2014 SEASON: TILE TRENDS, THE LUXURY OF NATURE
Deco collection from Magna

The Chic collection from Sant’ Agostino
C
eramic manufacturers have mastered the art of imitating almost any material and the products newly-released this season, as expected, are stunning in their range and variety. Whether inspired by stone or wood, the veins of marble or the splendour of mother-of-pearl, a shimmering surface of water or the roughness of tree bark, this year’s sense of luxury is firmly rooted in nature. Ceramic tile designers have abandoned all decorative excesses and are now focusing on a product's quality and practicality. The classics are being revisited, this time with a new meaning. Floral relief motifs in simple and elegant lines are currently popular. The popular 'wood-effect' coverings have returned in newly-available dimensions and a modern design. 'Retro' is again in demand, with its warm shades and black and white geometric patterns, with their rich history and traditions as are fashionable ethnic motifs based on the skilful juxtaposition of different types of wood and natural stone, with ancient shapes and patterns embedded in the surface. Full-body 'stone-effect' porcelain tiles for exterior use are now less processed. Interior ceramic tiles are increasingly reproducing the effect of well-worn pavements, revealing grit and pebble fragments. Trendy rough 'sand-effect' coverings are softened by golden
hues and 'stone' effect tiling, with its natural marble veins, brings a natural vibe to any interior. The Mediterranean colour palette is ever present, imbibing the many varied shades of the earth and sea. Soft colour tones and a natural texture acquire a special charm when reproduced on the product as the 'mark of time': chafing and abrasion, chipping and surface deformation. These shape imperfections are typical of the particular vintage style – a model of warmth and comfort, perfect for living space. Ceramic mosaic never loses its appeal thanks to the use of new production methods, such as the unique 'monopressocottura', which translates from the Italian as 'single pressing and firing'. The technique is based on the use of dry clay and various glazes, which are pressed and bonded together at high pressure. A temperature of 1200°C and an 18 hour firing cycle guarantee the product's exceptional durability and hardwaring strength. The extensive colour range available allows manufacturers to produce items and products that cater for any taste. Contemporary design, however, is dominated by a trend towards nature; with this comes the use of natural colour tones, namely beige, light grey, sand, taupe and anthracite.

During repair work, the tiles can be laid directly onto the already exisiting floor to give a solid, seamless surface that is ready for immediate use. Creating your own spa at home is a dream which can now become reality based on a well-conceived and planned architectural and design project. Home spa complexes are similar to spa resorts, created on the shores of the Atlantic (Capetown, South Africa), and the Pacific Ocean (the Baja Peninsula, Mexico).

he designers from the architects Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects rationally used the mountainous coast. The building 'grows' with the coast's elevation, so each upper floor of the structure expands as a small mountain would narrow. This design solution has maintained the ocean view from as many of the rooms as possible and the widest upper area is completely given over to the spa complex. This area features several relaxation zones, surrounded by an elongated pool. The open veranda, designed for sunbathing is lined with natural stone paving and the narrow grooves in between the stone slabs are filled with shingle. The transparent parapet gives an unrestricted view of the ocean.

The unity of the external and internal space is reflected in the lounge area: one of the walls can be opened out to reveal the infinity pool. Its elongated, rectangular shape creates a long, floating aquatic track. The pool's doublerimmed edge makes the edge of the pool invisible, uniting it with the horizon.

The spa theme is continued in the interior. The ceiling around the central hall features exclusive LED lighted panels, imitating the water's surface. It dominates the walnut minimalisitic interior. Leading up to this however, is a black-marbled corridor that is anything but modest. The bathroom is spacious, and like any other room in the spa building, affords an extensive and beautiful view through a panoramic window that spans the wall. The glass, wood and stone finish creates a warm and comfortable interior and the snow-white bathroom units on black marble emphasises the design's gentility.

The creator of the idea, Jim Olson has made nature part of the structure, using only natural locally-sourced building materials. The infinity pool, 'hidden' behind the building is the cental part of the home spa. The pool's impercepible edge combined with traditional design features such as the double-edge, makes the water's surface 'merge' with the sourroundings.

The designer shower room continues the home spa, recreating a jungle waterfall. The stone floor is interspersed with pebbles from the ocean and the ceiling made out of natural plants and vegetation emphazises the design's natural sources. Interior designer Terry Hunziker completed the internal area in natural sand, beige and brown colour tones and selected natural wood, stone and fabric as materials. The minimalist decor of the spa's interior was inspired by the Baja Peninsula's ancient cultural motifs. Whatever the layout of the house may be, an infinity pool will bring true harmony to the design. CERAMICS FOR THE
21ST CENTURY
Once the design world recognised the importance of the bathroom and started to focus on the design of bathroom interiors, the actual technical completion of the designs, which are often sophisticated and luxurious, became something to consider. A new generation material – cast marble – became the basis for producing these designer products. The Swedish company Marmite uses cast marble to create unique collections of sink units and baths. Cast marble is an environmentally friendly material composed of an homogenous compound mix of marble chips (up to 75%), polyester resin and natural dyes. Its main advantage is that the substance can assume any shape, transforming the most daring designs into tangible products. The marble makes it possible to produce designs up to two metres in length with a minimum thickness of 15 mm. The high-tech manufacturing company Marmite provides high-precision sink units, that can be perfectly adapted for bathroom furniture. The elegant glossy shine, the varied texture, the touch of natural stone and the extensive colour range is the reason why today ceramics and bathroom hardware and furniture look 21st century.

HAND MADE AND MODERN The 'explosion' in Italian design in the 1980s and 90s made the world sit up and take notice of the architect and designer Paola Navone, who has is the creator of both unique collections and unexpected compositions Today, one of the original founders of daring design has turned to the mosaic form. For the company Bisazza, she has designed two collections Affresco and Halo Halo – which are the opposite in both design and style. Geometrical and floral motifs are woven into the mosaic panels of Affresco. The designer explained the concept behind them: 'The floral motif can be seen through the black and white graphics, like a centuries-old picture that has had centuries of dust cleaned away or ancient decorative murals that have been discovered under a layer of plaster'. This contemporary interpretation of a classic flower pattern was completed using computer modelling. The Halo Halo collection consists of various black and white drawings and symbols. The numerous images, when freely combined, allow the space to be designed as necessary and exclusive interiors to be created. The Halo Halo mosaic is handmade – each element of the mosaic is slected according to its position in the picture. The range has been completed in a modern style; graffiti and pop-art have given notable influence.

SET ON MINIMALISM
Seb Ackerstaff is one of the most versatile industrial designers, designing both furniture and flooring; most of his collection, however, is intended for bathroom decor The company Cocoon Design which he set up, is well known for its defined shapes and square corners of the Custom and San Jordi bathroom designs, and also for the Salinas and Atlantis lines, featuring no angles at all. A complete series of integrated mixer taps – the Mono Set – features in Seb Ackerstaff's original new products range. The unit's housing is embedded into the wall and the minimalistic tap is operated through a single touch mechanism. Flo4, the innovative bath filling and drainage system functions without any taps and valves being visible. The water is supplied through the device's round 'head'; rotating this device allows the water flow pressure and temperature to be controlled. Flo4's main casing is wall-mounted and its external parts have a rounded shape and matt covering finish. The system can be easily combined with traditional mixer units and thermostats. All designs from the company Cocoon Design are produced in the high-quality stainless steel, Inox, extending the product's operational life and feature the exclusive Cocoon nano-processing device, promoting the cleansing and scouring of the product.

Wild waves break over the cliffs – such a spectacle capivates everybody. The wild elements inspired the designers Ludovic and Roberto Palomba to design a range of bathroom products called Organic. This new range was created together with the company Laufen, Palomba's business partner of many years. The Organic collection's smooth surfaces and fluid lines retain the sensual aesthetics, depsite the break in symmetry. The designers tried to convey the dynamics of flowing water, as well as its smoothness and flatness. The organic shape of the bath unit is particuarly impressive: the bath
unit's high back supports the body during a relaxing soak. lomba's bathroom collection can also be complemented by a range of radiators that is minimalist in style and shape but extremely bright, rich and varied in colour potential. The collection, designed for the company Tubes, was
awarded the red dot award as the best product design. ПThe range of Fly Fly lamps – the latest product from Palomba and the company Foscarini – enables more light to be brought into the design, while retaining the mysterious atmosphere. These light 'wing' lamps provide not only 360 degree lighting, but also generate a truly original silhouette. The range of designs from Ludovica + Roberto Palomba fluctuates between geometric and organic shapes, combining the benefits of noth these, and others. Their products and designs, be it a bath, sink unit or lamp, simply blend in with the interior, creating a single functional and aesthetic space.

IN SIMPLICITY The concept designer of Swedish company TYLO Group Jan Bjarnhag manages the design of the company's range of saunas and the parts used to produce them. The designer's expertise and creative potential have revealed almost improbable possibilities for the sauna, such as the Life Style sauna, suitable for everyday living. 'Of course, alot of wood is traditionally used in saunas because the sauna is first and foremost, wood. However, current market trends mean that more and more glass and glass-structured sections are being used, so as not to feel restricted in the confines of a small sauna space and so that your surroundings are visible. This is why we created the infinity sauna'. The Simplicity sauna combines the best in design ideas and materials. The panoramic glass inserts used in the product change the traditional view as to how a sauna can and should look like. The laconic cubic shape is complemented by the polished exterior finish and flush mounted, horizontally elongated windows. The door is made of stylish tiger ash. The luxurious benches in tarred aspen create a sauna effect and the original lighting and other features of the design emphasise the natural materials used. 'We've developed design concepts not only for pre-fabricated design solutions, but also with the scope for producing orders to specific dimensions. We propose a selection of possible designs and solutions. The client chooses the rest'.

The most delicate DESIGNS
The Italian Nevio Tellatin's original design vision is concentrated in his work as bathroom collections. Tellatin's studio Artemadesign s.r.l., completes designs for the major brands, however the designer has created his most well-known designs with the bathroom manufacturer Antonio Lupi. A landmark design in the cooperation between Nevio Tellatin and Antonio Lupi was the design of the slimmest bath in the world – the Medea – whose walls are just 12mm thick. The design is made out of artificial acrylic stone – Corian – which is a favourite material of the designer. Continuing his bathroom range, Nevio Tellatin designed the Cerchio sink unit, the simplicity and perfect roundness of which echoes the traditional barrel shape. Cerchio's slender form and shape was made possible by the designer's use of corian. The sink unit's design evolved into the Extro Piega collection. Nevio Tellatin moved away from the classic bowl shape design, replacing it instead with a sloping unit shape, with a hidden slot for drainage. The collection makes it possible to combine sink units, countertops, shapes and the locations of the tap mixer units. This season, the experimental designer Tellatin is presenting his range of shower enclosures on the exclusive 0XCOMBI shower tray base. 8mm thick tempered glass panels are set in a groove. The corian-floored shower tray consists of both regularly-and-irregularly shaped removable slats. The designer's creative impulses became the inspiration behind a series orf original interiors, where natural shapes and smooth lines create a comfortable space. Nevio Tellatin's collections are now the latest word in the design of bathroom hardware and furniture, elevating it to true designer level.

2014 BATHROOM INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS Stanislav Orekhov – designer and owner of the design studio d-e-s-i-g-n.ru, director of the School of Design
2014
has been labelled as the year of smart technology and eco-changes in interior design. First and foremost, the changes are occurring in the conciousness of the 'smart clients', who are increasingly heeding professional advice, rather than taking on repairs and construction work themselves. If interior trends are to be discussed, bright colours and eclectic prints are in currently in fashion, as is maximising the effective use of interior space and 'smart' solutions; this is then combined with a eco-approach in the use of materials. The bathroom is no exception. With regard to the environment, considerable attention is being given to the use of wood in a bathroom
60
design. Don't be afraid to use wood in the bathroom, however, as the latest paints and varnishes mean that contemporary wooden bathroom furniture is now moisture-resistant. Wood's warm texture is perfectly suited to almost any bathroom design solution. Wood can be combined with the cold textures of natural stone, for those lovers of minimalist-style interiors. A bathroom today is not simply a bathroom – it is a complete room, in its own style, with carefully selected furniture and accessories, textiles and lighting. Designers often concentrate more on the design of the bathroom than on the design of the other rooms in the house. Open-plan flats make it possible to extend the bathroom, combining
and merging it into other rooms, like the bedroom, for example, is yet another of this year's trends. The explanation for this is simple – the bathroom has stopped being just a place for getting washed; it has morphed into a full relax-and-unwind-space. It is now seen as the right decision to locate the bathroom in a room with plenty of natural light (on an attic floor in a country house or dacha). A stand-alone bath has a special chic in creating a relaxed atmosphere. Moving to consider the technical side of the issue, it should be noted that in 2014, designers will mostly focus on studying and introducing new bathroom technology and devices into bathroom interior design. If a TV and a hi-fi system have already become commonplace gadgets in the
bathroom, it is now worth getting to grips with such elements as the finer points in the selection of digital and electronic mixer taps, the particulars of anti-scald devices and options now available in shower systems and the wi-fi range of mixer taps. The efficient use of water, maximum durability, lack of noise, safety and the possibility of using wireless technology and devices when integrated into the 'smart home' system, now form the main criteria when choosing modern bathroom hardware and appliances. Creating a stylish and ergonomic
design is worth doing properly. First, draw up a plan of the bathroom based on the technology and devices to be used in the bathroom. Then, depending on budget, select the decorating and finishing materials and then take your time in giving the room a stylish finish and decorative style. Today's wide choice of finishing materials, accessories and bathroom hardware and appliances will make creating a stylish, safe and comfortable space possible, for a design with any budget. Good luck in designing and creating your bathroom!
The master class by Stanislav Orekhov will take place on 3 April 2014 at 11.00 in the conference hall, pavilion 8, Expocentre 61

HOUSES MADE WITH

The company 'ASB Karlson & Đš' has been designing and building residential and public buildings since 1991. Since this time, over 200 unique designs have been completed, which include private country residences, villas and houses. 62
T
he company has gained a strong market position and a flawless professional reputation in the architectural community, thanks to its leader, the director of this architects practice, the architect Oleg Karlson. 'A house should be like a…suit! It should be comfortable and convenient, but it should also make a good impression on others. Therefore, when in the process of designing a house, I try to understand the client as much as possible: their habits, preferences and desires. Everyone has different habits and there aren't really any universal recipes for comfort - I would name the correct use of lighting and the proportional use of space'. Within any style you can create convenience, good lighting and an accurate design composition. Moreover, every style has its own special way of solving these issues. A house in any style can be beautiful or ugly. The only houses that are beautiful are those made with love by good architects. I would like to live in a different era! However, it is
namely our time where there is opportunity: there isn't currently any dominant asethetic, at the moment anything is possible! It's very interesting working with clients who each have different requirements. People hire an architect to bring their ideas competently and correctly into tangible reality and not just so that the architect can simply fulfill their ambitions using the client's money. Our profession is similar to directing: we organise and arrange everything so that we can see the complete picture. And when the client says 'I came up with the idea for this house', then your mission has been accomplished'.

THE CONNECTING LINK The global manufacturer of mortars Laticrete (USA) specialises in the manufacture of adhesives, cement and sand fillers, and membranes for levelling surfaces. Martha H. Cerlon, Director of International Sales, told CERSANEX Magazine about the development of Laticrete’s product range. What new products and innovations are you presenting this year? LATICRETE STRATA_MAT, an uncoupling mat that is installed directly over a cementitous or wooden substrate, or a substrate that has problems. This system is installed with modified or unmodified adhesive. The advantage of this system is that there are cavities, and these allow the mortar, the adhesive, to cure very quickly. Over this you can install whatever tile or stone. The important thing is to select the adhesive that is needed. We are also presenting Paver Link, which is a grout that is ready to use. It doesn’t require any mixing, you just throw it on the floor and then, with a brush, you apply it over all the joints. It cures with the air. You have one hour to work with it and in twelve hours it becomes
64
very hard. This is to be used with pavers outside. We have another very interesting system, Hydro Ban, which is a waterproofing membrane. It is a liquid applied with a roller and you can use it, for example, in a bathroom or shower. There is also 254, a polymer fortified adhesive. This is an adhesive you can use for the installation of big pieces of porcelain tile, even on an exterior façade, without the need of mechanical anchoring. We also have an epoxy grout, SPECTRALOCK PRO Premium Grout, which is stain proof and contains Mircroban, a product that is antibacterial and doesn’t produce any mould. It is ideal for bathrooms, swimming pools and kitchens. We are also presenting an industrial floor system for food pro-
cessing factories. It comprises a self-levelling material, an epoxy adhesive and a 100% epoxy grout, which is resistant to all the chemicals you will find in a food processing plant. Another adhesive, 125, has three functions: adhesive, antifracture membrane and crack suppression. It also helps to reduce the transmission of sound from one floor to another. You can even install it directly over existing tiles. Laticrete Supercap is a system especially for big projects. For example, if you have high rises, to transport the materials from the ground floor to the fiftieth floor, a truck pumps all the material to the floor. The installation is very fast. This is the latest innovation. The truck is a portable plant that can be moved directly to the project
CLOSER TO NATURE What are the current trends in bathroom design and ceramics? The bathroom has now become as important as any other room in a home. In the bathroom you can relax, rest, read a book – just like in the other rooms. How has bathroom design changed over recent years in terms of the materials or colours used? Now the choice of colours is more natural and clear than 10 years ago. We prefer white and more natural colours, rather than the strong colours used in the past. And natural materials like ceramics and stone are used in bathroom collections. We focus on nature and the connection with nature and the environment, and this is expressed in architecture and interiors. The style is more essential and simple.
The designers of I-DEA studio have traced the evolution of bathroom design since the 90s. In the Italian city of Bologna, they presented a retrospective of sanitary ware, finishing materials and accessories. One of the creators of the exhibition, the designer Lorenza Golinelli, told MosBuild Magazine about modern trends in bathroom interiors. Are consumers beginning to spend more on bathrooms? Yes, young people are giving more importance to the bathroom so are spending more on bathroom interiors and architecture. This season seems to be about sea colours – blues and greens. Is this a current trend? Yes, we were at the Salone del Mobilie in Milan in May and also there we saw a lot of blue and sea colours.

French colour Innovative materials, technologies and bold French design form the basis of Ambiance Bain’s new collections. Managing director Stefan Ghirardello discusses the company’s production methods and variety of colour solutions.
What are your new products and innovations this season? We are known for synthetic resin. We have three factories making synthetic resin, which is a marble powder mixed with resin, with a gel coat on top. It is not only very easy to install, but also very easy to maintain, waterproof, anti-bacterial and all in one, so really easy to clean. It is available in about 23 different colours and from January we will also have the possibility to have it in all the RAL colours as well. We manufacture worktops, shower trays, which are made to measure, and wall cladding. So this is a very innovative and different way of combining furniture, shower and shower area. In terms of the ranges we have, we have a really large selection. We don’t do classic - it’s all contemporary. We have a very large selection of units of different sizes and colours. We
66
are known for the colours as well. This is also a big difference from most of the Italian companies here, where it is mainly wood, white and grey. We are known for more colourful things. We also have space saving solutions. The Russians who have come to our stand – we have an agent in Russia and sell quite a lot in Russia – they really like our space saving solutions. Tempo is a more minimalist solution, with a big thick worktop that we have in diferrent sizes – you can mix and match with the colours. The sit-on basin can be synthetic resin, ceramic or other types. Eden is another collection, a lacquered unit and top of the range. It is lacquered in metallic finish and available in plain finish. It has an electric drawer with LED lighting inside, a mirror at the bottom, glass on the side of the runners and real solid wood compartments. It is man-
ufactured with a 45-degree angle on the carcass and the drawer, so it is really clean when it is closed. This is good for the Russian market. The Kitoi collection is quite different for us because it is solid surface. We deliver it as a whole unit, it is always white, with a thermo-shaped basin and you choose the colour for the front. In terms of quality, we are the only French manufacturer equipped with a laser edging machine, which means that the edges are not glued but laser activated and bonded, so you cannot see the line with the glue and it is much more resistant to water and moisture. The quality is much higher. This collection also goes really well in Russia. Do you make any products specifically for the Russian market? We have an identity, in terms of the brand, which we need to keep, but we do bear in mind other mar-
kets and needs when we develop products. How important is the Russian market for your company? It is hugely important. Twenty percent of our turnover is exports. A huge share of that is the UK, because we have been there for 18 years. The Russian market we started a couple of years ago and we now have a number of distributors in Russia. There is huge delay for us when we start on a market: we need to find the right people, show in the right places and then generate sales, so it takes time. We have planted the seeds, put lots of water on and fed them, and now they’re starting to grow. So the Russian market should be quite interesting. In fact, we have had our Russian agent on the stand for the four days of the exhibition and she has been busy non-stop.

Manufacturers are now offering incredibly diverse collections of ceramics, bathroom hardware and fittings, furniture and accessories. The main thing, however, is to have an accurate idea of what this important space should be like for you personally. Cersanex Magazine presents the ТОР-10 bathroom designs to inspire you.

COMFORT AND PRACTICALITY What do you want from your bathroom fittings and fixtures? First and foremost, they should be practical and made using contemporary materials. An ideal material would be one that is corrosionand mould-resistant, can withstand high humidity and does not show the effects of wear and tear. We use the bathroom every day: taking a shower or lounging in a relaxing bath. Therefore the priorities remain comfort and practicality.
