paratory Academy), Andrea Nix (seventh grade science teacher at Canyon Springs STEM Academy) and Vanessa Montgomery (honors biology teacher at Boulder Creek High School). “I am so honored,” says Vanessa, who has been teaching for 33 years. “I love what I do and I teach anatomy and biology for my customers; my students. My former students send me anatomy links to YouTube, thank you’s, and words that make me cry, almost once a week…This award plus my student feedback is all that I need.” Ryan adds that he is so excited to see that the program went off without a hitch. “Everyone who has been involved in this process loves the program,” he says. “I think everyone can agree that teachers are often under appreciated, especially in this state. When it came to the cash prizes we wanted to make sure that they knew they could spend them how they wanted; teachers often spend their own money in addition to countless unpaid hours in the classroom.” All three award winners say that the awards came as surprises—ones that reaffirm their love for their chosen profession. “I became a teacher because I had a high school teacher that made science fun,” says
Andrea Nix, who has been teaching 12 years. “I wanted to become a teacher that made a difference in my students’ lives. My goal is for my students to know that I care about them, know that they can accomplish anything they put their mind to, and know that they can always show kindness in any situation.” “Although being a teacher has its own special rewards, I very much appreciate the Anthem Rotary Club taking the special effort to recognize the Anthem teachers,” adds Tina Reese, who has wanted to be a teacher since childhood and has been in the field several years. “I am touched by the submissions made by students, administration, and parents on my behalf and am truly blessed to be a part of the Anthem Prep/Archway community.” In addition to recognizing local educators, the Rotary Club of Anthem—which is one chapter of the international network of Rotary Clubs—works on a variety of causes that impact both the local region and the world. Ryan says the club has done everything from fund water projects to working with local homeless youth. The volunteer organization is comprised of about 60 active community members.

“The Rotary Club of Anthem started as a way for local business leaders in the community to raise funds that infuse directly back into the community and even benefit causes globally,” he notes. Flag Etiquette
Local Judge Gerald A. Williams talks about respect and care for the symbol of our nation.
JUDGE GERALD A. WILLIAMS The justice of the peace for the North Valley Justice Court. The court’s jurisdiction includes Anthem and Desert Hills.
“Consider yo u rs e l f the f lag. Consider yo u r r i g h t shoulder to be the blue f i e l d . Fa c e people with yo u rs e l f t o t h e r i g h t .” WHAT IS SPECIAL about the month of June? Are there any good holidays? Well, June 2 is National Doughnut Day, which certainly sounds like a good idea. Pentecost, Father’s Day, and of course, Juneteenth also occur in June. D-Day occurred on June 6, 1944; but there is one other often-overlooked day. Flag Day is June 14. American flag etiquette is important to me, perhaps because I’m an Eagle Scout and a member of the American Legion; but for other reasons as well. It’s just basic common courtesy. What you learned in elementary school about not allowing our nation’s flag to touch the ground (or the floor or water under it) still rings true. When such mis-
16 || 85086MAGAZINE.com || JUNE 2017
handling occurs, it’s a sign of disrespect, as is using the flag as a form of drapery, for advertising, or as an item of clothing. If you’re confused about which way to display the flag, that’s okay. It can get a little complicated given the various options for a flag to be vertical, horizontal, and/or next to a speaker. The 1979 Boy Scout Handbook suggests this simple rule. “Consider yourself the flag. Consider your right shoulder to be the blue field. Face people with yourself to the right.” If a flag gets dirty, then clean it. If one gets torn, then mend it. If one becomes damaged beyond repair, then drop it off at an American Legion Post so that it will be destroyed in a dignified manner.
— 1 9 7 9 B OY S C O U T HANDBOOK Although it’s seldom enforced, there’s actually a set of federal laws known as the U.S. Flag Code. One section notes, “No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.” 4 U.S.C. § 8(j).
So why is flag etiquette important? It’s a symbol of freedom and justice and has been for over 240 years. Both in times of war and in times of peace, its very presence has provided notice to our adversaries and assurance to our allies that representatives from our country are present and that our republic lives. Some symbols matter more than others; our flag is a symbol that matters more than most.
Is It Okay to Burn the Flag in Protest? In a famous case, as part of a protest against Ronald Reagan’s administration, the defendant burned the American flag while others chanted, “America, the red, white, and blue. We spit on you. You stand for plunder, you will go under.” The protest occurred in Dallas while the city was hosting the Republican National Convention. By a vote of five to four, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the protestor’s conviction and held that burning an American flag during a protest rally was expressive conduct that is protected by the First Amendment. Justice Antonin Scalia was the fifth vote. The two justices from Arizona, William Rehnquist and Sandra Day O’Conner, dissented. They noted that the protestor was free to say anything he wanted to; but that our flag deserved at least minimal protection because of its unique role. It should not be “just another symbol.” This dissenting opinion also noted the irony in the result from the majority opinion, “The government may conscript men into the Armed Forces where they must fight and perhaps die for the flag, but the government may not prohibit the public burning of the banner under which they fight.” JUNE 2017

PRP
New technology helps grow hair with body’s own platelets. By Elizabeth Hausman
PLATELET RICH plasma (PRP) is an exciting new and easy treatment option for hair loss. Around the country patients have been seeing incredible results with this simple and effective treatment. Not only is PRP easy to administer, it’s also a cost effective alternative to hair transplantation that can produce good results at a fraction of the cost. PRP has been used in the medical community for years. Studied in over 6,500 published scientific papers, the use of PRP has been used as a regenerative treatment for decades. PRP has shown great effectiveness in the process of wound healing, tissue rejuvenation, accelerating recovery from injuries, and most recently PRP has become another treatment option for those suffering from hair loss due to its hair regrowth potential. Hair loss can be a frustrating and challenging problem to treat but thanks to PRP there is now a more affordable, low risk option available. Published studies suggest that the growth factors in PRP play an important role in regulating hair follicle function, making it an effective treatment for both male and female-pattern hair loss. The basic premise of the treatment is when the growth factors in PRP are injected into the affected areas of the scalp, they send cellular signals to reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles, helping them to produce thicker, stronger, and longer hair that in turn results in a fuller head of hair with better coverage and less shedding.
HOW IS THIS TREATMENT PERFORMED? It’s a very quick and easy procedure. At the time of treatment a small blood sample is obtained from the patient, this blood is collected in a special blood tube designed for PRP, the tube is then spun in a special PRP centrifuge machine at a high speed in order to separate the platelets from the red blood cells. This high concentrate of isolated platelets is the PRP (AKA liquid gold). After the PRP is ready, it’s then injected into the areas of the scalp where there is evidence of weak or thinning growth. A typical protocol includes an initial series of three treatments spaced four weeks apart with a maintenance treatment needed approximately every six to nine months.
