Editor’s Letter

January Happy New Year! I was looking back at the January 2020 issue and noticed that the first line of my Editor’s letter was, “2020 sounds a little strange, doesn’t it?” At that point, I don’t think any of us could’ve ever dreamed just how strange it would really be! Although there were some good things that came out of 2020, now that it’s 2021, hopefully 2020 will just become a distant memory. There’s a new car wash in 78209. Our Business Profile spotlights The Wash Tub on Sunset. They do a great job of taking care of your car and making it sparkly clean. Aside from the great car washes, I love being able to pick up last-minute gifts or cards while I’m waiting on my car. You’ll meet the Deaver family in this issue. Ben and Gwynn Deaver love living in Alamo Heights. Even though their two children have quite a while before they get to high school, the Deaver’s have fully embraced the football games and other activities. It’s the sense of community that they love so much. This month we are featuring a quaint little neighborhood Italian restaurant that serves up the most delicious pizza made in their Napoleon pizza oven. Braza Brava is known not just for their pizza but for a wide variety of Italian food, all made with the freshest ingredients. If you order the fettuccini alfredo, you are in for a real treat. But you’ll have to see it for yourself; I don’t want to spoil it for you. Wishing one another a prosperous and healthy new year holds a whole new meaning now. I’m not sure what is in store for us in 2021, but I do know that we’re holding our families a little closer and not taking the little things for granted. That’s something wonderful that has come out of all of this. Wishing you good health, love, joy and peace in the new year,

In the non-profit sector, Ron was the first male in America to serve as executive director of a Rape Crisis Center. He and his wife, Gina Galaviz Eisenberg, live in San Antonio. They adopted three children: Reagan, born in 2011, and twin boys, Carter & Kennedy, born in 2013. He also has two older sons, Mitch and Chris.

Half Texan on her mother’s side, Meredith was born and raised in Southern California, where she graduated from Pepperdine University with a degree in Advertising. She has called San Antonio home for over 25 years now and is raising a son and a daughter as a single mom with a pack of rescue dogs. An incurable foodie with an insatiable case of wanderlust, she has travelled the world, and had the opportunity to live in Germany and France, where she was opening cast member at EuroDisney. She is passionate about writing, cooking, soccer, landscaping, music of all genres, and never misses an opportunity to go to a concert. Meredith is usually the loudest person in the room, and she is always up for new adventures and experiences.

Berit Mason has been a reporter - anchor for WOAI 1200 AM Radio, a contributor to the San Antonio Business Journal, a writer for SA Scene magazine, and for San Antonio Woman. She has been writing the “Ask Roxie” column since 2016. Berit also worked in T.V., as a reporter - anchor in West Texas and in Waco, where she was a RIAS Berlin Commission German - American Exchange Journalist, starting her career interning with CNN Washington. She is a frequent traveler to Scandinavia, where her mother was from. Her father was an author of military aviation history. Berit loves animals, and was raised in a family who preferred to acquire the family dog, from among the many homeless pups roaming San Antonio streets.

When I raise the camera and focus on a room’s view, I am composing to express its owners’ personality in the best light.” He has had more than a dozen major solo exhibits, and his work is in such permanent collections as the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution and the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago.

It’s the ultimate Pas de Deux when 15-year-old AHHS Sophomore Kate Thomas makes not one but two splashes overseas. First, the Children’s Ballet of San Antonio (CBSA) student was recently named a finalist in the prestigious Prix de Lausanne competition held annually in Lausanne, Switzerland. This nationally renowned event is a resumebuilding opportunity for young dancers ages 15-18 who wish to pursue a professional career in classical ballet. Only 83 of the coveted finalist positions are available, and with close to 400 of the top dancers across 43 countries vying for the top spots, the competition is fierce. Thanks to years of training with The Children’s Ballet of San Antonio under the watchful eye of founder and fivetime Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) Outstanding Teacher award winner Vanessa Bessler, Thomas was ready. to attend the Royal Ballet of London, where she was scheduled to begin in September. Due to Covid restrictions, however, Thomas had to postpone her studies abroad until January. “The chance to study in London and expand my knowledge of ballet is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” she says with enthusiasm. “When I found out I was accepted, I didn’t believe it was real.” Thomas has been dancing with Bessler and the CBSA since the age of seven, and in that time, has received numerous scholarships to such prestigious schools as the Bolshoi Ballet, Ballet West in Utah, Houston Ballet, and the Colorado Ballet Academy, to name a few. A three-time first place winner at the YAGP Regionals, the talented performer was among the top 24 dancers in the world invited to the final round at Lincoln Center, New York for several years.

Green Vegetarian Leaving Moving from the Pearl to Alamo Quarry Market

Green Vegetarian Cuisine is moving to the Alamo Quarry Market. It plans to open the new location the second week of January. The restaurant had been at the Pearl at 200 E. Grayson Street, where parking has been a major hassle for customers. With its lease ending, the time seemed right for the move. Green will be taking over the 2,800 square feet space formerly occupied by 29 Wine Bar at the Quarry. Green’s is also located at the Alon, on NW Military Highway. Mike Behrend owns Green Vegetarian. He is also the co-owner of Earth Burger, which features veggie burgers.

Local Bakery to open Full-Service Restaurant in Quarry Village

La Panadería recently announced plans to open a fullservice restaurant in the Quarry Village. David and Jose Cáceres, the brothers behind the popular San Antonio bakery and restaurant, La Panadería, told 78209 Magazine, the new restaurant will feature authentic Mexicocity dishes. El Morita Kitchen will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It will also offer a Sunday brunch. The brothers will reveal the new menu and location for the restaurant in the next few months. La Panadería currently has two locations, 8305 Broadway near Loop 410 and downtown at 301 E. Houston Street.

In the Loop Robbery and Assault in Terrell Hills Leads to Warning from Alamo Heights Police Chief

The Terrell Hills Police Department is actively investigating an assault and robbery that took place around 10 pm on December 7. Terrell Hills police reported, “The victim was walking in the 300 blk. of Terrell Rd. when he was approached by two subjects who tried to start a conversation. The victim crossed the street to maintain social distance when the subjects followed him, and forcibly demanded his property. The victim was physically assaulted during the process and his property taken. The subjects fled on foot.” In light of that incident, Alamo Heights police chief Richard Pruitt issued guidelines for Alamo Heights residents who are outside after dark. “While this appears to be an isolated incident, residents are reminded to stay vigilant and alert while walking, especially after dark.” Chief Pruitt urged residents to report suspicious activity immediately. “If you’re ever approached by someone who makes you feel unsafe or otherwise find yourself in a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable, do not hesitate to call 911 immediately.” 16 JANUARY 2021 | 78209magazine.com

Suggestions for Keeping Safe: • Jog or walk with a friend or friends. There tends to be safety in numbers. • Leave word. Tell somebody or leave a note at home about where you plan to go and how long you plan to be out. That way, your loved ones will know to look for you if needed. • Avoid secluded areas, especially at night. If you’re out and about after dark, stick to well-lit and populated areas. Carry a flashlight or other illumination. • Always carry proper identification and your cell phone. You never know when you may need to call for help in the event of an emergency for you or another. Your ID will provide first responders with your name and address and other identifiers if you are incapacitated. • Stay alert if using headphones, cell phones, etc. They can be distracting, and you may not identify problems or dangers that are coming your way. • Visually assess your surroundings frequently.

Founded in the 1980s by Al and Dorothy Vizza, the Wash Tub now has more than 25 locations throughout San Antonio. They acquired the site at Hildebrand and Broadway in 1990, then opened the Austin Highway location in 2004. In September, a third ‘09 location was opened at 323 West Sunset, and what’s fun about bringing your car for a cleaning is the sense of community you’ll find. Many Wash Tub employees have been serving the community for decades, and they also employ a lot of ‘09 teens, so customers may run into a neighbor or high schooler from down the street.

“We are extremely fortunate to have a lot of team members with 10, 15, 20, and 25 plus years of experience working with us in all positions,” Executive Vice President Javier Rodriguez said. “We always have a base of young team members, a lot of times it is their first job, or a job while they are working through high school or college.” Since the pandemic began, the Wash Tub has made procedural changes in the way it cleans. When a guest arrives, the inside of their car is fogged out with a product that disinfects their vehicle before the staff begins working. Once the car has been cleaned, all vehicle touchpoints have been redisinfected before delivery back to the guest, including the door handles, steering wheel, gear shift, and engine start. The guest’s keys are also disinfected and handed to them on a paper towel. “We have found that this disinfection process really gives our guests some peace of mind when they come to get their car washed,” Rodriguez said. “We are mindful and take pride in keeping our guest’s car safe and disinfected.” The Wash Tub also helps with fundraising opportunities for schools and youth groups, offering gift card sales with 50 percent profit rates. The company also gives back to many local non-profits, including the Salvation Army, Special Olympics Texas, Down Syndrome Association of South Texas, San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, and the San Antonio Food Bank.

en Deaver had only been on a few dates with his now-wife, Gwynn when he mentioned he was going to buy a new car. He was headed to the North Park Lincoln dealership, and little did he know her father was the general manager.

We have such a sense of community here. We all walk over to the games together, and our kids love it.

“He came in there with workout pants and sneakers and mentioned to the salesman that he’s taking a girl out on a date that night,” Gwynn said. “When he mentioned my name, the salesman said, ‘I’ll be right back.’ He came back with my Dad, who said, ‘I hear you’re taking my daughter out.’ My Dad was in a three-piece suit. We joke now about how my Dad probably felt OK about us dating because he was able to see his credit score.” Ben and Gwynn married in 2010, and the following year bought a home, had their daughter, Riley, now 9, and wound up doing a full remodel. “When we look back at that time, it was definitely stressful, but I think we really enjoyed getting to make something of our own. We learned each other’s strengths and boundaries. We ended up getting pregnant with our son, Greyson, during the remodel, so that added to the craziness as well.” The Deavers still live in the home, which is across the way from Alamo Heights High School, something they love. On Friday nights, their family, along with neighbors, tailgate before the football games and walk over together. “When we bought in this location, we were focused solely on the schools, and we assumed it would be difficult with traffic,” Gwynn said. “We had no idea how awesome it would be. We have such a sense of community here. We all walk over to the games together, and our kids love it.” Spending time together on the weekends as a family has become a priority since the pandemic began in March.

Gwynn said before the shutdown, her family was far too busy fulfilling obligations that, in the big picture of life, didn’t matter. “It’s been really eye-opening in a positive way,” she said. “There’s no need to be so busy and scheduled all the time. There was no value in what we were doing, where now we put value in everything we’re doing.” Ben is a Senior Manager of Corporate Business Intelligence at Rush Enterprises during the workweek, and Gwynn is the Vice President of Strategic Marketing at Broadway Bank. Gwynn also sits on the board at Alpha Home; a non-profit focused on addiction recovery and healing for women. “It called to me because I love their focus on keeping families together,” she said. “A lot of patients they see have families that depend on them, and their goal is to get healthy.” Both Riley and Greyson attend the Spanish immersion program at Cambridge Elementary and are involved in Cub Scouts and dance. Their hectic work weeks make the Deaver’s weekend retreats to their beach house in Port Aransas and their ranch near Batesville that much sweeter. The foursome also loves to cook together, play board games, and hang out with their rescue Labrador Retrievers, Eliza and Sam. The shutdown has opened our eyes to just how valuable our time together as a family is,” Gwynn said. “It’s really helped us recognize what’s truly important.” 78209magazine.com | JANUARY 2021 21

There’s New Way to Make Some Elbow Room

So, you’ve been cramped into your home with your people for months. Even if you’ve ventured out into the world, it’s not the same one we all knew last December. You feel a little rougher for the wear. As distanced as we have all become, there doesn’t seem to be enough room. I spy neighbors sweating it out in their garage between the second fridge and the “good car.” My sister and brother-in-law converted their guest suite into a home office/Murphy bedroom. They hang those “Shhhhh. Dad’s working” signs on the door handle when he’s on a zoom meeting. My sweet niece and nephews still manage to make guest appearances. There’s a new business in town called Some Elbow Room. They build small offices, she-sheds, man-caves, pods, studios, and suites that’ll knock your socks off. Between losing our footing in the housing industry and my insane power of persuasion, we found ourselves building the mother of all she-sheds in our backyard. Not to brag, but I get a bit of the princess treatment. When I insisted on a studio out back, my husband delivered. I’d always dreamed of having 24 JANUARY 2021 | 78209magazine.com

my own little space to do anything I wanted, to decorate as I pleased. To use how I pleased. To get away from everyone and pretend I was in my own little world. I envisioned dirt or cement floors with metal or cedar walls—something like a fort that I could shabby-chic to my heart’s content. What I got was like walking into a dream. My she-shed was more like another room in our home. It was climate-controlled and had insulated walls. There was electricity, 4” baseboards, transom windows, huge french doors, and gorgeous waterproof floors. The exterior looks like a modern home with galvanized metal siding and stained tongue and groove pine. He put in a stylish pendant light and a German schemer feature wall that I just love. I’ve decked my new space out with European style exercise equipment that makes excellent use of vertical space. It’s made with warmtoned wood and leather materials and is perfect for Pilates. The other side stores all of my art supplies with a small desk and comfortable chair facing the window. It’s heaven. Clients purpose their Elbow Rooms for everything from a laundry room to a music studio to pool houses. One of our greatest joys is hearing the different ways people plan to use their extra space. While we haven’t seen anyone put it to action yet, the idea of a dedicated backyard bar seems to be the most popular to date. We hear from customers looking for ways to socialize safely in their backyards. They envision large decks, fire pits, several groups of outdoor furniture, and a space offering that little bit of shelter for those moments of private conversation, a nap, media room, kids’ arcade, or wine and cigar rooms. Bringing the indoors to the outside is trending large on the minds of our clients. They want to be near one another and their kids, but not so near that it’s uncomfortable. Sometimes they just want to close the door and play their baby grand piano inside their soundproofed studio while their spouse peacefully gardens out front. One client included a 220v electric socket for his kiln. He sits in his studio, working on his pottery, having a drink on the deck with his wife, and enjoying the expansive view of the Bulverde landscape from their perch. Others are searching for the slightly larger spaces with airy windows and garage-style doors as places to meet up with their bubble for book clubs, poker nights, or, my personal favorite, Dungeons, and Dragons games. It’s times like now that we realize that we need not only extra room for work, thinking, and hobbies, but extra space for friends and family that flows into our new expanse of socialization. We don’t always find it in a nook or closet. It’s that willingness to build in some elbow room that leads to greater peace of mind and a sense of community. 78209magazine.com | JANUARY 2021 25

Owners of backyard chickens seeking approval from the Alamo Heights city council to raise chickens lost out when the council refused to amend the city ordinance that bans chickens and other animals. As a result, the households with chickens that code compliance is aware of will receive a new notice giving them 30 days to re-home the birds. If they are not re-

homed by the end of that timeframe, the city will discuss the matter with the homeowners but will likely implement a fine until they comply. Council debated the issue for more than an hour at its December 14 meeting. The debate centered on noise. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not clear as of this writing whether any of the backyard chicken families will seek to challenge the ordinance in court.

AH Stray Dogs Have New Shelter On December 14, the Alamo Heights City Council approved extending an agreement with Pup Pup & Away to continue sheltering and training stray dogs picked up in the City of Alamo Heights. The new agreement continues the relationship AH has had with Pup Pup since last January. In December 2019, the shelter housing strays from the area, Alamo Heights Kennel Club, closed, leaving the city with few options to board stray dogs pending adoption. That problem was solved with Stephanie Garza opened Pup Pup & Away in January 2020. Garza is the owner and trainer at the facility. Garza told me, “The arrangement with Alamo Heights provides Scout, an Alamo Heights Animal Care Services rescue is seen here at Pup Pup & Away. boarding at Pup Pup and some training to make the dogs more Garza started dog training in 2013 when he was adoptable. Olmos Park Seeks Donations to Help Pay for Expenses Associated with Rounding up Stray Dogs

The City of Olmos Park budgeted $5,000 in 2020 so that Eagle Veterinary Clinic, on McCullough, can care for the stray dogs and cats picked up by the Olmos Park Police Department from calls received by or dropped off by Olmos Park residents. These costs, according to the city, are escalating annually. To help defray some of the city’s costs and cover outof-pocket expenses paid for by Eagle Veterinary Clinic for pet adoptions, shots, and more, the City has established a STRAY ANIMAL FUND. They are asking residents to consider donating to this fund so that the City can use these dollars for other needs in the City. Residents can drop off or mail a check payable to the City of Olmos Park with the memo line indicating the donation is for the STRAY ANIMAL FUND. According to the Olmos Pak Annual Budget, around $200 was donated in 2020.

AH Kids Win Spot to Ride Bikes For kids who want to ride their bikes in Alamo Heights, there are few options other than riding in the street, which, of course, poses dangers to young bike riders. So, when the city council met on December 14, they approved the temporary use of the parking lot north of the AH Bark Park for bicycle use through February 8, 2021, with a promise to find a permanent site, AH kids and their parents who attended the council meeting were overjoyed. There’s no word yet where that permanent site will be, but the pledge to make it happen satisfied everyone.

AH City Council Tables Emergency Tornado Siren As reported in 78209 Magazine in November 2020, AH Fire Chief Michael Gdovin is seeking funding for an emergency tornado warning siren. After listening to area residents’ concerns about the noise from the siren’s weekly testing, the city council voted to table the funding until its next council meeting. Council asked the chief to investigate whether fewer tests were possible to reduce noise. Chief Gdovin agreed to do so and will report his findings back to the council.

GETTING BACK TO NORMAL AHHS Spirit Showcase Allows Groups to Perform, Give Back BY STEFAN ENSLIN, HOOF PRINT CO-EDITOR IN CHIEF EMMIE CHANEY, OLMOS CO-EDITOR | LEXI RAMIREZ, SENIOR ADS EDITOR

Students have overcome many challenges resulting from living and learning through a pandemic. One of the ways that allowed them to share in a traditional experience, was the creation of the Spirit Showcase. The event featured AHHS cheer, Spurs, twirlers, color guard, Posse and band, provided a bit of normalcy and celebration. The showcase was held on the football field at Alamo Heights High School and entrance fees, canned food items donated by attendees allowed for fundraising for the San Antonio Food Bank. Community members also donated money and, at the end of the night, $3,390 was raised for the organization. The night was also special because senior members of the groups were recognized with their parents. “It was fulfilling to receive recognition as a senior for all the hard work over the past four years,” senior Emily Bond said. “It was a memorable night.” The band formed a semi-circle around the field and played the songs they play for football games and competitions. The Spurs Dance Team was also at the showcase to perform. They performed multiple dances and routines, 30 JANUARY 2021 | 78209magazine.com

providing energy, creativity and talent to the showcase. The girls performed their annual dance with their parents to Sweet Caroline, a long-standing tradition at AHHS. Cheer performed their competition Game Day routine at the event in order to show their routine to parents and members of the community who couldn’t make it to their regional competition the following weekend. “I think our team performed really well for our first time doing the routine full out in front of a crowd,” senior Spencer Henderson said. “It was a really good practice before our competition and gave us more confidence.” The showcase was student led, meaning the captains of the dance, cheer and band teams announced the performing groups. Also, the audience was able to watch color guard and the twirlers perform and they were recognized with their parents. “It was exciting to present what we’ve been working on to our friends and family,” senior Brooke Rohweder said. “It might not have been the most conventional setting, but I’m happy to be back and performing again with the band.”

School News STRINGS STUDENTS PRACTICE FOR GOOD

Alamo Heights Junior School (AHJS) strings musicians found a unique way to support the Snack Pak 4 Kids initiative that supports their school. They launched their first-ever String-A-Thon. Students were asked to work towards a goal of practicing every day for 21-days. Orchestra Director, Kathy Murdock, inspired students with the fact that 20 practices make a habit, a great tip for all growing musicians. Students set their goals and then collected pledges for those goals. As the students progressed through the String-A-Thon, they collectively celebrated individual student accomplishments to keep the energy and momentum moving forward. The group raised just over $3,000 during the String-A-Thon, with half of the proceeds benefitting the AHJS Snack Pak 4 Kids Program and the remainder benefitting the AHJS Orchestra Program. Snack Pak 4 Kids was created to provide weekend food supplements to students who are identified by their teachers, creating food SECURITY for them over the weekend. With the support of partners, donors and volunteers of all ages, Snack Pak 4 Kids San Antonio works hard to be a learning enhancement tool for these kids, solving their weekend hunger issue so they can learn during the school week.

AHISD NAMES CAMPUS TEACHERS OF THE YEAR Alamo Heights ISD announced the Campus Teachers of the Year for each of the district’s five campuses. The teams’ practices are in the morning or after school depending on the schedule and with all of the ongoing construction, the players head to Cambridge, Woodridge or Alamo Heights Junior School for practice. “It’s upsetting not having a home stadium for my senior season because whenever you play away, not that many people come to the games,” senior Defensive Midfielder Kennedy Massey said. “When we practice, we have to drive to a different field and it just makes things more difficult for us, but I am so grateful to be able to play and have a season with my team.” Coach Chris Sharp leads the girls’ team while Coach Christopher Perez leads the boys. hard getting their teams ready for the 2020-21 season after last season’s cancellation because of COVID-19. “I’m really excited to be able to play this year since our season last year was cut short,” junior Right-Wing Parker Johnson said. “This year we lost some key components from our roster but we had some new guys come in and they blended in really well.” Both the boys and girls began their season on December 10 with the boys playing Southwest and the girls facing Johnson. The Lady Mules are very confident in their team’s ability and are sure they will come home with a win. “We have been working really hard and I think teams are going to be coming after us,” junior Outsider Defender Annette Mickler said. “This year we have mostly upperclassmen on our team. There are a few lower classmen but they fit in really nice and the senior are great leaders and role models.”

School News SMH CELEBRATES AND UPHOLDS HONORED TRADITION

Saint Mary’s Hall (SMH) celebrated one of its honored traditions in November, the annual Founders’ Day. Despite the current challenges, SMH was able to successfully and safely hold the event on campus and virtually. A number of community members attended, including seniors, with a six foot distance between seats and masks worn for safety. The rest of the student body and faculty watched the streamed event from their classrooms and homes. This unique occasion recognizes a person or family whose faith, vision, and determination have made a lasting impact on the school. Though SMH did not have an honoree this year, the school carried this tradition forward with an official installation of Head of School Len Miller and the presentation of Master Teacher Awards. During the ceremony, Mr. Miller

was presented with symbolic gifts, including a compass, lapel pin, book, and SMH spirit wear. “Thank you for this opportunity to serve you in the best way that I can,” said Mr. Miller. “I want every member of this community to feel that deep sense of belonging that elicits pride in this institution that our founders undoubtedly felt over the storied history of this great school.” Mr. Miller also presented the Master Teacher Awards to four deserving faculty members. Since 2002, teachers who have distinguished themselves through exemplary service to the SMH community and through extraordinary instruction have been awarded the title of Master Teacher. The Circle School is internationally designated as an Ashoka Changemaker School for cultivating students with the skills and confidence to change the world for the common good. Changemaker projects are always an integral part of our curriculum and our school culture, but especially this year. 2020 has given us many challenges to transform into opportunities to hone these skills. In November, our Circle School Changemakers led a food drive for the San Antonio Food Bank. Students hand delivered flyers to our neighbors to encourage participation and ultimately collected five barrels of non-perishable food items. Our small but mighty cooperative community proudly delivered six-hundred and sixty-seven pounds of food and $1,090 in monetary donations to the San Antonio Food Bank! Each dollar donated to the food bank equals ten pounds of food for San Antonio area families. For our students, this project modeled the changemaking power of love and compassion to support the needs of our community.

Airport staffers implemented the idea after learning how well it worked at the Los Angeles International Airport. Pups n' Planes has been reducing blood pressure and turning frowns upside down for six years. “In the car, she knows that we are almost at the airport. She gets so excited! Her job is to make people smile. She does that job.” And if you saw Bella, you would smile, too. The girl team also spends time at the airport USO, softening the loneliness and longing of our troops, so familiar to military life. While Bella offers kisses, Canine Explosive Detection Supervisor Sgt. Andres Lopez, and his police dog Keyno, provide safety and security. “We are there to make sure that the traveling public is safe, the dog makes that any threats associated with aviation there aren’t real threats,” says the airport K9 police officer. Lopez and Keyno “nose around," sniffing out threats that could come from a parked car, a suitcase, or a person. “Dogs are about as mobile as you can get,” says Lopez. He means the nose is mobile.

But anyone wanting a specific breed can get one, and at a much-reduced cost. Many rescue groups in Texas are breed-specific, groups that seek homes for sporting dogs, Dachshunds, Basset Hounds, and more, pets abandoned, or whose owner passed away. In her closing statement to the city council, Coyle stated, “San Antonio has the chance to be on the right side of history---taking a strong stand against the cruel puppy mill industry that exploits puppies for profit.” So the next time you look at that doggy in the window, it will be something to feel good about.

n a city overrun by fast food restaurants and corporate chain concepts, it’s always exciting to find those cozy neighborhood bistros that strive to deliver outstanding food in an intimate and unique setting. These hidden gems are often run by families and partners that are trying to bring something different to the dining landscape, and they should be appreciated, supported and cherished. Luckily the Alamo Heights area has many great, independent restaurants to choose from, but if you are craving authetic Italian cuisine prepared by a true Italian chef then you only need to head over to Braza Brava off Broadway at Sunset.

Braza Brava opened in 2014, and is one of only a few Italian restaurants in town that features a true Napolean pizza oven. It was built by the legendary oven builder Stefano Ferrara, who is known for his unsurpassed craftsmanship. The oven allows for pizzas and other dishes to be cooked at a very high temperature to ensure that the flavors will be locked in tight without burning the food. In fact, everything about Braza Brava reflects the idea that craftsmanship should be celebrated. From their creative craft cocktail menu, to their rustic, hand-crafted tables and bar top, which were built by the owners themselves, out of repurposed long-leaf pine, the atmosphere at Braza Brava is rustic and relaxed, but it is also refined. At the helm of this beautifully crafted pizza oven is Chef Mauro D’Alonzo, who comes to the Alamo City from the Abruzzo region of Italy. Chef Mauro, along with owners Isela and Eduardo Valdes works tirelessly to bring a true and authentic Italian dining experience to San Antonio, and their hard work is evident throughout the menu. Pizza rules the menu at Braza Brava, and one of their seasonal favorites is the Pizza Carnivale. This beautiful creation features fresh house-made Italian sausage and mozzarella, along with San Marzano tomato sauce and fresh basil. The secret to this pizza, however, is discovered when you bite into the perfectly baked crust to enjoy the sweet texture of ricotta cheese. The restaurant features a wonderful menu full of delicious pasta dishes, fresh salads and charcuterie boards, crispy paninis, as well as steak and seafood, but the highlight of the menu has to be their signature Cacio e Pepe Pasta

presentation. Chef Mauro takes the concept of Fettucine Alfredo and fires it up a notch as he sautés fresh pasta in a white wine cream sauce and tosses it over a giant wheel of flaming parmigiana cheese. The wheel is aged for 24 months and all of the pungent flavors of the parmesan meld together deliciously to create a creamy dish that is as beautiful as it is delicious. They offer a long list of ingredients that can be added to your pasta as well, including fresh vegetables, meatballs , shrimp and even ribeye steak. The presentation is fascinating to watch and the aroma that wafts throughout the restaurant will leave your mouth watering. Braza Brava is open for lunch and dinner, for dine-in and take-out, and offers lunch specials daily, as well as Happy Hour on Monday through Friday from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. with discounted appetizers and wine and beer. For those who prefer to stay home during this pandemic, you’ll want to take advantage of their special “3 Meals To Go for $29” deal. You can call the restaurant for details. Furthermore, you won’t want to miss their “1/2 price Wine Nights” on Mondays and Tuesdays, where every bottle on their impressive wine list is half off, including their high-end cellar selections. This offer definitely gives Taco Tuesday a run for its money, and a reason to celebrate the beginning of a new week. There is so much to love about Braza Brava. From their outstanding Italian cuisine to the warm hospitality of the owners and their friendly staff, you’ll be hard pressed to ever venture anywhere else when the craving for true Italian hits your belly.
