2021/2022 WINTER FEEDING With 2021 being one of the driest years on the prairies in decades, we like most cattle producers are facing challenges to find winter feed sources. With the growing season behind us and grazing season finished, producers will be moving into winter feeding mode. This year many producers are saying feed them what? With some areas getting moisture later in the season roughage sources have become more accessible. One positive from the extreme drought conditions and hot temperatures was the slough and swamp bottoms turned into an oasis being the only areas that were still green in early summer. If producers had access to the grasses, cat tails and other plants that grew in the swamp bottoms, and were able to harvest early in the season, this roughage source can meet the nutrition requirements for a dry cow in the first and even part of the second trimester thru the winter. Our farm took advantage of this opportunity and harvested what we could. With straw being in short supply we made many calls to grain producers asking for an opportunity to bale up any straw that was available. We had one producer offer us their corn stover. After the corn was combined, the producer then swathed the remaining stalks into the windrow the combined dropped. We then raked the field on top of those swathes trying to gather as many leaves and husks as possible and then baled. The cereal crops we planted and intended to combine suffered greatly from the drought conditions, with the condition of the crop we choose to silage half of those acres. With our 2021 silage and some extra that we carried over from 2020, we plan to stretch the roughage sources as far as we can. All our feed has been or will be tested and with the help or our nutritionist our goal will be to match the feeds to a class of cattle that can utilize it the best. This will help us use the least amount of pounds

10

MB Limousin News & Views Christmas Issue 2021

per head thru out the winter feeding and still achieve the gains we target. Feed testing and a good nutritionist are very much worth the effort and costs, for a year like this. It is the best way to utilize feed you have. Matching the different feed qualities that we have, to the right class of cattle at the time that they can best be utilized will be a challenge. With limited high-quality feeds, we will be looking at cattle performance and what that could be and what makes the most sense economically. For our operation this means sorting the cow herd into different feeding groups. Those that only need to maintain their current BCS and those that need to increase it. The rations will be developed for those management groups and adjusted throughout the feeding periods as needed. We will be backgrounding our 2021 calves to market them in 2022. Once they are settled after weaning we plan to put them on a lighter gaining ration compared to other years. This will reduce the amount of high energy feeds (barley/concentrates) that are required and will help keep feed costs more manageable. This will possibly change our marketable product for 2022, however managing costs are more prevalent at this time. To my fellow producers we are all in this together. Chins up! And let’s hope for moisture in the future months. pictures and information by Poplarview Stock Farm
