The Shy One

We are all shy at times and need comfort. Hi, my name is Ava. I am fourteen years old, and African American and Puerto Rican. I was born in Syria. I grew up in a Christian home which taught me Christian beliefs. I have two sisters and a brother on the way. I am from Syria and I fled to the U.S. because of all the violence, discrimination, and persecution of civilians. In Syria, we didn’t live in refugee camps. We lived outside with limited service. After I fled, life was great. I fled to the United States of America. When I fled, we fled in groups. I was lucky enough to be put in a group with my family. We settled in South Carolina. In South Carolina, the environment was so much better. Even though global warming was occuring, they were more adamant about having clean environments. I was able to get a better form of education. Me and my family members were also able to apply for jobs and receive benefits, and people were nice and helpful. This happened when I was ten, and now I am fourteen. I am going to high school and need more social skills. You may ask where my dad is. He has served seven years in Iraq in the army. I just got a letter from today saying he will be home soon and I am so excited. December 31, 2007. It is almost New Year’s, and my dad is coming.
