Both died within hours of each other on July 4, 1826. Both had directly challenged the British Empire. Both patriots had been president. They became bitter enemies; but in retirement, became close friends. Presidential elections were different in many ways back then than they are now. Perhaps most significantly, while the individual who received the most votes in the Electoral College became president, the person who finished second became vice president. I have been involved in the healthcare arena for over 20 years. I started as an EMT in 1997 and served in the U.S. Army as a combat medic. I continued serving in the Army and Arizona National Guard for eight years while I earned my nursing license. I then worked as an ER and oncology nurse while I attended Arizona State University earning my bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. Upon graduation, I continued on to chiropractic school at Palmer College of Chiropractic. I also spent time earning a post-doctorate board certification in sports medicine and injury management from Southern California University Health Sciences. I have always had the desire and entrepreneurial spirit to start my own practice, so I opened my first clinic in 2007. 2W hy did you decide to open your business in the North Valley? I had a vision for my healthcare clinic and felt the North Valley was underserved. Even currently, there are no other facilities in the area that offer the variety of complementary services that Pure Health & Wellness provides. I believed this
region would grow tremendously in the future and I wanted to get in at the ground level, providing support and being actively involved in the community.
2 Do you own/operate any other businesses? As a freshman in college I was partners in developing an online personal training and nutrition business. I spent countless hours assisting in creating every aspect of this business, from logo development to operations and marketing. I was so proud of what we had built and I believed the business was unique and innovative. Well, it failed miserably! I was pretty devastated and did not know where I went wrong. However, one thing I learned then, and continue to learn now, is that you gain great knowledge in every failure. In fact, I no longer perceive any event or venture as a failure; rather, I learn from every mistake and build upon my experience. 2W hat are some of the most challenging aspects of running your business? The healthcare world is very volatile, to say the least. With changing political climates and the in-turn effects on the insurance industry, it requires a successful business model to be more flexible and fluid than most would probably be comfortable with.

BE CAREFUL ON what your hobbies turn into. Take Bob and Angie Adler, the owners of The Tennessee Grill & Bar, for instance. After purchasing a smoker on a routine Costco run, they increasingly hosted more and more people at their home for local barbeque weekend meals. After the gatherings grew too large to handle the crowds, it was time to relocate and start making their backyard barbeque into more than a hobby. Opening up in 2013, just behind the Discount Tire at the corner of Anthem Way and 43rd Drive, The Tennessee Grill has been thriving and turning out dish after dish of homemade delicious meals for all to enjoy. Seven days a week they offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We visited a couple of times, in order to give you a well-rounded vision of their offerings. On the first visit we started at breakfast time. The menu is full of different breakfast selections, but after long contemplation we settled on two items. The first was the country-fried steak ($11). This is a large piece of steak that is battered and fried like fried chicken. It’s then served with country sausage gravy on top to make it a Southern helping of comfort food. Along with the steak, you get two eggs cooked any way you choose, potatoes, and toast. The breading batter was perfectly done and is not too dense or overwhelming to muddle the flavor of the steak. The gravy had a little kick, but wasn’t too strong as to lose the sausage flavor. The next breakfast item we enjoyed was the steak and eggs ($16). This features a piece of 8-ounce flat iron steak cooked to your desired temperature. It’s served with two eggs cooked to any style and your choice of potatoes and toast. The steak is very tender, which isn’t always the case when it comes to flat iron cuts of steak. But the preparation and cooking was done well to keep the steak from getting too tough. When mixed with the eggs, slightly over on this visit, the steak makes a great flavor combination. Often when someone orders steak and eggs, the steak is an after thought for the dish, but not at this restaurant. On another day we returned for dinner. We ordered the pretzel bites ($7.50). This is a basket of euphoric delight, a truly perfect starter for anyone who loves soft pretzels. It consists of warm mini pretzel bites served with a warm cheese sauce. You can also ask for ranch dressing, as I always do when getting a soft pretzel. They are about the size of a baby carrot, but warm and soft. The ranch dressing does not taste out of a bottle, and adds the next level of flavor for you to enjoy beyond the cheese. On this occasion, we were given a small cast iron skillet of corn bread with whipped butter and a crisp piece of bacon. It was given to us, as well as other tables, with no charge associated with it. We also ordered the OMG BLT ($12). If you like a BLT sandwich and have ever felt like there was not enough bacon to really satisfy the B in BLT, than look no further than this menu item. This sandwich is piled high with Applewood smoked bacon, and then served with crisp lettuce and slices of perfectly ripened toma-
toes. Served on your choice of toast with a slight smear of mayonnaise, we opted for Sourdough bread. It comes with your choice of side, but for just a small additional charge ($1.99), you can choose from their more extravagant side items. We chose the Tennessee twister fries. Let me start by saying, “Yum.” It was a large side helping of potatoes that are similar to spun spuds that you find at the fair. The sandwich was very large, but most importantly delicious. To test out their barbeque, we chose the BBQ sampler ($19). It comes with a few ribs, 2-ounces of pulled pork on a slider bun, 2-ounces of pulled chicken on a slider bun, 4-ounces of brisket, and 3-ounces of hot links. That is just the protein portion of this dish, which is already a great value considering the amount of meat you get. But then you also get to choose two side items. We choose barbeque baked beans and coleslaw. The Tennessee Grill’s meat is cooked at low temperature over a long time period, or as they say in the barbeque game, low and slow. You can taste the smokiness on the brisket and hot link sausages. If that wasn’t enough, you have your choice of four of their homemade and available for sale BBQ sauces to use to add more flavor to your dish. The meat items were all very tender and had enough flavor without adding additional sauce. You could feed two to three people with this sampler, so if you’re going to tackle it alone, be hungry. The staff was quick, pleasant, and eager to answer my many questions. The restaurant has a bar section on one side of the building, while the dining room is on the opposite side. This allows for the noise from the bar area to not bleed into the dining room section. They do offer some dinner specials on certain nights, which I would keep an eye out for. If you’re looking for down home, southern style cooking, but with a family friendly atmosphere, mosey on down to The Tennessee Grill & Bar. No cowboy boots or hat required, although it wouldn’t be out of place.

TODAY, IN Everytown, USA, someone’s written down a list of items needed for a barbeque they’re throwing. With the list and coupons in hand, they park their car at the store and, while approaching the automatic sliding doors, notice a sign written in fine print, which reads: “Due to the possibility of diversion, we offer no guarantee on items purchased here which may be compromised with bacteria, out-of-date, discontinued, without batch codes, diluted, counterfeit, unauthorized, used or stolen.” I don’t know about you but I’d buy my items somewhere else.
DIVERSION Unfortunately, many of the professional product lines sold outside a salon or the product’s website are considered diverted. Until the year 2000, I’d never heard the term used regarding salon products. In fact, I don’t remember giving it a first thought (let alone a second one). Nevertheless, in layman’s terms diversion is simply the purchase and sale of items outside a manufacturer’s authorized distribution channels. With each change of hands the price goes up (every buyer making a profit), until you, the consumer, make the final purchase. Because there are no definite laws against diversion, stores and online sites are inundated with “professional” hair care lines.
SUPERMARKETS, DISCOUNT STORES, AND ONLINE Honestly, is it really a big deal to purchase your products at the store or order them
online instead of directly from a professional? Well, it depends on what you’re actually paying for. Six years ago a client showed us a bottle of Biosilk Silk Therapy she’d bought at a retail discount store. After one use she realized something was wrong, so she brought it to the salon to find out what the issue was. It didn’t take long to discover that the Silk Therapy bottle was emptied and replaced with baby oil. Sadly, this isn’t the only story I’ve come across since learning about diversion. Products are shipped from the manufacturer to a distributor. From there, unauthorized retailers get their hands into the mix and buy these salon exclusive products on sale. Often, they’re stored in a warehouse before being shipped throughout the country, but that can take months or even years, and by then some have become damaged or have expired. Without quality control, products can crystallize, dry out, or oxidize, causing the ingredients to disintegrate. The chemicals break down, acidify, or become contaminated with bacteria, which can lead to eye or skin infection. In fact, some labels, duplicated and placed on bottles filled with counterfeit products, are sold as the real deal.
SHELF LIFE Whether sitting on a store shelf, your shower floor, or in a box stacked in a warehouse, unopened hair care products have a shelf life of approximately three years. However, when exposed to air, dilution, bacteria found on hands, heat or light, their life is reduced in half. Although the federal government doesn’t require expiration dates

Depicted as an opened lid on a container, it’s marked with a number and the letter M. This indicates how many months a product maintains its quality before expiring.
CODES Not to be confused with barcodes, batch codes are used for tracking and are found on the side or bottom of the bottle. In cases of diversion, these are often removed to keep from being traced, and if a specific product is recalled, the customer is left to question their purchase.

Sun FAQs It’s July, and that means backyard barbeques, pool parties, and triple digit heat. Pharmacist Tara Storjohann sat down with fellow pharmacist Martin Faridian to learn more about sun safety. What is a sunburn? The sun emits powerful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can damage the RNA in skin cells. This aggravates the neighboring cells to mount an inflammatory response, which we recognize as a sunburn. Other effects of RNA damage include skin pigmentation (darkened skin) and the development of skin cancer.
What´s the difference between sunscreen and sunblock? Although the two terms are used interchangeably, sunblock contains metals like zinc and titanium that act as barriers against harmful UV rays. Sunscreens absorb the UVA rays before they reach the dermal layer. Consider sunblock if you burn easily.
What does SPF mean? SPF stands for sun protection factor. An SPF of 15 means that the sunscreen only allows 1/15th of harmful radiation to reach the skin. It’s important to apply sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure to allow it to be properly absorbed.
When should I reapply? Sunscreen should be reapplied about every two hours, regardless of the SPF value. Even if you are using waterproof sunscreen, reapplication after swimming is highly recommended.
How can I reduce my risk of developing a sunburn? Whenever outdoors, try to limit your exposure to the sun’s harmful rays through physical barriers (long sleeve shirts, hats, etc.), chemical barriers (like sunscreen), and staying in the shade whenever possible. Keep an eye out for high pollution advisory reports, as the sun’s rays can be extra powerful on those days.
What can I use to treat a sunburn? The first thing you can do is cool the skin by applying a cool compress to the sunburn or taking a cool bath or shower. The next step is to apply a moisturizer that contains aloe vera or soy to reduce inflammation and help the body repair itself. Another option is to apply low dose (0.5-1%) hydrocortisone cream to help decrease the pain, inflammation, and speed healing. It’s important to drink plenty of water and to stay hydrated as this also provides the body with moisture and helps the healing process. Pain relievers like ibuprofen (Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) can also be used to minimize the inflammation from the sunburn and help with the pain.
When might a sunburn require medical attention? If the sunburn blisters and covers a large area of the body, it’s best to have your healthcare provider check it out. Also, if signs of infection are present such as increasing pain, swelling, red streaks leading away from an open blister, or yellow drainage (pus) from an open blister medical attention is required. Finally, contact your healthcare provider right away if you experience extreme pain, fever, chills, confusion, or nausea along with the sunburn.
What should I avoid when I have a sunburn?
No! You can use any formulation you prefer because both forms provide adequate protection from the sun when applied correctly.
Petroleum jelly, butter, and oil-based products should be avoided because they clog the pores, which prevents the body from sweating and can trap the heat. Pain numbing creams such as benzocaine and lidocaine can cause allergies in some patients and will delay the healing process. You’ll also want to avoid tight fitting clothing, as this can irritate the burn.
