Wedding Bells Community members donate ceremony for Marine at Anthem Veterans Memorial.
PHOTO BY LAURI SVENDSEN PHOTOGRAPHY Veterans Day is not the only day of the year when Anthem residents honor their veterans. After learning about some difficult times a Marine and his fiancée had experienced over the past few years, volunteers came together to provide their wedding at the Anthem Veterans Memorial. “We wanted to show this couple our appreciation for his service by lending a helping hand when they needed renewed hope in their lives,” says organizer Elizabeth Turner. “It is not at all surprising to me to see the generosity of others who stepped in to help when news spread of the wedding plans. The Anthem Veterans Memorial was the perfect backdrop for the wedding, as it symbolizes this community’s appreciation for the service and sacrifice of our veterans.” “We can’t begin to express our gratitude for our amazing wedding. It was a dream come true. We so appreciate all the businesses and people who donated to provide us with a very special day. Hope and happiness define the start of our lives together and we vow to pay forward these acts of kindness as best we can,” say the newlyweds, Chad and Amanda Morely.

Bottom line, and bottoms up—I highly suggest The Brewer’s Tale: A History of the World According to Beer! Next? Believe it or not, another local author. M.D. (Michael Dirk) Thalmann is actually a regular columnist for our sister publication North Valley Magazine, and has written what looks to be maybe the most unusual and intriguing book we’ve read yet. It’s called The 13 Lives of a Television Repairman and here’s what we’re in for: Arthur is all alone now, he killed the world. He had it all, but that wasn’t enough, so he went and ruined everything. God left in a hurry when the atomic bombs went off, and forgot to take poor Arthur with him. Now he lives in a sealed bunker under an irradiated wasteland once known as Florida, and watches the worlds he missed, the possibilities he prevented, in his ingenious, insidious creation: The Alternate Reality Generator. Fascinating, and so different, right? Let’s dive in and then Michael will chat with us a bit when we enter 2017! Happy holidays and happy reading!

Modern Presidents and Christmas Since FDR, our presidents have offered Christmas remarks, often at the lighting of the national Christmas tree. On Christmas Eve in 1949, Harry Truman noted, “Let us not on this Christmas, in our enjoyment of the abundance with which Providence has endowed us, forget those who, because of the cruelty of war, have no shelter—those multitudes for whom, in the phrase of historic irony, there is no room in the inn.” On December 17, 1962, JFK remarked, “For nearly 2,000 years the message of Christmas, the message of peace and good will towards all men, has been the guiding star of our endeavors... (Christmas) is the day when we remind ourselves that man can and must live in peace with his neighbors and that it is the peacemakers who are truly blessed.” Ronald Reagan’s 1981 Christmas Eve message included the following. “The Nativity story of nearly 20 centuries ago is known by all faiths as a hymn to the brotherhood of man. For Christians, it is the fulfillment of age-old prophecies and the reaffirmation of God’s great love for all of us. Through a generous Heavenly Father’s gift of His Son, hope and compassion entered a world weary with fear and despair and changed it for all time.”

Musical Sensations The Boulder Creek High School choir is singing their way to New York City. By Zoey Myer
UNDER THE DIRECTION of Choral Director Kirk Douglas, Boulder Creek High School’s Varsity Choir is going to New York City for the first time. With hard work and a lot of practice, the BCHS Varsity Choir has been invited to travel to New York in 2017. The varsity choirs include: Broadway Bound (mixed show), Honor Choir, Bella Voce, and Women’s Show. Broadway Bound is the top performance choir with not just vocals but choreography as well. With 35 male and female members, this choir is a favorite. The Honor Choir is the top vocal choir made up of men and women who sing incredibly and constantly receive superior ratings. As the name suggests, Women’s Show consists of all girls and they are strictly a performance choir. Bella Voce is an all-girls vocal choir. All of these choirs require auditions for admission and are capped at a specific number. With practice every day as a class, some practices on the weekends, and more practice if need be, the BCHS Choir is better than ever. With a completely different at-

slaw a coal-powered steamboat built in 1912. The trip on Lake Wakatipu includes a visit to the Walter Peak High Country Farm to observe sheep shearing and herding, as well as to enjoy a delicious gourmet lunch. We flew from Queenstown to Auckland where we visited friends and took two interesting boat trips to Waiheke Island and Rangitoto Island. Visit Rotorua via a tour coach bus, as it includes a boat ride through the Glowworm Caves at Waitomo, where thousands of tiny creatures light up the cave roof; it’s like seeing a star-studded sky. The impressive Mitai Maori Cultural Show in Rotorua included traditional folklore, dances, singing, canoe ceremony on the sacred spring, bush walk to see glowworms, and a dinner feast. We enjoyed our visit to Napier, a city devastated by an earthquake in 1931 and rebuilt in the art deco style. Napier is gateway to the Hawke’s Bay wine producing area. Like Australia, New Zealand prides itself on the high quality of its boutique vineyards. After a few days in Napier with walks along the beach, we returned to Auckland. I’m ending with a popular Maori greeting, which I used several times a day on the trip: Kia Ora which means hello / be well / be healthy / all the best. It always brought a smile.

Travis and Cassity Trexler Real estate duo offers a personal and educated approach to home buying. THIS MONTH, 85086 Magazine catches up with Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce founding members Travis and Cassity Trexler to learn more about their husbandwife real estate business. 1 What were the circumstances surrounding you opening your business? Born and raised around real estate, it was an easy career choice for Cassity in 2007 when she left her corporate gig to help buyers and sellers make their dreams come true. She chose D.L. Jones & Associates as her brokerage in 2014.

Travis, a pilot and flight instructor, decided to join Cassity in 2015, forming the Trexler Team. Owning our own real estate business just made sense for our family. It provides flexibility with our kids and allows us to do what we love— help others. 1 Why did you decide to open your business in the North Valley? Living and working in North Phoenix came naturally to us. Cassity was born and raised in Williams, and Travis was born and raised in Tucson. We feel like it’s the best of both worlds. Living

What’s your biggest business pet peeve? Poor communication is our biggest pet peeve. Effective communication is essential for smooth transactions and strong relationships. What are you most proud of? We’re most proud of our solid relationship, our two children, and the business we started by knocking on doors. on the northern perimeter of Phoenix allows us to take advantage of all that metropolitan Phoenix has to offer. We can enjoy the beauty of the desert and are only a quick drive away from the cool pines of northern Arizona. 1 What are some of the most challenging aspects of running your business? The most challenging aspect of running our own business is finding a good balance between work and family. 1 What differentiates your business from your competitors? What sets us apart is educating ourselves above and beyond the minimum state requirements. We have our negotiation expert certification, accredited buyers representative designation, and many hours of graduate realtor classes. We also invest a lot of time in our clients (both buyers and sellers). When we list a property, professional staging and photographs are included with additional advertising that make our listings stand out above others. 1D o you participate in any local philanthropic efforts? If so, what and why? Travis is very proud of the time he invests in Skykids, an organization that helps build self-esteem and confidence for special needs children through flight. We also enjoy volunteering and helping with our children’s extracurricular activities and at their school. 1 What does the future hold for your business? We’ll continue helping families, individuals, and investors achieve the American dream by providing a personal and highly educated approach to buying and selling homes. 1 What’s one of your favorite memories/experiences as an Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce member? One of our favorite chamber memories was when we hosted the monthly business event with Daisy Mountain Painting. It was lively with a band, and everyone had a great time socializing, and there was a lot of networking going on. DECEMBER 2016

Holiday Crafts
Try these wreath and ornament project ideas for a homespun holiday. By Shannon Fisher Photos by Shannon Fisher Photography
DECEMBER IS here and it’s time for holiday cheer. We love to make gifts this time of year that don’t take too much time to create. An easy craft to try is a festive wreath to keep or give as a gift. We made one with a clip-on decoration that took about 10 minutes. Start with a small foam wreath. We used one spool of burlap ribbon and wrapped it around the wreath until we covered the entire circle. We made sure to only overlap at the edges so that we had enough ribbon for the entire wreath. We used hot glue to secure the fabric and added a cute clip-on bird decoration. The next wreath was made the same way, but with a different ribbon. We also added a string of little clips to attach ideas of how we want to help others this season, which, as a family, we wrote on pieces of pre-cut paper and then clipped to the wreath. Throughout this month, we’ll pick a note off the wreath and carry out what it says. It’s a fun way to give back. Note: I found all of the items we needed for the wreaths at the Dollar Tree store, but Walmart and any craft store will have these items as well. Another easy idea is to use any leftover tea lights you may have lying around. We bought a bunch of battery operated ones for Halloween and now we use them for ornaments. We used a permanent marker to draw on a snowman face and

Anthem’s Lennon Hammond enjoys national acting success in Broadway show. By Michelle Talsma Everson Photos by Michele Celentano
WHILE MOST KIDS might be excited to have a line or two in the school play, Anthem’s 9-year-old Lennon Hammond was recently cast in his first national tour of a Broadway show. Already a local star with Musical Theatre of Anthem (MTA), which was founded in 2008 by his parents Jackie and Jeff Hammond, he is performing in the national tour of Fun Home, described as a “groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning Best Musical.” “I watched my twin sister Noelle in shows at Musical Theatre of Anthem and wanted to do shows like her,” Lennon says about how he started acting. “I’ve been acting for two and a half years now. I have taken dance and acting classes and have watched countless shows.” According to his proud parents, Lennon performed 10 shows on stage at MTA, including some with his twin sister, and two dance
recitals before being cast this fall for the national tour of Fun Home. “Based on Alison Bechdel’s best-selling graphic memoir, Fun Home introduces us to Alison at three different ages as she explores and unravels the many mysteries of her childhood that connect with her in surprising new ways,” cites the official description of the show. “A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.” In Fun Home, Lennon plays a character named John. Because the show travels across the country, he will be on the road acting in various cities well into fall 2017. Both Lennon and his mom Jackie admit that it’s an adjustment to be away from home. “It is sad and I miss my family and friends at home, but this is such a wonderful experience that I’m having a terrific time,” Lennon says. “We get to see a lot of cities and meet great new friends. The creative team and everyone involved in production are so great to work with. I got great training at MTA so I felt good going into this experience and knew a lot of what to expect.” Jackie helps Lennon adjust by accompanying him on tour. “I think that he is a natural actor, and was the right type for his role,” she says. “He is likable on stage, this role definitely has the cuteness factor. But, the writing is just phenomenal so the characters are all very touching in different ways.” With an infectious personality, Lennon has made himself at home among his cast mates. “Lennon brings exuberance and infectious joy to Fun Home,” says Micah Young, the play’s music director. “He is delightful to work with and, along with the other children, he is one of the many highlights of the show.” “I have loved working with Lennon on the show,” adds asso-
Lennon Hammond in the MTA production, 101 Dalmations.

Hot Bagels & Deli
Get your breakfast fix at this tasty North Valley joint. By Andrew Leach

ARE YOU FROM the East Coast and miss the lure of the local bagel shop and delicatessen? Well, I have a local place for you to try this weekend. Hot Bagels and Deli will fill that craving. Located in several locations throughout Phoenix, its North Valley outpost offers a variety of tasty sandwich and breakfast staples. Here are a few items that are favorites in my household. To start off with, it’s important to offer breakfast sandwiches. But microwaving eggs is not the same as having a fried egg fresh from the griddle. So, the first item I want to tell you about is a New Jersey favorite and they do it well here. Now let me help clarify something for the non-New Jersey people. While the state is much smaller than Arizona, the two sections are divided on culinary terminology. There is a pork product that both sections enjoy on their breakfast sandwiches. If you’re a southern Jersey boy or girl, you call it a pork roll. If you’re from the more proper northern section of the state, you call it by the company name, Taylor Ham. But it’s like calling a facial tissue a Kleenex, they’re the same thing but one is a brand name that transcends the product. So, I present the Taylor Ham, fried egg and cheese on a plain bagel ($5) as the first item you must order. The Taylor Ham

Holiday CastIron Chili
Mama G’s recipe for a hearty dish best served hot. By Leann Grunwald
CAST-IRON CHILI has been a holiday family favorite since childhood. Made with McCormick Chili O mix, it’s just like great grandmother made it. This chili is garnished with rich cheddar and can be served with sour cream and with traditional buttered saltine crackers. Chili once meant beans served in a spicy tomato sauce. Historic newspapers suggest that chili first consisted of a powder and meat. Today, chili is a blend of chili beans and chili peppers, kidney beans, sauce, and ground beef.

2 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil 2 large yellow onions, small diced (equal sizes) 1 pound 80/20 hamburger, seasoned well with sea salt and fresh cracked black pepper 4 15-oz. cans chili beans (drained) 2 15-oz. cans kidney beans (not drained) 3 8-oz cans tomato sauce 3 empty tomato cans filled with water (because, this is how grandmother did it) 2 packets McCormick Chili Seasoning Mix, Original. Please, no substitutions 2 cups cheddar cheese Preheat large cast-iron pan to medium high. Add olive oil. Add onions and allow to caramelize, then push to the side. Don’t squish. Add hamburger and allow it to sear for two minutes, turn and allow to sear again before mixing it with onions. Scrape bottom of pan, often. Caramelization is released and this is your flavor. While this is cooking, put beans, tomato sauce, and water into a large, deep pan. Then sprinkle this mixture with the chili seasoning packets. Bring to a boil, stirring often. Reduce to simmer and add the cooked hamburger mixture. Simmer for one hour. Stir often, scraping the bottom of the pan. Serve hot in a chili bowl and top with cheddar cheese and an optional dollop of sour cream, along with buttered saltine crackers and a glass of ice cold bubbly seltzer water.

HIIT helps eliminate excess body fat and jump start your metabolism. By Stephanie Dorworth
A WELL-ROUNDED training program combining strength training and HIIT (high intensity interval training) is the answer to beating the lingering weight gain that swallows the majority of us over the holiday season. We all know what strength training is but what is HIIT? HIIT is a unique exercise routine that is intended to eliminate excess body fat. HIIT consists of quick bursts of intense exercise over a short period of time. The principle behind this method is that the body works so hard during the intense workout that it continues to expend energy, even after the workout is over. HIIT is different than regular interval training because it involves alternating low intensity with maximal energy (100 percent effort) exercises. Whereas regular interval training involves alternating low and moderate/high intensity exercises. Why is HIIT better than steady state cardio like going on a long run? HIIT is anabolic for your muscles instead of catabolic, so it maintains your muscles instead of breaking them down.
Steady state cardio can be taxing on your muscles because with no rest periods the ATP (adenosine triphosphate) system cannot recover. The objective data proving the effectiveness of HIIT varies, however HIIT is six times better for fat loss according to one source and 50 percent more effective according to another. One reason why is that your metabolism is increased for the next 48 hours and oxygen consumption is increased for the next two hours, which results in more calorie burn. Burn fat while maintaining muscle with HIIT. How can HIIT be done? Practicing one to three times a week is a good start—preferably on non-leg strength training days. My favorite form of HIIT is alternating walking with sprints because I can complete it at an outdoor field in our beautiful Arizona weather. For those of you with lower body injuries or arthritis, a better choice may be stationary bike intervals. HIIT can be performed many ways, but these are my favorites:
Sprints HIGH: On a track or field, sprint as fast as you can. LOW: Slow it down with a walk.
Deadmills HIGH: Keep the treadmill off and sprint your heart out to self-propel the belt. LOW: Hop off and walk for the low intensity portion.
Cycle or Stationary Bicycle Sprints HIGH: Turn up the resistance to high and then sprint as fast as possible. LOW: Turn the resistance back down to as low as it goes and cycle slowly.
Sled Push Sprints HIGH: Put weight on the sled and push it as you sprint across the room. LOW: Slow it down by walking.

blood in order to turbo charge the microneedling treatment. WHAT IS COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY OR MICRO-NEEDLING? Micro-needling or collagen induction therapy is a minimally invasive skin-rejuvenation procedure that involves the use of a medical device that contains multiple tiny sterile needles. The needles are used to puncture the skin to create a controlled skin injury. Each puncture creates a microchannel that triggers a healing response in the body. Through the innate process of healing, these microscopic wounds trigger the production of new collagen and elastin. This process ultimately results in an improvement in skin texture and firmness, as well as reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks. HOW IS PRP OBTAINED AND USED DURING A VAMPIRE FACIAL? A sample of blood is withdrawn from a patient’s arm—just like when a person gets a routine blood test at a laboratory. Usually
one or two tubes of blood are taken (about one or two teaspoons). The blood tube is then placed in a device called a centrifuge that spins the blood around quickly to separate the platelets from the red blood cells. The platelets are then siphoned out of the tube and infused into the skin during the micro-needling treatment. WHAT IS THE ADDED BENEFIT OF USING PRP WITH MICRO-NEEDLING? The platelet rich plasma contains key growth factors that possess regenerative and revitalizing properties that increase wound healing capabilities and collagen production. Practitioners are finding that more noticeable results are obtained with fewer treatments than micro-needling alone and downtime is minimized with the addition of PRP. IS THE VAMPIRE FACIAL PAINFUL? Although it may sound a bit scary, it really isn’t very painful at all. Prior to treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied and patients numb for approximately 30 minutes
while their blood is being drawn and spun. The numbing is very effective and patients are generally quite comfortable during the procedure. HOW MANY TREATMENTS DOES A PERSON NEED AND WHEN CAN THEY EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS? For optimal results, all clients will need a series of treatments. Most clients can expect to receive four to six treatments initially spaced every four weeks, which is the amount of time it takes to stimulate new collagen. After the initial series of treatments, clients will need one to two treatments per year for maintenance. Results are most noticeable after a few treatments and will continue to improve over time as new collagen is stimulated. WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR THE VAMPIRE FACIAL? Anyone wanting to address changes in skin tone, texture, sun damage, acne scaring, stretch marks, pigmentation issues, or lines and wrinkles. This treatment is safe for all skin types.

Menopause Local pharmacists talk natural remedies and lifestyle adjustments to deal with menopause symptoms.
By Tara Storjohann and Rebecca Yousefzadeh
Pharmacists across the world get this question frequently so we thought it was about time we shed light on the Big M, aka menopause. Many women are frustrated with their menopause symptoms but are hesitant to start hormone replacement therapy. In this brief article, we hope to address the question, “Are there any other good options to treat menopause symptoms prior to resorting to prescription medication?” Menopause is a natural and biological part of life that many women dread, with good reason. Menopause war stories are filled with memories of mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. Although this is a natural part of the aging process, it can certainly leave you with that lovely feeling of impending doom. Menopausal symptoms are due to a decrease of estrogen, so the first treatment that may come to mind is hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Unfortunately, HRT comes with risks and side effects, such as nausea, bloating, breast pain/tenderness, and it also puts you at higher risk for breast cancer. Although HRT may be effective, there are many natural remedies and lifestyle adjustments for menopause symptoms that you could try before resorting to hormone replacement therapy. Black cohosh: This herbal treatment is derived from a species of buttercup, a flowering plant common in the woods and fields of North America, Europe, and Asia. Black cohosh is popular as an alternative to HRT to treat hot flashes, mood disturbances, excessive sweating, palpitations, and vaginal dryness. It’s available in tablets, tincture, liquid, and teas, which may take about two weeks to feel its effects. Dried black cohosh root is dosed at 40 to 200 milligrams daily in divided doses, which you could find at your local drug store in the supplements section. Some studies have shown that black cohosh may help with symptoms for up to one year, but evidence is mixed in its effectiveness. Safety and efficacy beyond one year has not been proven and black cohosh should not be taken if you have liver issues or liver damage. Consult with your healthcare provider if you have any medical conditions, such as history of breast cancer, blood pressure, or bleeding problems before taking black cohosh. Plant-derived estrogens: These are often referred to as phytoestrogens and may help alleviate some of the symptoms of menopause. Phytoestrogens are found in foods such as soybeans, chickpeas, lentils, flaxseed, grains, fruits, vegetables, and plants such as red clover. Only food forms of soy, such as tofu and soy milk, are recommended as (opposed to tablet or powder form of soy) to help

with hot flashes and night sweats. Flaxseed contains omega-3 fatty acids and lignans, which also can aid in the lowering of cholesterol as well as help with hot flashes. Whole flaxseed is difficult to digest, so ground flaxseed or oil flaxseed is recommended. Trigger avoidance: It’s important to try to pinpoint what triggers your hot flashes in order to avoid or minimize them. Triggers may include hot beverages, caffeine, spicy foods, alcohol, stress, hot weather, or even a warm room. Caffeine and alcohol are diuretics, which could lead to dehydration and aggravate hot flashes. Cold beverages: A cold glass of water or a fruit juice with antioxidant vitamins can help with the hot flashes and night sweats. Moderate exercise: Exercises like yoga, Pilates, and aerobic exercises can help with mood swings, sleep disruption, relieve stress, and of course, improve your overall quality of life. If you want to feel the benefits of yoga, try doing yoga about two to three times a week. As far as aerobic exercises, aim for about 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week. Some examples are walking, jogging, biking, and swimming, but any activity counts that keeps your heart rate up. Ladies, if you prefer to be around people when you work out and have a little fun, Zumba is a great option as well. Vaginal lubricants: Astroglide, K-Y jelly, topical vitamin E, and moisturizers like Replens can help with discomfort caused by vaginal dryness. Apply Replens three times a week to provide soothing moisture. Choose products that don’t contain glycerin because it can cause burning or irritation in women who are sensitive to that chemical. Relaxation techniques: Getting enough sleep, about seven to eight hours a night, is also crucial and practicing relaxation techniques can help. Relaxation techniques include deep breathing, paced breathing, massage, and progressive muscle relaxation. Kegel exercises: Menopause can lead to urinary incontinence for some women. Kegel exercises, which are pelvic floor muscle ex-
