Editor’s Letter
July Just when it seems that life is going to go back to some semblance of normal, we receive alerts on our phones telling us to stay home as a result of Coronavirus numbers increasing. This was not the fourth of July most of us had planned. The struggle is becoming real for more and more people in our community, but for many families, there still is a silver lining, as they continue to spend more quality time together than ever before, playing games, taking walks and bike rides together. You can generally find at least one bicycle in most family garages, but with COVID-19, they have become increasingly more popular. In our July Business Profile, we feature Bike World in Alamo Heights. Forty-nine years ago, Whit Snell opened a tiny bike shop and has supplied generations of ‘09ers with bicycles ever since. The neighbor that I want you to meet this month is Kim Ford, owner of theKFORDGroup, a local accounting firm. Kim moved to 78209 in the early nineties in search of a place where she could raise her 5-year-old daughter that had the same feel of the west Texas town where she grew up. She found just that in Northwood Estates. It seems that a day doesn’t go by that we aren’t asked to contribute to one charity or another. There are so many amazing charities that have tremendous needs. Some needs are obvious, but others, not so much. This month’s “Ask Roxie,” is an exceptional story that tells about a need that most of us have never even thought about. It tugs at your heartstrings. I hope all of you will take time to read it. With so much uncertainty in our world right now, it’s important to take advantage of the extra time we have and cling to what is good. Spending time with family and teaching kids to play like we did “in the good old days” is time well spent. Hopefully, this virus will all be over soon, or at least under control. Please help others and help yourself by wearing a mask and social distancing when you are in public places. Remember to look for the silver lining in each and every day and you’ll find one. Stay safe and well,

Happenings In ‘09 Work Underway on New H.E. Butt Family Foundation Facility on West Sunset BY RON AARON EISENBERG
As we wrote in Happenings in August 2017, “Long-time 78209 residents may recall Fred Pottinger’s antique store, Horse of a Different Color, at 146 West Sunset. Several structures sit on the slightly more than 1.5-acre property, which includes three lots. It was recently purchased by the H.E. Butt Family Foundation, from the current owner, Emily Dial, for an estimated $1.4 million. Work is now underway to build a 10,000-squarefoot structure on the property. It will house some 8-10 Foundation executives and staff, according to Patton Dodd, Executive Director, Storytelling & Communications, H. E. Butt Foundation. In an email to me, Dodd explained, “We’ve just begun the process of renovating that site and preparing to build
new offices for the Foundation. We plan to salvage as much as we can from the buildings that were there, and especially from the landscaping – we are retaining as many trees and plants as possible and incorporating them into site plans.” “Our new offices should be built by the end of next year or early 2021. The H. E. Butt Foundation’s headquarters remain in Kerrville, Texas, but we are growing community initiatives focused partly on San Antonio, and working with several nonprofit partners in the area. We look forward to growing our presence here as we continue to serve families and children in need.” The Foundation estimates the cost of the new project at $8.5 million. The work is expected to take 12 – 14 months.
OPNNA and Residents Adjacent to 1841 Flamingo Battle Over Zoning Developer Peter Greenblum plans on building 20-single family garden homes on the nearly 1.5 acres at 1841 Flamingo, just off Broadway. He’s asking the city to rezone the property to IDZ-1, a new category of IDZ, to permit construction of the single-family homes. As currently zoned, Greenwald told 78209 Magazine, the zoning may allow up to fortytwo apartments. And if he’s denied the zoning change, that’s something he could consider. Residents living adjacent to the property have been working with Greenblum for the past two years to develop a plan that satisfies the developer and the neighbors. Until now the Oak Park Northwood Neighborhood Association has steered clear of the negotiations on the property. The issue for OPNNA board members is the IDZ zoning designation. They don’t like it. They don’t want it. Stay tuned for the outcome, which should be decided in August 2020. 14 JULY 2020 | 78209magazine.com

Cassie and her husband, Hunter, have opened the perfect children’s boutique, at 5934 Broadway, in the same center as Bird Bakery, across the street from Bike World. I don’t say it’s the perfect children’s boutique lightly. It is. Talking with Cassie, as I did the other day, gave me the sense that she hand-picked every item on display in their new boutique. From the 100% organic cotton newborn onesies, to the cute as can be shorts and t-shirts for threeyear-old’s. Intermixed throughout the store with the exceptional clothing are old-world wooden toys, tambourines, and such. I learned a long time ago that the smartest people in your business are your employees, and if you give them free rein to do what’s best for the company, they will.
“A week doesn’t go by where a customer doesn’t come in and buy bikes for their kids or grandkids, telling me how their parents bought their first bikes from us,” Snell said. “You’ll have someone who played on our little league team back in 1972 stop by. They grew up with us. We’ve sold bikes to multi-generations. It is great to see the same family names come in who were our initial supporters back in 1971.” A current resident of Mahncke Park, Snell originally moved to the Alamo Heights area after graduating from the University of Texas Austin in the early seventies. While he was a film major, his love of cycling gave him the drive to start Bike World. What began as a tiny storefront selling bikes grew into a massive shop, including bike sales, gear, a repair shop, and social ride meet-ups for local clubs. Throughout the years, Snell has also opened several other locations on 281, Southwest Military Highway, and at the Historic Pearl, where he has a booming rental business. “A lot of people who come to rent at the Pearl are out of towners who are cyclists and want to get some exercise,” Snell said. “We have such a great trail system here in San Antonio, and it’s a beautiful way to see the missions or downtown.” Keeping four bike shops up and running for nearly 50 years amidst big box stores and online companies popping up is no small accomplishment. Snell strongly believes the secret to a successful business is its staff. Everyone who comes to
work for Bike World goes through extensive training on the bikes in person and through an online program called Trek University. His management is given purchasing and hiring authority, and since March, more than $75,000 has been given out in bonuses to Bike World employees. “I learned a long time ago that the smartest people in your business are your employees, and if you give them free rein to do what’s best for the company, they will,” Snell said. “I obviously can’t run a business this size by myself. I depend on our staff, and they are extraordinary. They are really smart, hard-working people. We allow them to run the company.” The Coronavirus pandemic and shutdown of the country have made bicycles in extremely high demand. Bike World prepared ahead of time, ordering all their inventory for the entire year in January. The store also changed its repair shop’s guidelines to assist those who purchase from Bike World in a timely manner. “We are only servicing bikes that have been purchased with us or are brands we carry,” Snell said. “There is so much service work to be done coming off the shutdown, and people were having to wait ten days for work, and that’s not right. When you have a kid who is out riding their bike every single day, they don’t have ten days to wait for a repair. So that’s one of our big changes this year. We really want to make sure we serve our customers well.” 78209magazine.com | JULY 2020 17

hen Kim Ford moved to the Northwood neighborhood in 1993 with her then 5-year-old daughter, she wanted a place to replicate the type of childhood she experienced growing up in a small town in West Texas.
“In this neighborhood, the kids who go to elementary together stay together throughout middle and high school as well,” she said. “It was really important to me that my daughter, Heather, grow up with the same kids throughout school.” The childhood experience Ford gave her daughter in moving to ‘09 made such an impact, Heather and her husband, Luke Caussade, moved back to the neighborhood, built a house in the backyard for Kim’s mother, Jean Chesney, and are expecting their first child soon. “It’s such a great place to raise kids, that you see a lot of those who grew up here coming back to start their own families,” Ford said. “Heather is literally five blocks away now. It really is such a multigenerational community.” Throughout the week, Ford is a busy woman, running her accounting firm, the KFORDgroup. When she is not at the office, she loves to work in her garden, which she calls her “recharge zone.” Working on the flowers and herbs, including currently blooming hibiscus, gives Ford a chance to shut off the world and think. “It’s a time to collect my thoughts and really gain perspective on what’s really important, and it allows me to think about my clients and their needs,” she said. “I like things pretty. We have birdbaths and feeders and beautiful flowers. My yard is my refuge.” Having raised Heather as a single mom, Ford and her daughter share a special bond and love traveling to the Central Coast of California together. When in Carmel, California, the Fords find hidden beaches lined with calla lilies, visit the local wineries and take drives along the coast. They also recently visited Cape Cod and did a spur of the moment trip down to South Padre Island. “I never have to worry when I’m with Heather because she always makes things fun,” Kim said. Now that Heather has moved to the neighborhood, and her
In this neighborhood, the kids who go to elementary together stay together throughout middle and high school as well, first grandchild is on the way, Kim is thrilled to think about the future, knowing her daughter is in the same supportive community she’s called home for so many years. “There are such great families here,” Kim said. “When I was raising my daughter, we all sort of co-parented everyone’s children. I was probably one of the few working moms and probably the only single mom, so I made sure to take all the early morning carpools, and in doing that, I knew Heather would then make it to dance class or Brownies thanks to the other carpools. It all worked out because we all worked together as a community. It really does take a village to raise a child.” Since the Coronavirus pandemic and shut down, Ford has been extra cautious with restrictions since her daughter is expecting, and her mother is in her eighties. While it has been a difficult time, Ford has appreciated the extra time to reflect and enjoy her beautiful garden. “The people I have seen during the pandemic are those that truly matter to me, like my family and those who work in my office,” Kim said. 78209magazine.com | JULY 2020 19

new normal is emerging in the Alamo Heights area. Neither Alamo Heights nor Terrell Hills yet has a sense of the fiscal consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the slowdown that the outbreak has caused. But San Antonio is trying to protect more vulnerable residents and businesses while looking to see what its financial future holds. 24 JULY 2020 | 78209magazine.com
Meanwhile, the nationwide protest movement sparked by a new battle against racism and police brutality has made its presence known in area communities. In a few ways, Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills have been tackling what some people might call typical city business during re-openings from the pandemic. Alamo Heights is working with the Friends of Hondondo Creek Trails to better protect the Jack Judson nature trails. Some parts of the trails were damaged when restless children or teenagers improvised bicycle jumps in the area, according to city officials. The “Friends group, made up of area residential volunteers, has a formal agreement with Alamo Heights to maintain the natural trails. The city first erected temporary signs to discourage the young cyclists from using the Judson trails, but those signs

TAKE…ACTION I often wonder how others spend their days in quarantine. I mean, you can only binge watch so much. At some point, there’s really nothing left to watch. Do I dare turn on movies like “Outbreak” or “Contagion?” Nah, that’s a little too close to home. But, it got me thinking. They’re just movies. When filming, they can get it wrong and do it over. They get another take.
Consider starting with these:
And then it hit me…this is OUR “do-over.” It’s another “take.” It’s our chance to re-evealuate what’s really important and take action.
4. Ask yourself how much are you able to save? Start small, but get started.
When I’m counseling clients about their personal financial planning, I always remind the that their #1 asset is their ability to earn an income. I ask, “What are you doing now to protect that asset? What would you do if…You had an emergency? You got sick and couldn’t work? You lost your job? What if you had to change how you lived because of things beyond your control…like a pandemic? But that won’t happen to me – will it? Well, IT just did! It happened to all of us. And now, it’s about making adjustments; controlling what we can and making positive changes. It’s about not being afraid and taking one day at a time. This is the 3rd recession in my career, and I know from experience, this is also an opportunity. A chance to learn about yourself, your financial situation, and to take action.
1. Seek help from a professional financial advisor 2. Start an emergency fund with 3-6 months of living expenses. 3. Review your spending habits. They’ve changed. What do you really need?
5. Plan goals that are 1, 3, and 5 years away. Break them into bite-size pieces and begin working toward them. 6. Write down your goals. Review them regularly. Make adjustments. 7. Make it a family goal, so everyone can help. 8. Take advantage of any tax programs available this year. These days I ask my clients, how did you feel in 2008? What did you learn? It took 5 years to recover, but we gained experience. We don’t know when, but history tells us it will happen again. So, ask yourself, with the current situation, if you had to do it over, what would you do differently? Will you be better prepared next time? Will you seek out a professional for the advice you need to move forward? I would suggest you should. But don’t wait! NOW is your chance - DO it differently now! Stop binge watching! were removed or stolen, according to the city. More recently, the city and the Friends organization discussed other ways to potentially discourage the cyclists from the trails, including building a small bike park elsewhere. “You might consider finding a more appropriate area to develop into a bike park, which would preserve the Judson nature trails for its intended purpose,” Mariann Golden, past San Antonio Audubon Society president, wrote to the city. “A dedicated bike park would also be safer for the kids who use it.” Alamo Heights City Council recently welcomed a new member, Blake Bonner, an executive with REOC San Antonio. He succeeds Fred Prassel, who retired. Terrell Hills recently bade farewell to Greg Whitlock, who served as police chief before becoming city manager in 2016. He retired at the end of April following 48 years of public service. “(Whitlock) was a catalyst for change in our police department as he expected and demanded a higher level of professionalism,” Mayor Anne Ballantyne said. “Because of Greg, we were recognized as a Texas Best Practices Police Department in 2013. This is a big accomplishment where police agencies in Texas voluntarily go through a process to prove their compliance with best practices of 166 Texas law enforcement. We have been re-certified twice since 2013.” Terrell Hills promoted Bill Foley from police chief to city manager. He had worked with the police department since March 2004. Roger Mangum was promoted from patrol commander/lieutenant to police chief. He has served with the local police force since 2008. “We are fortunate that we had two great leaders in house that were willing to step up and serve the city in new capacities,” Ballantyne said of Magnum and Foley. Additionally, Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills announced there would be no official Fourth of July weekend celebrations.
But area businesses and cultural/recreational institutions, including the Witte Museum, San Antonio Botanical Garden, The Doseum, San Antonio Zoo, and the relocated Kiddie Park, reopened with limited capacity and safety measures. The city of San Antonio is trying to help residents and businesses especially affected by the pandemic, approving a $191 million package with small business financial aid, and assistance for those needing housing security and workforce retraining, and students needing improved Internet access. District 10 City Councilman Clayton Perry cast the lone dissenting vote, saying San Antonio was not allocating enough money for local small businesses. Restaurants such as Mo’s Irish Pub and Canyon Cafe closed permanently. San Antonio, also faces a nearly $200 million hit on revenues, mainly in tourism and visitor/conventionrelated business. City officials said significant cuts and continued furloughs might be proposed for the fiscal year 2021 budget. If this was not enough, unrest arose across the country, sparked by the death of Minnesota resident and Houston native George Floyd, an unarmed African-American man, at the hands of Minneapolis police. Protests erupted in many cities, including San Antonio, as hundreds railed against systemic racism and police brutality. Smaller protests, peaceful in nature, arrived in Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills in early June. One day, dozens of residents and non-residents marched from the Lincoln Heights retail center to the Alamo Heights city hall complex and back. Another day, several people, including former Texas House Speaker Joe Straus, gathered in Terrell Hills for a similar protest.

GRADUATING CLASS OF 2020 For the Class of 2020, taking those final steps as an Alamo Heights High School Mule, meant so much more than simply crossing a stage to receive a diploma. It was a time to reunite with classmates and to celebrate the chance to be together again. The Class of 2020 faced many challenges during the last few months of their Senior year. Still, they embraced it all, marking the transition from high school senior to Alamo Heights graduate, in two unique graduation celebrations. With the original event and traditional ceremony canceled due to the pandemic, the students discovered new and unique ways to celebrate their achievements. From Senior Shoutouts to Lighting Up the Night under the Stadium Lights, the Class of 2020 will forever be remembered as the class celebrated with parades of decorated cars and trucks, social media features, and unique graduation celebrations. Graduation day looked a little different this year, but it was embraced in unique ways, with proud parents and family members sharing in the moment. A presentation of diplomas was held in front of Alamo Heights High School on June 2 at 11 am, with students arriving in cap and gown at the Mule statue to receive their diploma, while being cheered on by family and friends. Later that night, a graduation ceremony was held at the Real-Life Amphitheater, formerly the Verizon Amphitheater. Graduates and their families enjoyed a more traditional celebration while maintaining required social distancing protocols. The event provided an opportunity for the students to be reunited once again, to reflect on their time as Mules, and to look forward to what lies ahead, strengthened by their most recent challenges. The high school staff honored two students with Outstanding Senior Girl and Boy, awards selected annually to recognize two students who exemplify great character, academic excellence, and a heart for service. The 2020 Outstanding Senior Girl was Lucy Gibbs, and the Outstanding Senior Boy was Milo Langmore. Congrats, Class of 2020! 28 JULY 2020 | 78209magazine.com

School News JOERIS LEADS SENIORS IN RAISING THE ROOF Joeris General Contractors has been working alongside the Class of 2020 at Alamo Heights High School throughout the year, as they continue to construct the new buildings, gym, home side of the stadium and press box, as well as innovative classroom spaces, that will greatly enhance the campus. To mark the senior year of the Class of 2020 in a unique way, Joeris provided Seniors with the opportunity to sign one of the support beams that would be lifted into the new gymnasium ceiling. Students penned special messages, signed their names, and marked their time at AHHS, writing on the metal beam, a beam that will now be lifted high overhead to support a building, set to serve future Mules for generations.
MULES UP AHISD’s Transportation Department wanted to mark the close of a very unique academic year with something special and inspirational. How do you share your message of hope for your students, while being true to your school? You put your message in writing for all to see, and you write it using a few school buses. The AHmazing design and message, Mules Up! was crafted by carefully maneuvering and parking 22 buses, and one Mighty Mule Band Truck and Trailer, into a motivational message. Bus drivers crafted the message to celebrate the Class of 2020 and to share their love for all their students and the district as a whole. #MulesUpforTransportation
A CAR-4-ALL-SEASONS
Principle Auto Group Partners, Abigail Kampmann, and Mark Smith, along with their team members, surprised Alamo Heights ISD Teacher of the Year, Lisa Barry, with her first set of keys to a “Car-4-All-Seasons.” Barry was honored and excited to be the recipient of the four vehicles. This tradition was created by Principle Auto just five years ago to honor the district Teacher of the Year annually. Barry will drive a new Principle vehicle every three months, culminating a year with four different Cars-4-All-Seasons! Barry was named the Alamo Heights ISD District Teacher of the Year earlier this Spring. She has been honored as a finalist for the Trinity Prize and a finalist for the Humanities Texas Outstanding Teacher Award. Barry, a veteran teacher at Woodridge Elementary, is best known for her teaching of tolerance through the lessons of the Holocaust. Barry was one of the four women and the only teacher that convinced Texas lawmakers to create Holocaust Remembrance Week, which launched in January 2020. 30 JULY 2020 | 78209magazine.com

We just have a conversation!” Bella and Bonnie are a volunteer team with Pups n' Planes, where “comfort” dogs and their owners offer distressed travelers a little sugar. “People are waiting, their flight has been canceled, or they may have a four-hour wait, and they are upset.” “One time, two little girls stopped to pet the dog, and I looked up, and the mother was crying. Her husband was being deployed. I spent probably a half-hour with them, and the dad thanked me so many times because it got them thinking about other things,” Bonnie says. Airport staffers implemented the idea after learning how well it worked at the Los Angeles International Airport. Pups n' Planes has been reducing blood pressure and turning frowns upside down for six years. “In the car, she knows that we are almost at the airport. She gets so excited! Her job is to make people smile. She does that job.” And if you saw Bella, you would smile, too. The girl team also spends time at the airport USO, softening the loneliness and longing of our troops, so familiar to military life. While Bella offers kisses, Canine Explosive Detection Supervisor Sgt. Andres Lopez, and his police dog Keyno, provide safety and security. “We are there to make sure that the traveling public is safe, the dog makes that any threats associated with aviation there aren’t real threats,” says the airport K9 police officer. Lopez and Keyno “nose around," sniffing out threats that could come from a parked car, a suitcase, or a person. “Dogs are about as mobile as you can get,” says Lopez. He means the nose is mobile.

LOCAL PUPS GET A “NEW LEASH ON LIFE” Saving them from domestic violence

Airport therapy dogs help soothe people who may be upset because of a long wait, delayed or cancelled flight.
Do you know why half of domestic violence victims sit around and take it? Because of The Dog. Pet food maker Purina reports that 48% of these women risk their well-being, and that of their children, because they refuse to abandon Fido. “Many times, they do not come, they do not leave, because they know what will happen. Many, many do not come, because of that,” says Marta Prada Peláez of Family Violence Prevention Services, Inc., president of The Battered Women and Children’s Shelter of San Antonio. “It is that puppy, who’s been a companion to the children.” Peláez explains that while the mother copes with an abusive spouse, it lands on the pet, to provide emotional nourishment to the children. “So that companion has a very important role in families of domestic violence,” she says. And I thought we pups were the loyal ones. That’s why last year, Purina and RedRover partnered with women’s shelters across the country in the company’s Purple Leash Project to raise money to build shelters for the pets in abusive situations. That way, when the bags are packed, and everyone is ready to sneak out, they can leash the dog and bring him too. Purina states: “Our goal through the Purple Leash Project is to increase the number of pet-friendly domestic violence shelters so they’re more accessible. Purina has committed more than $500,000 through 2022 to RedRover to establish Purple Leash Project grants. These grants will be awarded on a bi-annual basis to provide funding and resources to transform domestic violence shelters into safe spaces for survivors and pets.” And this is no PR stunt. They gave Family Violence Prevention Services, Inc., $20,000, for their New Leash on Life program, which allowed them to build a 2,000 square foot indoor pet haven and play yard. “We have a basic shelter that is brand new and ready to receive puppies and cats right now,” says Peláez. “And, we envision the family coming to visit for a few hours with the pet, in a family-like environment, where mom is starting dinner, the children are doing their homework at the kitchen table,” creating a semblance of family life of the one left behind. Pets even get vaccinations, and veterinarian wellness checks. Brother can you spare a dime, because the Battered Women’s and Children’s Shelter could use some extra dog beds, cat food, pet collars, and, of course, leashes, as COVID-19 has put a dent in charitable donations. Partner RedRover is a charity that rescues pets in crisis. “RedRover helps animals rescued from disasters or neglect, domestic violence victims seeking safety with their pets, and animals with life-threatening illnesses. We use innovative solutions to prevent cruelty.” But so far, only 10% of women’s shelters are equipped for animals, so too many are left cowering, sometimes alone, in front of an abuser. “That is unfortunately a common occurrence,” says Peláez. “The abuser will also inflict fear and harm on the pet. To inflict fear, and to threaten the family, the children, if they do not allow themselves to be controlled, by the perpetrator.” “The need doesn’t leave us. Amid COVID, the shelter has been open, and providing the life-saving services, that the victims need.” Until next month! Woof, woof! Roxie

When The Unimaginable Happens: Dr. Dana Bashara Shows What Happens When Leaders Lead
I
BY: RON EISENBERG
t turns out, Alamo Heights Independent School District superintendent Dr. Dana Bashara has a knack for managing the unmanageable. And that turns out to be an enormously valuable skill, as Texas, the nation, and the world deal with the onslaught of COVID-19.
Odds are it wasn’t something the AHISD Board of Trustees were looking for when they tapped Bashara for the superintendent’s job in 2018 after Dr. Kevin Brown left to become executive director of the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA). Bashara, like Brown, was focused on leadership, learning, and student-centered teaching. Going from classrooms to distance learning wasn’t in her playbook then. But it is now. As COVID-19 began to hammer San Antonio, including Alamo Heights, school administrators and others began turning their attention to the virus. On March 4, 2020, Bashara and other educators were in a meeting at ESC20, one of 20 regional education service agencies within Texas. The agency assists school districts in improving student performance and increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of school operations. “We were all well aware of the health risks and dangers posed by COVID-19. But I don’t think any of us thought we would have to close all of our schools, administrative and athletic facilities. Shut it all down,” Bashara told me. “But as I listened to the Metro Health representative talk through the possibility of business, government, and school closures, social distancing, sanitation efforts in our schools, and 38 JULY 2020 | 78209magazine.com
more, the possibility of closing down our campuses came into focus….it was surreal.” Brick and mortar replaced by virtual educational outreach. That was Wednesday, March 4, following the Metro Health COVID-19 presentation at Region 20. It was just four days before Spring Break. Bashara continued, “We had some contact with International Schools in Japan that were closed. We talked with them to get their perspective. That led to an incredible collaborative effort for learning. ‘We announced that we would be extending spring break for another week – all of the area superintendents wondered how we would ever get back to our classrooms. It was apparent we needed remote learning to be able to last through the end of the school year.” Bashara and her team needed to turn the way teachers were teaching, and students were learning on a dime. With shuttered classrooms, distance learning was the critical element. But she wanted more than virtual classrooms. She wanted to maintain the connectedness that so defined AHISD teachers and students – their shared learning experience. Bashara gathered the entire AHISD staff on March 16, the Monday when school would have come back from Spring
Break. Teachers and assistants quickly embraced the new paradigm that was to become their new normal. Those who were comfortable with distance learning – and teaching – promptly adopted colleagues who needed help. Their charge – to be ready to teach remotely the day school began again. And they were. Bashara is quick to pass on the credit to her team for the district’s success in adapting seamlessly to the new reality. Dr. Kevin Brown hailed the leadership and innovation of Texas educators. Writing in his TASA Blog on May 13, Brown said, “In my 30-year career, I have never been prouder of public school educators as I am right now. “Schools across our state and nation have completely redesigned learning systems from in-person to at-home, overcome tremendous challenges to feed millions of children who aren’t in school, and deal with all communication, wellness, facility, Special Ed, and technology issues in impressive fashion. Our school leaders have led with grace and empathy first and foremost, but their incredible competence, professionalism, and management skills cannot be overlooked. In the most challenging times, you have risen to the occasion. And Brown noted, “Public schools across the state have done an unbelievable job during the pandemic, changing their teaching model and learning on a dime. Alamo Heights ISD definitely stands out as a national model for how to handle this crisis effectively. “I am immensely proud of Dr. Bashara and the entire team. They deeply care about the students and community, and their innovation and sense of commitment are evident in everything they do. Although all of us will be faced with many challenges until there is a treatment or cure, the AH community is so fortunate to have such stellar leadership at this critical time.” Bashara and her team rolled out a series of initiatives to assure teachers and families would be ready for the new world of continuous learning. First, phone calls were made to 4,300 students and their families. Teachers asked how they were doing and what, if anything, they needed, such as internet access and Wi-Fi, and personal devices like iPads and iPhones. They also asked if families needed food. “Wednesday of that week, we rolled out our plan for continuous learning – met with teachers Wednesday and Thursday. Friday featured a soft roll out with teachers. We designed the plan so there would be a morning meeting with students and smaller one on one sessions with teachers in the afternoons. We felt trying to hold kids accountable to that schedule would keep kids learning and teachers teaching. Bashara is reluctant to take credit for the enormous work done to reposition the district to undertake continuous learning. She says, “I lean on my team – I have remarkable talent around me. We meet daily -- this is all about collaboration, and our response was always about the kids and the kid’s needs. We saw an incredible amount of cooperation among teachers and students. She told me, “There is no time to be fearful or reluctant. I am most proud of my staff ---- I never doubted they would adapt. We all know and feel confident that what we rolled out kept our kids learning, but we know reopening our classrooms and buildings is what we need to do. I am confident that will happen.

410 Diner Offers a True Traditional Family Menu BY MEREDITH KAY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AL RENDON 46 JULY 2020 | 78209magazine.com
N
eighborhood bistros are hard to find in today’s fast-paced, large chain restaurant landscape. Still, thankfully a few have survived, and many brave souls are trying to keep the concept alive. 410 Diner is one of those iconic institutions, and they have been serving the freshest comfort food to patrons for 38 years. Dean Badri and his amazingly loyal staff have the highest standards when it comes to their restaurant, and regulars continue to dine there for lunch and dinner every single week. 410 Diner is a bit unassuming on the outside, as it is currently undergoing renovations from the last hailstorm that caused severe damage. However, the interior has been recently remodeled with new flooring and fresh paint. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time at 410 Diner, and a sense of nostalgia for a simpler time will welcome you, along with the delicious aromas of home-cooked meals. Absolutely everything is made fresh in-house at the diner, and there is a palpable sense of pride in the staff for the way things are done. There are a few cooks who have been with the diner since the 1980s, and one of the servers has been serving local patrons for over 18 years. The handwritten sign at the entrance to the diner announces the daily specials, and the menu has remained consistent for decades. The food is not complicated, but the ingredients are incredibly fresh, and dishes are made to order. Even the Fried Shrimp platter is not breaded until it is ordered. Each entrée comes with your choice of two side dishes, and there are over 20 to choose from on any given day. Nothing comes from a can, not even the beans, and we highly recommend the butter beans and the house stewed baked beans. They are outstanding, but so are the sweet potatoes, fried pickles, mac n’ cheese. And their Sonoran casserole is out of this world. One of their most popular dishes that caught our attention was Dean’s Special Fresh Catch, with your choice of fresh trout, snapper, or catfish. The fish filet is lightly
dusted in flour, pan-fried, and served with a delicious sauce of capers, hearts of palm, mushrooms, tomatoes, dill, and lemon. Another customer favorite is Chicken California, consisting of two plump, grilled chicken breasts bathed in a delicate sauce of sautéed garlic, butter, onion, and white wine. It is topped with fresh avocado and tomato. It is light and healthy and full of flavor. You’ll find gigantic salads, homemade soups, fresh bread, and homemade cornbread, along with some of the best queso in town on the menu at 410 Diner. There is truly something for everyone in your group, and you’ll want to take home the leftovers, as the portions are very generous. The restaurant prides itself on cleanliness as well, and in our current pandemic situation, this is very important. The staff is incredibly friendly, and you’ll most likely be greeted by Dean, the owner, himself. This restaurant is definitely an ‘09 gem that has stood the test of time and continues to feed the community with high standards for quality and authenticity. If you haven’t been in a while, it’s time to rediscover 410 Diner, and if for some reason you’ve never eaten here, you might just make this your new favorite spot.
