PRESIDENT’S REPORT Bill Campbell As I sit and write this report it finally appears that spring has arrived! The grass is turning green, the trees are budding and the dreaded dandelions are flowering. It has been a long hard winter at this ranch in 2016/17. One of the worst this gray haired guy can recall. Four blizzards. The last one was one of the worst in recorded history. There were numerous reports of livestock losses. Hopefully it did not affect your farm too badly. I am sure there will be lingering effects that will be noticed at weaning time. Yearling prices have bounced up a bit in April which is good news. There are so many factors that affect cattle prices that a producer can barely keep pace with the industry changes. There is the changing Canadian dollar, Brazil meat inspector scandals, feed grain prices, cattle inventories and of course, our counterparts in the USA with their leader Mr. Trump and his rant on NAFTA, COOL and protectionism. They have never won one of these court challenges before and I don’t know what makes him so special that he believes he will. The other factor is the USA needs our resources and goods to sustain their domestic consumption. Hopefully feeders will turn a profit on last year’s calves to be able to invest in the 2017 fall calf run. Bull sales were a bit softer this year which was reflective of last year’s calf prices and the general downturn in the beef industry. All things considered there were successful Limousin bull sales and private treaty sales which is positive

for the Limousin breed. Remember to keep only the good ones! There seems to be eternal optimism in the beef industry in Manitoba with the announcement in the Manitoba Budget of a Manitoba Beef Industry Strategy to help increase the Manitoba beef herd. The federal government also recognizes that agriculture has a huge role to play in our national growth. There are numerous projects and announcements to help producers enter and prosper in the industry. One of the main themes that seems to be missing in all these optimistic reports and projects is the term ‘profitability’. If the beef industry doesn’t figure out how to get a safe, reliable, healthy product to the consumer and share the information and profits with beef producers there may never be profitability for the commercial producers. The good news is that Limousin cattle can help fill the void that the beef industry currently finds itself in. Our provincial association will be hosting the Canadian National Junior Limousin Show and the Canadian Limousin Association Annual General Meeting in Portage La Prairie July 28-30, 2017.This is your personal invitation to come and enjoy and participate and learn how Limousin can increase your profitability. We have some informative speakers and some good old debating planned for everyone in attendance. Please come and enjoy some great Manitoba hospitality in Portage. Bill Campbell MLA President
