“ BLACK LIVES HAVE ALWAYS MATTERED, WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN IMPORTANT, WE HAVE ALWAYS MET SUFFERING, WE HAVE ALWAYS SUCCEEDED, REGARDLESS. AND NOW IS THE TIME. I AIN’T WAITING. I AIN’T WAITING. I HAVE BEEN BORN IN THIS COUNTRY. I’M 28-YEARS-OLD. BORN AND RAISED IN LONDON. AND FOR A TIME, EVERY BLACK PERSON UNDERSTANDS AND REALISES THE FIRST TIME YOU ARE REMINDED THAT YOU WERE BLACK. YOU REMEMBER. EVERY BLACK PERSON IN HERE REMEMBERED WHEN ANOTHER PERSON REMINDED YOU THAT YOU WERE BLACK. ALL THOSE PROTESTERS ON THE OTHER SIDE, PROTESTING AGAINST WHAT WE WANT TO DO, PROTESTING AGAINST WHAT WE WANT TO TRY AND ACHIEVE. DARN YOU, BECAUSE THIS IS SO VITAL. I NEED YOU GUYS TO UNDERSTAND. I NEED YOU GUYS TO UNDERSTAND. I NEED YOU TO UNDERSTAND HOW PAINFUL THIS SHIT IS. I NEED YOU TO UNDERSTAND HOW PAINFUL IT IS. TO BE REMINDED EVERY DAY THAT YOUR RACE MEANS NOTHING. WE ARE A PHYSICAL REPRESENTATION OF OUR SUPPORT FOR GEORGE FLOYD. WE ARE A PHYSICAL REPRESENTATION IN OUR SUPPORT FOR SANDRA BLAND. WE ARE A PHYSICAL REPRESENTATION OF OUR SUPPORT FOR TRAYVON MARTIN. WE ARE A PHYSICAL REPRESENTATION OF OUR SUPPORT FOR STEPHEN LAWRENCE, FOR MARK DUGGAN. IT IS VERY, VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE KEEP CONTROL TO THIS MOMENT AND WE MAKE THIS AS PEACEFUL AS POSSIBLE. WE MAKE THIS AS PEACEFUL AND AS ORGANISED AS POSSIBLE. BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT GUYS, THEY WANT US TO MESS UP. THEY WANT US TO BE DISORGANISED, BUT NOT TODAY.
NOT TODAY. NOT TODAY. TODAY IS ABOUT INNOCENT PEOPLE WHO WERE HALFWAY THROUGH THAT PROCESS. WE DON’T KNOW WHAT GEORGE FLOYD COULD HAVE ACHIEVED. WE DON’T KNOW WHAT SANDRA BLAND COULD HAVE ACHIEVED, BUT TODAY WE’RE GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT WON’T BE AN ALIEN THOUGHT TO OUR YOUNG ONES. I’M SURE YOU ALL CAME TODAY, YOU LEFT YOUR KIDS. THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT’S GOING ON. TODAY’S THE DAY THAT WE REMIND THEM THAT WE ARE DEDICATED, AND THIS IS A LIFELONG DEDICATION. GUYS, WE DON’T LEAVE HERE AND STOP. WE DON’T LEAVE HERE AND STOP. THIS IS LONGEVITY. SOME OF YOU ARE ARTISTS. SOME OF YOU ARE BANKERS. SOME OF YOU ARE LAWYERS. SOME OF YOU OWN STORES… YOU ARE IMPORTANT. YOUR INDIVIDUAL POWER, YOUR INDIVIDUAL RIGHT IS VERY, VERY IMPORTANT. WE CAN ALL JOIN TOGETHER TO MAKE THIS A BETTER WORLD. WE CAN ALL DO IT TOGETHER TO MAKE THIS SPECIAL. WE CAN ALL JOIN TOGETHER. ” John Boyega Hyde Park, London - 03 June 2020 5

The experiences of Chris Cooper (a pioneering gay man who brought gay characters to our favourite comics) who was birdwatching when a white woman called the police claiming he was threatening her life, or Ahmaud Arbery, who was jogging when two white men followed and shot him, reflect the racist attitudes that permeate US society. But these experiences aren’t just limited to America. Us Brits have never been squeaky clean on the matter of racism and equality either. experimental side of Tyler, and by the time ‘Flower Boy’ was released, we were clearly dealing with a completely different artist. Songs like ‘Garden Shed’ began to breach his sexuality and his difficulties coming to terms with that, with every song set against a gorgeous backdrop of chords and live instrumentation. Despite this extreme change in tone and sound, I don’t think anyone was expecting an album like IGOR. Loud, coarse and incredibly delicate at the same time, IGOR is unlike any album I’ve ever heard. His production is impeccable and the narrative of the album tells the painfully raw journey of him losing his male lover to a woman, in a ‘Call Me By Your Name’ like fashion (a film that has clearly influenced Tyler’s visual style). The emotions on this album are very close to the surface, and listening to it is a jarring, at times unsettling, but incredibly rewarding experience. We are allowed an intimately close look

Afterlife
vision Gervais has created is what sticks with you the most. There are no fairytale endings, or some magical wand that transforms everything back to how it was. We are watching a truly personal reflection of someone going through the stages of grief, from waking up to going to sleep. Tony (Gervais) shows us what it means to be human, with an inherently British response to losing a loved one. Afterlife’s view on adult life is what The Inbetweeners were to a typical British Secondary School life - raw & real. Tony’s earnest attempt to be happy - or at the very least not miserable - gives us the enjoyment of Gervais’ brutally honest comedy we would usually find him performing at the Golden Globes. If you are not a fan of Ricky Gervais as a comedian, do not fear, as he is as never seen before. We see a caring, affectionate side that is usually savoured for his animal rights tweets. Afterlife brings to life every emotion you have, but without pulling on them like you would find in over-dramatised films about love and loss. The show’s strong core character group is what makes the character of Tony (Gervais) come to life even more. We watch as he slowly recognises that the world doesn’t revolve around his problems, and that

of possibly the world’s biggest and most well known sports brand. The book runs in a chronological order, starting from his early days as a track and field student who loved to run. The honesty that joins parts of the stories, is when he openly admits to not being the best at what he does. It is somewhat humbling to read about how he removed his ego and focused on those who would increase his products’ popularity far better than he ever could on field. Yes, the stories have that typical American up bringing air about them. ‘Oh no, the kid who wants to start a business could only borrow the money from his ex banker dad, how tough that must’ve been’. But what I like about how Knight writes his personal struggles is that he does not waiver from admitting he was fortunate enough to have access to a few things that helped him. There is no questioning that it was his undeterred determination that cemented his business model. And without his natural entrepreneur skills, it would’ve never worked. This is what makes the story wonderful to read.
