Editor’s Letter
August How is it already August and life still isn’t back to normal? The thing on most people’s minds is “what about school?” There are so many thoughts and ideas about what is best for the children. The bottom line is, what’s best for your child may not be what’s best for your neighbor’s child; and that’s ok. It’s wonderful that the schools have recognized that and have worked tirelessly to come up with a solution for everyone to feel comfortable. In this issue, the School News has spelled out exactly what AHISD and Saint Mary’s Hall’s plans are for starting back this fall. In this month’s Meet Your Neighbors, you’ll meet the Marvin family. They moved to 78209 15 years ago because of the excellent schools and to be closer to his family. When they found themselves facing some very difficult times they learned just how supportive the Alamo Heights community really is. Many people have gone above and beyond to help friends and neighbors during this pandemic. One Alamo Heights business owner recently jumped into action to help out the community. Charissa Barnes converted her business, the Inspection Station, on the Austin Highway, into a COVID-19 Antibody and Diagnostic Testing station. She recognized the need for more testing sites and quickly made it happen. Our dining article this month is on La Fonda Alamo Heights now located on Crownhill. ‘09ers have been enjoying their delicious Mexican food for many years since they first opened on Main Street in 1932. The locations and owners have changed through the years, but the food still tastes the same. Patrons go back weekly and order the same thing. And did I mention the margaritas? With restaurants only open to 50% capacity, many restaurant owners are having difficulty being able to keep their staff and make ends meet. 78209 is blessed with some amazing restaurants who could sure use everyone’s support right now. Be sure and check out the list of restaurants participating in this year’s Culinaria. Until next month, stay well,

Happenings In ‘09 Passengers “Robbed” in 50th anniversary of “The Great (Little) Train Robbery” BY RON AARON EISENBERG
San Antonio Zoo celebrated the 50th anniversary of “The Great (Little) Train Robbery” on Saturday, July 18, 2020, exactly 50 years to the day the San Antonio Zoo train was robbed at gunpoint in Brackenridge Park. Each Zoo Eagle Train ride hosted a reenactment of the event. Passengers aboard the Brackenridge Eagle winded through the park and into history when the miniature train was looted at gunpoint by two masked robbers. “The Great (Little) Train Robbery” was the last known train robbery in Texas. Passengers paid $10 each per ride as a fundraiser for the zoo, which is battling to remain in business amid the devastating COVID-19 coronavirus. As a 501(3) non-profit organization, San Antonio Zoo relies 100% on ticket sales, guest visits, grants, and donations.
Drive Through Zoo Returns
The San Antonio Zoo says it is all ears! “Our guests asked, and we listened!” San Antonio Zoo Drive-Thru Zoo, presented by Broadway Bank, is back, featuring Wild Connections the zoo’s larger than life LEGO sculpture exhibition. The Drive-Thru Zoo will be opened on select days beginning July 12. The zoo will even offer a special evening edition of Drive-Thru Zoo on select dates with convenient after work hours of 4 pm – 8 pm. Drive-Thru Zoo tickets are only available online, and a limited amount will be sold per day. The cost is $65.00 for non-annual pass holders/members per vehicle with an opening discount of $15 off using promo code: DRIVE. The cost for the zoo’s loyal annual 14 AUGUST 2020 | 78209magazine.com
pass holders/members will remain just $32 per vehicle. Proceeds from Drive-Thru Zoo go directly towards the care of our animals. The traditional zoo experience of walking thru the zoo will also be available on select dates. Guests can visit sazoo.org to purchase tickets. Drive-Thru Zoo offers driving at a sloth’s pace and hearing about the zoo’s history and animals. Guests will have the opportunity to buy and enjoy some of their favorite zoo snacks, beverages, and zoo gifts will be brought to vehicles giving guests the opportunity to purchase food and souvenirs along the route. The vehicle size will be limited to 224” long x 81” wide x 74” high (approximate size of a Chevy Suburban.)
New Restaurant with “Jewish Flavor” Coming to Broadway Corridor Adam Lampinstein, 40, and his wife, Perla, are opening a trendy new restaurant at 4025 Broadway, just south of Hildebrand. The couple had operated “Ripe,” a successful restaurant in El Paso, for ten years before selling it and moving to San Antonio. Lampinstein told 78209 Magazine, “I wanted to open a true neighborhood diner for the area with a Jewish flare. We’re not opening a Jewish deli, but we will be offering several traditional deli items like smoked pastrami and smoked fish plus bagels and cream cheese.” He suggests people think of The Hayden as a modern version of an old diner. He picked his middle name for the restaurant’s name – The Hayden. Initially, The Hayden will be open for breakfast and lunch, but plans call for adding dinner too. The Lampinsteins live in 78209. Perla teaches Spanish immersion at Woodridge Elementary School. They have a five-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son. They hope to open in September, or as soon as the state will permit at least 75% occupancy for restaurants, as Texas continues to battle the COVID-19 virus.
Ghost Bus Re-routed in Northwood Neighborhood Folks living along several streets in the Northwood area are cheering a longawaited decision by VIA Metropolitan Transit to change the route for a bus that snaked along streets in their neighborhood, but always seemed empty. In fact, some neighbors had dubbed it the Northwood Ghost Bus. As one neighbor told 78209 Magazine, “We could not understand why an empty bus roamed our streets. “For the longest time,” she added, “complaints to VIA went unanswered. But now we see signs on several bus stops alerting passengers that Bus Route 647 is being rerouted. So, thank you, Via.” The bus will no longer travel though Northwood on Vandiver, Oak Glen, Kenilworth, and Northridge. Instead, it will use Eisenhauer and North New Braunfels.

Testing is where it starts, and based on the results from testing, other life decisions can be made. I believe if people want to get a test, they should be able to get a test.
“I really enjoy the inspection business and the convenience of it,” she said. “I loved that my dad exposed me to so many different aspects of business life.” Since 1985, Official Inspection Stations throughout San Antonio have offered a fast, thorough state inspection for your vehicle. You drive up, and within 9 minutes it’s completed. But since the COVID-19 pandemic has swept the nation, Barnes has been offering even more convenience and service to the community. “In January, I started researching the Coronavirus when it was in China, and it hadn’t spread yet,” Charissa said. “I was very concerned about the safety and health of my family. As I saw it start to migrate to the United States, I was compelled to do something. My calling was to help my community. I’m an expert in drive-thru convenient testing. So, I thought, we’re going to open a COVID testing center.” Barnes worked diligently with her team to devise a plan. Convenient testing meant multiple things, including using a quality lab for testing analysis that could deliver results in one to two business days, versus seven to 10. It also meant allowing people to stay in their cars, and the flexibility to be able to get in for testing the same day they began having symptoms. “There are three spaces in everyone’s life,” she said. “Your home, your work environment, your car. It’s nice to stay in
one of your spaces when worried and going through this experience. You can listen to a podcast, or have your kids in the back seat. You roll down the window for the test, then roll it right back up.” The COVID-19 testing center is located at the company’s Austin Highway location. Those who need testing can choose from a diagnostic test if they have symptoms, an antibody test if they believe they may have already been ill, or a combo test kit that covers both. The FDA compliant tests range from $74 to $223, and results are back within a few short days from a CLIA certified lab. You also don’t need a doctor’s referral. Those interested in testing simply go online, docu sign some paperwork, and make the appointment. “I’ve been concerned and frustrated with all of these hurdles people have to jump over to get these tests,” Barnes said. “Testing is where it starts, and based on the results from testing, other life decisions can be made. I believe if people want to get a test, they should be able to get a test.” Since a drive through testing center has never existed before the pandemic, Barnes said things are moving at warp speed with growth and expansion. Seeing an even more significant need in the community as businesses began to reopen, Barnes has now established a mobile COVID testing center as well that can dispatch out to companies who want to have their employees all tested in one visit. 78209magazine.com | AUGUST 2020 17

For the Marvins, 78209 Means Support and Friendship BY CHRISTIE CUTHBERT PHOTOGRAPHY BY AL RENDON

hen Gary and Jennifer Marvin moved to Alamo Heights 15 years ago, they chose the area because it was a good place to raise a family, and Gary’s family was here. They didn’t realize 14 years later the community they had chosen because of good schools and proximity to the city would be such a huge support during an extremely difficult time. In 2019, their oldest daughter, Lexi, 23, was involved in a head-on car accident, leading to a long and painful road to recovery. “We’ve had some dire moments as a family, but having so many close friends that gathered around us and helped us through those situations isn’t something you see in many neighborhoods outside of 78209,” Jennifer said. “We feel very fortunate.” Now graduated from Texas Lutheran University, Lexi is studying for her MCAT, hoping to pursue medical school. “She’s always been our more rough and tumble kid,” Gary said. “She was always involved in sports and even holds a few records for soccer. We are so proud of her for how hard she has worked, considering all she has been through.” Rounding out the family is the Marvin’s youngest daughter, Samantha, who adores her big sister, reading, the arts and has been in several Woodlawn Theater productions. She’s headed to TMI Episcopal School in the fall and has enjoyed having her sister home during the recent quarantine. “All four of us have been here in the house together since March,” Gary said. “As a family, we love to fish, hunt, and hike, but lately, it’s been more about board games and home improvement projects. Right now, our girls are out back working on tearing up our old deck. There’s been a lot of life learning going on here.” During shelter in place, the Marvin girls have also taken up cooking, and Jennifer said she and Gary are cherishing the time together. “We’ve all really gotten to know each other better,” she said. When the Marvins aren’t in quarantine, Gary works as the head of admissions for San Antonio Academy, and Jennifer is a software engineer at USAA. They love traveling together as a family and try to make at least two or three trips a year. Whether it’s to enjoy the beach at Port Aransas or snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef together in Australia, they love adventure.
We’ve had some dire moments as a family, but having so many close friends that gathered around us and helped us through those situations isn’t something you see in many neighborhoods outside of 78209 “Even when we just have a long three-day weekend, we like to take off and explore state or national parks,” Gary said. Coming back to Alamo Heights was a sort of homecoming for Gary, who grew up in the area. But for Jennifer, it was scary to leave her small, farming community in Connecticut. She was pleasantly surprised when she fell in love with the area, and now can’t see herself anywhere else. “Coming from a tiny community in Connecticut that’s quiet and country; moving to San Antonio worried me a little bit at first,” she said. “When you think of a city, you think ‘loud’ or ‘crowded,’ but that wasn’t the case. I cannot believe how much I love it here. There’re so many close friends nearby. You don’t feel like you’re in the city, but you’re so close to everything. It’s the best of both worlds in one neighborhood.” 78209magazine.com | AUGUST 2020 19

Good Living
Staying Healthy Has Long-Term Effects In a time where the couch has become king and staying at home has become the ultimate excuse to give up on our goals, it has been harder than ever for people to find the motivation (understandably so) to work on their own health. That is where Pure Barre and other fitness facilities comes into play. Health is, after all, 3 dimensional...we need it emotionally, physically, and mentally. Everyone is searching for answers right now, and it seems that the best one has been in front of us all along. We had a client who wandered into our studio and expressed up front that she wouldn’t be able to afford it after the introductory offer. Boutique fitness, after all, seems outrageously overpriced. However, at the end of that same introductory month, she came into the studio with a smile, beaming from ear to ear, and credit card delicately pinched between two fingers. She said “you’ll never believe this, but I actually changed my insurance plan because for the first month in what seems like forever, I did not need any visits to the clinic. The money I’m going to save on my insurance and healthcare is way more than this membership.” With that, she slapped the credit card onto the desk and signed up for 12 more months. You see, what seems “overpriced” to one person actually looks like (or transforms into) an incredible investment to another. If only we were all so aware of the long-term ramifications of what appears to be short term investments! 22 AUGUST 2020 | 78209magazine.com
That is the absolute beauty of finding exercise; but not just any exercise, the style of movement that speaks to you. Staying healthy has never been about a specific gym or diet, but rather it has been about finding the “right thing” that allows you to stay focused on what is needed internally when everything else externally is seemingly out of whack. As we age, our muscle density decreases rapidly and studies have shown that moderate, yet consistent, strength training can easily help slow that process significantly. Additionally, we all know about how useful exercise is for our mental state, and the health benefits are undeniable. It starts small; make the choice to
do something physical daily. Reach out to a local fitness studio and see what their options are. You will not only be investing in yourself, but also in the livelihoods of so many whose goals in life are to help others. When
we work on our personal health, the snowball effect takes place and we are able to make tangible impacts on the health of our community at large. Do one thing today that your future self will thank you for.

Alamo HeightsLeaders Ponder Strategic Plan BY EDMOND ORTIZ
Alamo Heights and most other cities are preparing their fiscal year 2021 (FY21) budgets. While officials of some communities expect some impact from the COVID-19 pandemic, others are hopeful there will be little effect and look to tackle long-planned initiatives. In June, the Alamo Heights City Council studied chief objectives for FY21, including repairs to the city’s swimming pool bathrooms, a cost-of-living-adjustment for city employees, and a potential change in city newsletter distribution. Other planned city strategic initiatives in FY21 include continuing flexible work options for city employees during the ongoing pandemic. Along those lines, the fire department is looking for ways to maintain fire prevention programming for residents while providing social distancing and other safety measures for personnel and residents. Paramedics plan to develop a program focused around the civilian response to active shooter/attack events. 24 AUGUST 2020 | 78209magazine.com
They also hope to establish a geriatric emergency management program. The Police Department plans to install a new computerized radio system. They have plans to enhance animal care services by adding one part-time staffer, a cost analysis for kenneling, and studying options for a new transport vehicle. The council spent time looking at long-range plans. For example, 2022 will mark the 100th anniversary of Alamo Heights’ incorporation as a city. Local leaders have indicated there would be opportunities for a centennial celebration. Alamo Heights looks to continue working with Texas Department of Transportation on engineering ahead of Broadway’s proposed redesign. Additionally, the city plans to upgrade firefighters’ equipment, fix sidewalks and part of the local sewer system, and revamp the community development website to improve users’ efficiency.

The city offered a virtual public information meeting in June about the project. At the time, the city was determining which roads to include in its base bid for advertising. Those base bid streets include Burr Duval from Stillwell to Aylesbury Hill, Morningside/Winchester from Wiltshire to Rittiman Road, Ridgemont from Clement Circle to Vandiver, and Elizabeth from Beverly to Harry Wurzbach. If the bid were to come in under available budget, alternative streets would include the Morningside/Exeter
intersection, and the Geneseo/Eldon intersection. Planned improvements on these streets will range from partial reconstruction to full-depth reconstruction. Some of these roads will see sidewalk improvements and new curbs. The Geneseo/Eldon intersection will see only improvements in signage and pavement markings. The total preliminary base bid was estimated at $1.03 million. Adding the alternate streets to the bid would cost an extra $63,000. If all works out, construction will happen between November 2020 and April 2021.
New Alamo Heights Post Office Opens 1107 Austin Highway is the new address for the relocated Alamo Heights Post Office. The new site, which opened in July, replaces the U.S. Postal Service (USPS)
service center that operated at 4801 Broadway for about 50 years. According to reports, H-E-B declined to renew the lease to the space that USPS had been occupying next to what is now
H-E-B Central Market. The new post office is larger than the old space, and features non-stop lobby access for mail drop boxes and people who have PO boxes there.

YOUR PPP QUESTIONS ANSWERED “Kim Ford and theKFORDgroup team have been instrumental in keeping our agency abreast of the ongoing changes regarding the Paycheck Protection Program. They also designed an Excel spreadsheet specific to tracking the company’s payroll and expenses for this program. Without their continuous guidance, our agency would have had to spend hours reading the continuous revisions of the bill and try to understand all the provisions. We are so appreciative of their knowledge and ongoing explanation of the revisions.” – Shirley Crandall, President of Crandall & Associates Insurance

RETURN TO LEARN We have a long tradition of excellence in AHISD, and this year will continue that tradition! Our administrative team, teachers, and staff have all been working diligently to welcome our students back on August 17. The health and well-being of our AHISD community are at the forefront of all our decisionmaking. We recognize that this is an uncertain time in San Antonio. While we would love for all of our students to be on campus this fall, we realize that some students may not be able to join us for various reasons. We are committed to providing an engaging learning experience for our face-toface learners and a robust online learning experience for our Heights at Home learners. We are excited for another year to begin. Our planning for fall face-to-face learning prioritizes health and wellbeing. We are implementing a layered approach to safety that includes multiple health commitments to mitigate the transmission of COVID-19 and to encourage a healthy campus community. Our facilities will look and operate differently, in support of our health commitments, than they have in the past. The health and safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority. AHISD will offer both face-toface and remote (Heights at Home) learning options for all students. AHISD has created these plans with the understanding that information is subject to change based on state and local governmental directives about health or education. We recognize the COVID-19 pandemic is dynamic and ever-changing and continues to provide incredible challenges as we move forward with planning around the opening of school for the 20202021 school year. We are grateful for our educational

community’s patience as we waited on local and state guidance to finalize our plans for August, receiving initial guidance from TEA about health and safety guidelines on July 7, working diligently to make plans based on those directions. Due to the guidance we received from TEA and the local San Antonio health orders issued by Bexar County Health on July 17, we will now open schools remotely for three weeks beginning on August 17. In addition to protecting our students and staff’s health and wellness during a time of “moderate and sustained” community transmission of COVID-19, this three-week transition time of remote learning will support us by: • -allowing us to proceed with the approved calendar start day of August 17 (instead of moving our start date to later in September and extending the year into June) • -providing additional time for comprehensive training for our staff around COVID- 19 health and safety protocols • -extending time to more extensively prepare classrooms and campuses for the return of students in a face-to-face learning environment During these three weeks, our staff will offer students remote learning based on our AHISD Remote Learning Plan. Students who have enrolled in our Heights at Home option for the first nine weeks will work with their Heights at Home teacher as originally planned. All students who were enrolled in our face-to-face option will work remotely with their homeroom teachers (PK-5) and through their planned schedule (6-12). More details will follow for our students and their families in early August. Extensive feedback from parents, students, and teachers regarding our AHISD Continuous Learning Plan in the spring has allowed us to make improvements in structure, expectations, and implementation of remote learning. We knew that
we needed to make plans to implement this remote platform throughout the year as we experience times of facility closure or quarantine. This planning will serve us well to start school in our updated and improved remote platform. All families will be provided with the materials needed to implement the remote learning for these three weeks, whether that be devices, hotspots, or classroom At-Home Learning Kits. Students and families should watch for more information to come regarding the distribution of materials. We want to be back in our schools face-to-face with our students and will continue to make plans to fully open our facilities in a way that prioritizes the health and safety of our students and staff after Labor Day. As the public health situation unfolds, we will continue to navigate and act on decisions that are in the best interest of In July, will our AHISD school community. WE ARE HERE! Throughout the spring and summer, the greater AHISD family has been at work, supporting students and families as the need arose during this time of distance. Meals were prepared by our AHISD Food Service staff for weekly pick up at the Alamo Heights Junior School Cafeteria and delivered by our bus drivers and transportation team. Our community donated HEB cards for families in our neighborhoods who needed a little extra support. The Snack Pak-4-Kids Program donated snacks to students to help support food insecurities over the weekends. AHHS Theater Arts students collected food donated by our Alamo Heights neighbors and donated it to the San Antonio Food Bank. AHISD staff members volunteered to support food distribution sponsored by the San Antonio Food Bank within our community in partnership with the City of Alamo Heights and the Alamo Heights Police Department. These are just a few of the “AH-mazing ways that our entire community came together in empathy, love, and support, to take care of each other. Through it all, we remain AH STRONG! 30 AUGUST 2020 | 78209magazine.com

The Saint Mary’s Hall Speech & Debate Team
SMH SPEECH & DEBATE TEAM SHINES AT NATIONAL TOURNAMENT The Saint Mary’s Hall (SMH) Speech & Debate Program officially closed the 2019-2020 school year in memorable fashion. Due to the pandemic, in June, the team participated virtually in the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) National Tournament, one of the most important tournaments of the year. Not only did the team set a school record for the number of students who qualified for the tournament, but they also set a school record in sweepstakes placement. For the first time in school history, SMH was named a School of Outstanding Distinction for placing in the top 10 in the nation, an honor representative of less than 1% of the 1,322 schools competing at the tournament. This award is only available to programs that advance entries in both speech and debate categories. Class of 2020 graduate Shilpa Gunuganti was recognized 32 AUGUST 2020 | 78209magazine.com
for her contributions to the speech and debate community and the broader community of San Antonio as a Student of the Year finalist. Shilpa is the third Baron to be recognized with this distinction. Director of Fine Arts Bethany Bohall was recognized as the NSDA National High School Administrator of the Year for her dedicated and enthusiastic support of the SMH Speech & Debate Program. SMH had three students compete in final rounds of competition. Considering approximately 5,000 students compete at the NSDA National Tournament, placing in the top six is a significant accomplishment. For the past seven years, SMH has accumulated the second most students performing in final rounds in acting and public speaking events. The SMH Speech & Debate Program develops students’ poise, confidence, and creative thinking through the study of acting, public speaking, persuasion, and argument.
SAINT MARY’S HALL ANNOUNCES SCHOOL REOPENING PLAN In July, Saint Mary’s Hall (SMH) announced the ONE|SMH: The 2020-2021 School Year plan, addressing the reopening of school for the 2020-2021 academic year. SMH has defined a three-phased approach to the school year and a staggered return to campus. The SMH Campus Reopening Task Force has based this plan on evolving standards of best practices outlined by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Texas Education Agency (TEA), National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), their accrediting body the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS), as well as community health regulations from local government and the State of Texas. The school will continue to assess current pandemic conditions and respond by shifting appropriately into one of our three models: ONE|SMH Learning Phases: • ONE|SMH Virtual (Red): Distance learning for all students with faculty teaching remotely and from classrooms • ONE|SMH Hybrid (Yellow): An open, in-person campus for students and faculty with concurrent use of virtual and online learning for those who, for whatever reason, opt for off-campus, online instruction • ONE|SMH On Campus (Green): A return to the SMH experience we all knew before the pandemic In mid-July, SMH made the decision to begin the 20202021 school year in the ONE|SMH Virtual (Red) phase. This decision was based on the primary concern for the health and safety of students and faculty. Classes will begin virtually on August 17 with the aim of bringing students and faculty back to campus the week of September 8. To give the school the maximum amount of flexibility, in each learning phase the school has outlined schedules, policies, guidelines, and procedures that will allow for them to move between phases to adjust to the current pandemic conditions. SMH is ready to bring students to campus or successfully educate them virtually. 78209magazine.com | AUGUST 2020 33

Her husband was being deployed. I spent probably a half-hour with them, and the dad thanked me so many times because it got them thinking about other things,” Bonnie says. Airport staffers implemented the idea after learning how well it worked at the Los Angeles International Airport. Pups n' Planes has been reducing blood pressure and turning frowns upside down for six years. “In the car, she knows that we are almost at the airport. She gets so excited! Her job is to make people smile. She does that job.” And if you saw Bella, you would smile, too. The girl team also spends time at the airport USO, softening the loneliness and longing of our troops, so familiar to military life. While Bella offers kisses, Canine Explosive Detection Supervisor Sgt. Andres Lopez, and his police dog Keyno, provide safety and security. “We are there to make sure that the traveling public is safe, the dog makes that any threats associated with aviation there aren’t real threats,” says the airport K9 police officer. Lopez and Keyno “nose around," sniffing out threats that “Lobster” or “Lobo” as foster mom, Sara, called him, suffered a terrible skin could come from a parked car, a suitcase, or a person. “Dogs disease. The harsh existence of life on the streets means illness for many strays. “Lobster” (“Lobo”) got his name because of his raw, red skin, gnawed at by a parasitic mite, that caused mange. He was matched with foster volunteer Sara, arriving at her home hairless, swollen, and crusted with sores. Sara went at “Lobo” with all sorts of medications, and he was healed and transformed. Forty Years Is Not Nearly Enough For New Terrell Hills Police Chief BY: RON EISENBERG
W
hen Roger Mangum retired from the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) in 2008, after 27 years on the force, he thought he’d had enough of law enforcement. It was time, he thought, to move on with his life. In one sense, he moved on from SAPD to the Terrell Hills Police Force.
To understand how that happened, it is helpful to know how he ended up a cop in the first place. Mangum was born in San Antonio in 1958. He grew up in a neighborhood near Woodlawn Lake and graduated from Jefferson High School. “Back in the day, you could ride your bike everywhere and not worry about it. Those were different times,” he says. 36 AUGUST 2020 | 78209magazine.com
“Like most kids then and now, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after high school, let alone what I wanted to be. But at Jefferson, you had to decide before graduation what you intended to do.” The career choice for Magnum came after a career day presentation by an SAPD officer. Magnum explained, “I went to a career day presentation, and an SAPD officer came out
and talked to us about the job of a police officer. One sentence stuck out, a cop’s job comes down to every day you go to work, and there’s something different. Every day is a different set of circumstances.” That resonated with him. “I said to myself, that’s what I want to do.” And he made it happen. He was too young to apply to the police academy right out of high school, so Magnum joined the United States Air Force Reserves as a Fire Protection Specialist. Magnum and his wife, Mollie Castillo, married on December 15, 1979, at the base chapel on the old Brooks Air Force Base. “We met as members of the San Antonio Police Explorers Program. We both had an interest in becoming police officers.” And while he pursued that interest, his bride went into retail and became a manager at Montgomery Ward. She eventually earned her master’s degree in finance and now works for Clear Channel Outdoor. “She was the smart one,” he laughs. In 1980, he was accepted into the SAPD Police Academy. It was a six-month program. He says his experience as a cadet at the Academy reinforced why he was choosing police work. “We figured out what police officers really do – protecting the line between the bad guys and the good guys.” Like most cadets, he joined Patrol after graduation. “I liked being out in a vehicle patrolling around; we always rode single back then.” He enjoyed making his own decisions, handling calls, solving problems, and doing something different daily. “I spent 12 years in Patrol, and then had an opportunity to transfer to the training academy, came along, and I took it.” Mangum spent the last 15 years at SAPD as the Patrol Tactics and Use of Force Coordinator. “I really enjoyed teaching cadets the fundamentals of law enforcement. I learned so much being a police officer on the streets.” That’s where he learned about human nature, stress, patience, compassion, empathy, use of force; you name it. Taking that knowledge to the cadets at the Academy was very special to him. “When I retired in 2008, I knew it was time to retire – I knew I was getting fatigued and I needed some space and time. I figured this is it.” And it felt like the right decision to him. “Then,” Mangum smiles and says, “reality set in and I got bored and my wife told me, ‘you are driving me crazy.’” He knew then Terrell Hills Police Chief William Foley. They met. And shortly after that, Magnum joined the Terrell Hills police department as a patrol officer. He’d found a second home in law enforcement. Foley is now Terrell Hills City Manager. In announcing Magnum’s selection as Chief of Police, Terrell Hills highlighted some of the courses he has completed in recent years. Chief Mangum has a Master Police Officer Certificate and is a Class 77 graduate of the Leadership Command College. He has completed the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy and the Texas Police Chief Association Developing Leadership Course, among other leadership courses. He and his wife have a son and three daughters, who are all grown. And, they are the proud grandparents of four girls. When Chief Magnum is away from the office, he loves to be walking a Civil War battleground. History is his passion. And his bucket list features dozens of battlegrounds he hopes to tour in the coming years. As for retirement now, after 40-years in law enforcement, his attitude is evident, did that, didn’t like it.

GROWING BOLD FAITH These days we are humbled by our vulnerability and what we can’t control. In response we can choose a path to live victoriously by trusting God at new levels. We do feel the health crisis and financial pain caused by COVID-19. But we are more than this. We see God as the ultimate reality. Christ conquered death so we can live victoriously. We can see ourselves as victors more than victims. COVID-19 is our current context, but not the greatest reality. With growing faith, we can see what is most true and thereby most real. We can feel God giving us the courage to live with a bold humility during this era of COVID-19. God reveals His truth in the midst of our circumstances, “supplying us with what we need to be strengthened by what is demanded.” (Phil. 4:13,19) Les Hollon, PhD Senior Pastor

La Fonda Alamo Heights Serving Generations of Diners One Enchilada at a Time BY MEREDITH KAY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AL RENDON 46 AUGUST 2020 | 78209magazine.com
T
here is no shortage of Mexican restaurants in San Antonio. There is one on just about every corner in town. Some specialize in cuisine from just one region of Mexico, and some feature traditional Tex-Mex, but there is one Mexican restaurant that has stood the test of time, and has been serving consistently delicious food for many generations.
La Fonda Alamo Heights is currently located off the access road of 410 at Broadway, but its roots date back to 1932 when Virginia Berry opened the first La Fonda restaurant with her family on Main Street. Today, her original recipes are still being used, and the restaurant’s traditions and standards of excellence are being upheld by their current management company, Frontier Enterprises, the same company behind San Antonio’s beloved Jim’s restaurants. Upon entering the restaurant, you’ll be greeted warmly by the friendly staff who treat everyone like they are family. La Fonda’s atmosphere is inviting, incorporating the warm colors and cultural décor of old world Mexico with colorful tile, heavy wood accents and beautiful handwrought iron pieces. The restaurant also features a gorgeous bar in the center of the space where expert mixologists create some of the best margaritas in town, using only fresh squeezed lime juice. However, the star of the show is, of course, the food. Each dish is made fresh to order and served with pride. You’ll find all of your Mexican food favorites on the menu at La Fonda, and you will not be disappointed with anything that you order. You must start with the Platos Pequeños, and order a few appetizers for the table. The Mini Street Tacos are outstanding with incredibly tender chicken or beef fajita meat served with cilantro, onion and queso fresco, and topped with their delicious tomatillo and avocado sauce. Another favorite is Rick’s Special Queso topped with seasoned ground beef picadillo, guacamole and pico de gallo. They also offer an outstanding Shrimp Cocktail Mexicana and Ceviche that will make you feel like you are on the beach in Mexico, at least for a moment. As you order your second margarita, you can dive into the main entrées that will arrive sizzling hot. La Fonda uses only the most
tender Angus steak for their fajitas, and for those who love chicken, you can’t go wrong with their Mirasol Especial. Seasoned to perfection and grilled over an open flame, the chicken breast is then smothered in queso, and topped with pico de gallo. It is decadent and delicious, and will quickly become one of your favorite meals in San Antonio. For those who have a hard time deciding on just one Mexican favorite, you’ll have to make a selection from the Favoritas de Casa section of the menu, where you can mix and match your favorites to create your perfect Mexican plate. Their most popular special is the Regular Plate, which features one of the best cheese enchiladas in town, a tamale, their not-to-be-missed chili con carne and rice and beans. This one covers it all and you will definitely not want to share. They also feature a daily special, Monday through Friday, and Happy Hour, Monday through Thursday from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. La Fonda is taking all mandatory COVID-19 precautions with extra cleaning procedures, social distance dining, as well as take-out and curbside orders. The restaurant also has a beautiful and very comfortable patio area with plenty of fans circulating the air to keep diners as cool as possible, but ordering a margarita doesn’t hurt either. The staff and management at La Fonda are truly committed to creating the best possible dining experience and it shows in their friendly attitudes and superior service. The restaurant started as a neighborhood Mexican café nearly 90 years ago, and you’ll still feel that local pride shine through. Generations of families have grown up with La Fonda, and the traditions of excellence are still being maintained today. So, if you’ve grown up dining at La Fonda, then you’ll want to return again and again, but if you haven’t had the pleasure of discovering this San Antonio icon, then make sure to add it to the top of your list muy pronto. 78209magazine.com | AUGUST 2020 47
