Antonio is one of approximately 80 Texas cities to enact a restriction on smoking in public places, but Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills and Olmos Park have yet to follow suit.

CONGESTION AT AHHS

Finally, with school back in session, the city is looking at ways to address the congestion east of the Alamo Heights High School that can impede the access of the city’s larger emergency vehicles. Lowering or removing medians along Vanderhoeven was proposed, but residents are balking, saying that the medians prevent student drivers from parking on the neighborhood roads. Longand short-term solutions are being discussed among city council members, fire and police officials and the Alamo Heights School District. In the meantime, temporary parking restrictions will be in place along sections of West Castano and Lamont. 30 | September 2014

TORCHY’S TACOS COME TO TOWN

If all that shopping and pampering leaves you hungry, head over to the newest culinary hot spot at the Shops at Lincoln Heights, the award-winning Torchy’s Tacos. This “Damn Good” taco joint originated in Austin, and San Antonio fans are ecstatic to see them hang a shingle here in the ‘hood. With a taco for everyone from the vegan to the carnivore, Torchy’s has made a name for itself serving up unusual combinations along with chips and award-winning salsa, breakfast tacos, sauces and sweets. Don’t forget to check out the “taco of the month,” too! Visit www.torchytacos.com for the menu and other information.

CLASSIC MOVIES IN THE GARDEN

What goes better with dinner than a movie? And what better place to see a movie than the picturesque grounds of the San Antonio Botanical Garden? All of San Antonio will enjoy the beautiful setting as a backdrop to classic movies such as An Affair to Remember on Sept. 19 and High Society on Sept. 26. Gates will open at 6:30 pm, with free admission. Prior to the shows, take the time to check out the new exhibits, including 27 sculptures made from nearly 500,000 Lego bricks, or the more than 20 different scarecrows made from everyday materials. For a complete listing of exhibits visit www.sabot.org.
